Martin Short is continuing his off-screen role as the consummate professional. During an appearance on NBC’s Today show Wednesday, co-host Kathie Lee Gifford asked Short about his late wife in a line of questioning that made it clear she was unaware that the comedian's wife was no longer living. Photos: Hollywood's Memorable Mea Culpas Gifford complimented Short and his wife for their strong marriage and jokingly asked why the couple were still madly in love after 36 years together. Martin Short has seemingly accepted Kathie Lee Gifford's apology. While speaking with E! News, Short was asked about the "Today" show incident in which Gifford asked about his relationship with his now deceased wife.
When Short appeared on NBC's "Today" on Wednesday, Gifford praised his relationship with his late wife Nancy Dolman and said, “He and Nancy have got one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?" Short answered and said, “We, uh, married 36 years.”
Nancy Dolman passed away nearly two years ago.
"I think that it's live television and people make mistakes and there's no ill will intended," Short told E! News. "And I think it's nice to aspire to be kind of elegant."
Gifford apologized on-air and later took to Twitter to send her regards to Short.

Martin Short Accepts Kathie Lee Gifford's Apology
Actor Martin Short has accepted presenter Kathie Lee Gifford's apology after she quizzed him about his marriage to his late wife during a live U.S. TV interview on Wednesday.
The funnyman was a guest on breakfast show Today when host Gifford began probing his personal life and praising Short's long marriage to tragic Nancy Dolman, clearly unaware she had died two years ago.
Short handled the uncomfortable chat with grace and skirted over the questions on air, prompting a mortified Gifford to take to her Twitter.com account to acknowledge the insensitive blunder later that day.
And owning up to her mistake after the show, she took to Twitter.com and wrote, "I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/ (with) enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful."
And the Father of the Bride star has since made peace with Gifford over the incident, insisting he knew she meant no harm.

By now, you probably know the story: Martin Short appeared on the fourth hour of Today yesterday to promote Madagascar 3. Partway through his conversation with co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, Gifford jovially asked Short to talk about his marriage — apparently unaware that Short’s wife, actress Nancy Dolman, died of ovarian cancer in 2010. The former SNL star took Gifford’s clueless questions in stride, even though his heart must have been breaking… especially when Gifford went on to ask if he and Dolman were still in love, or how they make each other laugh. Eeeesh.

It was the question that launched a thousand cringes. Kathie Lee Gifford hit Twitter on Wednesday to apologize to Martin Short for asking the actor about what makes his marriage work so well, not realizing the "Madagascar 3" star's wife passed away in 2010.

Martin Short appeared on the bogged-down Fourth Circle of Today this morning, braving the wine-soaked winds of Kathie Lee Gifford to promote his role in Madagascar 3. The result was one of the more memorably awkward moments on a show comprised of almost nothing but: A typically auto-piloted Gifford downshifted into standard daytime talk show blather by asking about Short's marriage to wife Nancy Dolman, asking, "How many years now for you guys?"—a blandly standard, innocuous question, save for the sad fact that Dolman died of ovarian cancer in 2010. Kathie Lee Gifford may be in need of more coffee. She and Hoda Kotb were talking to Martin Short about Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted on the Today show Wednesday, and all was going well. Martin Short Brushes Off Embarrassing TV Interview About Late Wife
Actor Martin Short brushed off marriage questions from TV presenter Kathy Lee Gifford during a live U.S. show on Wednesday - because his tragic wife Nancy Dolman died two years ago.
The funnyman was promoting his upcoming movie Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted on breakfast programme Today when conversation turned toward his personal life.
However, interviewer Gifford failed to conduct proper research and she applauded Short's long-lived marriage to comedienne Dolman, who lost her battle with cancer in 2010, setting the stage for a very awkward chat.
But gracious Short kept his cool, skirting over the issue instead of calling out the 58-year-old host on air.
Gifford said, "He and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in showbusiness. How many years now for you guys?", to which he responded, "We (had been) married for 36 years."
Gifford, however, kept pressing, saying, "But you're still, like, in love?" Short forced a small smile and responded, "Madly, madly in love."
Fans watching the awkward interview were mortified, taking to Twitter.com to fire off their thoughts.
One fan wrote, "Kathy Lee Gifford just had an #epicfail (sic)," while another tweeted, "Just saw Kathy Lee Gifford ask Marty Short abt (about) his wife/marriage. She died abt 2 yrs ago. Gulp! He was very gracious."
Gifford has since realised her big blunder and has taken to her Twitter page to apologise for her mistake.

Kathie Lee Gifford walked into a cringe-worthy live TV gaffe on "Today" Wednesday morning, when she asked actor and comedian Martin Short about the state of his marriage. Gifford seemed oblivious to the fact that Short's wife Nancy Dolman passed away nearly two years ago.
Intending to pay Short a compliment, Gifford said, “And he and Nancy have got one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?” Short seemed taken aback but did his best to deal with the awkward question gracefully. He answered, “We, uh, married 36 years.”
Short's late wife Nancy Dolman reportedly battled ovarian cancer in her final years, although a coroner confirmed she died of natural causes.
