Resident Alien stands out as a tasty blend of quirky humor, offbeat storytelling, and heartfelt moments amidst its sci-fi backdrop – and there are more shows like it out there. Resident Alien stars Alan Tudyk as Harry Vanderspeigle, a flawed, genocidal alien who poses as a small-town Colorado doctor and eventually becomes sympathetic to the human cause.
The show dives into everything from offbeat human interactions to larger existential matters. Whether it’s the off-kilter small-town atmosphere, clever humor, or supernatural storylines, there are a handful of sci-fi comedy shows that capture a similar balance likely to tick all the right boxes with Resident Alien viewers.

Some comedy shows take a while to get into their rhythm, but others manage to hook their audiences from the very first episode. It can take writers and actors some time to find the comedic flavor of a new show. Comedy relies so much on chemistry and timing that a perfect comedic pilot is rare. These things can take a long time to build up. However, some hilarious shows capture lightning in a bottle from their first outing.
There are many great comedy shows which started off a little slowly. Seinfeld, for example, has an odd first season that doesn't quite nail the comedic rhythms that the show is known for, and The Office takes some time to distinguish itself from its British counterpart. Not all comedy shows suffer from the same affliction, however. Shows like Futurama, How I Met Your Mother and Derry Girls hit the ground running.

Created by Seth MacFarlane, the popular Star Trek parody series premiered in 2017, most recently returning for an acclaimed season 3 in 2022. Now, Parks and Cons (via TheWrap) shares that Scott Grimes, who plays Lt. Gordon Malloy, offered an update on The Orville season 4 while attending the Star Trek Las Vegas convention.

Exclusive: Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!), Chelsea Frei (The Moodys), and Larry Joe Campbell (The Orville) have been set for guest star roles in the forthcoming second season of Fox’s popular workplace comedy Animal Control, starring Joel McHale.
Others set to appear in S2 guest roles, as previously announced, include Ken Jeong, Sarah Chalke, and Krystal Smith.
Premiering last February, the show created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. McHale plays Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is still the most well-read person in the room. Jason Sudeikis recalls a funny backhanded compliment Owen Wilson gave him while the pair were filming Sudeikis' first big studio movie as a leading man, Hall Pass. The movie, which was released in 2011, starred Wilson and Sudeikis as Rick Mills and Fred Searing, respectively, two men who are given a one-week hall pass by their wives during which they can do anything without retribution. Hall Pass is known for its underrated cast of characters played by iconic comedians.
While battling spicy wings on the YouTube show Hot Ones, Sudeikis was reminded of an experience he had on the set of Hall Pass. Sudeikis recalled how, during the filming of a scene at a sports bar, he actually ate the wings on the table while the crew was filming Wilson's takes. This prompted a rather odd compliment from Wilson. Check out the full quote and video below (quote begins at 10:...

Jason Sudeikis recently recalled a playful conversation he had with Owen Wilson while they were on the set of Hall Pass.
During production on the 2011 comedy, which also starred Steve Merchant, Jb Smoove and Larry Joe Campbell, the actors were filming a scene in a sports bar that involved them eating wings and talking.
“It was my first time being in a big studio movie, like lead, Owen and I are on the poster type thing,” Sudeikis said during an appearance on Hot Ones. “We’re going around, and we shoot like all people around the thing. You know, you have to keep moving the camera if you have the time and money, which they usually do for studio movies.”
He continues, “There were hot wings — they weren’t this hot,” he joked as he appeared to be visibly struggling with the wing he’d just eaten on the YouTube series.

St. Vincent delivered a faithful rendition of David Bowie’s “Young Americans” as part of Thursday’s Love Rocks NYC benefit, an all-star concert staged at New York’s Beacon Theater to benefit God’s Love We Deliver.
Backed by a massive band that included backup singers and a horn section, Annie Clark echoed blue-eyed soul-era Bowie, working the crowd and singing with a very Thin White Duke inflection.
St. Vincent’s appearance came one night after she covered Portishead’s “Glory Box” alongside the Roots on The Tonight Show.

What a shocking and heavy hour.
As far as elements go, 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 3 Episode 14 covered so many of them, bits of humor and fun, pain, grief, shock, and rage. They played with each of these emotions with their character, whether it was Tommy, Owen, or repeat offender causing calls, Al.

Larry Joe Campbell guest-starred in this hour as Al. He played the father with anger and impulse control issues who couldn't get it together right up to the tragic conclusion of his arc, and he was fantastic.

'Teacher of the Year' movie with Keegan-Michael Key. 'Teacher of the Year' movie: Smart and funny socially conscious comedy Teacher of the Year manages to pull off one of the more difficult balancing acts in filmmaking: it actually is smart while still being funny. Teacher of the Year is smart about education, both as a vocation and as an industry; and it's both character and dialogue funny, leaning heavily on the free-agent talents of Keegan-Michael Key, half of the comedy duo, Key and Peele. Of late, Key has been a valuable asset in a number of comedies looking for a boost, including a stand-out performance in Pitch Perfect 2, currently in theaters. In Teacher of the Year, his name is Principal Douche – though he insists on the french pronunciation. You can imagine the jokes. Guillermo del Toro and Legendary Pictures have confirmed that a sequel to Pacific Rim has been green-lit by the studio and will officially be making its way into theaters on April 7, 2017. In addition to the sequel, BuzzFeed has reported that an animated series set in the Pacific Rim universe is also being developed which may arrive before the second film is released.
The announcement of a sequel comes a very welcome surprise for many fans of the original film, which despite having favorable reviews from both critics and audiences, seriously underperformed at the Us box office. For over 2 years the team at Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco, Singapore and Vancouver worked tirelessly to bring Guillermo del Toro’s science fiction epic “Pacific Rim” to life. This reel represents a taste of the visual effects work the team was tasked with in creating everything from monstrous Kaiju to the man-made Jaegers and the environments they are seen in.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no...

Grown Ups 2 beats original Grown Ups, Pacific Rim disappoints on opening weekend: Box office (photo: Taylor Lautner in Grown Ups 2) Here’s a quick rundown of the top twelve movies at the North American box office this weekend, July 12-14, 2013. Universal’s Despicable Me 2, featuring the voices of Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig, was the no. 1 movie, with an estimated $44.75 million — down a not inconsiderable 46% — according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Despicable Me 2‘s cume currently stands at $229.23 million. The no. 2 movie was the $80 million-budgeted Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups 2 — which North American critics apparently feel plays out like a tragedy, what with a dismal 9% approval rating and 3.2/10 average at Rotten Tomatoes. Anyhow, American and Canadian audiences seem to be thirsty for tragedies: Grown Ups 2 scored $42.5 million and a solid $12,174 per-theater average. Besides Sandler, the Dennis Dugan-directed Grown Ups 2 also features Chris Rock,...

Pacific Rim weekend box office: Likely trailing Grown Ups 2, Despicable Me 2 (Photo: Charlie Hunnam in Pacific Rim) Despite a quite promising Thursday evening start, Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim should not get even close to the $50 million mark at the domestic box office this weekend, July 12-14, 2013. Del Toro’s homage to Japanese monsters movies of the ’50s and ’60s has lost quite a bit of steam, apparently after IMAX pre-sales ran their course. According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, Pacific Rim took in $14.62 million on Friday, July 12, including a better-than-expected $3.6 million from Thursday evening and midnight shows. Of Thursday’s figure, an estimated $835,000 originated from 331 IMAX theaters — out of a total of 3,275 venues. IMAX locations have likely continued to boost Pacific Rim‘s box-office fortunes throughout the weekend, but what about the film’s other 2,944 North American venues? Pacific Rim vs. Prometheus, Inception...

New Pacific Rim movie delivered great action, drama, special effects & more. Warner Bros. Pictures released their new hardcore action flick, "Pacific Rim,' into theaters this past Thursday. I just checked it out, and thought it was very fun and entertaining to watch as it served up major action, drama,an interesting plotline, and more. It stars: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke, and Diego Klattenhoff. In the new flick, giant monsters, named Kaijus, rose up through a portal in a crevasse beneath the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a war that takes millions of lives and quickly consumes humanity's resources. To combat the monsters, a massive, humanoid fighting machine, called Jaegers, was designed. It was simultaneously controlled by two pilots whose minds are bound in a neural link which lets them...

Pacific Rim box office: Guillermo del Toro’s monster movie to reach $50 million in North America? (Photo: A shirtless Charlie Hunnam uses his biceps to scare off the Kaiju in Pacific Rim) Could Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim reach $50 million at the domestic box office by Sunday evening (July 14, 2013)? Thursday evening and midnight shows brought in a somewhat better-than-expected $3.6 million according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Comparisons to Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which took in $3.56 million from midnight screenings in early June 2012, are iffy; after all, Scott’s horror sci-fier was rated R, and, unlike Pacific Rim, it wasn’t sold as a cinematic fanboy event along the lines of Michael Bay’s Transformers movies, or Man of Steel, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and the like. And fanboy events (much like fangirl events, e.g., the Twilight movies), unless accompanied by phenomenal word of mouth and highly positive reviews,...

Pacific Rim review: No mistaking it for a character piece (photo: Kaiju attacks Sydney in Pacific Rim) [See previous post: "Pacific Rim Review: Dumb Movie, Smart Director."] After losing his brother to the Kaiju, Raleigh went off the grid for five years only to be called back into service by his commanding officer, the improbably-named Stacker Pentecost (an imposing, riveting Idris Elba). After Raleigh disappeared, the Jaeger program was cancelled in favor of a new strategy that has proven ineffective. So Pentecost needs Raleigh to co-pilot one of four remaining Jaegers (one each from Russia, China, Australia, and America) in a last-ditch effort to save the world. His co-pilot might be a rookie who has her own history with the Kaiju, the reserved yet capable, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). In focusing almost entirely on lumbering, clanging, roaring fight sequences, Guillermo del Toro knows what he’s sacrificing and, in his quest to bring childhood favorites like Godzilla and War of the Gargantuas to big-budget life,...

Film: "Pacific Rim"; Cast: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff and Brad William Henke; Director: Guillermo del Toro; Rating: **
"Pacific Rim" is a futuristic science fiction film that deals with the man versus nature conflict. The plot works on the premise - "To fight monsters, we created monsters".
It's a story layered with hints of a potentially rich but underdeveloped science fiction mythology, full of satirical and hypothetical touches that are ultimately overdosed with gladiator-style fighting sequences between the monsters and metallic robots that represent the film's raison d'etre.

The thing that may be most interesting about Pacific Rim is that in a movie that uses so much technology to tell a story about machinery, there’s so much humanity. But then again, Guillermo del Toro has always managed to take some truly unusual ideas and infuse them with a shocking amount of relatability; who else would make a character like Hellboy a forlorn romantic lead?
Daily Dead spoke to del Toro earlier this week via telephone, where the filmmaker explained how he conceived the film with typical effusiveness. In addition to talking about, yeah, the mechanics of his monsters-versus-robots story, he explored the larger, humanistic underpinnings of telling a story that, again, superficially seems to be about special effects and action. Finally, he told us a little bit about the work he’s done so far on a couple of new projects, Crimson Peak and The Strain.

Pacific Rim has debuted a new trailer.
The trailer focuses on Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi preparing to take the Jaegar robot into battle.
Guillermo del Toro's film is set in a future where mankind is menaced by monsters called Jaegars that have risen from the ocean.
Humanity's only hope rests in an old Jaegar piloted by a washed up veteran (Hunnam) and an unproven rookie (Kikuchi).
Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr, Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff will also feature in the movie.
Del Toro has spoken out against rumours of poor box office predictions, saying that the movie is "on the right track".
Pacific Rim will open in 3D, IMAX 3D and 2D cinemas on July 12.

You may have read articles or Twitter comments that talk about how Pacific Rim is “not tracking well.” This doesn’t mean that the movie is bad, but that the marketing hasn’t excited enough average moviegoers. While genre fans are familiar with the talents involved on the project, there has been a big focus on monsters versus robots and not on the actors.
That’s starting to change with the big marketing push for Pacific Rim and Warner Bros. has released a final trailer that gives us a better look at the characters from the movie. We also have a brand new viral video with Ron Perlman trying to sell us Kaiju Remedies…
