Sometimes it's difficult to get into movies that tap into real-life circumstances, because real life can be so much stranger than fiction. This year we went through one of the most contentious elections in history with Donald Trump proving victorious over Vice President Kamala Harris to become President of the United States once again. It was all very divisive and sparked a lot of controversy, so what better way to escape that with 2016's The Purge: Election Year? The 2016 horror film, much like the entire franchise, does touch on current events in a pretty unique way, with the third installment probably doing it the most. This makes it the perfect time to dive in again, and thankfully, streaming will make it that much easier to do so!

The Godfather Part III, the final chapter in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Godfather trilogy, was given a wide theatrical release on December 25, 1990 – and as far as director Luca Guadagnino is concerned, that release date was the perfect choice for the film, as it happens to be his go-to choice for Christmas viewing.
When IndieWire asked Guadagnino what he likes to watch over the holidays, he replied, “[The Godfather Part III] is the best of the three for me. Part II is too perfect and The Godfather is too legendary. But Part III has the ambition of a man who did everything and the fragility of the man who is going toward this older part of his work and his life. And it’s full of this longing melancholy. Danger and death are surrounding Frank Grillo. On screen that is. Either way, The Purge franchise actor has a lot to say about it. He enters James Gunn’s new Dcu, lending his voice as Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos (debuting on Max in December), then in Peacemaker Season 2 and again in the highly anticipated Superman reboot, which drops next summer. The ever-busy actor also headlines Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves, a trippy horror romp he calls “quite a journey,” about a supermoon event that sparks a mutation that turns people into werewolves. Ironically, he once pitched it as "The Purge meets werewolves." And he still gets asked about being in The Purge 6, to which he has a candid reply:
They talk about The Purge 6. I don't know if I'll be part of it, but I mean, it'd be crazy not to have me, I think.
True. The Tulsa King actor played Sgt.

The Purge 6 may no longer star Frank Grillo. The actor, who has appeared in two Purge movies as Leo Barnes, has expressed doubt over his return to the popular horror franchise.
Speaking with Screen Rant to promote his latest movie Werewolves, Grillo provided an uncertain update on his involvement in The Purge 6. "I heard they are working on it. I don't know if I'll be in it. I don't know. I know they've had some conversations. We'll see what happens," he said. "I might not be available, I might be doing Werewolves 2 and 3," he added, suggesting that he hopes the action thriller movie will spawn a new franchise for him to star in.

Frank Grillo is back in the horror genre with a twist on a classic monster in Werewolves. First having gotten in the works under the title Year 2, the movie is set in a world in which, a year prior, a supermoon turned millions into the titular creatures, with the impending return of the lunar event seeing society attempting to prepare for the potential of another major outbreak. Alongside Grillo, the ensemble Werewolves cast includes NCIS' Katrina Law, Godfather of Harlem's Ilfenesh Hadera, James Michael Cummings and Golden Globe nominee Lou Diamond Phillips.
A little over two years after filming first began on the film, Briarcliff Entertainment has released the first Werewolves trailer. The video opens up by setting up the movie's world of supermoon-turned-humans, with a woman finding her home has been broken into by the titular creatures. It then cuts to introducing Grillo's Wesley Marshall, who is shown preparing...

The Purge is one of the most popular horror franchises, starting with the 2013 original film directed by James DeMonaco. The film was a commercial success and spawned an expansive franchise that currently comprises five feature films. Star Trek's inspiration really is pretty revolutionary, eh? Even after 58 years of stories, Star Trek still finds a way to inspire all sorts of things. Recently, the concept of the film series "The Purge" came back into the social zeitgeist due to some rather unfortunate reasons. While we're not going to dive into the deeper aspects as the "why" it's recently trending, what we will point out is that The Purge isn't an original idea.
Not truly. Someone recently pointed out on Twitter that The Purge is nothing more than a follow-up idea to the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, The Return of the Archons. In the episode, the crew arrives on the planet Beta III, just ahead of their annual Festival.
During the Festival, the denizens of Beta III were to engage in violent or debaucherous activities for 12 hours, and not doing so would be a problem.

October is coming. That means the spooky season is upon us. But rather than watching the scary classics, this apocalyptic horror will be making its way to Hulu once the month begins. The Purge, directed by James DeMonaco and produced by Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, is a 2013 horror film with a slight tinge of dystopian and apocalypse. As of writing, this horror feature isn't available on any other streaming platform, so this October is the perfect opportunity to stream this feature.

There's no shortage of horror movies for developers to pick from, and while some aren't as scary as others, there are some that don't even get the chance to scare players. Plenty of beloved horror franchises haven't received so much as a sequel in over 10 years, let alone a video game adaptation, even if they have the fanbase to support one.
Horror movies haven't always had the best video game adaptations. But games like Alien: Isolation and Dead by Daylight are both critical successes that prove there is a desire by players for good games based on horror movies. Horror fans and gamers alike crave a good scare, and there are plenty of movies that can give them one.

The crossover project had been languishing in development hell for literally decades and Cameron, the director of 1986's "Aliens," clearly didn't believe that bringing these two beloved franchises together was the right move. Whether or not he was correct remains a source of debate. Either way, Fox eventually got things together, releasing "Alien vs. Predator" in theaters in 2004. The Purge franchise set in an alternate America where, for one night a year, all crime is legal, and the country spends 12 hours in a frenzy of violence now spans five films and two seasons of television, with another movie to come. The Forever Purge, the franchise's most recent movie entry, contained sweeping vistas of El Paso engulfed in the apocalyptic flames devouring the entire country. But despite the expansiveness of its eventual vision, the franchise began simply as a low-budget home invasion horror movie set on Purge night: The Strangers with an added dose of social and political commentary. James DeMonaco, who conceived the idea, and wrote all five of the movies, has spoken of his influences, including a classic episode of Star Trek that includes similar themes, and the films of Michael Haneke. But, per multiple interviews, the original inspiration was a smaller, more personal moment, a near-miss...

James DeMonaco's 2013 dystopian horror film "The Purge" is a shabby affair, but possesses an intriguing premise: in the near future, the government has mandated that all crimes, including murder, are legal for a single night a year. The idea being that if everyone has a night to work out their darkest frustrations — to purge their evil — then they will be well-behaved the other 364 days out of the year. The wealthy tend to spend Purge Night locked away in their armored mansions, although in the first "Purge" movie, the bourgeois protagonists have their manse invaded regardless.
It wouldn't be until "The Purge: Anarchy" in 2014 that the political underpinnings of "The Purge" would become more explicit. That film takes place not in an opulent mansion, but among the impoverished, and how their small businesses — and very lives — are threatened by Purge Night. It seems the Purge was enacted as an explicit...

James DeMonaco's 2013 dystopian horror film "The Purge" tantalized audiences with an intriguing premise. In the near future, the world lives in blissful harmony and everyone gets along 364 days out of the year. On the 365th day, however, citizens in suburban areas enclose their houses behind impregnable security gates and hide from the outside world. On that night, all crimes are legal, including murder. The government has instigated a Purge Night, feeling that citizens will be generally peaceful throughout the year if they're granted a night to work out all of their bases impulses.

Moon Knight star Ethan Hawke and Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey starred in James DeMonaco’s 2013 dystopian horror film The Purge, a major box-office success despite its mixed reviews. The insane plot of the film was derived from a real-life event that the director himself has encountered.

In James DeMonaco's 2013 dystopian horror movie "The Purge," Ethan Hawke plays a wealthy seller of high-tech home security systems. He lives in a bourgeois neighborhood and all his rich neighbors have outfitted their homes with Hawke's wares. They plan on employing their security soon, as tonight is Purge Night. In the future of "The Purge," one night a year is designated to be law-free. American citizens are legally permitted to commit whatever wanton acts of assault, destruction, and murder they want, from sundown to sunrise. Having purged their hostility, the idea is that they'll go back to being upstanding citizens in the morning.
The premise is tantalizing, although the 2013 original takes place mostly inside the Hawke character's home, turning a fun idea into a pretty rote home invasion thriller. The film was made for a scant $3 million but would earn over $91 million, making it a runaway hit. To date,...

The WGA strike of 2023 has created a fortunate side effect. While writers demanded better pay from studios -- as well as a guarantee that they would not be replaced by clunky automated writing machines -- many films and TV shows halted production. Without writers, the Hollywood system ground slowly to a halt. When the strike was resolved, production began again, but it left a 148-day gap in most studios' production schedules. To fill the gaps, some studios have adopted an ingenious approach: merely re-release some of their biggest hits from years past, allowing audiences to see some of their favorite movies on the big screen again.

One of the most iconic science fiction action franchises is "Predator," which began with the eponymous movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. While "Predator" is regarded as an action classic, attempts to follow-up on its success have since had considerably more mixed results. Frank Grillo heaps praise on 'The Purge 6' script, calling it the final installment in the franchise. Grillo's character Leo Barnes will take a prominent role in the movie, set in a divided America. Creator James DeMonaco will direct 'The Purge 6,' and explore a broken, ideologically divided America.

Exclusive: While high-profile packages have been flourishing following the ends of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the spec market also looks to have some pop to it as sources tell Deadline that Netflix has landed the female-driven genre thriller Apex from scribe Jeremy Robbins. Ian Bryce and Chernin Entertainment will produce. Netflix declined comment.
The script is described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs and follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.
The sale comes at an interesting time in a post-strike landscape where studios see a need for new original stories to fill their development slates, and the spec and packaging markets have reaped the rewards. Prior to the WGA strike in May, the market was not as robust as reps cautioned their clients about how hard it is to sell a script with talent attached, let alone a spec on its own.

This post contains spoilers for "The Purge" franchise.
2013's "The Purge" introduced an intriguing premise: in a near-future dystopia, all crime is legal for 12 hours once a year, allowing people to indulge in their most violent instincts. Written and directed by James DeMonaco, "The Purge" takes the home-invasion route, where a wealthy family unit finds themselves cornered by a bloodthirsty group of murderers itching to commit crimes without any consequences. The overwhelming success enjoyed by the film contributed to the making of an expanding franchise, with later entries retaining this core concept while introducing new socio-political facets to enliven their narratives.
While it is perfectly acceptable to watch the "Purge" franchise by the order of release date, following this format introduces some chronological issues, as later entries serve as prequels or expand the universe with some ties to the film franchise. Although we will be focusing exclusively on the movies,...

The Purge movie timeline starts in the early 2010s and expands to depict a dystopian world where an annual night of lawlessness is embraced by the government. The New Founding Fathers of America took power in 2014 after a total economic collapse and implemented the Purge experiment to control the lower classes. Over the course of the timeline, resistance against the Nffa grows, and by the end, the Purge is repealed, only to be reinstated years later in a more divided and violent society.
The Purge movie timeline is almost as complicated as the horrific morals at its center. Based around the premise that all crime is legal for one night of the year across America, The Purge timeline is intriguing, as a US where annual purging is legal feels completely alien yet, at the same time, worryingly not far enough from reality. Writer/director/producer James DeMonaco has expanded the...

All of the best horror films are traditionally more than just "a horror film." George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" is a zombie movie, yes, but it's also a satire of consumerism and an exploration of how close the crumbling of societal norms is at any given moment. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a masterpiece of practical effects, but it is also a sci-fi body horror film examining themes of paranoia, identity, isolation, fear of the unknown, and masculine hierarchies in survival situations. Despite what naysayers may cry out these days, horror has always been political, but one franchise has consistently been a lot more "in your face" about it.
I'm talking of course, about "The Purge" movies. Created by James DeMonaco and introduced by Blumhouse in 2013 with "The Purge," the films take place in an almost "Twilight Zone" alternate reality of America, where the country enjoys...

Two Saturday Night Live legends, Pete Davidson and Eddie Murphy, are joining forces for The Pickup, an upcoming comedy directed by Tim Story. The project hails from Amazon MGM Studios, with plot details remaining a mystery. Smoke on the street says The Pickup is a heist comedy with a script by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows.
In addition to his directorial duties, Story produces through his The Story Company banner, with Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox, and Murphy and Charisse Hewitt-Webster via Eddie Murphy Productions. The Story Company’s Vicky Mara Story, Davis Entertainment’s Jeremy Stein, and Kevin Burrows, Ross Fanger, and Matt Mider executive produce.
When he’s not the subject of paparazzi fodder or changing dating partners like fresh pairs of underwear, Davidson appears in films like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Fast X, Dumb Money, and Good Burger 2. He recently completed his role for The Home.

"The Purge" and its four sequels represent perhaps the greatest Trojan horse in modern horror cinema.
It starts with that indelible high concept premise: a near-future America run by a totalitarian regime that has seemingly eliminated crime by allowing crimes to be legal for one night a year. Purge Night. A chance for interested folks to work out ... everything they need to work out. But the thinly veiled subtext of the first film — that the Purge exists to allow the wealthy, powerful, and often complacent to systemically wipe out the poor, the disenfranchised, and the non-white — becomes the literal text going forward. Casual horror fans lulled in by a thrilling elevator pitch found themselves watching the angriest, most progressive, and yes, most blatantly political movie franchise of the past decade-plus. Come for the scary masks, stay for the ... civics lesson? Naturally, some fans still insist these movies are just big...

Horror films like The Exorcist and A Nightmare on Elm Street have left an indelible mark on cinema by revolutionizing the genre and introducing iconic characters. Films like Hellraiser and Saw tapped into society's fears and anxieties, exploring themes of pain and human depravity with their visceral and intense storytelling. The Conjuring and Halloween redefined the slasher genre, revitalizing it with their expert direction, psychological terror, and compelling performances. They remain touchstones in horror history.
In the realm of horror movies, the inaugural installment of a franchise often serves as its litmus test, setting the tone for subsequent entries and some horror franchises have first movies that stand above the rest. From the chills of Elm Street to the demonic atmosphere of The Exorcist, these pioneering films have carved their places in theatrical history. They birthed a phenomenon and influenced generations of filmmakers, leaving an indelible mark on the genre.

“The Home” has found a home at Lionsgate, TheWrap has learned. The Santa Monica-based studio snapped up domestic distribution rights to the Miramax horror thriller. Pete Davidson headlines while James DeMonaco helmed the feature. The picture is about a former foster child who begins working in a retirement home. Spoiler: The elderly residents and their caretakers have some very diabolical secrets.
The former “Saturday Night Live” castmember previously co-starred in the A24 horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies.” However, this will presumably be a more straightforward (or straight-faced) shocker. Look for this one to get a theatrical release in the early part of 2024.
