Several legacy characters have returned to their respective horror franchises years after the original movies hit the big screen. The latest actor to hint at a potential return is A Nightmare on Elm Street alum Patricia Arquette.

Speaking to ComicBook, Arquette, who played Kristen Parker in 1987's A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, said she would definitely be open to reprising her role under one condition. "You know, I never really thought that in my dreams I'd be a gymnast, so I don't know," she joked. "Maybe I'll come back if I can change my superpower, but I mean, I don't know. I can be invisible, I can be anti-gravitational. I can do all kinds of things. Why do I have to do gymnastics? I like gymnastics. Don't get me wrong, but I'd like something a little more lethal when I'm dealing with [Freddy Krueger]."

In Nightmare on Elm Street 4, director Renny Harlin transformed Freddy Krueger from a villain into a heroic leading man figure. The franchise shifted from dark origins to humor, with Freddy becoming an iconic pop culture character with smart quips. Despite reboots and over two decades since its last movie, Freddy Krueger remains a conversational point among horror genre fans.

Turning a child killer into a wise-cracking hero is not something that often happens in movies, but one exception to the rule is A Nightmare on Elm Streets dream demon, Freddy Krueger. From his origins as a dark, teenager-tormenting creature of nightmares, the character played by Robert Englund across eight movies, a TV series, and several cameo appearances evolved into a character that fans took to their hearts despite his horrifying history. The beginning of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is arguably one of the most relatable opening horror sequences for any disenfranchised youth filled with teenage angst. Introducing our traumatized hero, Kristen (Patricia Arquette), the credits play as Angelo Badalamenti's score transitions into Dokken's "Into the Fire" as Kristen mainlines coffee grinds to stay awake. She's building a papier-maché house of the boarded up structure she sees in her nightmares. Immediately, you empathize with her. She looks like a friend in need (who could also use another pack of cigarettes). 

Arquette was the perfect casting choice to be a Nancy for a different generation. As a result, "Dream Warriors" director Chuck Russell had to make an "Elm Street" movie for a different set of teens who would respond to something bigger, badder, and more ambitious than Wes Craven's original and "Freddy's Revenge." Shopping costs an arm and a leg – literally – in Jim Wynorski‘s Chopping Mall, a cult classic horror movie from 1986 that horror master James Wan happens to be a big fan of.

Speaking with Slash Film this week, Wan expressed interest in someday putting his own stamp on Chopping Mall, set in a shopping mall (naturally) and centered on killer robots.

Wan tells the outlet, “I have many horror films that I think are just fun that I love, and I’m pretty sure the horror community shares them with me. I love movies like ‘Chopping Mall.’ I love ‘Night of the Creeps.’ These, to me, are just sort of fun horror films that I would love to be able to dive into one day, or do them but with the way that I make my films.”

Sleep can literally kill you. That's what makes "A Nightmare on Elm Street" so downright spooky. Upon reading a mind-blowing story about a young Cambodian child, who was terrified to sleep and then died while apparently dreaming, filmmaker Wes Craven conjured up a sleep demon for a screenplay. Freddy Krueger was born out of a real-life wave of similar incidents that swept across America in the 1980s. The 1984 slasher film, produced by New Line's Robert Shaye, saved the company from disaster and put it immovably on the map. It reinvented the slasher genre at a time when the horror subgenre was on its way out. By leaning into the universal human experience of sleep, it brought genuine fear to the surface again.

Actors Nicole Shipley and Atli Oskar Fjalarsson have been added to the cast of the upcoming thriller film Sable.

Shipley has been in several films (Club Lingerie, Guardians of The Galaxy, Jailbait) and Fjalarsson is an Icelandic actor that was written up in Variety as one of the rising stars from Europe.

When speaking about the actors, Director Michael Matteo Rossi told us "Having known Nicole for a few years now and having worked with her on a past film; I was indeed thrilled to have her come on board. After I cast Nicole, I thought of Atli (who I had met somewhat recently) to play the boyfriend and they had fantastic chemistry together on set and were a joy to work with. The interesting thing about both of them is that they are young stars truly on the rise and really added to the overall quality of the film.

Friday Night Frights at Cinefamily in Los Angeles held a Nightmare on Elm Street marathon over the weekend. On the program: Nightmare entries 1-7 (sorry, Freddy vs. Jason).

The event ran from dusk till dawn with very little interruption. Some of those involved in Dream Warriors swung by for a 20-minute Q&A before the film and I was able to capture it on video.

A scientist invents a technique to enter people's memories deep within their subconscious when their mind is at its most vulnerable state. Extraction is a sci-fi thriller that deals with captured memories and criminal activity. In the future, an engineer designs a device that allows a person to retrieve memories from subjects. The Department of Justice wants to use this tool to extract memories involving robberies, and murders to convict criminals. Unwittingly, the engineer becomes trapped inside the mind of psychopath. Now, Thomas (Sasha Roiz) must work with the criminal to find an escape, if escape is possible. Extracted, the sci fi thriller Sasha Roiz filmed last year, will have its world premiere at the South By Southwest festival in Austin in March. Filmmaker Magazine has the full SXSW lineup, announced earlier today.

Extracted will be screened in the Emerging Visions section. The date/venue info hasn't been posted yet, but it will probably show up on the film's page on SXSW.com one of these days.

This year, the festival runs from March 9 to 17.

The original I Spit On Your Grave, initially titled Day of the Women by writer/director Meir Zarchi, was one of the most controversial rape-revenge films of the exploitation genre. It told the story of Jennifer Hills, a writer trying to finish her latest novel in an isolated lakeside house in the American south. She attracts the unwanted attention of four locals, who proceed to terrorise and repeatedly rape her, and then leave her for dead. After recovering physically, if not psychologically, from her ordeal, Jennifer wreaks revenge on her rapists one-by-one in a bloody and biblical fashion - Day of the Women indeed.

The remake of I Spit on Your Grave was released on DVD and Blu-ray February 8th; yet, the promotional campaign continues! In this latest clip, director Steven R. In the past few years there has been an influx of remakes in the horror genre. We all know that’s not a good thing but unfortunately the mainstream fans line the aisles and spend the bucks that allows this to continue to happen. It is well documented that I have not ever been nor will I ever be a fan of these remakes. I will say now that I am man enough to admit when I’m wrong. I guess the formula needs to be correct for a successful remake. Then comes walking in I Spit on Your Grave. Read more to see what I thought of this remake of the 1978 film of the same name.

The tale of I Spit on Your Grave is one that all fathers dread when they have a daughter, as it is worse than anything that Liam Neeson’s daughter in Taken could ever imagine.

There are several horror titles releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray today. The most notable releases for Tuesday, February 8th include Wes Craven's poorly received My Soul to Take, a chilling production from France titled High Lane, Anchor Bay Entertainment's I Spit on Your Grave and finally, Paranormal Activity 2. This last title has already confirmed a sequel, with High Lane standing out amongst these titles. High Lane promises double terror from terrific heights and from socially isolated cannibals. Sure, the violence and rape sequences of the I Spit On Your Grave remake are downright offensive, but there is other ways to offend an audience member. The contempt that this remake has for women is offensive. The film's take on retarded characters is offensive. The portrayal of small town living and the faces that populate these areas is offensive.

Well fiends, it is another week for us to plop down our hard earned dollars for some ghoulish digital entertainment. The week we have an exploitation classic hitting Blu-Ray as well as its remake plus more! Check it out beyond the break.

We are very giddy this week because a couple of titles that are near and dear to our hearts will be available for you folks to take home.

While we had gone on ad nauseam about the spectacular second Paranormal Activity demonic home invasion film, you can now watch it in your own house over and over again. Your home surveillance camera videos may never be the same again! We are also treated to not one, but both I Spit on Your Graves - the original from the 1970s and the new remake of a gritty film which may be disturbing to some but nonetheless empowering.

The other titles released this week from our genre may not be as beloved, but they are worth mentioning for the completists out there. Maybe they make better sense when viewed in the safety of one's home.
