Prior to performing a swerving version of Lucinda Williams’ “Drunken Angel” for an intimate dinner party in Nashville on Monday night, Jason Isbell remarked how some songwriters just can’t write a good song anymore. But Williams, he said, was so unfailingly talented that she could restart her career right now and in 10 years “we’d be right back here.” Here was the BMI Troubadour Award celebration, which honored Williams — the first woman to receive the award — for decades of songwriting greatness.

The Forest Rangers previously offered up a fiery take on Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" – but with their latest Dylan cover tune, 1964's "Boots of Spanish Leather," the Sons of Anarchy house band employs a hazier, more restrained approach. The recording (featured during Tuesday's night's episode, "Faith and Despondency") is led by a stirring vocal from singer-songwriter Amos Lee, who draws out a sense of emotional turmoil from the lovesick lyrics.

The Bonnaroo Music Festival, which runs for four days in Manchester Tenn., recently announced their 2014 lineup.
Headlining the 13th annual Bonnaroo will be Elton John, Kanye West, Jack White, Lionel Richie, Vampire Weekend, The Avett Brothers, Phoenix, Skrillex, Arctic Monkeys, Frank Ocean and The Flaming Lips.
Also heading to the Great Stage Park this summer will be Neutral Milk Hotel, Wiz Khalifa, Cut Copy, The Head and the Heart, Lauryn Hill, Broken Bells, Ice Cube, Slightly Stoopid, Fitz and The Tantrums, Cake, Janelle Monae, Amos Lee and John Butler Trio.
West was a surprise choice for the festival, which hasn’t had the rapper in their lineup since 2008 when he walked onto the stage nearly two hours after his scheduled set time. Though he tried to blame Pearl Jam’s extended set, the crowd united in booing him.

The always epic Bonnaroo — a four-day music and camping festival on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tenn. — boasts some huge names this year. 1. Miley Cyrus-'Bangerz' (RCA Records)
Tabloid regular and queen of "twerk" Miley Cyrus is gearing up to release her highly anticipated fourth studio album, Bangerz. In the weeks leading up to its release, Cyrus received much criticism for her antics, let alone for her stripped-down video, Wrecking Ball. The music video currently holds a Vevo record, being the fastest music video ever to reach certified status, with over 100 million views in just 6 days. In an effort to shed her former squeaky clean Disney-tween image, Cyrus has gone to the extreme to bare everything, literally.

Johnny Cash: Blood, Sweat and Tears (Columbia)
Some of Cash's '60s concept albums were burdened with much too talking between tracks; here the tribute to the American working man gets to mostly stand alone on its musical merits, and shines. Notably, it incluces the top version of the traditional "John Henry"” about the most legendarily heroic working man ever, and the version of "Casey Jones" here is classic as well. Politically and psychologically, Cash was the perfect man for this job.
1968
Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers (Columbia)
Sometimes transitional albums, confusing listeners expecting a group's earlier style, are underrated. Not so with this classic. It's true that it didn't sell as well as earlier Byrds LPs, nor did the single from the album chart very high, but for decades Notorious Byrd Brothers has been widely revered, and not just by fans; some critics have even anointed it as the band's best album.

So about American Idol, my favorite hyper-manipulated talent cotillion: It's the best. Every season I find a singer worth defending (season 10's Didi Benami!), another to dread (season 8's Danny Gokey!), and a huge machine of obvious bias. I'm always outraged and panicked and hooked, and this year is no exception. I'll be recapping the eleventh season from here on in, and I'm dying to get to Top 24 week when the real blood flies, the feeble acoustic princesses shatter on live TV, and Ryan Seacrest responds to it all with a moon-colored TV grin that only the flawless alien mothership that created Seacrest could love.
In this first episode of Hollywood Week, 300+ auditioners lined up for a quick cleanse. Judges Steven Tyler (or the waterlogged mugshot of Mickey Rourke that calls itself Steven Tyler), Jennifer Lopez, and Randy Jackson preside, and their opinion barely matters to me. The contestants sing...

At last, after wandering for weeks in the desolate wasteland known as "American Idol's" audition rounds, we have emerged into the deafening, hyperbole-ridden circus known as "Hollywood Week." This is not actually an improvement, because it seems as though we're actually hearing less singing now than we did in previous installments, which makes it somewhat difficult to judge the singers. Since we're lucky to hear 20 seconds of actual vocal demonstration from any of the hopefuls, my previous method of choosing the episode's five most memorable moments has been rendered obsolete. Thus, I'll be doing a straight rundown of the episode's highlights during this section of the competition.
In this week's episodes, we'll see 309 golden ticket holders summarily whittled down to a more manageable number, before the contestants are shoehorned into groups for next week's mass slaughter further elimination process. There will be tears, there will be tantrums, and there...

It's Hollywood Week on American Idol! On Wednesday's episode, more than 300 singers arrived in Los Angeles, hoping to keep their dream alive. Each contestant performed an a cappella song of their choice in front of judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson, who offered very little feedback other than telling them whether or not they're still in the competition. Many of the standouts from auditions are still in the game but others, including Jim Carrey's daughter Jane, were sent home. Carrey performed "Lookin' Out My Backdoor" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. "I freaked out when I was there so I was really,...

When it comes to "American Idol," everyone wants to go to Hollywood. But the euphoria from that Golden Ticket doesn't last long for contestants, as the slash-and-burn process of the notoriously cutthroat Hollywood Week takes hold.
This year, 309 contestants made it through to Hollywood, and the whittling-down process started immediately. Wednesday's (February 8) "Idol" focused on the beginning of Hollywood Week, when 68 contestants were shown the door by the end of day one.
Among those going home was Jane Carrey, daughter of actor Jim Carrey, who failed to make much of an impression with her timid take on Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lookin' Out My Back Door." Because of her family ties, Carrey was one of the most noteworthy contestants from the audition episodes,...

The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor was released yesterday as a hardcover and ebook, but it is also available as an audiobook narrated by Fred Berman. Today, we’ve been given two audio clip previews, including an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead readers.
“In the Walking Dead universe, there is no greater villain than The Governor. The despot who runs the walled-off town of Woodbury, he has his own sick sense of justice, whether it’s forcing prisoners to battle zombies in an arena for the townspeople’s amusement or chopping off the appendages of those who cross him. The Governor was voted “Villain of the Year” by Wizard magazine the year he debuted, and his story arc was the most controversial in the history of the Walking Dead comic book series.

"The Walking Dead" returns to television this week, but you don't have to wait until Sunday for new adventures set in the post-zombie apocalypse.
Robert Kirkman and co-author Jay Bonansinga are the men behind "The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor," a brand new prose novel hitting stores tomorrow (October 11). As the title implies, the new book shines the spotlight on one of the franchise's most notorious villains — Philip Blake, better known as the vicious Governor of Woodbury, a man who makes even the rotting undead look civilized. But was Philip always such a ruthless, soulless shell of a man? What drove him to commit such atrocities?
"Rise of the Governor" pulls the curtain back on Philip's early days as a survivor of the zombie apocalypse, and before the book hits stores, you can get a first look — or listen, rather — right here on MTV Splash Page. Click on...

I've spent most of my day in the presence of 10-13 year olds, outside, so my wit is a bit strained at this point since I can't ask the children "Are you shitting me with this? Seriously?" after I've told them to stop hitting each other nine times in a row and see one of them leaning over to hit another one. I remember once telling my younger sister that should couldn't just move into my apartment with me and start college early because 1. she hadn't finished high school yet and 2. high school is where we keep teenagers until they turn back into humans. I should probably extend that to say that middle school is where we keep changelings until they better figure out how to act like teenagers. Here's your Thursday night TV:

Just like movie studios roll out the big guns around the holidays in time to take a shot at Oscar gold, music stars know that summer is the best time to separate fans from their hard-earned babysitting and lifeguarding money. J. Cole was one of the artists who was billed to perform on the first day of 2011 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. The Roc Nation rapper paid homage to his two idols Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. during his set on Thursday, June 9.
"They've got all these incredible rock bands out here that we respect and we love," Cole said. "They get to cover they favorite artist's songs; why the f*** can't we do that?" He then covered the late rapper's 1996 single "I Ain't Mad at Cha", and shouted to the crowd, "Ya'll make some noise for motherf***ing Tupac Shakur."
Cole's tribute to Notorious B.I.G. came when he played "Higher", a track lifted from his "Friday Night Lights" mixtape. The song features The Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets" which was sampled by Biggie on his classic 1994 hit "Big Poppa".

It was kind of hard to fathom it, when Amos Lee came out with a No. 1-selling album "Mission Bell" on The Billboard 200 earlier this year. Granted, sales required for a No. 1 aren't what they used to be, and it marked a record low, but then again, how many No. 1 albums do you have, chump? Anyway, it's easy to see why people like the New York singer-songwriter, particularly with the light feather new "Flower," the video to which dropped this week. I was a big fan of initial single "Windows Are Rolled Down." There's something so harmless about his...

Apparently "Stargate: Universe" has their series finale tonight and I know not a damn thing about that show so I can't give it a proper send off at all. According to various sources (coughWikipediacough) the finale will be a cliff hanger that was supposed to be resolved by a movie, but apparently that movie is not happening so the series will just end on a cliff hanger that has no resolution forth coming. I bet those of you who invested your time and attention in this series are absolutely thrilled to hear that. As someone who has loved exactly one show that aired on SyFy and saw the way they treated it, all I can say is that you had to expect it. Here's your Monday night TV:

For many, the Dave Matthews Band is summer. So, after a 20-year kinship with the band on the road, what exactly would a Dmb-less summer look like for devoted fans? Lucky for "Dave heads," they'll no longer have to ponder that prospect.
In 2010 the band announced they would be taking a hiatus from touring in 2011, but in the months that followed, an announcement was made that the multifaceted group — which includes Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard and Boyd Tinsley, as well as Rashawn Ross, Tim Reynolds and Jeff Coffin (who stepped in after the death of founding member LeRoi Moore) — would be headlining a four-stop, multi-act Caravan festival from June to September.

Since I'm graduating from graduate school soon (that always looks weird to me), we're fast approaching the day I will need to find a real job and I'm thinking I won't like that since right now at the top of my list of "things I want in a real job" is "nap time" and I don't know of any workplaces that allow that. Even when you're a preschool teacher I think you're supposed to stay awake while the little ankle-biters sleep so you can make sure none of them punch each other or steal your wallet or whatever trouble small children are getting up to these days. At that age most of what I did when I was left unsupervised involved ferreting out inappropriate reading materials and climbing things. Good times. Any suggestions other than winning the lottery? Or becoming a trophy wife? Thanks. Here's your Wednesday night TV:

On Tuesday (February 15), organizers announced the lineup for the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, set for June 9-12 in Manchester, Tennessee. And, boy, it's going to be interesting to hear the purists' take on this year's bill.
Browse photos of the 2011 Bonnaroo performers.
Unlike earlier, decidedly crunchy editions of the fest, the 2011 lineup is topped by two of the hugest hip-hop acts in the business — Eminem and Lil Wayne — along with newly crowned Grammy champs Arcade Fire and the Black Keys. Other acts on the bill include Mumford & Sons, the Strokes, the Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa and Robyn.
Of course, there are still some nods to Bonnaroo's roots: Fest vets Widespread Panic return once again, as do My Morning Jacket and the String Cheese Incident.
