Telugu cinema has always had action, romance, spy, thrillers, and more. However, a genre that has gone unrecognized and unnoticed is the superhero genre. As with many movies that go the underrated or unseen route, this 1967 movie went unseen. Though superhero movies are part of contemporary Indian cinema today, the Telugu film industry came close to that early in Bhakta Prahlada (1967).

The film, while not strictly a superhero movie per se, has a hero whose adventures and struggles replicate the very foundation of what contributes to contemporary superheroes being so legendary.

Bhakta Prahlada — A Mythological Superhero

Bhakta Prahlada is a 1967 Indian Hindu mythological Telugu-language film directed by Chitrapu Narayana Rao, with the screenplay written by D. V. Narasa Raju. S.V. Ranga Rao, Anjali Devi, and Roja Ramani starred in this movie, with the latter making her debut with this film.

New Delhi, June 22 (Ians) India on Thursday named a 54-member team for the Asian Athletics Championships, to be held in Bangkok from July 12 to 16, featuring star long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, Asian record holder shot putter Tajinder Pal Singh Toor and new decathlon champion Tejaswin Shankar in the national track and field contingent.

The team was picked by the selection committee of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

At Asian Athletics Championships, the focus will be on Toor, Sreeshankar and Tejaswin, who did very well at the recently concluded Inter-State Athletic Championships 2023 in Bhubaneswar.

On the other hand, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and Commonwealth Games silver medallist 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable were not named in the team as the duo will continue to train abroad for the World Championships in Budapest in August.

As per AFI, the national camp will be organised in Patiala, Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram before the Asian Athletics Championships.

New Delhi, June 21 (Ians) The five-day Inter-State Athletic Championships 2023, which ended at Bhubaneswar on Monday, lived up to its expectations as on the final two days of the competition, shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and long jumper Murali Sreeshankar set the standard high with world-class performances.

Toor hogged all the limelight on the final day of the competition when he threw the shot put as far as 21.77 metres to improve his two-season-old Asian record of 21.49m. Needless to say a new national record, the effort was also good enough to breach the qualifying standard of the World Athletics Championships.

Sreeshankar’s 8.41m leap was no mean feat too as he came within 1cm of the national record with the holder Jeswin Aldrin himself competing in the tournament as the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) made it mandatory for all elite athletes to compete in Bhubaneswar to qualify for the Asian Games.

Bhubaneswar, June 16 (Ians) It was an eventful day here on Friday at the 62nd National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship as more than a dozen athletes made the cut for the Hangzhou Asian Games, scheduled to be held in September in China.

The evening session saw an exciting duel between local favourite Srabani Nanda and Jyothi Yarraji of Andhra Pradesh battling for supremacy in the women’s 100m dash. However, Jyothi Yarraji pipped Srabani Nanda to post a personal best time of 11.46 seconds to win gold.

In the longer sprint—400m race—Kerala’s Muhammed Anas fought a pitched battle with Sri Lanka’s Kalinga Kumarage for the gold. But Sri Lankan surged ahead to post a time of 45.64 secs to win gold.

While the Indian athlete settled for silver with a time of 45.76 secs which was his season best time.

Popular singer Sona Mohapatra took a packed auditorium by surprise when she was called upon the stage at the ongoing Indian Film Festival of Melbourne to give away an award and judge the long-standing and popular dance competition of the festival.

New Delhi, March 14 (Ians) Haryana sprinter Anjali Devi has pulled out of the women's 400 metres event of the Senior National Federation Cup athletics due to injury. The competition starts on Monday in Patiala.

The 23-year-old athlete said she had pulled her thigh muscles recently during a training session in Patiala.

"The doctor has advised me to take a break from training for four to six weeks. I'm undergoing rehabilitation. That is why I can't compete in the first major competition of the season," Anjali told Ians.

Anjali's personal best of 51.53 seconds, clocked during the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Meet in Lucknow in October 2019, was the fastest time of the season.

She also competed at the Doha World Athletics Championships the same year, but failed to advance to the semi-finals of the 400m race.

Patiala, Feb 18 (Ians) Odisha's international sprinter Dutee Chand warmed up for a challenging season ahead by winning 100m dash in 11.51 seconds in the first Indian Grand Prix here on Thursday.

Although Dutee, whose personal best and national record is 11.24 seconds for 100m dash, missed this year's Olympic Games qualification time of 11.15 seconds, she looks on course to book a ticket to Japan.

Racing after nearly 15 months, as the domestic calendar was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, Dutee, Asian Games silver medallist in 100m and 200m, didn't face any challenge from her rivals at Patiala's National Institute of Sports (Nis), and maintained her winning streak in the domestic circuit.

In January, 24 year old Dutee had planned to compete in a 60m track race at the Almaty Indoor international competition, but the event was cancelled at the eleventh hour because of Covid-19.

New Delhi, Feb 17 (Ians) India's top athletes, including Odisha's international sprinter Dutee Chand, have registered for the inaugural one-day Indian Grand Prix, the first seniors' track and field competition since the outbreak of the pandemic, to be held at the Patiala's National Institute of Sports (Nis) campus on Thursday.

A total of 15 events, including two races each in the men's 100m and 200m sprints, are scheduled at the Grand Prix. Odisha's international sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick will be seen in action in the 100m while Kerala's 400m sprinter Rajiv Arokia and Noah Nirmal Tom will compete in 200m.

Amoj Jacob (800m) and Dharun Ayyasamy (400m hurdles) are among other top athletes.

Veteran Telugu actor-filmmaker G. Vijaya Nirmala died on Thursday, her son Naresh has confirmed. She was 75.

Naresh, who is also a popular Telugu actor, took to Twitter to announce the death of his mother.

"I regret to inform you that my mother, senior artiste, prominent producer and director Dr.A G Vijaya Nirmala passed away during early hours today, that is, 27.6.2019, at Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad, due to sickness. She was 75," Naresh tweeted.

"Her body will be kept at our residence from 11 a.m. Final rites will be held tomorrow (Friday)."

Vijaya Nirmala started her career as a child actor. At the age of five, she made her acting debut in 1950 Tamil film MacHcha Rekkai?and four years later she forayed into Telugu cinema with the film Panduranga Mahatyam.

It was through 1964 Malayalam film Bhargavi Nilayam, she rose to stardom and got noticed. She went on to work with Prem Nazir again in Udhyogastha.

Chennai, Jan 14: Telugu actor Chandramohan remembers late actress Anjali Devi and says that ever since he played her son in his debut movie - 1966 Telugu drama "Rangula Ratnam" - he treated her as his mother.

"I will always remain her son. I started off my career by playing her son in 'Rangula Ratnam', and since then we have shared a mother-son relationship. I still can't digest the news that she is no more. I feel like I have lost my mother," Chandramohan told Ians.

Anjali Devi passed away here Monday due to heart-related problems. She was 86.

"I don't mind if it's called her autobiography because I was only helping to put down her thoughts into words. I was merely a stenographer. We have been working on this book for the last few years and I regret that we couldn't get it published on time," Rao told Ians.

"I tried to find a publisher but things didn't fall in place. Unfortunately, she is no more today. Now I hope to do it alone with the permission.

Chennai, Jan 13: The vital organs of veteran Telugu actress Anjali Devi, who died here Monday, will be donated to Sri Ramachandra Media College (Srmc). She was 86.

"Her body has already been shifted to Srmc. She wanted her organs to be donated to the college. On Thursday, her body will be brought home from the hospital for the public to pay their last respects," Anjali's agent told Ians.
