When a TV show has been on the air for, like, a millennium, keeping things fresh and introducing new characters is the only way to keep even die-hard viewers glued to their screens. Considering ABC's Grey's Anatomyhas captivated prime-time viewers since 2005 (being a staple series in the Shondaverse), it has mastered the art of perfect comfort television via impressive character development and juicy storylines involving imperfect but sexy doctors.
Season 20 of the five-time Emmy-winning medical drama saw Natalie Morales guest star as pediatric surgeon Dr. Monica Beltran, who's more interested in being a great doctor than getting buddy-buddy with her Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital colleagues. After appearing in six episodes of Grey's Anatomy Season 20, Morales officially joined Season 21 as a recurring cast member.
Morales spoke with MovieWebahead of the theatrical release of her film My Dead Friend Zoe, discussing what made her come back to Grey's for another handful of episodes as the no-nonsense Dr.

When "Grey's Anatomy" premiered as a mid-season replacement in March of 2005 thanks to creator and showrunner Shonda Rhimes, it's safe to say that nobody genuinely thought it would keep running and running and running until it became the longest-running medical drama in TV history. As of this writing, the show is partway through airing its 21st season — and even though Ellen Pompeo, the star of the series who puts the Grey in "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Meredith Grey, left the show as a main cast member in its 19th season, it shows no signs of stopping.
Due to the fact that, in real life, hospitals change personnel with some regularity and new intern classes begin their residencies each summer, "Grey's Anatomy" is able to remain (relatively) fresh even with hundreds of episodes under its belt, introducing new intern classes every few years to keep the momentum going. Beyond that, though,...

Jessie T. Usher recently discussed Netflix's upcoming series Pulse, likening its feel to the early seasons of ABC's acclaimed, long-running medical drama series, Grey's Anatomy. Usher, most well-known for playing the superhero A-Train in the fan-favorite Prime Video series The Boys, will play the Emergency Medicine Resident Sam Elijah in Pulse.
Usher made the Grey's Anatomy comparison in an interview with Screen Rant. The actor refused to give away key story points but called the upcoming Netflix show sexy, romantic, and dramatic. He also expressed that Pulse was a nice change of pace from his experience filming The Boys. "Yeah, Pulse is a medical drama, so Netflix, it'll be airing sometime this spring," he began. "I play Dr. Elijah. I can't give away story points on it, but it has the feel of early Grey's Anatomy. It's sexy, and it's romantic, and it's dramatic in a lot of ways.

132 rooms. 157 suspects. 1 dead body. That’s the premise behind The Residence, a comedic mystery thriller produced by Shonda Rhimes that's set to hit Netflix this March. Starring Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black fame, the new trailer for the series was recently released, and showcases all the drama and laughs we can expect from the Shondaland production, which also features a slew of other heavy hitters like Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, and Bronson Pinchot.
Inspired by the book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower, the trailer for Rhimes' latest (seen below) makes it seem like Clue set in the White House. It opens inside the hallowed halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, where we meet Aduba's character of Cordelia Cupp, a consultant with the Metropolitan Police Department who's tasked with unraveling the mystery behind a dead body...

Grey's Anatomy has been going for almost two decades. The 21 seasons and nearly 450 episodes have introduced viewers to plenty of characters, but few have been as popular with fans as Dr. Derek Shepherd, who's been affectionately referred to as "McDreamy." Derek is a neurosurgeon who works at the same hospital as the main character, Meredith Grey, and even had a relationship and kids with her. Patrick Dempsey won over audiences' hearts as Derek Shepherd, and even received the honor of People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" in 2023 after showing so much charisma in Grey's Anatomy.
The show controversially killed Derek Shepherd in episode 21 of season 11, titled "How to Save a Life." The episode is one of the lowest-rated episodes on IMDb, with a user rating of 5.6/10 with more than 3,000 reviews, mostly annoyed with how Derek was killed in the episode. However, McDreamy's death was a necessity, especially with situations in the background of the show's production.

Grey's Anatomy has seen many characters come and go during the course of its run, and among those who haven't been seen in a while is Martin Henderson's Dr. Nathan Riggs. Over seven years later, the actor has confirmed that he's open to the idea of returning as his fan-favorite character.
While speaking with Deadline to promote his series Virgin River, Henderson was asked about the possibility of returning to Grey's Anatomy. He teased that a return is possible, feeling that Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes would be supportive of a return of Dr. Riggs. It all comes down to scheduling, as Henderson is keeping pretty busy with his post-Grey's work.

Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most beloved and longest-running TV shows created by Shonda Rhimes. The show’s 20th season recently dropped, and it’s hard not to appreciate the elements that endured throughout the show’s nearly two-decade run. In 2005, Grey’s Anatomy aired as a medical drama that could compete with other shows like ER, which Grey's has long since outlasted.
The show quickly shot into the spotlight and became a fan favorite because of its masterful blend of medicine and human experience. While Grey's highlights surgery and medical research, much of the focus belongs to the characters. As such, there's a never-ending stream of romances for fans to love. But one of them existed at the beginning.
Updated on December 11, 2024, by Jordan Iacobucci: Grey's Anatomy may have killed off Derek Shepherd years ago, but his legacy continues to live on in the iconic procedural series to this day.

The second season of Accused was quite the experience.
The anticipated series returned with a studded and shortened season. While it made do with its eight episodes and strong cast, the overall conclusion is that the sophomore season was underwhelming and inconsistent.
It didn’t meet the same standards as the first season. But let’s get into all of that with our Accused Season 2 Report Card.
Best Episode – Accused Season 2 Episode 2: April’s Story (Steve Wilkie/Fox)
Taylor Schilling was fantastic as an overwhelmed, working wife and mother to a child with behavioral issues on Accused Season 2 Episode 2.
The hour was one many could resonate with as it all boiled down to having an awful day. Everything that could go wrong went wrong for April as work, family, and life demands probed at her at once.
Road Rage takes center stage, but the hour does a fantastic job...

It’s been 20 seasons since fans first saw Meredith Grey walk into Seattle Grace for the first time. Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster ride for the audience as they experienced their favorite characters being introduced and eventually killed off. For Grey’s Anatomy, there’s no such thing as a character who can’t die.
Several beloved characters have bit the dust either due to backstage drama or their characters simply reaching the end of the line story-wise. Dr. Andrew DeLuca was one such character who quickly became a fan-favorite in the famed medical drama. He also had one of the show's most tragic storylines, and his exit meant more than just lazily tying off a character arc.

This story contains spoilers for Grey's Anatomy Season 21, Episode 8, titled "Drop It Like It's Hot."
The big character exits fans were warned about ahead of Season 21 of Grey's Anatomy are coming to be. Shortly after the departure of Jake Borelli's Levi Schmitt, Midori Francis would depart the following week, which saw Midori Francis in her final appearance as Dr. Mika Yasuda.
In an interview with Deadline, Francis opened up about her exit from Grey's Anatomy. The character's exit episode saw Mika returning after the automobile accident that resulted in the death of her sister, and the trauma endured has left the doctor unable to properly work. Ultimately, Mika decides to leave Grey Sloan, as "everything around me reminds me of her." It was a sad way to see the character go, though Francis is very happy with the storyline from a creative standpoint.

Grey's Anatomy lost one of its original cast members in Season 16 when Justin Chambers left the series. While he was only one of several original stars to have departed the ABC medical drama, Chambers had put in more than a decade of work as Dr. Alex Karev. That meant his exit was shocking to fans, especially when they were told why the actor and Alex Karev were leaving.
Not only was it surprising that Justin Chambers would no longer be part of the Grey's Anatomy ensemble, but the storyline chosen for Alex Karev's departure also proved controversial. While the series is still considered one of the best romantic dramas on network television, digging into Alex's past with fellow doctor Izzie Stevens was not the sendoff many viewers were expecting. So why, exactly, did Justin Chambers leave Grey's Anatomy?

The first trailer for Waltzing With Brando, the new biopic about the iconic Godfather actor has dropped and we are, frankly, blown away by Billy Zane's take on Marlon Brando. Karev being an original Grey's Anatomy character makes his potential return more sought-after than others, but Justin Chambers comments against such a return 4 years after Karevs departure paint a better picture for Jos future. Chambers left Greys Anatomy as the show was in its 16th season, and while his character didnt have a tragic ending, Alex Karevs exit nonetheless was one of Greys Anatomys most controversial. Between his last appearance happening via voiceover and the fact he left those he considered his family at Grey Sloan by saying goodbye via letter, Karevs exit didnt reflect the characters steps forward.
Throughout the 16 Greys Anatomy seasons Karev was a part of, he went through one of the most radical character developments, going from someone selfish, sometimes unfair, and detached from his peers to being Merediths person once Cristina moved to Switzerland and someone who generally cared about others. The following contains major spoilers from Accused Season 2, Episode 2, "April's Story," which debuted Tuesday, Oct. 15 on Fox.
Accused Season 2, Episode 2, "April's Story" does a 180 from the Fox show's heartwrenching season premiere -- but it's no less intense or well-crafted. The episode maintains the drama's commitment to deeply thought-out scripts, portrayed by actors who understand the layers to the material. And in doing things almost completely different from "Lorraine's Story," it reminds audiences how broad of a range this anthology series has.
"April's Story" features Orange is the New Black star Taylor Schilling as April Harris, a hard-working nurse who finds herself having the worst day of anyone short of Jack Bauer. As audiences see all the little things that push April to the edge, they're also horrified by what her actions lead to. Former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Justin Chambers is eager to take on new challenges in his acting career. Chambers spent 16 seasons playing Dr. Alex Karev on the hit ABC medical drama before leaving in 2020. In a recent interview, the actor said he wants to portray different types of characters.
Chambers acted in an episode of the Fox crime drama “Accused.” He played someone unlike Karev, bringing a complex and antagonistic role to life. Chambers said this gave him a chance to show audiences another side of his abilities. It also reignited his passion for the craft of acting.
The actor found the experience of working on “Accused” refreshing due to its anthology format. Each standalone episode tells a complete story. Chambers said this excites viewers with fresh plot lines in every installment while keeping the quality high.
While grateful for his “Grey’s Anatomy” success, Chambers now aims to diversify his roles.

Justin Chambers is ready to “play someone so different” from his character on Grey’s Anatomy.
The actor, who played Dr. Alex Karev for 16 seasons on the long-running medical drama before announcing his exit in 2020, used his guest appearance on the crime anthology series Accused as the type of role he’s looking to play in the future.
“What drew me in was the chance to play someone so different from Alex Karev,” Chambers recently told Us Weekly. “After years of being a familiar face as Karev, it felt exciting to step into a more complex, antagonistic role and show a different side of myself as an actor.”
While Chambers enjoyed his time on Grey’s Anatomy and appreciates all the opportunities it’s given him, he also had “a blast” working on something that was the complete opposite of the popular ABC show.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Accused Season 2, Episode 2, “April’s Story.”] Accused‘s latest episode, “April’s Story,” tapped into the pitfalls of road rage as Taylor Schilling‘s titular character April took the stand for sentencing after her involvement in an accident that left a man (played by Grey’s Anatomy vet Justin Chambers). While April didn’t directly kill this man, their cat-and-mouse road game led to an accident that saw her scrambling to his side in an effort to pull him from his burning car. When the man awakens though, he gets combative and starts to come at her with debris from the accident, but his unfortunate timing leaves him directly in the path of an oncoming freight truck, killing him. The fight began when the man accosted April in the parking lot of a coffee shop, claiming she’d parked too close to him and harmed his car, but things took a...

The long-running series Grey's Anatomy has had many casting shakeups over the years, and some actors have been cut loose from the series long before they were ready to say goodbye. That applies to April Kepner actor Sarah Drew, who can still recall how it seemed "unjust" when she was fired without warning from her role in the series back in 2018.
Per TVLine, Drew opened up on her Grey's Anatomy exit during an interview for the Call It What It Is podcast, which is hosted by former cast mates Jessica Capshaw and Camilla Luddington. At the time of her firing six years ago, Drew made a comment that compared getting fired from the series to "attending [my] own funeral," and it was given a significant amount of attention in the media. Drew now clarifies that it was the "outpouring of love" from those offering support that made the experience feel like...

When Justin Chambers exited Grey's Anatomy in 2020 after 16 seasons, his goal was to go on and diversify his portfolio with roles different from Dr Alex Karev. It's taken four years, but his plans are gradually coming together as the actor's second post-Grey's project is releasing tonight. Chambers is among the ensemble to join Season 2 of the anthology series, Accused which tells a distinct story per episode. He will appear in Season 2, Episode 3, titled, April's Story, starring alongside Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black), and Danny Pino (Law & Order: Svu). Ahead of the episode's premiere on Fox tonight, the network has released a teaser offering a sneak peek at the central characters of the story.

It's not unusual to see network shows bring back fan-favorite characters, no matter how long they've been absent from the show, more so for Grey's Anatomy. Grey Sloan Memorial frequently shuffles between old and new characters, a recent example being the return of Dr. Sydney Heron 17 years after her last appearance with actress Kali Rocha returning to reprise the role. While Rocha's return was divisive among the fandom, one character that would almost unanimously excite fans if they were to come back is Dr Alex Karev, played by Justin Chambers. Chambers is one of the show's original cast members who spent 15 years playing the fan-favorite character before his heartbreaking departure in 2020.

Grey's Anatomy's Alex Karev actor, Justin Chambers, addresses whether he'll return to the show after four years. Chambers left Grey's Anatomy after 16 seasons of playing Alex Karev. In the series, Karev learned about the existence of his two children and decided to leave Grey Sloan and his wife Jo (Camilla Luddington) to reunite with his ex-wife Izzie (Katherine Heigl). His departure came as a shock to the show's long-time fans and also received backlash.
Speaking to TVLine while promoting his new show, Accused, the actor shut down the possibility of returning to the franchise any time soon by saying, "That chapter is closed for now." Though he is grateful for his time on the ABC drama, Chambers is content with seeking out other opportunities for the time being. Check out his comment below:

Heading into the second season of “Accused,” series developer Howard Gordon and showrunner Daniel Pearle didn’t have a clear overarching theme in mind. What they had instead was a goal.
“Honestly, we just wanted to be better,” Gordon told TheWrap. “We’re testing the limits.”
That’s a tall order considering the fact that “Accused” is already a difficult feat of television. Each episode of the anthology series plays out like its own little mystery, following someone else who’s on trial. Through a series of flashbacks that play out over the course of the episode, the audience slowly learns why they’re in the courtroom before the series ultimately reveals their crimes and sentencing. According to Pearle, one of the main questions they faced during the Fox drama’s first season was how do you make a series of completely different standalone stories feel connected. But as the...

The new season of Grey's Anatomy hit the ground running with a heated altercation between Doctors Catherine Fox and Miranda Bailey. Actor Debbie Allen breaks down that scene, revealing she was the one who insisted on its sobering ending.
Audiences rooted for Dr. Miranda Bailey (played by Chandra Wilson) when she stood up to Dr. Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) during Grey's Anatomy's Season 21 premiere, which opened with Catherine berating and belittling the hospital's interns. The situation came to a head when she fired Miranda on the spot for chiming in; Catherine bit back with personal insults, prompting Miranda to slap her. Episode 1 sees Miranda dealing with the fallout and a sobering update on Catherine's condition. Fans agree Catherine is one of Grey's Anatomy's biggest villains; her increasingly overbearing attitude and worsening condition could be her unraveling. Allen told The Hollywood Reporter she insisted on that slap scene to make her character even more unlikeable.

When Grey's Anatomy returned to ABC for Season 21 on September 26, 2024, fans were met with familiar faces and a fond farewell to one of the show's most instrumental programmers. The premiere episode, "If Walls Could Talk," was officially dedicated to Stephanie Leifer, a longtime ABC programming executive who spent a major portion of her career working to advance the success of Grey's Anatomy.
Although fans may not recognize Leifer as a household name, her lasting contributions to Grey's Anatomy speak volumes. As such, it's only fitting to reflect on who Leifer was, how she came aboard the show, and what she did to help make Grey's Anatomy the longest-running American medical drama in TV history. It's also important to hear what Leifer's friends and colleagues felt about her dedication to ABC and how her creative legacy will endure long after her untimely passing at age 56.
