Netflix is very quickly becoming the home of previous years’ box office disasters, and to prove a point, 2023’s crime thriller To Catch a Killer starring Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn is sitting at the top of the streamer’s movie chart. While the film is underrated by some, there is no way to deny that it was a complete flop at the box office, taking just $3.1 million at the box office on its initial release.
Damián Szifron directed and wrote the project, with Jonathan Wakeham also serving as a writer. Szifron and Woodley are also producers alongside Stuart Manashil (Watcher) and Aaron Ryder (Arrival). The movie plays out with very similar traits to The Silence of the Lambs, with a young agent being recruited by the FBI to track down a serial killer with her unique, disturbed view of the world. The synopsis reads:

In the peaceful Greek city of Yolcos, Pattie (Sonja Ball) is a mouse who dreams of becoming a hero like Jason (of And The Argonauts fame). Her opportunity comes when a statue is unveiled of Zeus (Josh Widdicombe), leaving Poseidon (Rob Beckett) in a jealous rage. He gives the citizens of Yolcos seven days to build a statue in his honour that is as beautiful as Zeus’ statue, or their home will be destroyed.
While she is inspired by the fantastical tales she read, Pattie is disheartened at how nobody believes in her dreams of heroism. This includes Sam (Mark Camacho), her adopted father that is a vegetarian cat who resorts to backstabbing duplicity to prevent Pattie from leaving. Intent on proving her naysayers wrong, the mouse...

To Catch a Killer takes us into a police investigation with a lot of rhythm and intrigue… at the beginning. Then the plot goes to the easy resolution.
It wrecks its initial promise.
To Catch a Killer (2023) Movie Review
A good leading duo, well set in a scary Baltimore, with some dizzying first scenes that promise something in the purest David Fincher style… but no, neither the bad guy has the strength of Kevin Spacey nor does the development contain so many elements and the force is quickly lost, despite some sequences with the merit of striving to maintain a tension that, according to the script, wants to be consistent with what a realistic criminal investigation would be.
But it isn’t either, and the fiction is too present to go unnoticed, the characters don’t end up fascinating within their fictional scope, nor do they end up being as...

"I don't think he's looking for destruction, I think he's looking for relief." Wow this is a must watch trailer. Vertical Ent. has revealed an official trailer for To Catch a Killer, another crime thriller to continue with the trend of murder films / series being released by the dozen these days. This will be opening nationwide in theaters in April. It borrows the very same title ("To Catch a Killer") from a popular two-part TV movie from 1992, also about a murder investigation, starring Brian Dennehy and Michael Riley. In this new film, set in Baltimore, a talented but troubled police officer (played by Shailene Woodley) is recruited by the FBI's chief investigator to help profile and track down an elusive mass murderer. In addition to Woodley, the film also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Jovan Adepo, Ralph Ineson, Rosemary Dunsmore, Jason Cavalier, and Mark Camacho. This looks way better than expected, almost like a proper,...

"All this gaming has prepared me to save my real life princess." Quiver has revealed an official trailer for a nerdy action comedy film titled Office Games, made by actor / director Christian de la Cortina. This is one of the most obvious Scott Pilgrim vs the World rip-offs so far, with gaming visuals added to the footage as a guy tries to rescue his true love. Or whatever. The only difference is it's set inside a gaming company's office, not on the streets of Toronto like Scott Pilgrim. When an obsessive gamer living in his parents' basement is forced to get a job, he embarks on the most epic quest of his life - to slay the corporate villains and save his princess. The film stars Evan Marsh, Jodelle Ferland, Darla Biccum, Christian de la Cortina, Eliot Ahdoot, Michael Mancini, with Daniel Stolfi and Mark Camacho. This all looks especially mediocre.

Uplifting refugee drama “Peace by Chocolate,” which marks the last film starring late great Syrian actor and director Hatem Ali, is set to world premiere at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival.
UTA Independent Film Group will be handling world sales on the English-language pic, which is directed by Canadian first-timer Jonathan Keijser and will bow as part of the fest’s online Tribeca at Home presentations announced today.
“Peace by Chocolate” is based on the true story of Tareq Hadhad who fled from war-torn Syria with his family and founded a now booming chocolate business in Canada called Peace by Chocolate.
The protag’s father is played by Hatem Ali, who passed away prematurely last December at 58. Ali was known across the Arab world as both an actor and the influential director of political TV dramas such as “The Long Night,” about three dissidents released from a Syrian prison after 20 years of incarceration.

"There are way more people out there doing good." Netflix has debuted the trailer for an indie drama titled Good Sam, directed by Kate Melville. The film about a good samaritan nicknamed, of course, "Good Sam", who starts leaving bags of $100,000 on doorsteps in New York City. A TV reporter named Kate Bradley is sent to investigate the mystery, which ends up turning her whole life upside-down. This is one of those funny concepts that on paper sounds like it could be a horror, or a thriller, or a dramatic thriller, with some crazy big twists and turns. But this trailer actually makes it look like a light-hearted uplifting romance, and it seems she's going to fall in love with (or discover something else wonderful) about this "Good Sam". Tiya Sircar stars as Kate, with a full cast including Chad Connell, Marco Grazzini, Mark Camacho, Elana Dunkelman, Daniela Sandiford, Jesse Camacho,...

Yesterday, 20th Century Fox debuted 10 new character posters for the eagerly-awaited X-Men: Apocalypse, featuring almost all of the main characters. Two characters were notably missing from yesterday's poster lineup, Oscar Isaac's Apocalypse and Ben Hardy's Archangel. Thankfully, 20th Century Fox rectified these omissions by releasing new characters posters today featuring these mutants.
British actor Ben Hardy will actually make his feature film debut as Archangel, after starring in the hit U.K. series EastEnders from 2013 to 2015. He will play one of the Four Horsemen alongside Michael Fassbender's Magneto, Olivia Munn's Psylocke and Alexandra Shipp's Storm. Oscar Isaac, on the other hand, is coming off a banner year in 2015, where he starred in the critically-acclaimed Ex Machina and the beloved blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

This summer, 20th Century Fox's X-Men prequel trilogy will come to a close with X-Men: Apocalypse, following 2011's X-Men: First Class and 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. While we wait for the next trailer to arrive, ahead of this highly-anticipated May 27 release, Imp Awards has uncovered 10 new character posters, which gives us a closer look at some of the main mutants. These posters feature Professor X (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp).
Notably absent from this lineup are the title villain Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), and the last member of Apocalypse's Four Horsemen, Archangel (Ben Hardy). We're not quite sure yet if more character posters will surface, but there is still plenty of time until the May 27 release date, so we'll have to wait and see.

Roland Emmerich may be best known for bringing ruin to major cities and famous monuments in film, but as a vocal campaigner for the Lgbtq community, there is perhaps no better director to helm upcoming real-life drama, Stonewall.
Charting the genesis of a gay rights movement that would go on to inspire a generation, Emmerich’s passion project centers around the 1969 riots and their ensuing police raid on the titular Inn at New York’s Greenwich Village. Toplined by War Horse‘s Jeremy Irvine, the Stonewall club became a dedicated safe haven for members of the Lgbtq community, who were constantly berated by the public and unjustly punished by the police force at the time. What followed was a series of explosive riots – riots and demonstrations that would go on to become a defining moment in America’s quest for equality.

Chicago – Although a post graduate degree in space/time continuum studies may be necessary for maximum enjoyment, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” still delivers a comic book wham-bam, and the series continues its exploration of recent history through the prism of a mutant universe.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
And in that parallel universe, the film creates several levels, all based on changing the past to affect a war torn present. That complexity is accomplished through some overwrought explanation and a story that deliberately takes its time, but the action sequences are breath-taking and well thought out, and is presented in 3D with beautifully composed comic book filmmaking – courtesy of veteran X-Men director Bryan Singer. The saga of the X-Men – originally created by Marvel Comics and now in its fifth film – can be formulated into multiple expressions of symbolism and wonder, and “Days of Future Past” throws it all into the cinematic winds and makes it whirl.

Scott Speedman discusses his character Boogie in Barney's Version, working with Paul Giamatti, future projects, and more.
Scott Speedman was first introduced to American TV audiences with his role as Ben Covington on the hit TV series Felicity. He transitioned easily into film with roles in the highly underrated cop drama Dark Blue, the hit vampire adventure Underworld, and The Strangers. His latest movie is Barney's Version, which was released in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on June 28. I recently had the chance to speak with this talented actor over the phone. Here's what he had to say.

This is the Pure Movies review of Barney's Version, directed by Richard J. Lewis and starring Paul Giamatti, Macha Grenon, Paul Gross, Atom Egoyan, Mark Camacho, David Pryde, Paula Jean Hixson and Mark Addy. Barney's Version is exactly what it claims to be, at least as far as the title goes - a highly partial 'version' of a life. What unfolds on-screen (or in the trailer, which gives away almost every plot point) is the self-justification of a maudlin, chauvinistic man who imaginatively recasts himself as both a hero and a victim. The film is billed as a heart-warming comedy, but perhaps this description only applies if one happens to be a male approaching his autumn years.
