What do you do when the plug is pulled permanently on your TV show, with just a handful of episodes to go? How do you wrap up over a decade of storylines and characters in twenty-five minutes? How do you mark the end of an era? That was the dilemma facing the makers of Byker Grove, the occasionally-gritty teen drama about a Tyneside youth club when it was finally axed in 2006. The show had been a tea-time institution, running on BBC One every autumn since 1989 The last episode of the eighteenth and final series went out on December 10th, fifteen years ago this week.
The show’s final story has gone down in history as one of the all-time bonkers meta TV endings. In the episode, titled ‘Deus Ex Machina’, the teenage Grovers learn that they’re characters in a TV show, manipulated for the entertainment of an omnipotent writer,...

For as long as I can remember — dating back to the days of the WWE Smackdown vs Raw series of video games — I’ve wanted developer Yuke to dump the tired old gameplay formula that has formed the basis of their long-running WWE series of games. Strangely though, WWE 2K19 doesn’t do a lot different from previous iterations, but the small changes they have made to the gameplay make it a lot more focussed on presenting the pro-wrestling product as it should look and feel.
If you are a fan of pro wrestling in general, you may well consider it to be an art form in its own right. Matches such as Steve Austin vs Bret Hart, The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels, and Christian vs Randy Orton show the audience something deeper than just a fight between two people. There’s a story to be told, and it’s...

As much as WrestleMania is the be-all and end-all of WWE’s calendar year, it’s certainly not the only evening on the company’s schedule worthy of attention. In recent years, some of the company’s most amazing surprises have come just 24 hours after the show of shows. The Raw after WrestleMania has played host to some very newsworthy debuts and returns.
In 2012, Brock Lesnar made his return to WWE, stepping foot in a Raw ring for the first time in eight years and attacking John Cena. Elsewhere on the card, Albert returned to the company under the name Lord Tensai, dominating Alex Riley in what looked to be the start of a major push.
In 2014, Nxt Women’s Champion Paige answered WWE Divas’ Champion Aj Lee’s open challenge, debuting on the main roster and capturing Lee’s championship in one fell swoop. Rusev, who had appeared in the Royal Rumble,...

WWE Hall of Famer Scott Hall wants to be a full-time trainer in Nxt.
Hall got a taster of what it’s like to live the life of a Performance Center trainer during the WWE Network series Breaking Ground. William Regal brought his former WCW colleague in to help the Nxt Superstars in with their promo class. Hall was shown given one-on-one advice to Apollo Crews, questioning whether the former number one contender for the Nxt Championship “really talked like that, though.”
It seems that the four-time WWE Intercontinental Championship wants more.
“Career-wise, I’d love to be working with the young guys at Nxt,” he told Extra Mustard.
“But I’m not going to sweat that–if it’s meant to happen, it’s meant to happen. I’ve been invited to go down there twice, but I wouldn’t mind a full time gig there.”

WWE.com have published an interview with Performance Center trainer Matt Bloom where the Bullet Club to WWE rumours were addressed.
The entire wrestling fraternity seems to be aware that the Club’s members Aj Styles, Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson – as well as former Iwgp Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura – have signed deals with WWE. The Nwo-inspired clan’s arrival now seems a formality after WWE started running rumour posts and interviews about them on .com.
Even though the group was formed after Bloom – known as Giant Bernard in the Far East – had returned to WWE, he worked with Messrs Styles, Gallows and Anderson – teaming with Anderson for three years as Bad Intentions.
During the interview, Bloom touched on how Finn Balor came up with the idea one night ‘with his buddies,’ while he explained how their popularity is worldwide as “there are Bullet Club shirts at U.

Bill DeMott has stepped down as head trainer of the WWE performance centre amid allegations of misconduct, neglect and abuse from several former developmental talents. Former WWE superstar and current Nxt commentator Matt Bloom has taken temporary charge in DeMott’s absence.
It is unknown whether WWE will hire somebody else for the position or if Bloom will be able to convince officials that he is the right man for the job. Bloom intimated in a tweet dated March 8th that he planned on ‘busting through’ the doors that DeMott’s dismissal have opened for him.
Bloom, alias Baldo/Prince Albert/A-Train/Giant Bernard/Lord Tensai/Sweet T/Jason Albert, certainly has the credentials and was a more featured player in WWE than DeMott ever was during his entire career. Bloom, who has been working in the performance centre since retiring from active competition in August, is reportedly well-liked by wrestlers and staff.

Since his WWE main roster debut at the Royal Rumble, Alexander Rusev has been featured prominently on Raw and Smackdown, although he’s yet to wrestle a match on those shows. WWE aired promo videos for several weeks with Rusev, along with manager Lana, cutting promos in foreign languages. That’s pro wrestling. Not speaking in English usually means evil, so that’s what the Bulgarian monster Rusev is. If you’re wondering about Lana, she’s actually an American named Catherine Joy Perry that used to live in Latvia when she was a child.
A new report from PWInsider suggests that Rusev’s first match was expected to take place on the Raw after WrestleMania 30 although there has been some talk that he could have a match at WrestleMania 30. If they choose to do a singles match, they better set up a feud with some babyface soon...

We are now at the Raw following TLC 2013, a show that ended with Randy Orton defeating John Cena to become the new, unified and undisputed WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
The WWE roster are on the stage as the show opens, and Triple H and Stephanie McMahon stand in the ring together before announcing their new champion, Randy Orton. Orton comes out to loud boo’s from the fans. He walks past the roster and the camera focuses on Daniel Bryan and John Cena, who stare at Orton sternly. Triple H and Stephanie grin at Randy as he enters the ring, obviously forgetting last week when they beat the snot out of each other again. Orton talks about how no-one had faith in him but he proved everyone wrong. We’ve heard this promo, from numerous guys, before, so it isn’t really that interesting. In fact, it’s white noise at this point.

Previously on: Randy Orton beat John Cena at "TLC" to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Daniel Bryan lost to The Wyatt Family and Cm Punk beat The Shield.
The big news: "WWE Raw" starts out with all of the superstars on the stage and The Authority in the ring, ready to celebrate Orton's achievement. Randy doesn't get much time in the sun though, because Cena finds a microphone and calls him an idiot, among other things.
He wants Daniel Bryan to get a match against the new champ and The Authority agrees, though Bryan doesn't get a title shot just yet. This sets up Orton being the whining heel champion all night. He complains in the ring and backstage, presenting himself as a spoiled brat. Just the kind of guy you want as the face of the company. He's also carrying both titles, by the way. They should just drop...

He said last week he questioned Triple H, which is obviously why he was attacked by Triple H’s “boys” last week. Punk says he doesn’t want anything to do with The Authority. Punk says he prides himself on being one of the “biggest anti-authority guys” in WWE history. Stephanie McMahon’s music cuts Punk off and she makes her way to the stage area with a smile across her face. Stephanie says that she hoped Punk...

Today in the modern world, time is our scarcest resource as a WWE fan. There is way too much content out there. Between the main shows, the B shows, and YouTube content the fan has become a little more discerning with their viewing patterns. Truth be told, not many people even watch Smackdown on Fridays. And It’s a shame that on Monday, WWE gave you a three-hour Raw show that in reality did not mean as much as the one-hour show Main Event or Nxt.
Manchester, England played host on the more important episodes on Main Event in quite some time. As previously announced on Raw, Natalya following the win in a tag match against Aj and Tamina received a Divas title shot against the Black Widow. It was really a great match. Welcome to this mid-October results and review write-up of WWE Raw. Let’s jump right into things, shall we?
Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and Jbl welcome us to the show, live from St Louis, Missouri, and Shawn Michaels is introduced. He comes to the ring to a loud pop and hasn’t lost a step as “Hbk”. He poses, old school, and takes the microphone. For those who don’t know, Shawn will be the special referee in the main event at “Hell in a Cell” in the cell match between Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton. The “Heartbreak Middle-Aged Man” talks about being the referee, he refers to himself as “H.B.Shizzle” again, silly show-stopper. Shawn talks about his hand in training Daniel Bryan. He “guarantees” that one man will leave the pay-per view as the new WWE champion. Randy Orton comes out, in front of his hometown crowd,...

It's time for another pay per view offering from WWE. This time, it's the inaugural "Battleground" show, which is main evented by another match between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship.
Technically this is the third outing between the two, though their bout at "SummerSlam" didn't have any actual fighting. This time there is no current WWE Champion, after Triple H stripped the belt off of Bryan following the shenanigans at "Night of Champions."
The night's other big match is a meeting between Cm Punk and Ryback. It's the latest chapter in Punk's battle with his former best friend Paul Heyman. Ryback cost Punk a match against Heyman at "Night of Champions," leading to this fight. Seeing as Bryan and Orton will likely keep going until "Hell in a Cell," this probably won't be the closing chapter in Punk and Heyman's story.
The scheduled card for the...

Raw begins with the new WWE Champion, Daniel Bryan, making his way to the ring to a loud reaction from the Cleveland crowd. Bryan celebrates in the ring but is quickly interrupted by the COO of WWE, Triple H. Triple H tells Bryan that there was a fast count in his match at Night of Champions and brings out the official referee from that match, Scott Armstrong. Armstrong says that he and Bryan had worked together, and Triple H proceeds to strip Bryan of the title as Orton leaves him lying with an Rko.
Backstage, Stephanie tells Orton that he isn’t what he used to be and that they might have to find a different face of the company if he didn’t prove himself. Orton looks angry.
We go to the ring for a Noc rematch between Us Champion Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler. The match is like...

Just a few days away from Detroit and the Night of Champions, WWE made quite the stop on the Main Event and Nxt. Was it the gold standard for the company or did they come up a little short? Let’s talk about that. We’re going to switch things up this week, beginning with Nxt.
Nxt begins with the Certified Gees Colin Cassidy and Enzo Amore coming out to a loud reaction. Enzo talks about his recent problems with Sylvester LeFort’s new legionnaire Alexander Rusev and Scott Dawson. LeFort comes out and insults the Italian imitators with his charges Capt. Roughneck Scott Dawson and the Hungarian warrior Alexander Rusev. The tag match itself was awkward as the two teams really didn’t gel well. Heel versus heel really doesn’t work all that well. The crowd was definitely behind Certified Gees of Amore and Cassidy. There was definitely...

WWE kicks off 2013 with the Royal Rumble and once again The Rock is back and this time he’s setting his sights on Cm Punk intending to dethrone him as WWE Champion and regain the title he last held 10 years ago! Plus, 30 or more Superstars compete in WWE’s historic over-the-top rope main event where one superstar earns a chance to main event WrestleMania 29.
The Royal Rumble has always been a favourite PPV of mine, ever since the glory days of Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior facing off mid-Rumble in 1990 (I was, and always will be, a huge Warrior fan). However recent years have seen the event turned into nothing more than an advert for Wrestlemania – and the 2013 Royal Rumble is no different. Taking place at the Us Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona and saw a number of long-standing (at least in wrestling terms) feuds come to a...

He’s here! He’s here! The Undertaker is back! Hurray! The Cm Punk situation is fixed … Oh wait, no it isn’t.
No big return this week for the Dead Man means Punk gets thrown into the WWE Championship situation and a match at next week’s show to determine the real number 1 contender.
Either Undertaker shows up next week or Punk’s getting in on the main event. It’s that simple. Let’s hope ‘Taker drags Punk to Hell and gives us something to look forward to for a few weeks.
Don’t fall of your chair with surprise but ring action was nothing spectacular again this week. The All American Racist Jack Swagger defeated Daniel Bryan in the match of the night while further seeds were sown for a Sheamus and Ryback match as The Shield again defeated them both and Chris Jericho in a 6 man tag.

I’d love to know who wrote The Shield’s lines for this week’s Raw. It seemed to me that as they stood and ranted about “The John Cena Problem” and the “Decade of injustice” those words could have been spoken by a plethora of WWE mid card talents who’ve perhaps been held back by The Cena Machine throughout their careers despite being way more talented than he is. It was a great decision to give The Shield some microphone time after week’s of not saying very much. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose are great talkers, Roman Reigns has a way to go but he’s pretty good at shouting which is kinda his role as enforcer anyway.
Utilising the blackout was a good idea but tell me how that makes the babyfaces look tough? When The Shield use that method to attack they’re called cowards.

In the aftermath of the Royal Rumble, we are officially on the Road to Wrestlemania. This is the time of year where all of the storylines from the past year reach their finale. It’s also the time of the year when at least 14 minutes of every broadcast must involve someone (or multiple someone’s) pointing and staring longingly at the Wrestlemania sign. Sidenote: This year’s Wrestlemania sign doesn’t feature the traditional Roman numeral layout of past signs, which much be confusing to people who are trying to figure out exactly what number “NY/NJ” is.
This Raw took place in Las Vegas so they busted out the good ol’ Raw Roulette. I’ve never been a huge fan of Raw Roulette for a number of reasons. The first reason is that there is nothing random about it. They clearly have the matches picked beforehand and only have...

I wonder if I can convince Virgin Media to refund me my £14.95 after last night’s Royal Rumble proved to be a monumental waste of money?
After what can only be described as a weak build up, the Royal Rumble finally hit out screens last night, leaving many WWE fans lost for words – and not in a good way. The show opened with the World Heavyweight Title match between Alberto Del Rio and The Big Show. This was nowhere near their previous match in terms of excitement and urgency, and would have been a much better fit for an episode of Smackdown, or better yet, a house show. After a sloppy back and forth, the match ended when Del Rio’s Bff Ricardo Rodriguez taped Show’s feet to the ropes preventing him from standing before the 10 count. Oh, and Bret Hart appeared and called Del Rio the Mexican Hitman.

I’ve followed WWE off and on since around 1991, when I was but an 8 year old. The business now, nearly 22 years later, is totally different, and yet exactly the same as it always was. Whilst the look and feel of the product has evolved over time, WWE has always had the ability to enthral, captivate and frustrate in equal measure, and in that regard some things never change.
A good example of this is the way in which matches and storylines are booked. Every once in a while an event transpires that genuinely surprises – like Edge cashing in his Money In The Bank contract in 2006 against a broken John Cena, who had seemingly once again demonstrated his invulnerability – until Mr. Copeland cashed in with ruthlessness and opportunistic timing. Likewise, Eddie Guerrero snatching the WWE title at No Way Out 2004 took me by surprise. Marty Jannetty answering Shawn Michaels’ challenge to...

Booker goes to name the winner but instead out comes The Boogeyman! making his WWE return. He smashes an alarm clock over his head, dances around and pulls out the worms.

Ryback says his hunger cannot be suppressed and Punk and his three men are his prey. He calls them out to the ring as a “Feed Me More” chant begins.
Vickie Guerrero comes out and says he won’t be tearing anything up. She says he had two chances at winning the WWE Title and blew it. She threatens to fine him or suspend him but instead she says she wants to see how Ryback can destroy people. She wants to know how big his appetite really his.

The current plan for this year’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view is for Cm Punk to defend his WWE Championship against John Cena in the co-main event, alongside Brock Lesnar vs Triple H.
Punk vs Cena would be a re-match from last year’s WWE SummerSlam main event which ended with neither man holding the belt when Alberto Del Rio cashed in his money in the bank briefcase to steal the title after Punk had beaten Cena and was laid out by Kevin Nash.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Lord Tensai will get a complete overhaul and makeover as a character after being dubbed “a flop” by Vince McMahon.
Matt Bloom, the former A-Train and Albert returned to the WWE shortly after WWE WrestleMania 28 and was given the gimmick of a Japanese warrior, which played up the success Bloom had enjoyed overseas since he originally left the WWE in 2004.
Tensai was given a big push upon his reintroduction but the decisive moment for the character came when he failed to impress WWE officials in his pinfall victory over John Cena at the main event of the April 16th Raw SuperShow in London. Tensai’s victory was to eventually build to a Tensai vs Cena feud that would culminate in matches at WWE Over The Limit and WWE No Way Out pay-per-view events but that poor performance led to a change of plans which now...

Hot on the heels of the news that “attitude era” superstar Matt Bloom (Albert, A-Train) is returning to the WWE as a henchman to John Laurinatis next month, comes word that Nelson Frazier Jr could also be making a comeback for the company.
Frazier is better known for the variety of gimmicks he had during his time with the WWF and WWE, including Mable, Viscera, Big Daddy V and King V.
It is being reported that the 40-year old former WWE Superstar was pulled out of appearing for Wild Out Wrestling’s “Betrayed” Event on March 31st at the Giant Flea Market in Union City, Tennessee because he has been booked by the WWE.
Frazier was expected to appear in a Team Kamala vs Team Showtime match but Kamala Jr revealed on Facebook last night that the event has been moved to April 14th because Big Daddy V’s work for the WWE.

International superstar Matt Bloom, who has been a big name in New Japan Pro Wrestling for years as Giant Bernard but is better known over here under the names Prince Albert, Albert and A-Train, has resigned with the WWE eight years after his release.
Wrestling Observer reports that Bloom will make his return to the company after next month’s WrestleMania 28, and that the current plan is for him to play the new henchman to John Laurinaitis.
The signing of Bloom is out of the left field as it’s rare the WWE sign up wrestlers who are 39 and especially those who didn’t hit the heights that were expected of them with the company previously. Though we have been hearing regular reports of Bloom impressing in Japan and as Giant Bernard is almost unrecognisable with his ring work which to be fair wasn’t bad in the WWE, he...
