Jigsaw continues the legacy of John Kramer (Tobin Bell) after his death but with two major twists, as is tradition in the Saw saga. Seven years after the supposed “final chapter” of the Saw saga with Saw 3D, an eighth installment arrived to shake up what the audience thought they knew about John Kramer and his whole history as the Jigsaw killer. Directed by the Spierig Brothers, Jigsaw introduces viewers to a new group of “players” in Jigsaw’s twisted games, all of them chosen as they have some dark confessions to make.
Parallel to the game, Jigsaw follows the efforts of Detectives Brad Halloran (Callum Keith Rennie) and Keith Hunt (Clé Bennett) to find the copycat Jigsaw killer that has started this new game, as Kramer died in Saw III. Working with Halloran and Hunt is pathologist Logan Nelson (Matt Passmore) and his assistant Eleanor Bonneville (Hannah Emily Anderson...

A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). Looking back at the project now, van Heijningen has some regrets over the way the special effects were handled on the film, and that he was never able to make the sequel they had plans for.
Directed by van Heijningen from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and based on the short story Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell (using the pen name Don A. Stuart), The Thing 2011 has the following synopsis: After Norwegian researchers discover an alien ship buried in the ice, paleontologist Kate Lloyd joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. She finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago but, in fact, is about to awake. Freed from its icy prison,...

"I know he isn't what you expected... give it time, relationships can be tricky though." Quiver Distribution has released the first trailer for an indie comedy titled The Exchange, set in the 80s in Quebec. This hasn't premiered at any fests, but is opening this July anyway. A socially awkward boy convinces his family to take an exchange student but it doesn't turn out as planned. Hoping to find friendship with this "mail-order best friend" from France, he discovers that the student, named Stéphane, is not as sophisticated and cultured as he assumed. Starring Ed Oxenbould as Tim, Avan Jogia as Stéphane, with Justin Hartley, Jennifer Irwin, Paul Braunstein, Jayli Wolf, and David Huband. This actually looks way better than it sounds, another of the awkwardly hilarious indie comedies that used to play at SXSW & Sundance. It's worth a look. Here's the first official trailer for Dan Mazer's The Exchange,...

When Jigsaw was first announced by the folks at Lionsgate, and Saw: The Final Chapter was no longer the swan song promised, horror fans were understandably worried that the series was about to go one step too far and, dare we say it, jump the shark. Now, with the film having finished up its theatrical run, it’s clear that there’s little to no gas left in the tank of this once beloved franchise.
True, Jigsaw wasn’t an awful movie, but it was made more for the hardcore fans than anyone else and those seemed to be the only people who really enjoyed it. Still, the studio isn’t giving up on the titular killer just yet and will be releasing the pic on Blu-ray next month. On January 9th, to be exact, when it’ll hit 4K Ultra HD and Blu-Ray Combo Pack, with a...

The box office was expected to take yet another hit this weekend, with three newcomers arriving, each of which debuting in less than 3,000 theaters. Sure enough, all three movies came in far under expectations, with Jigsaw, the eighth movie in the Saw franchise, coming out on top with a paltry $16.5 million, which managed to come in under even the most modest of expectations. Still, the movie had no troubles coming out on top, with the other two newcomers Universal's Thank You For Serving and Paramount's Suburbicon both severely underperforming.
While Thank You For Your Service was at least a critical hit, with a solid 77% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Jigsaw and Suburbicon failed to impress the critics, with the Saw sequel earning a 39% score on Rt with Suburbicon faring even worse, with a 29% score. Still, Jigsaw has already made its money back from a $10 million production budget, taking in a $5,525 per-screen average from 2,941 theaters.

Back from either the dead or a seven-year sabbatical when he last appeared in the now-misleading Saw 3D: The Final Chapter in 2010, the latest reincarnation of Jigsaw is largely more of the same, with a little less gore. Jigsaw’s “healing” games — a cross between Tony Robbins making his audience walk on hot stones and Dr. Phil yelling at “patients” — is just as cutthroat as The Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games, and then some.
What might make for a fun movie is a straight-forward drama from the point of view of John Kramer (Tobin Bell) about what the Jigsaw killer does to fabricate these devices and what he does with the rest of his time carrying out the kinds of things Matthew Barney can only dream about. It’s been six Billy-less Halloweens since Saw 3D closed the book on John Kramer’s legacy, but now – after executive consideration (aka “Who wants more money?”) – the Spierig Brothers look to scare-up familiar box office treats this October with Jigsaw. Seven straight years of torture-porn bloodletting (2004-2010), six years off – writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg should have Loads of sanguine grotesqueness stockpiled. That’s Lionsgate’s hook, right? You wouldn’t reboot an iconic horror franchise without good reason. Shock audiences, defy expectations and explore uncharted grounds. Prove that we need Kramer and company back in our lives! Don’t just toy with the same franchise devices Saw fans are used to – exactly like y’all did.

The question with a movie like “Jigsaw,” which was preceded by seven “Saw” movies and did not screen for press, isn’t “Is it good?” but rather “How bad is it?” The answer, dear reader, is “quite.” “Jigsaw” is quite bad.
Not that it matters much. The eighth installment in a horror franchise isn’t meant to be good; it’s meant to be gruesome. The Spierig Brothers’ contribution to the series is certainly that: One scene finds a team of medical examiners studiously examining a man with half his head blown off; another shows the results of a woman being injected with hydrochloric acid in all its gory detail. 13 years in, the filmmakers have all but given up pretending that such moments exist for any reason beyond their own sake.

Chicago – Boris Rodriguez’s “Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal” tells a laughably inane story ripe for B-movie matinées, yet insists on taking itself (mostly) seriously. The director has made no secret of the fact that he envisions his film to be a meditation on the “darkness of creativity,” and the price that must be paid in order for an artist to find sufficient inspiration.
That could easily make an intriguing subject for a motion picture (and has many times before), but Rodriguez’s metaphorical horror tropes are so obvious and synthetic that they bore when they should provoke. That isn’t to say the film is lacking in the acting department (it isn’t) or doesn’t have some spectacularly unnerving imagery (kudos to Dp Philippe Kress), but on a story level, “Eddie” comes up mightily short. It might’ve made a fine short film, but at 83 minutes, it runs out...

Chicago – There’s something deeper going on in “Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal,” opening tomorrow at Music Box. I think. It’s about a struggling artist who finds inspiration in a small town when he’s forced to serve as guardian for the title character. Don’t all artists have something in common with cannibals given the way they turn their own (or other people’s) insides into fuel for their creativity? While that’s an engaging and interesting starting place for a horror-comedy, Boris Rodriguez’s movie sadly ends up being neither an effective horror movie nor a memorable satire. It just kind of, pardon me for going there, sleepwalks through its clever set-up.
Thure Lindhardt, so great in “Keep the Lights On,” stars as Lars, a painter who goes to a snowy, secluded town to find his creative muse and does so in the most unexpected of places.

Title: Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal Director: Boris Rodriguez Starring: Thune Lindhardt, Dylan Smith, Georgina Reilly, Al Goulem, Paul Braunstein, Stephen McHattie A quirky but unfulfilling Canadian-Danish horror-comedy that offers up neither quite the deliciously mad slapstick-y gore of its title nor a more penetrating treatment of its character-rooted instincts, writer-director Boris Rodriguez’s “Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal” has a substantial helping of originality on its side, but not much in the way of inspired execution. A one-time darling of the art scene, inspiration-starved, foreign-born painter Lars (Thune Lindhardt) takes a teaching position in the small, snowy town of Koda Lake, where he’s enthusiastically received by a school headmaster, Harry (Al Goulem), seeking to put his burgh on [ Read More ]

Lars and the Killer Dude: Rodriguez Explores Art and Inspiration
While sporting a title that would seem to indicate a comedic mash up of bizarro horror tropes and cheeky zingers, Boris Rodriguez’ enjoyable debut, Eddie: The Sleepwalking Zombie (of which the addendum may very well be a tacked on marketing ploy as the title credits indicate) manages to make significant use out of its examination of inspiration and the path of successful artistry. While the film never quite manages to go deeper than a superficial tongue-in-cheek trifling, there are enough oddly fascinating elements to sustain interest from the Danish/Canadian co-production, mostly due to a surprisingly understated performance from Thure Lindhardt.
A once successful painter, Lars Olafson (Lindhardt), has been unable to produce any significant works of art for the past decade. At the suggestion of his art dealer, Ronny (Stephen McHattie), Lars takes a job as a teacher at...

We are all of us creatures of habit, and what is fresh and exciting to us can quickly become stale and taken for granted through repetition. Addiction is in part about trying to recreate that first thrill and failing, but pursuing it nevertheless. Whether it’s finding a new high, a new turn-on or, in the case of this movie, artistic inspiration, an addict can gradually cut off his or her peripheral concerns and blindly follow a necessarily doomed pursuit.
That may be a slightly odd way to think about a film with a title like Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal (the on-screen title is simply “Eddie”) – although it lives up to that too. It’s a fun exploitation movie, but what kept me interested was that, to my surprise, it was genuinely about something, beyond a sleepwalking cannibal. Like the best B-movies, it actually has ideas in its demented little head.

2011.s The Thing is an unnecessary CGI-slick prequel to John Carpenter.s 1982 classic sci-fi/horror film The Thing. It isn.t horrible and does several things right, but is easily forgettable as soon as the end credits roll. Based on John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There?," the prequel was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and written by Eric Heisserer. The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs, Jørgen Langhelle, Jan Gunnar Røise, Stig Henrik Hoff, Kristofer Hivju, Jo Adrian Haavind, and Carsten Bjørnlund. Heijningen and company do an excellent job of tying the prequel to Carpenter.s film (a fire axe placed...

New 'The Thing' movie delivered lots of thrills, extreme graphic violence & more. Universal Pictures recently released their new, very graphic/thriller, flick "The Thing" into theaters this weekend. I just got through watching it,and I thought it was very disturbing, yet entertaining. The violence was very graphic. I mean, they really left nothing to the imagination with this one. They showed me stuff that usually only surgeons get to see. The movie stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Jonathan Lloyd Walker, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Eric Olsen, Ulrich Thomsen, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Selm, and Jorgen Langhelle. In the flick, Dr. Sander Halvorson invited everyone on a field trip to dig up a very dangerous alien creature deep in Antarctica on a marooned colony. Little did they know, it would be their last trip. Apparently, this creature was supposed to be a major scientific discovery, and Dr. Halvorson was elated about it.
