Elle Fanning’s Awful Hair In ‘3 Generations’ Is Why Cisgender Actors Shouldn’t Play Trans Characters
The Weinstein Company, and Harvey Weinstein in particular, is notorious for using unconventional tactics to promote its films; he flew Daniel Day-Lewis to D.C. to support the Americans with Disabilities Act during the Oscar campaign for “My Left Foot,” and paraded Martin Scorsese around at a Women In Film luncheon to prove “Gangs of New York” wasn’t too violent.
While “3 Generations” likely won’t be earning Oscar noms, Weinstein did score (orchestrate?) a flurry of good press when the MPAA gave the transgender drama an R rating, citing language and sexual references in its decision. GLAAD sent the MPAA an angry letter; Naomi Watts gave an impassioned statement about the “beautiful and touching story,” and the MPAA changed the rating to PG-13. And for one brief and shining moment, nobody talked about how awful the movie was. (Current Rotten Tomatoes: 35%.)

How do you screw this up? You've got three leading actresses – Susan Sarandon, Naomi Watts and Elle Fanning – who are usually worth watching in anything. But 3 Generations is pushing it. Even nurturing talent can't breathe life into a script that is completely D.O.A.
In fact, the movie has been lying dormant on a Weinstein Company shelf since it debuted at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival, under the title About Ray. Clearly, director and co-writer Gaby Dellal's film has been much fiddled with in the interim – and not for the good.

The Weinstein Company and the Motion Picture Association of America have agreed to give the transgender coming of age drama “3 Generations” a PG-13 rating for “mature thematic content, some sexual references and language.” The MPAA previously slapped an R-rating onto the film starring Elle Fanning, Susan Sarandon and Naomi Watts, due to language including sexual references, but the Weinstein Company challenged the rating. In a letter to the Motion Picture Association of America, GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis urged MPAA to reverse its decision to give the transgender coming of age drama “3 Generations” an R-rating. The rating, said Ellis, “sends a dangerous message to this already marginalized community.” Directed by Gaby Dellal and distributed by The Weinstein Company, “3 Generations” stars Elle Fanning as a transgender teenage boy named Ray. Naomi Watts plays her mother, and Susan Sarandon plays her grandmother, who is a lesbian. The MPAA rated the film “R” due to language, including sexual references, which The Weinstein Company plans to challenge.

The long-delayed, controversial drama 3 Generations (once titled About Ray) from writer-director Gaby Dellal will finally arrive this summer, and now The Weinstein Company has released a new trailer. The story follows Ray (Elle Fanning), who begins to transition from female to male, while also dealing with familial strife and coming-of-age. Her mother (Naomi Watts) is going through her own transition from living in an apartment attached to her mother’s (Susan Surandon) and Ray’s father, who is less-than-thrilled about Ray’s life trajectory.
Shot back in 2014 and now finally seeing a release, back at Tiff in 2015, we said in our review, “I expected an everyone-supports-Ray fluff piece and was therefore pleasantly surprised Dellal and cowriter Nikole Beckwith instead delivered an authentic familial drama that’s universal no matter its wild relationship machinations.” While the marketing thus far sells a fairly conventional, sugar-coated drama, we’ll have to see if...

"Why is 'normal' the goal, why not authentic?" "Authentic is what he wants to be." The Weinstein Company has launched a trailer for an indie film titled 3 Generations, telling an intimate and personal story of three different generations of a family in New York City. The film is centered around Elle Fanning playing Ray, who realizes she's actually a boy and attempts to begin the transition but needs the support of her family. Her single mother and lesbian grandmother are part of the story, helping her in their own ways. Naomi Watts also stars, along with Susan Sarandon, Linda Emond, and Tate Donovan. This first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival back in 2015 under the title About Ray, and has been held for release ever since, now with a brand new title. The way this trailer is cut makes me wonder if it's not as good as it seems. Here's...

Leo Tolstoy nailed the universal truth about family on its head in the opening sentence of Anna Karenina — “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Family, in whatever shape or size, is always complicated, messy and crazy — but we wouldn’t trade our own for any other in the world (most of the time).

The MPAA gave ‘3 Generations’ an R-rating and The Weinstein Company isn’t having it.3 Generations
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) decided that the Weinstein Company’s film 3 Generations deserves an R-rating. The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today plans to challenge the Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) decision to assign an “R” rating to its forthcoming film 3 Generations. The film, which stars Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, and Susan Sarandon, provides an authentic and sensitive portrayal of what it means to be a transgender youth in today’s society and the enormous impact familial support can have as one transitions. 3 Generations has been rated “R” by the MPAA, citing language including some sexual references behind the decision.
TWC has enlisted the help of top Hollywood lawyer David Boies to advise on their dissent. Largely known for his pivotal role to overturn Proposition 8, California’s discriminatory ban on gay marriage, back in 2009, Boies has consulted on numerous human rights issues for TWC including censorship of the Academy Award® nominated film Carol, as well as a previous protest of the MPAA’s rating of the documentary Bully.

The Weinstein Company has announced its plan to protest the R rating received by “3 Generations,” co-writer/director Gaby Dellal’s film about a transgender teenager played by Elle Fanning. Formerly known as “About Ray,” the film co-stars Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon.

The MPAA cites language, including sexual references, in its decision. TWC has once again enlisted attorney David Boies to aid their legal battle, as they did when “Bully” likewise received a controversial R rating; the company successfully brought the anti-bullying documentary’s rating down to a PG-13 in that case.

The Weinstein company plans to challenge the Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) R-rating for the transgender family drama “3 Generations,” the studio announced Thursday. The film, directed by Gaby Dellal, stars Elle Fanning as a young woman transitioning to male. Naomi Watts plays her mother, and Susan Sarandon plays her grandmother, who is a lesbian. The film was previously titled “About Ray.” The MPAA rated the film “R” due to language including sexual references. The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today plans to challenge the Motion Picture Association of America's (MPAA) decision to assign an "R" rating to its forthcoming film 3 Generations. The film, which stars Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, and Susan Sarandon, provides an authentic and sensitive portrayal of what it means to be a transgender youth in today's society and the enormous impact familial support can have as one transitions. 3 Generations has been rated "R" by the MPAA, citing language including some sexual references behind the decision.
TWC has enlisted the help of top Hollywood lawyer David Boies to advise on their dissent. Largely known for his pivotal role to overturn Proposition 8, California's discriminatory ban on gay marriage, back in 2009, Boies has consulted on numerous human rights issues for TWC including censorship of the Academy Award nominated film Carol, as well as a previous protest of the MPAA's rating of the documentary Bully.

May 2015 was the last time Harvey Weinstein hosted a Cannes presentation at the Majestic Hotel. Among the titles was a preview of Justin Chadwick’s “Tulip Fever,” with the then white-hot Swedish actress Alicia Vikander on hand. A romantic triangle period piece costarring Christoph Waltz and Dane DeHaan, Weinstein later pushed the release from July 2016 to February 2017. Now, two years later, it’s booked for August 25 — the dog days of summer.
Last year, the Weinstein Co. had so few bonafide Oscar contenders on the docket that they didn’t mount their usual Cannes show-and-tell at all. Garth Davis’s “Lion” did yield six nominations and, like critics’ darling “Carol” the year before, no wins. The lengthy awards season did pay off for “Lion” at the box office; it’s made $103 million worldwide. However, it also represents a rare tick in the ‘win’ column for TWC, which is struggling to maneuver in these challenging times.

Following a remarkable year in cinematic transgender representation with films like Sean Baker’s Tangerine, Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, and Gaby Dellal’s About Ray, not to mention prolific public figures such as Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox maintaining notable visibility, positive depictions of the transgender community have marked 2015 as a watershed year. But not unlike the first wave queer theory which bitterly criticized historically negative depictions of Lgbt characters prior to the early 90s New Queer Cinema movement, Trans representation is under increased scrutiny, which results in severe cultural policing. One of the reasons we fail to see queer characters utilized in contemporary genre film is due to an exploitative history we’ve been unable to divorce ourselves from, those unseemly memories of demeaning cinematic representation. One of the functions of the Toronto Film Festival, with its magic mix of audiences, media and industry, is that distributors can test the waters and see how strong their product is. And they can gauge the competition for the last quarter of 2015. When there are two films on similar subjects, the stronger picture gains momentum at the expense of the other. Thus in the face of Focus Features' "The Danish Girl," with positive reviews for actors Alicia Vikander and Eddie Redmayne, the Weinstein Co. at the last minute pulled its transgender drama, Gaby Dellal's "About Ray," starring Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, from theaters. It was set to open Friday, but after a lackluster reception in Toronto, will wait until 2016. Will the movie get a qualifying release at year's end, a less expensive way to go? Perhaps. Meanwhile Paramount harbors Oscar hopes for its surprise pick-up,...

I hate to be the guy to judge a book by its cover, but I admittedly did just that with Gaby Dellal‘s About Ray. It depicts the “unconventional” family of three generations with Susan Sarandon‘s Dodo, Naomi Watts as her daughter Maggie, and Elle Fanning‘s transitioning grandson/son respectfully named Ray (formerly Ramona). The artwork is mediocrely mainstream with smiling faces projecting this difficult period in their lives as though a cakewalk the experience never could prove under any circumstances. I expected an everyone-supports-Ray fluff piece and was therefore pleasantly surprised Dellal and cowriter Nikole Beckwith instead delivered an authentic familial drama that’s universal no matter its wild relationship machinations.
Audiences may struggle with this last point because this family is flypaper for the “unorthodox.” It’s almost as though the filmmakers decided to throw the kitchen sink against the camera so nothing could be singled out as unpalatable or unimportant.

Elle Fanning stars as Ray, a teenager transition from female to male in the family drama About Ray, in theatres on Friday.
The film, which held its premiere at Tiff last weekend brings a multi-generational female ensemble together in the touching drama about what it means to be true to yourself. After Ray (Fanning) decides to begin therapy to start his transition into a male, Ray’s mother Maggie (Naomi Watts), must come to terms with the decision while tracking down Ray’s biological father for his legal consent. Supported by her mother Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Maggie finds herself in transition between past and future for her family.
Cineplex sat down with director Gaby Dellal, and stars Naomi Watts, Elle Fanning, and Susan Sarandon about families and authenticity in About Ray.

Tom Hooper's "The Danish Girl" may the most Oscar-baity Oscar-bait ever to bait the Oscar. Then again, it might also be good. It's certainly a captivating story, the true-life tale of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, and director Tom Hooper's got himself a hell of a cast with Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander playing the couple who found themselves grappling with a relationship that helped break new ground for people around the world who felt that they were born wearing the wrong skin. Lili Elbe was a transgender pioneer, and I'll be curious to see if this film faces any of the same blowback that "About Ray" has been facing because they cast cisgender actor Elle Fanning to play a character who is beginning the transition from male to female. Director Gaby Dellal has defended that choice, but there are plenty in the Lbgt community who feel that the casting is a problem.

Just as there seems to be a greater societal acceptance of non-heterosexuality after Caitlyn Jenner’s came out as a trans woman and the Supreme Court decided to legalize gay marriage, Hollywood is having watershed Lgbt moment from the looks of several potential Oscar contenders this year. Consider that two highly different transgender movies and a fictionalized account of a landmark event in the gay rights movement will take their bows at fall film festivals. After the initial slate for the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival was announced last month there were many observers, including this pundit, who wondered of the annual September event had once again lost the battle of premieres to its Fall festival cousins. While debuting Ridley Scott's "The Martian," Jean Marc Valle's "Demolition" and Michael Moore's "Where Do We Invade Next" is nothing to sneeze at the fact some of the most anticipated films of the year are heading to Venice and Telluride first has to be a bit disheartening. Today Tiff announced that David Gordon Green's "Our Brand Is Crisis" with Sandra Bullock, Marc Abraham's "I Saw The Light" with Tom Hiddleston, Catherine Hardwicke's "Miss You Already...
