The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu writer/director Robert Eggers has dealt with some dark subject matter over the course of his career – but the darkest story is yet to come. No, not in his recently announced Labyrinth sequel, but in another recently announced project: the creature feature Werwulf, which he’s making for Focus Features, aiming for a Christmas Day 2026 theatrical release.
Eggers has written the screenplay for Werwulf with Sjón, his co-writer on the Viking saga The Northman. Details are being kept under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter’s sources told them “the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated to Old English. Initially, Eggers was planning on shooting the feature in black and white, but that is no longer the case. Suffice to say that...

It has been a full couple of weeks for Robert Eggers. Nosferatu, his Gothic remake of the 1922 classic, is leading the box office with $156 million so far. A few days ago, cinephiles got word that he's staying in the Universal monster motif with Werwulf coming next. (No relation with the foible-ridden "Dark Universe.")
Now comes the announcement that the cerebral moviemaker is going to make a sequel to the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. The film starred the wit and whimsy of Jim Henson, who created a compelling story and fascinating puppets for a fantasy world featuring Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie.
Eggers signed on to direct and co-write with his creative partner Sjón, with whom he collaborated on The Northman. Variety reported Chris and Eleanor Columbus are slated to produce the film with Lisa Henson. Also along for the ride is Jim's son, Brian Henson, who will be executive producing.

Jeff Sneider recently reported that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers was set to helm a new Labyrinth movie, and while some were quick to dismiss the rumor, it's now been confirmed.
Back in 2020, we got word that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had signed on to helm a sequel to Jim Henson's fantasy classic for Sony-owned studio TriStar Pictures. Updates have pretty much been non-existent since, and we had heard that another filmmaker was being sought for the project - we just didn't expect it to be Eggers!
According to Deadline, Eggers is also set to write the project with frequent collaborator Sjón for TriStar. Producers will include Lisa Henson, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus, while Brian Henson will executive produce.

Robert Eggers will tackle the long awaited Labyrinth 2, and it’s now been announced. A bit more information here.
It’s been an exciting week for Robert Eggers. His remake of Nosferatu has been hugely successful, and it was recently confirmed that his next film will be Werwulf, due out at the end of 2026. Even got through the spell checker, that.
But there’s more! According to Deadline, the filmmaker has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for TriStar Pictures.
The original Labyrinth is a much loved cult classic from 1986. It saw the great Jim Henson direct from a screenplay by Monty Python member Terry Jones.
The story follows sixteen year old Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, who must navigate a treacherous maze in order to save her baby brother from The Goblin King, Jareth, played by David Bowie. Throughout her journey, Sarah encounters...

Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! Robert Eggers is getting very busy. A day after setting up his next film, “Werwulf,” at Focus Features, the director of “Nosferatu” and “The Northman” has closed a deal with TriStar Pictures to direct a sequel to “Labyrinth.”
Released in 1986, “Labyrinth” starred Jennifer Connolly as a teen who, frustrated with taking care of her infant half-brother, wishes for him to be taken away by the goblins in a fantasy book she is reading. Her rash wish is granted by the Goblin King Jareth, played by David Bowie, who gives her 13 hours to find her brother in a magical labyrinth before he is turned into a goblin forever.
Initially a box office dud with $34 million grossed against a $25 million budget, “Labyrinth” became a cult classic thanks to Bowie’s performance and the intricate puppet creatures created by director Jim Henson and his team. Details on the sequel’s plot are being kept under wraps.

Eggers is writing the project with his writing partner Sjón, while Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus are producing alongside Lisa Henson. Brian Henson is executive producing.
The sequel originally had Scott Derrickson set to direct. When asked about the status of the project for TriStar Pictures and Jim Henson Pictures in 2023, Derrickson admitted it was “a tough nut to crack” and apparently exited after that. Robert Eggers' Nosferatu proved to be a huge success for Focus Features, and the acclaimed filmmaker is staying with the studio - and firmly in the horror genre - for his next project.
THR reports that Eggers is set to helm Werwulf, which he also co-wrote with fellow The Northman scribe Sjón.
Just in case the title didn't give it away, this will be a werewolf movie. Plot details are few and far between, but THR notes that the story will be set in 13th century England. It remains to be seen if the werewolf will be rocking a moustache.
Apparently, Eggers was initially planning to shoot the film in black and white, before deciding against it.

After tackling vampires with Nosferatu, filmmaker Robert Eggers is taking on another horror creature genre in his own inimitable style.
Eggers has co-written Werwulf, a werewolf horror project that he will direct as his next feature.
Focus Features, Universal’s art house division which released and financed Nosferatu, is back in business with the filmmaker for Werwulf. The company has dated the thriller for a North America release on Christmas Day, 2026. The parties are hoping for more holiday greetings as Nosferatu was also released on Christmas Day and went on to become an improbable hit.
Eggers wrote Werwulf with Sjón, who co-wrote heady Viking saga The Northman with the filmmaker. While details are scarce, sources say the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.

It's not uncommon for actors to have regrets, and for Hugh Grant, that applies to one film the veteran actor appeared in three decades ago. He's actually so unhappy with his performance in the movie that he says he cannot even allow his wife to see it.
In 1995, Grant starred in Nine Months. In the romcom, Grant plays a man whose longtime partner (Julianne Moore) becomes pregnant, despite her use of birth control, giving him about nine months to prepare for the unexpected addition. Grant has never been happy with his work in the movie, and in a recent interview with Variety, it was made clear he's still no fan. When the movie was brought up, Grant screamed "as if startled," the title alone making him uneasy. He clarified that it's just his own performance that he doesn't like, but be that as it may, he wouldn't be comfortable with letting his wife watch it.

Chris Columbus, the director of family favorites like “Home Alone,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and the first two “Harry Potter” movies, is an unlikely producer on one of 2024’s more talked about and grizzly horror films, Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu.”
In fact, Columbus has produced Eggers’ films dating back to “The Witch,” and he’s worked with Eggers to get “Nosferatu” to the screen for over a decade. He may direct a lot of family films, but he’s a film history buff (just check out Columbus’s picks from the TCM lineup) and still shares sensibilities with someone like Eggers.
In an interview with THR, Columbus explained how an unfortunate experience working on “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” influenced him to be a better producer when it came to working with other auteur filmmakers.

2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the musical fantasy film Labyrinth… and if all goes well, we might be able to celebrate the anniversary with a new film that’s set in the world of the original film. Such a project has been making its way through development hell for several years, and now Jeff Sneider of The InSneider has revealed that he has heard that The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu writer/director Robert Eggers has closed a deal to co-write and direct the new Labyrinth film!
This project first started moving forward in 2016, when Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel writer Nicole Perlman signed on to write the screenplay. Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus) was hired to direct the film in 2017, and he wrote his own draft of the script with Jay Basu. Robert Eggers Nosferatu from Focus Features sank its teeth into the Christmas box office. With James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown – Searchlight Pictures’ top-grossing film since it was acquired by Disney in 2019 – they ushered in a heady post-Covid moment for indie films at no. 3 and 5 at the domestic box office. Yes, both are labels of major studios but indie labels going for something different than Mufasa: The Lion King or Wicked.
The space for grownup films, for indie fare, had been steadily improving this fall and the latest numbers are the strongest indication yet that theatrical is back for a broader range of movies – and horror for Christmas.
A24’s Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman also grossed $4.39 million for the weekend for a cume of $7.2 million and a no. 7 spot.
Distributors have been saying for some time that a rising tide will lift all boats and with this holiday frame it finally may have happened.

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu opened to critical acclaim in theaters on Christmas day. The film received immense praise for its direction, cinematography, and performances. The remake of the 1922 classic was a passion project of Eggers and he began development on the project in 2015. Interestingly, there was a creative mind on set to help him with his vision for the film.

Harry Potter director Chris Columbus served as one of the producers of the film alongside his daughter Eleanor Columbus. Eggers shared that while Columbus didn’t try to take over his filmmaking style, the director served as a safety net. He would help the director realign his vision whenever it got a little too artsy.

Chris Columbus, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, was behind some of the most beloved and successful family films of all time. Among others, he wrote 1984’s Gremlins and 1985’s The Goonies, and he directed 1990’s Home Alone and 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York — both Christmas classics — as well as 1993’s Mrs. Doubtfire and 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Which makes it all the more surprising and interesting that now, at the age of 66, he has produced — with Eleanor Columbus, his daughter and partner in Maiden Voyage Productions, an incubator for young filmmakers — Robert Eggers’ terrifying new horror film Nosferatu, which stars Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård, and which Focus will release on Christmas Day.

The wait is nearly over, as Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is coming to theaters this Christmas. A perfect option for those who are looking for some gothic horror this holiday season, I'm excited for Daily Dead readers to see Eggers' new vision of the classic vampire tale for themselves. So much care was put into the film, from the performances to the meticulously crafted sets, practical effects, haunting score, and more. Everything came together so perfectly for this film, and having caught an early screening last month, I'm dying to revisit Nosferatu myself this week.
During a recent press day, I caught up with Robert Eggers, Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, and Emma Corrin to talk about their experiences making the film. From Robert Eggers' love of Nosferatu and watching it on VHS to inspirations for the look of Count Orlok, the on-set experiences, and more, take a look at my interviews below.

Focus Features upcoming Nosferatu remake has received its first official clip from the highly-anticipated gothic horror movie. This comes ahead of the films theatrical release next month on Dec. 25.
The video provides a closer look at Lily-Rose Depps character Ellen Hutter, as she cries for her so-called guardian angel to come to her and comfort her in her hour of need. However, it seems like she attracted the attention of a dark and sinister figure instead of an angel, teasing one of the films chilling sequences. The official synopsis for Nosferatu reads, Set in 19th century Germany, it is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.

When we turned around, everyone was dead. The stench of their bodies was horrible. Standing before me was death…but I’d never been so happy.”

The cast also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin as Anna Harding, Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, Simon McBurney as Knock, and Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz.
Focus Features’ description reads: “Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”
During an interview with Esquire, Skarsgård was asked whether audiences will see a “sexy vampire” in Nosferatu.

Robert Eggers is continuing his cult films of the occult.
The “Witch” and “The Northman” auteur takes on his long-gestating reimagining of “Nosferatu,” with Bill Skarsgård playing the titular vampire. “The Idol” breakout Lily-Rose Depp stars as Ellen Hutter, a woman whose soul is seduced by Count Orlok (Skarsgård) while her husband Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) fights to save her.
Eggers writes and directs the remake of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film, which was later adapted by Werner Herzog in 1979. The official description for Eggers’ “Nosferatu” reads: “Robert Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’ is a Gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Eggers’ longtime “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman” collaborator Willem Dafoe also star.
