The Fantastic Beasts films were meant to continue the Harry Potter series and expand the Wizarding World at a time when Star Wars and other franchises were also finding new ways to reinvent themselves. While the idea for the first film came from a fictional textbook, J.K. Rowling envisioned a massive saga spanning five films. One of the reasons for this was the inclusion of Gellert Grindelwald, the next major villain of the franchise after Voldemort.

Providing their audience with an unflinching snapshot of the life-or-death nature of armed conflict, war movies have formed an intrinsic part of popular culture since the earliest days of cinema, to the point that storied names in the vein of Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, and The Deer Hunter are widely regarded as some of the best movies of all time. Furthermore, many of the best war films of all time owe much of their success to a superb villain who carries the story with their wicked presence, serving as the perfect antagonistic foil.
In many cases, the villain is the movie's best character, with the actor tasked with bringing them to life producing a nuanced and compelling performance that has the potential to overshadow the efforts of the film's protagonists. From morally devoid war criminals and renegade soldiers to Machiavellian double agents, the best portrayals of war movie villains...

There were many Gellert Grindelwald actors throughout the Harry Potter franchise, especially as Fantastic Beasts brought him into the spotlight. Each iteration of the infamous wizard Gellert Grindelwald has been wildly different from the other, with each actor bringing their distinctive flavor to the role. Gellert Grindelwald is mentioned a few times throughout the Harry Potter books. However, his first official introduction was as an old "friend" hidden in Dumbledores past in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book.
It is revealed that Grindelwald and Dumbledore were extremely close in the past and planned to bring the Wizarding World out of the shadows and subdue the non-magical population. Dumbledore realizes the error in this plan and, after the death of his sister Ariana, distances himself from Grindelwald. Grindelwald went ahead with his plan but was eventually stopped by Dumbledore in a grand duel. This backstory was explored in Fantastic Beasts,...

The Indiana Jones franchise remains one of the most well-loved adventure series, following Harrison Ford's titular explorer as he embarks on constant adventures to uncover historical treasures. Throughout five films, Indiana Jones has discovered such timeless relics as the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Dial of Archimedes.
While Indiana Jones always comes out on top in the end, there are always plenty of villains who stand between him and the treasure. From Nazi archaeologists to Soviet warmongers, some Indiana Jones villains show off their incredibly intelligent minds in their battles with the heroic Dr. Jones.

You might remember English actor Julian Glover for his role as Walter Donovan, the villain of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." A Nazi collaborator who wants the Holy Grail to achieve immortality, he meets a grisly end when he chooses ... poorly.
In his native England, Glover was a renowned member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In Hollywood, though? He's a 6'2 British man, so, of course, he plays the heels, even in his later roles like Pycelle on "Game of Thrones." (Who knows if he'll show up in "3 Body Problem" with his former co-stars.)
"Last Crusade" was not Glover's first rodeo with Lucasfilm; he had a much smaller role in "The Empire Strikes Back" as Imperial General Veers. The general only shows up in the film's first act, but he leads the At-at assault on the Hoth Rebel base (with some insert shots of him riding in the...

Few deaths in the "Indiana Jones" films as quite as unforgettable as that of Pat Roach's Nazi mechanic in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Upon spotting Indy (Harrison Ford) duking it out with one of his fellow Nazi handymen near a plane preparing to take off, Roach's nameless, burly villain smiles to himself as he removes his shirt, clearly itching for a fight. He proceeds to give Indy quite the thrashing and might've well won their match, had he bothered to turn around in time and spot the spinning airplane propellor bearing down on him.
Roach had a knack for playing the heel, starting with his run on the British wrestling circuit. Having earned a black belt in Judo before becoming the National Judo Champion in 1960, Roach spent the next decade wrestling under such personas as "Big" and "Lord" Pat Roach, squaring off against the likes of Dwayne Johnson's grandfather,...

If nothing else, the Indiana Jones movies are great for watching Nazis get punched. Hitler's Germany makes for good, easy-to-despise villains, and the Third Reich's obsession with the occult dovetails easily into Indy's signature search for mystic artifacts. The franchise is always at its best with Nazis as the antagonists, a fact that the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny acknowledges.
But Raiders of the Lost Ark wasn't the first movie to feature Harrison Ford kicking Nazi butt. 1978's Force 10 from Navarone is regarded as a minor entry on his resume. But not only does it prominently feature the Third Reich as its villains, but a surprising number of actors went on to play Nazis in Indiana Jones movies. Having found a mother lode, Ford apparently didn't forget about them when Dr. Jones needed a few sparring partners.

In the film of Sinclair’s book, the writer ends up rerouting the story of his great-grandfather’s expedition to the Amazon to its own psychogeographic musings
Accompanying the book of the same name, Iain Sinclair extends his psychogeographic franchise out to the New World in this lightly dramatised documentary, which traces the 1891 trek of his great-grandfather Arthur Sinclair into the Amazon jungle to set up a coffee plantation for the Peruvian Corporation of London. Kicking off with testimony from the Asháninka people whose land was hijacked, his stated aim is a Conradian voyage upriver – only reversing the “romance” surrounding the colonial plunder of the time and still stinking out certain culture-war circles today.

Dull vampire pix were once as ubiquitous as zombie pix are now, but when a good one came along we’d certainly take notice. The predatory Fran and Miriam are a wholly new twist on the ‘Wicked Lady’ highwayman theme — the picture transcends the softcore horror genre with class and style. Fringe director José Ramón Larraz found himself filming in England, and his output outclassed what were passing for Eurotrash horror epics across the channel. How did he do it? The answers become clear in Arrow’s special edition. Although only available in a boxed set, it’s reviewed here separately.

Yesterday I reported how the box office figures and general reception for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them hasn't been exactly what Warner Bros. was hoping for. There's a lot of thought, within the industry, that the launch of the Fantastic Beasts franchise has somewhat missed the mark the studio was aiming for. In that piece, I speculated that future installments of the spinoff series- set in the same world as J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books- might become more Potter-centric in an effort to maximize its success.

This feature contains spoilers for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and other Harry Potter films.
For fans of Jk Rowling's Wizarding World, the newest adjunct to the Harry Potter franchise has been refreshingly unknown up until release. Although the new spin-off Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is set before the previous films, we don't expect that Rowling's planned five films will dovetail directly into The Philosopher's Stone and aside from a couple of references to wizarding history, it's uncharted territory.
The book version of Fantastic Beasts was published for Comic Relief in 2001 and purports to be an abridged, Muggle-worthy edition of Newt Scamander's in-universe work on magical creatures. On the other hand, the plot of the film is brand new, taking place during Newt's research into writing the book,...

Before David Bowie became a massive international rock icon, he logged his first movie role in Michael Armstrong's The Image, an obscure, black-and-white short horror film that has just been officially released for the first time online by the Wall Street Journal. Directed by Michael Armstrong, who could go on to helm such cult horror movies as Mark of the Devil and House of the Long Shadows, the film stars then-unknown actor Michael Byrne as an artist whose painting of a young man seemingly comes to life. Bowie was just 20 years old when the film was released and is magnetic as the elegant ghoul who torments his creator. “It got an X-certificate. I think it was the first short that got an X-certificate. For its violence, which in itself was extraordinary,” Armstong told the Wall Street Journal, which was given permission to post the film in its entirety by the David Bowie Archive.

Aging isn't for sissies, or so Bette Davis and the four protagonists of Quartet would have us believe. Throw that quote alongside the Bard's famous line about music being the food of love, and you've got the gist of Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut. Play on, indeed.
