Star Trek actors Jonathan Frakes, Armin Shimerman, Kitty Swink, and John Billingsley, along with Juan Carlos Coto, brother of Manny Coto, the late Star Trek: Enterprise writer, showrunner, and executive producer, will once again join forces in support of PurpleStride Los Angeles. The annual walk, to be held on April 26, is part of a larger national effort called PanCAN PurpleStride, which aims to end pancreatic cancer and raise awareness of the disease. PanCAN stands for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Pancreatic cancer has hit home for several of the Star Trek figures mentioned above. Swink is something of a miracle story, as she is a 21-year survivor of the frequently deadly disease. She guest starred in two Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes, playing Rozahn in “Sanctuary” and Luaran in “Tacking Into the Wind.” Fans also know her as a frequent convention attendee, with her table always next to that of DS9’s Quark,...

The fate of The Orville remains undecided. After three seasons, it could all be over in a blink of an eye. Still, if all we got were three seasons, then what a wonderful three seasons it was. The series won over fans by embracing the core concepts of Star Trek. Granted, it was with a humorous twist most times, but the idea of pushing for a brighter future while also pushing important cultural conversations was straight out of the Star Trek playbook.
The fact that The Orville so lovingly modeled itself after the prime years of Star Trek (1987-2005), and the shows that came with it isn't some random act. Many of the men and women who worked on those iconic shows 20 to 30-odd years ago were brought in by Seth MacFarlane to help launch and mold The Orville into a spiritual successor to all of those wonderful Star Trek shows of the 80s,...

Whilst I don’t typically cover faith-based films, I was intrigued by The Shift‘s ambitious premise. A Christian science fiction thriller from writer/director Brock Heasley, A film that combines the high-concept appeal of multiverse storytelling with faith-based themes is certainly a bold endeavour, and Heasley deserves credit for taking such a creative risk.
The story follows Kevin Garner, played by Kristoffer Polaha, a man thrust into a dystopian web of parallel universes while trying to reunite with his wife, Molly, portrayed by Elizabeth Tabish. Neal McDonough delivers a menacing performance as “The Benefactor,” a mysterious and sinister figure who seems to control Kevin’s fate. Any business can be anxiety-inducing, especially the ones that have a whole lot of people ready to rip you apart to make their place. Director Austin Peters’ “Skincare” stars Elizabeth Banks as Hope Goldman, a middle-aged woman trying to make a name for herself in the world of Hollywoodland’s ever-growing line of Beauty Products. However, right before the launch of her own line, a competitor arrives just next door, and out of nowhere, someone starts to jeopardize the name she has built for herself after years of straight-faced networking and star-gazed buttering up.
The tone that Peters uses for the movie is a mix of camp and corporate politics and the way fame and name work in a place like Hollywood. It works for a large part of the film, although it could have gone a little darker and more profound.

2025 is off to a slow start for cinema fans subscribed to AMC+, with the streaming platform only adding two new movies in January, though coming down from the holidays, you may be too distracted with new gadgets to notice. Still, the minor offering should not entirely put viewers off, as they get two choice films in the Elizabeth Banks-led thriller Skincare and a current frontrunner for the 2025 Oscars for Best Animated Feature in Memoir of a Snail. Looking into AMC's extended network, Shudder brings some great New Year chills in Get Away, Grafted, and Dark Match.
Those wanting more content should note that AMC+ will be running a spotlight to coincide with the release of the second season of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches Season 2 called "Wicked: Stories of Magic and Mystery" This spotlight will highlight all the witch-themed titles on AMC+ and Shudder. In the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Chosen Realm", the Enterprise rescues a group of Triannons whose ship was damaged by a spatial anomaly. The captain of the Triannons, a man named Pri'Nam D'Jamat (Conor O'Farrell), explains that he leads a religious sect self-tasked with the exploration of multiple mysterious mechanical spheres that are scattered throughout this part of the galaxy. The spheres, he says, were created by the gods, and will guide his people toward the correct religious doctrine. He believes that the space around the spheres is holy land.
Rather suddenly, one of D'Jamat's retinue explodes in a suicide bombing. D'Jamat demands that Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) turn over control of the Enterprise to his sect, as he wants to use the ship's advanced weapons to aid a holy war raging back on his home planet. Star Trek: The Original Series had three core characters that most of the episodes were based around—Captain James T. Kirk [William Shatner], Mr. Spock [Leonard Nimoy], and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy [DeForest Kelley]. The remaining cast were supporting characters that were offered little in the way of character arcs.
To one Star Trek: Enterprise actor, Anthony Montogmery, who portrayed Travis Mayweather for four seasons, Enterprise became just like The Original Series. In an interview Montgomery gave Trekmovie, when asked if they [his fellow actors Connor Trinneer, John Billingsley, and Dominic Keating] had any knowledge about the potential plans for their charactes had the series been renewed for a fifth season, he said he would have liked to have learned more about his character. If there is anyone who liked the series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise, they haven't been very vocal about it. For the most part, fans abhorred the last episode...even the actors, with some seeing it as a slap in the face. But while the story was lacking, Linda Park, who played Ensign Hoshi on the series, didn't mind the filming of the series finale as it brought back some friends. Due to her connection to some of the Star Trek; The Next Generation actors, whether through working with them or being friends with them, Park felt like the finale was "like friends coming to hang out some more."
The actors weren't blamed for the finale. That lay solely at the feet of Brannon Braga and Rick Berman, and it was a tough pill to swallow for all of us who felt the cast of Enterprise took a back seat...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has the opportunity to solve a Star Trek: Enterprise mystery that has lasted for over 19 years. In Enterprise's controversial finale, "These are the Voyages...", Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) visits the Nx-01 Enterprise in the holodeck, posing as the ship's Chef. Riker's version of Chef is friends with all the major characters on Enterprise: cooking and making pasta with Subcommander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock), Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park), and even Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley). Yet Enterprise never revealed Chef's identity.

Dr. Phlox, as played by John Billingsley on "Star Trek: Enterprise," may be one of the best characters in the franchise. Phlox was on board the Enterprise as part of a species exchange program, and he was eager to serve among humans, tickled by their optimism and amused by their prudishness. He was a Denobulan, a species with its own set of medical ethics (the will of the patient supersedes an Earth doctor's pledge to first do no harm), leading to some principled discussions of right and wrong. His species also married into vast, complex polycules where each man takes three wives and each woman takes three husbands. When asked if that made things complicated on his homeworld, Phlox smiled impishly and replied, "Yes."
Phlox was always upbeat, however, and was eager to explain cultural differences to curious human seekers. Phlox also practiced weird, but scientifically proven, medical techniques, often...

Best known for playing Lt. Commander Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, actor Michael Dorn also directed four episodes of Star Trek. Dorn is one of many Star Trek: DS9 actors who became directors. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Avery Brooks (Captain Benjamin Sisko) and Rene Auberjonois (Constable Odo) each directed nine episodes of DS9. Tng's LeVar Burton (Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge), and Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Duncan McNeill (Lt. Tom Paris) and Roxann Dawson (Lt. B'Elanna Torres) have all become successful television directors.
Many Star Trek actors, including Dorn, got their chance to direct episodes because Star Trek producer Rick Berman's "Director's School" let interested actors from 1990s Star Trek shows get hands-on experience as directors. The Star Trek Director's School was inspired by Dorn's Star Trek: The Next Generation cast mate Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Riker), who...

An LA salon-owner gets involved in an escalating feud with a rival facialist in this blackly comic thriller with a pleasing female focus
Following hot on the stiletto heels of female-led body-horror hit The Substance, comedy thriller Skincare also centres on a female protagonist – in this case facialist Hope Goldman (Elizabeth Banks) – who is dedicated to the pursuit of youthful appearance. This effort is far more grounded in realism than The Substance (it even sports a “based on a true story” tag at the beginning), but there is a similar blackly comic vibe at play, which makes it both fun and full of cringe moments that echo the Demi Moore-Margaret Qualley gorefest. From the beginning, one of the most integral elements of Star Trek has been the interplay between real-world social issues and science-fiction storytelling. Not only does this affect the themes of the stories that Star Trek tells, but it also creates a special relationship by integrating its characters directly with "real world" events.
Whether taking place in the modern day, recent past, or near future, many entries in this franchise have taken place in a world that is not yet the utopia that Gene Roddenberry envisioned. By crossing over into the real world, Star Trek gets to tell more grounded and human stories or find comedy in creating fish-out-of-water scenarios for beloved characters.

The new trailer for the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, is keeping with the animated comedys tradition of referencing former Star Trek shows. It does it once again by featuring the notorious forever-ensign Harry Kim, from the 1990s series, Star Trek: Voyager. Garrett Wang, who played Kim on Voyager poised the trailer on his X account.
The final scene of the trailer shows a group of Harry Kims, all but one still wearing the one-pip Starfleet rank of ensign. Kim, throughout the entire seven-season run of Voyager, was, while the ship was stuck in the Delta Quadrant, never promoted above the rank of ensign.

Star Trek has had numerous alien races onboard its series and in its movies, and some of the actors portraying these characters require more time in the make-up chair than others. Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation acknowledged at a ComicBook fundraiser that he was fortunate to play a human on the show as it saved him a lot of time. [via Looper}
When the day of filming was over, Frakes and Patrick Stewart [Captain Picard] could head out for a drink while both Michael Dorn [Worf] and Brent Spiner [Data] were stuck in the makeup chairs getting prosthetics removed and gold paint washed off. Then there were the women who had to get their wigs off. Frakes pointed out that people playing aliens had to arrive on set at least four hours earlier and stay at least an hour and a half later after everyone else was done with their time on set.

Star Trek: Enterprise's finale, "These are the Voyages...," is probably the least-liked of all Star Trek intentional finales. I say intentional because Star Trek: The Original Series ended with "Turnabout Intruder," which wasn't set up to be a series finale. Since Enterprise ended in 2005, the finale has been villified, and most Star Trek fans refuse to watch it. That makes sense. If you dislike the episode, you dislike the episode. And most people wonder what the producers were thinking to have the series go out on a note like that.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, John Billingsley, who played Dr. Phlox on Enterprise, looked at the finale from a different point of view. While it was supposed to wrap up the series, many of the crew that had been working on Enterprise had also been working on Star Trek since The Next Generation. So they had a seventeen-year history...

Lewis Pullman is following up his Emmy-nominated turn in Lessons in Chemistry with two very cool genre movies the edgy "sunshine noir" of Skincare, and the highly-anticipated film adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot. In the former, he stars opposite Elizabeth Banks as Jordan, an aspiring influencer who may be in over his head as he tries to achieve his own brand of stardom in modern Los Angeles. In Salem's Lot, he leads the film as writer Ben Mears, who returns to his hometown and discovers that it's been infiltrated by a vampire. There's been some controversy surrounding the project, as the studio decided to pull its theatrical release and bring it straight to Max, even though King took to social media to sing its praises.
And Pullman confirmed to us that it's indeed a successful end result. "I'm excited about it. I saw it, and it's a blast,...

Releasing a music video with Orville Peck, Beck, and Sharon Stone one month, and a glossy and glamorous film with Elizabeth Banks and Lewis Pullman another month, filmmaker Austin Peters is doing it all, and with style. We spoke with him recently about his new movie Skincare, which is now playing in theaters and stars that wildly talented aforementioned cast.
The satirical thriller's storyline involves a beauty salon owner's rivalry with another nearby business, which escalates to the point of violent threats. If the plot sounds over-the-top, just remember, so if life some of the events actually happened in Hollywood circa 2014. Well, kind of. "It's really just loosely inspired by some of those events," Peters told MovieWeb. "Early on, we sort of wanted to just make it its own thing and its own movie. And so once there was that sort of point of departure, you know, we basically never returned to it again.

Lewis Pullman stars in the new mystery thriller Skincare as an eccentric influencer-type named Jordan. Pullman drew inspiration from Justin Timberlake for his role but went a bit overboard and had to find a balance in portraying the character. Skincare is a satire about a rivalry between renowned aestheticians, also with Elizabeth Banks.
Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick) stars in the darkly funny new mystery thriller Skincare, which is now playing in theaters. He plays an eccentric and ambitious influencer-type named Jordan who wants to help his renowned beautician pal, Hope (played by Elizabeth Banks), when a competing salon opens across the street from her business. It's a rich role and could be Pullman's finest performance to date and he drew from a boy band pop singer for it. Back when Pullman's real-life actor dad, Bill Pullman, was starring in high-profile films like Independence Day, there was a surge of boy bands emerging,...

Elizabeth Banks delivers a stellar performance in Skincare, delving into themes of success and self-sabotage in Hollywood. The film offers a unique take on the beauty and film industries, blending humor and darkness effectively. Despite being slightly shallow, Skincare is a solid noir thriller with funny moments and a compelling narrative.
Elizabeth Banks' new satirical thriller, Skincare, sees the actress brilliantly combine her comedic and dramatic chops in a biting take on success in a purportedly shallow industry. Her character, Hope Goldman, is a Hollywood aesthetician who seemingly has everything until a plot surfaces to take her down. Skincare is the director Austin Peters' first narrative feature, but he handles the story and film with the practiced hands of someone who knows their way around Hollywood. It's interesting to see how he juxtaposes the color and glamour of Los Angeles with the darkness at the center of his tale.

Women writers have always been integral to Star Trek, paving the way for diversity and inclusion on screen and behind the scenes. D.C. Fontana, Phyllis Strong, and other talented women have penned some of Star Trek's most iconic episodes, shaping the series for generations to come. Episodes like "Damage," "Red Directive," and "The Measure of a Man" showcase the depth and impact of women's contributions to the Star Trek universe.
Throughout Star Trek's long and varied history, several incredible episodes have been written by women. Since Star Trek: The Original Series premiered in 1966, the franchise has championed diversity on screen. While this philosophy did not always extend to the people working behind the scenes, Star Trek: Tos did have several women writers, including D.C. Fontana as a story editor. We spoke to Elizabeth Banks about her new movie Skincare, where she plays an ambitious but anxiety-stricken beauty salon owner in Hollywood. It's a deliciously dark study on the far reaches that business owners will go for the sake of success, especially in the crowded beauty industry in sunny, plastic Los Angeles. Between Skincare and Demi Moore's new buzzy film The Substance, our perpetual striving for beautification is clearly a hot topic in Hollywood these days.
"There's a lot to be said about aging and beauty and all of that right now, especially online, especially as it applies to social media and what it's doing to our psyche about aging, as everything can be filtered and everybody can be Botoxed, and everything can be filled," Banks told MoiveWeb. It’s rare when a ripped-from-the-headlines adaptation fails to capitalize upon the wilder, weirder aspects of its real-life counterpart. Yet that’s what happens in the case of director Austin Peters’ “Skincare,” which, to be fair, only claims to be a fictionalized version of the true-crime story of a successful celebrity aesthetician who allegedly hired a hitman to take out her competition. What’s there borrows from the real scandal to lightly explore the feminine rage, jealousy and paranoia festering underneath a girl-boss gloss so prevalent in the early 2010s. Through slick aesthetics bolstered by a sensational soundscape, the filmmakers build an entrancing, atmospheric mood piece. But given a few of its omissions, it’s questionable why the storytellers didn’t go in for the kill.

Skincare is a cleverly directed thriller that satirizes the cutthroat world of beauty and Hollywood glamor. Elizabeth Banks' award-worthy performance leads a wonderful cast who all get developed and explored in interesting ways, though we needed more Lewis Pullman. Skincare is a sharp satire that blends mystery, crime, and thriller elements to great effect, at least until a disappointing ending.

Quick Links What Is Skincare About? Who Is Dawn DaLuise? How Skincare Adapts DaLuise's Story
Bowing theatrically on August 16, 2024, the adage "life imitates art" applies to the new Elizabeth Banks movie Skincare. Only the filmmakers claim they weren't aware of its real-life inspiration while producing the thriller. In one of the most bizarre stories in recent Hollywood memory, a professional facialist named Dawn DaLuise accused Skincare of stealing her life story and adapting her tale without her consent.
Although Banks and director Austin Peters maintain the parallels to DaLuise's story are purely accidental, the similarities are too stark to ignore. As such, it's worth delving into the specifics of DaLuise's true story and how much Skincare appropriates her life without permission. An ultimate tale of rivalry and revenge, whether unwittingly adapting DaLuise's story, Skincare explores the importance of keeping up appearances in a glitzy town like Hollywood.

Dominic Keating was not happy with the twist in Star Trek: Discovery's finale, calling it "a slap in the face." Keating expressed resentment towards Enterprise's Temporal War storyline and the underuse of his character. "The House of Quark" intertwines Ferengi comedy with Klingon lore, making Quark the head of a Klingon household as a puppet. "The House of Quark" is the only DS9 episode to feature Chancellor Gowron without Worf, and also the last episode to visit Qo'noS in seven years. Reasons why DS9 avoided showing Qo'noS include Worf's issues with Klingons during the Second Klingon War.

On "Star Trek: Enterprise," the character of Ensign Hoshi Sato, played by actress Linda Park, served as the communications officer on board the titular ship. "Enterprise" takes place a century before the events of the original "Star Trek" series, so the franchise's notorious universal translator hadn't yet been refined, leaving human translators like Hoshi to fill in the gaps. Hoshi had a talent for xenolinguistics, but didn't quite have the constitution for long-range space missions or combat situations. She was young and inexperienced, and had to constantly face her anxieties head-on. As the show progressed, Hoshi came into her own, displaying more and more confidence.
The problem with characters that can be defined as "young and inexperienced" is that eventually they will have to become adult and experienced. They will then require other character traits to define them ... and TV writers don't always think that far ahead. Many of the...

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, the final season, is currently underway. The series debuted in 2017 and was used as the launch title for the streaming service CBS All Access, now rebranded Paramount+. It was also the first Star Trek series on television in 12 years following the conclusion of Star Trek: Enterprise back in 2005. While Paramount has spent nearly a decade trying to get Star Trek 4 out of development hell, the franchise has been going strong on Paramount+ with various series on the streaming service at different times of the year. Now, there is almost always a Star Trek series on the air at any given point.
Star Trek: Discovery is a fascinating case for the franchise, as it was originally conceived as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, but following the conclusion of Season 2 and starting in Season 3, the series jumped far into the future, the farthest point in the franchise history.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently in production on its third season, which will premiere on Paramount+ in 2025. “On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds,’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said executive producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers and executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.” Strange New Worlds has been a big success for Paramount+, quickly becoming a fan...

This article contains spoilers for The Orville, Star Trek: The Original Series, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Featuring broad comedy and characters who don’t seem to be taking their jobs very seriously, the first trailer for The Orville suggested that the Fox series would be a spoof of Star Trek.
In said trailer, Captain Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) tries to eat a marble and asks an alien to move over so he is framed better in the viewscreen. Lt. Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes) drinks beer while on duty, flying a shuttle, at 9:15 a.m. Commander Kelly Grayson’s (Adrianne Palicki) former marriage to Mercer is treated to rather stale “comic” arguments about going to therapy. Mercer’s reaction to Lt. Commander Bortus’s (Peter Macon) species being entirely male is to observe, with truly cutting and original wit, that they probably don’t have many arguments about leaving the toilet seat up.

Trip Tucker's death in Star Trek: Enterprise's controversial finale still irks fans almost 20 years later. Connor Trinneer, who played Trip, believes fans should "get over it" and move on from the character's demise. Trinneer recently voiced Trip Tucker for the first time since Enterprise's cancelation in a non-canonical Star Trek: very Short Treks episode.
Star Trek: Enterprise's Connor Trinneer is at peace with the death of Commander Trip Tucker, but he knows many fans still aren't over it. Trinneer played Trip, the Chief Engineer of the Nx-01 Enterprise commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), in all 4 seasons of Enterprise. Trip was a popular character whose death in Star Trek: Enterprise's controversial series finale, "These Are The Voyages...", remains a sore spot with fans nearly 20 years later.
As reported by TrekMovie aboard the Star Trek Cruise, Connor Trinneer hosted his fellow Star Trek: Enterprise cast...

It's worth recalling that "Star Trek: Enterprise" is one of the less popular "Star Trek" shows. "Enterprise" debuted in late September 2001, and was set about a century before the events of the original "Star Trek" series. It followed the adventures of the very first human vessel sent on a long-range space voyage, and took place at a time when a lot of familiar "Star Trek" technologies/notions hadn't been invented yet; there were no tractor beams, no shields, no human-safe transporters, and no Prime Directive. "Enterprise" clearly wanted to revive the old-world frontiersmanship so familiar to fans of the 1966 series.
"Enterprise," however, only lasted four seasons; the three previous Trek shows ran for seven years each. The series was canceled in 2005, and, at the time, it seemed like "Star Trek" was pretty much over and done with. Some might credit the show's writing as a culprit for its unpopularity; it...
