Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio DVD review for “The Silent Twins,” the story of a famous case regarding British twins who only speak to each other and not the outside world. This is currently available in a Blu-ray DVD package from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This unusual biography film, based on real events, is about the Gibbons twins (Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence) two girls in Britain who make a pact to never speak outside of their togetherness. This causes consternation with their parents, schools and various social workers assigned to their case. They retreat into creativity, writing and crime, both of which brings them various degrees of satisfaction and dis-association, but their bond and silence is never broken. When a criminal trial separates them, the next phase of the relationship begins.

The story of June and Jennifer Gibbons is one of those “strange but true” curiosities. It’s pitched somewhere alongside the Enfield poltergeist and the dancing plague of 1518. The writers – twins born in 1963 – grew up in Haverfordwest, Wales, the daughters of first-generation Barbadian immigrants. From an early age, they refused to speak to anyone but themselves.
There were other ways to communicate with the world – through poems and stories, or when they were older, drugs, sex and acts of petty crime. At 19, they were found guilty of 16 counts of burglary, theft, and arson. The sisters were institutionalised with an indefinite sentence at the infamous Broadmoor psychiatric hospital where they remained for 11 years.
People tend to fixate on the reasons behind the sisters’ selective mutism. But Agnieszka SmoczyÅ.ska’s The Silent Twins, in its own impassioned and lyrical way, asks an entirely different question: is their choice really that hard to comprehend?...

Polish film and TV writer/director Agnieszka Smoczyńska's biographical film "The Silent Twins" is heading to Peacock. The movie is inspired by the book of the same name written by investigative journalist Marjorie Wallace. Published in 1986 under the title "The Silent Twins: A true story of love and hate, dreams and desolation, genius and destruction," Wallace's book is itself based on the true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, twin sisters who only communicated with each other, and came to be known as "the silent twins."
Smoczyńska's film is heading to Peacock after getting a very limited theatrical release from Focus Features on September 16, 2022 -- meaning, this is probably the first time most people have even heard of the movie. So, before it joins acclaimed 2022 films like Scott Derrickson's "The Black Phone" on NBCUniversal's streaming service, here's everything you need to know about the film ahead of time.

"Silence was their bond. Imagination set them free." Focus Features has revealed the official US trailer for The Silent Twins, based on a true story, the latest from unique Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska. This originally premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival this year, playing in the Un Certain Regard section; it also stopped by the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czechia. The Silent Twins is the astounding true story of twin sisters who only communicated with one another, and never spoke to anyone else. As a result, they created a rich, fascinating world to escape the reality of their own lives. But this ends up leading them down a reckless path which lands them in an even worse place. Based on the best-selling book The Silent Twins, the film stars Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance as the two twins. The cast also includes Jodhi May, Michael Smiley, Nadine Marshall, Treva Etienne,...

Any number of directors could have shot Andrea Seigel’s straightforwardly moving screenplay for “The Silent Twins” and turned out a straightforwardly moving film in the process. It’s hard to imagine any of those movies looking, sounding or feeling quite like the one Agnieszka Smoczyńska has made, however. Based on the desperately sad true story of two intensely connected Black twin sisters failed by Britain’s educational, legal and mental health services in the ’70s and ’80s, this brazen, tear-your-heart-out drama gets the full benefit of the Polish filmmaker’s singular imagination. Layering one wild formal flourish over another — from macabre stop-motion animation to elaborately choreographed musical fantasies — to channel the inner lives of two young women who communicated only with each other, keeping the rest of the world outside their circle, it’s a swing for the fences that sometimes, almost by design, spins out of control.

Itsy Bitsy is a horror film with lots of spiders. Developed by first time feature film director Micah Gallo, this title involves a single mother and a move to small guesthouse. Inside the new home, Kara must look after an aging antiquities collector, Walter. Once an ancient artifact is found, this family is put in jeopardy. Itsy Bitsy centrally stars Elizabeth Roberts as Kara, along with Bruce Davison (Along Came the Devil), Chloe Perrin and Treva Etienne. The film is out now and the latest release details are hosted here. Recently, director Gallo has been interviewed on this title. Developed from a Kickstarter campaign, Gallo also mentions his influences for the film: "[its] something like Jaws with edgy character drama. Kind of like The Exorcist. But really, if you're familiar with something like Q the Winged Serpent or Of Unknown Origin (Movieweb)." This filmmaker knows his horror films. Gallo also studied...

I’ve got a super fun trailer for you to watch today for a new horror thriller called Itsy Bitsy, and it’s going to be especially fun for those of you who hate spiders! You see, the movie centers around a giant spider who terrorizes a family!
Here’s the synopsis that has been released for the movie that offers us some insight into the story and where it came from:
A story tangled up in a web of family drama, personal demons, and a horrifying monster.
Based on the centuries-old poem, a family moves into a secluded mansion where they soon find themselves being targeted by an ancient entity taking the form of a giant spider.
Kara, a private nurse and single mother, moves from the big city to the quiet countryside with her two children, 13-year-old Jesse and 8-year-old Cambria, to live with and take care of...

"Went up the water spout..." This looks scary as all hell. Scream Factory has debuted the first teaser trailer for a new indie horror feature titled Itsy Bitsy, from filmmaker Micah Gallo (a VFX producer making his feature directorial debut). As the title hints at, this is a new horror movie about a giant spider but this time it's actually, seriously scary - not some fake looking bug. This one looks real, and giant, and the shots in this will give you the creeps. Don't watch if you hate spiders (like me) - it'll ruin your day/week/year/life. "A creepy-crawly creature feature based on the centuries-old poem, Itsy Bitsy weaves a sinister web of family drama, personal demons, and a horrifying monster." It stars Bruce Davison, Denise Crosby, Elizabeth Roberts, Arman Darbo, Chloe Perrin, Treva Etienne, and Eileen Dietz. Tread carefully, my friends. Here's the teaser trailer (+ two...

Falling Skies is mutating at the pace of its aliens. Where will it end up, asks Ron?
This review contains spoilers.
4.8 A Thing With Feathers
As usual, Falling Skies takes the easier, happier way out. After the downturn in mood of last week's episode, in which the Espheni scored a victory over the Second Mass thanks to some poor civic planning and an exposed, exploding gas line, Falling Skies reverts to the mean this week by using the miraculous alien technology at their disposal to correct a pesky, depressing turn away from the happy and soap opera that the show typically trades in. Unsurprisingly, the episode is titled A Thing With Feathers, which is a line cribbed from the Emily Dickinson poem.
On the surface, the surviving major characters emerge from their fallout shelter, having successfully snookered the aliens by hiding from their scanners and explosives after the failure of...

You might remember that, a few weeks ago, I posted an item about Sophie Okonedo and her criticisms of the lack of opportunities, not just for her, but for her fellow actors of color in the U.K., and that she gets many more opportunities and offers in the U.S, than she does in her own native country (Here). Well, now joining her (and the many other black British actors who've spoken out about this issue) is actor Treva Etienne, who’s currently playing a major role in TNT’s sci-fi summer series "Falling Skies," which is executive produced by Steve Spielberg. Voodoo has always been a creepy subject, and a popular choice for horror films, perhaps most notably with the classic (and first) White Zombie, starring Bela Lugosi as an evil voodoo master. Now, the misunderstood religion finds itself in the spotlight once again, with FX’s hit American Horror Story: Coven. But that’s not the only horror property delving into the Haitian religion. Allow me to introduce you to Walter Boholst’s horror film Voodoo Possession, out today, January 14th, on VOD platforms. Despite the over the top name, the film actually has complicated themes (and Danny Trejo), and isn’t a straight riff on the wacky voodoo doll tropes of bad horror movies. I recently got a chance to talk with actor and star Ryan Caltagirone (The Flip Side, The Big Year), who plays the tortured protagonist Aiden Chase in the film.
