When it comes to the box office, the action genre can be fickle (unless you are Tom Cruise) with big names not always bringing the guaranteed payday. It happens to the best and beefiest of the genre, but when two fan favorites come together, success is almost expected. Both Jet Li and Jason Statham have amassed impressive careers, kicking a** and taking names for decades, with the 2000s being particularly kind to both actors.
2007's War should have been a success, but it did not manage to win over critics and underperformed at the box office. Almost two decades after its release, we will look back and see why the action flick fell so flat and whether it is worth revisiting with fresh eyes.

Alternative subculture enthusiasts rejoice — industrial music legends Nine Inch Nails and the iconic alt fashion brand, Dr. Martens, have teamed up for a new line of special edition shoes.
Inspired by Nin’s seminal 1994 album, The Downward Spiral, the shoes incorporate elements of the record’s artwork with several striking black-and-white models that embody the brand’s signature style. Check out photos of the four new styles below.
“This collaboration just makes so much sense,” the band’s creative director, John Crawford, said. “Not just because of the countless fans I’ve seen wearing Dr. Martens at Nin concerts over the years (myself included), but because Nin and Dr. Martens are both known for rejecting convention and expectation in favor of innovation, with their distinctive ability to transcend genres and styles in a way that is unique to each person who experiences them.”

In the "Star Trek" episode "The Galileo Seven", Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Lieutenant Commander Scott (James Doohan), and three specialists are assigned to take Enterprise's shuttlecraft, the Galileo, on a special survey to map the Murasaki-312 quasar. A mysterious spatial phenomenon pulls the shuttle off course, however, and it crash lands on a nearby world inhabited by vicious 10-foot-tall cavemen.
The seven people on board the Galileo have to repair their ship and find a way to contact the Enterprise through the signal-scrambling mists of the quasar. Their job is made more difficult by the attacking cavemen, who want to murder them with spears. The collected and logical Spock attempts to scare off the brutes, while his more emotional, human counterparts encourage deadly force. When two of the Galileo Seven are killed, Spock discourages a memorial service. The episode is ultimately about how Spock's logic isn't always...

Surprise! The big twist in "War" reveals Rogue and Lone are the same person, leading to a deadly showdown. "War" ends with a shocking final fight where Lone fatally shoots Crawford after refusing forgiveness. Despite being criticized, "War" is part of Time Out's Best 100 Action Movies list - worth a second look.
Featuring the second cinematic showdown between popular action stars Jason Statham and Jet Li, War is a fun if forgettable action crime-thriller released in 2007. Statham stars as John Crawford, a corrupt FBI Agent tasked with tracking down a shadowy assassin called Rogue (Li) after killing his partner Tom Lone (played by Li and Terry Chen). Although the film was bashed by critics (13% on Rotten Tomatoes), the visceral stunt work and jarring fight scenes stand out thanks to the expert choreography by Hong Kong filmmaker Corey Yuen.

Jason Statham's early roles were action-light before he established himself as a leading player in the genre in hit film The Transporter. Statham's career includes morally ambiguous characters, and key roles that are unequivocally villainous, such as Mr. B in Turn It Up. Ethan Greer in Cellular and Deckard Shaw in Furious 7 showcase Statham's range as an actor, with Greer ranking as one of his best villains.
Primarily recognized as an archetypal Hollywood action hero, Jason Statham isn't known for his villain roles yet over the years, the genre superstar has occasionally turned to the dark side. Many of Statham's most well-known characters toe the line between good and evil, often causing incredible destruction even if it's ultimately for a good cause. However, even in a career full of morally ambiguous characters, it's possible to identify some key roles that are unequivocally villainous.

Cindy Crawford is reflecting on that 1986 Oprah Winfrey interview.
Crawford appeared on Apple TV+’s “The Super Models” alongside Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.

In the summer of 2014, America looked on in horror as high-profile killings of Black men made headlines - Eric Garner, Michael Brown, John Crawford III. And then, on Nov. 22, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot and killed by a white police officer in Cleveland, Ohio. Tamir, the youngest of four siblings, had been playing with a toy gun across the street from his home.
Samaria Rice, Tamir's mother, will never be able to forget that day and all that came after - a justice system that didn't hold anyone to account for her son's killing, the post-traumatic stress disorder that she says she and her other three children deal with on a daily basis. Now the founder and CEO of the Tamir Rice Foundation, which serves children through arts and culture after-school programming, Samaria works to better her community. A behind-the-scenes feature with Mads Mikkelsen reveals why the outstanding fight scene in Hannibal season 2’s first episode was so special. Hannibal aired for three seasons on NBC from 2013 to 2015, and its passionate fans are still hungry for Hannibal season 4. After all, the Bryan Fuller-created series raised the bar for both network and prestige TV in every conceivable way, and even the occasional fight scenes seen on Hannibal yielded upper echelon results.
Hannibal season 2, episode 1, “Kaiseke,” featured a brutal showdown between Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) in Hannibal’s kitchen. It’s by far Hannibal’s best fight scene, and Mads Mikkelsen credited the two actors’ pasts by simply saying, “We felt young again.” While the fisticuffs between Hannibal and Jack turned out great in fitting Hannibal fashion, it would have also been more catastrophic than usual if the fight scene was bad or merely average.

Mads Mikkelsen's fairly unknown origins made his casting as the titular psychiatrist-turned-cannibal in Hannibal perfect. The Danish actor played the role in all three of the NBC show's seasons. Co-starring alongside him were Hugh Dancy as criminal profiler Will Graham and Laurence Fishburne as Bsu Agent-in-Charge Jack Crawford.
While Mads Mikkelsen was neither a cannibal nor a psychiatrist in his youth, he was, in fact, a gymnast and professional dancer. Mikkelsen trained as a gymnast as a child, with the intention of becoming a professional athlete, before studying ballet at the Balettakademien in Sweden. He spent almost a decade as a dancer before moving on to study drama at the Århus Theatre School in 1996 and making his screen debut in Nicolas Winding Refn's directorial debut Pusher that same year. Mikkelsen's background in gymnastics and ballet gives his version (over Anthony Hopkins') of Hannibal Lecter a certain physicality. He...

The word “visionary” gets tossed around pretty easily in show business, too often applied to creators who appealed to a broad market more than they broke new ground. But few would disagree that the word is an apt descriptor for Bryan Fuller. Not only did Fuller work on cult hits like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Heroes, but he also created some beloved oddballs, including the sweetly macabre Pushing Daisies and Hannibal, the audacious adaptation of Thomas Harris’s novels. Despite the idiosyncratic nature of his work, Fuller has established himself as a consummate collaborator, as demonstrated by his tendency to work with actors such as Lee Pace and Caroline Dhavernas across several projects.
But with the casting news about Fuller’s upcoming feature film directing debut Dust Bunny, the creator will finally be reuniting with his best collaborator, the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. Together with Fuller, Mikkelsen already did the impossible,...

At the 64th Academy Awards, it was all about "The Silence of the Lambs." The host, Billy Crystal, was wheeled onto the stage wearing Hannibal Lecter's famous muzzle, and by the end of the evening the film had swept the "Big Five" Oscars: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay, becoming only the third film in the Academy's history to do so (after "It Happened One Night" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.")
It was a cannibal love-in, alright; in the building at least, because outside in the street several hundred protestors gathered to angrily decry the portrayal of gay characters in a number of the year's films, most notably "The Silence of the Lambs" for its transgender serial killer Buffalo Bill (via Advocate). Whether the film is transphobic or not remains a subject of debate today but that doesn't detract from the quality of Ted Levine's performance as Bill,...

After a premature ending, Hannibal season 4 is looking more like a possibility now. One fan speculates on what it might be...
That Hannibal survived as long as it did is a minor miracle. A baroque opera of a TV show packed with elaborate plot twists, psychological games, gore elevated to the level of art and pitch-black humour, Hannibal never should have been on network television. Perhaps its greatest tragedy is that NBC picked it up without truly knowing what they were going to get; a crime procedural based on an iconic property must have seemed a no brainer. Of course that was not accounting for the ways in which creator Bryan Fuller managed to take well-trodden material to stunning new heights, subverting the text while paying loving tribute to it and all the while forging a path all its own. Arthur Penn’s detective movie is one of the best ever in the genre, one that rewards repeat viewings particularly well. Gumshoe Harry Moseby compartmentalizes his marriage, his job, his past and the greedy Hollywood has-beens he meets, not realizing that everything is interconnected, and fully capable of assembling a world-class conspiracy. Gene Hackman tops a sterling cast in the film that introduced most of us to Melanie Griffith.

Cynicism isn’t hard to come by in the horror genre; any Italian cannibal or home invasion flick will satiate your desire for an outlook on man’s worst transgressions. Conversely, it’s even harder to find a film with such a buoyant feel that is at odds with the terror on display. Well, folks, may I present to you The Boogens (1981), an endearing charmer of a subterranean monster movie. By the time it’s over, you may want to give it a big old hug.
Released by Jensen Farley Pictures in September (with Paramount buying up the TV rights) on a budget of $600,000 Us, The Boogens did nothing to impress critics. However, a certain Stephen King loved the hell out of it, and his praise would grace the advertising as it did with his accolades of The Evil Dead (1981). (A King blurb held a lot of truck in those days.

"This land is mine, God made this land for me." Those are just song lyrics, while Otto Preminger's politically daring 70mm mega-production is a lot more subtle in its presentation of the 'Palestinian problem' that led to the formation of the State of Israel. Welcome to the weird, irresistible world of Republic Serials, an art form with rules of content and conduct that have no resemblance to other movies, or any reality we know. "The Phantom Ruler" has plans for world conquest, so get ready for a punch-out every five minutes and a terrific Lydecker miniature special effect in almost every episode. Patricia Neal ca. 1950. Patricia Neal movies: 'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' 'A Face in the Crowd' Back in 1949, few would have predicted that Gary Cooper's leading lady in King Vidor's The Fountainhead would go on to win a Best Actress Academy Award 15 years later. Patricia Neal was one of those performers – e.g., Jean Arthur, Anne Bancroft – whose film career didn't start out all that well, but who, by way of Broadway, managed to both revive and magnify their Hollywood stardom. As part of its “Summer Under the Stars” series, Turner Classic Movies is dedicating Sunday, Aug. 16, '15, to Patricia Neal. This evening, TCM is showing three of her best-known films, in addition to one TCM premiere and an unusual latter-day entry. 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' Robert Wise was hardly a genre director. A former editor (Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons...

Clint Eastwood revisited Harry Callahan three more times, usually whenever his career was in the dumps. If Dirty Harry was a cultural phenomenon and Magnum Force a respectable follow-up, the rest are uninspired cash-ins. The main law Harry enforces in these sequels is the Law of Diminishing Returns.
Given Dirty Harry‘s San Francisco setting, something like The Enforcer (1976) was inevitable. After all, San Fran hosted Haight-Ashbury, hippie capital of the world; was a favored site for Black Panther and Sds protests; headquarters of the nascent gay rights movement; victim of Weathermen bombings and the racially-charged Zebra murders. Writers Gail Morgan Hickman and S.W. Schurr based their script, originally titled “Moving Target,” on the Symbionese Liberation Army which kidnapped Patty Hearst. Dean Riesner (who cowrote the original Harry) and Stirling Silliphant (In the Heat of the Night) polished the film.

The final image of Arthur Penn’s “Night Moves” certainly gets the movie pundits in a lather. The scene consists of Gene Hackman as private eye Harry Moseby, shot to pieces but still trying to steer his motor boat to shore. Bleeding badly from his wounds, he’s unable to reach the gears; he ends up setting the boat in a circling motion. From above, we see Harry’s boat circling aimlessly in the Gulf Stream. This scene, which brings the film to a finish, has been described as a metaphor for many things, including America’s lost identity after the Watergate era, to Moseby’s own fruitless search for the truth, to Penn’s own floundering career. To me, it always looks like the boat is going down a drain (or a toilet). It’s the sort of ending that leaves a viewer wondering if you’ve missed something,...

Charlton Heston movies: ‘A Man for All Seasons’ remake, ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (photo: Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur) (See previous post: “Charlton Heston: Moses Minus Staff Plus Chariot Equals Ben-Hur.”) I’ve yet to watch Irving Rapper’s melo Bad for Each Other (1954), co-starring the sultry Lizabeth Scott — always a good enough reason to check out any movie, regardless of plot or leading man. A major curiosity is the 1988 made-for-tv version of A Man for All Seasons, with Charlton Heston in the Oscar-winning Paul Scofield role (Sir Thomas More) and on Fred Zinnemann’s director’s chair. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays Thomas More’s wife in the TV movie (Wendy Hiller in the original) had a cameo as Anne Boleyn in the 1966 film. According to the IMDb, Robert Bolt, who wrote the Oscar-winning 1966 movie (and the original play), is credited for the 1988 version’s screenplay as well. Also of note,...

★★★★☆ Hell is a City (1960) is somewhat of a novelty - a Hammer production which isn't a horror film and features none of the studio's regulars in major roles. Developed from Maurice Procter's novel by legendary director Val Guest, the film stars 1960s household names Stanley Baker, Donald Pleasance and Billie Whitelaw. Inspector Harry Martineau (Baker) is a hardened Manchester cop who has seen and done it all. Little worries him anymore except when he hears that his old adversary, career criminal Don Starling (John Crawford) - who Martineau was responsible for getting put away - is out of prison and back in town.

As we watch The Silence of the Lambs, we fondly remember a distant time when Hollywood was less pusillanimous with its films. If you watch this thriller, you'll watch it for the connection between Hannibal and Clarice. After all, this connection couldn't have been played in a better way.
In the Midwest, a mysterious killer named Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) skins women and the FBI is after him. In order to catch Buffalo Bill, Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn), the head of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, assigns a task to Clarice Sterling (Jodie Foster), a young FBI trainee. Her job is to interrogate Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a cannibalistic serial killer who was once a respected psychiatrist.
Besides, Lecter is so feared that instead of being behind bars, he's imprisoned at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane behind thick glass panels and windowless stonewalls. Through Clarice's interrogation, the...

In a role that might finally give Robert De Niro a chance to summon his inner Raging Bull, the actor has signed on to play Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi. Lombardi will be written by Eric Roth, who wrote the De Niro-directed The Good Shepherd. De Niro and his Tribeca Productions partner Jane Rosenthal will produce alongside Espn Films, the National Football League and Andell Entertainment. It's De Niro's 2nd intriguing deal in the past few days, after Tribeca came on to produce a Midnight Run sequel that will allow De Niro to reprise as Jack Crawford, the [...]...

A reviewer tried to give this set a bad review. His liver was eaten with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. Slurp. Actually, the set features a fine special edition of Silence of the Lambs and the only way (so far) that you.ll get Manhunter and Hannibal in high definition. Manhunter (1986, 4 stars): A serial killer called the Tooth Fairy (Tom Noonan) is murdering entire families. FBI supervisor Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina) calls ex-agent Will Graham (William Petersen) out of retirement to help catch the Tooth Fairy. Graham was nearly killed catching the cannibalistic Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox) and retired because of the trauma. Now he has to go back to work and stop the...
