Not all horror movies are going to be of the highest caliber. Directors like Jordan Peele, Mike Flanigan, and Zach Cregger may be elevating the genre, and A24 has steadily been coming out with top-tier horror films, but sometimes, fans just want to sit back, relax, and watch a bloody good movie that doesn't try to do more than entertain.
There are many horror movies that are rated surprisingly low on review sites like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. For the sake of this list, attention deserves to go to the most criminally underrated horror movies and hidden gems. These horror films may not have impressed audiences and critics, but they're still worth adding to any watch list.

Jon M. Chu understood the pressure that he’d be facing when he took on directing Universal’s Wicked, an adaptation of one of the most successful stage musicals of all time. A Wicked fan himself — he’s seen the show 12 times, seven before being hired to helm the film — he knew the stakes were high for casting Elphaba and Galinda and bringing the vibrant world of Oz to the big screen. “If there’s anything I’ve learned through the business, it’s how to deal with pressure. For Wicked specifically, that is a whole other thing,” Chu says, adding that the show’s roof-raising anthem was a particular challenge. “ ‘Defying Gravity’ is one of the most complicated things I’ve ever shot in my entire life. I felt more pressure with ‘Defying Gravity’ than the whole movie itself.”

Hurricanes are frightening all on on their own without having to involve a predatory animal. Yet Carlos Brooks’ Burning Bright not only features a Category 3 hurricane, a ferocious tiger is thrown in for added effect. Back when this film was first announced, its plot was met with laughter and doubt; the idea was as intriguing as it was ridiculous. Over time though, this suspenseful story of a girl, a boy, and a tiger has become a shining example of how to follow through on a high concept.
Two distinct yet equally uncontrollable forces are on display at the beginning of Burning Bright. As Hurricane Isabel builds a sense of foreboding in the background, a young woman finally confronts her family situation. The collegebound Kelly is making the difficult decision of leaving behind her autistic brother Tom when life catches her off guard again. Kelly’s plans are dashed after her...

Modern slasher movie remakes often improve on original premises with updated technology and character development for a new audience. Films like "Sorority Row" and "Maniac" benefited from new technology, setting, and tone to create eerie and tense atmospheres. The 2020 remake of "The Invisible Man" expertly delves into themes of domestic violence, adding depth and critical acclaim to the original story.
Slasher movies are a staple in the horror genre, but over the years, remakes of these films have become arguably even better than their originals. Within the horror movie genre, some of the best horror movies are slashers that stand out for their use of extreme gore and memorable antagonists. With horror truly finding its feet in the early twentieth century, it's no surprise that in recent years, so many slasher movies have been given the remake treatment.

Tom Malloy directs and stars as Jack, a divorced ballroom dance fan, who keeps missing Jill, also a dance fan, by minutes in this good-natured film
Written and directed by its star Tom Malloy, this low-budget comedy is likably offbeat, full of tiny kinks in every sense, with mildly surprising plot twists and supporting characters who are into threesomes, S&m, and so on. But it’s also fully conventional in that like the vast majority of romcoms it sets out to assemble a heterosexual couple and eventually succeeds. The core romance is sutured when Malloy’s Jack and Briana Evigan’s Jill, two ordinary normcore singletons who both love proper ballroom dancing and swing, finally get to dance together at the climax. Honestly, it’s so brazenly obvious in following every rule of genre that it’s barely a spoiler to reveal it: the fun is in how they get there.

Mark Rosman‘s The House on Sorority Row (1982) and Stewart Hendler‘s Sorority Row (2009) feel shoved aside in their respective horror classes. Titles like Pieces, Black Christmas, and The Dorm That Dripped Blood get more frequent mentions when discussing pre-90s sorority or dormitory slashers. Remake debates rarely include Sorority Row in their reassessments of unfairly stigmatized 2000s horror revamps based on nostalgia biases (among other reasons). It’s interesting how both seem equally less popular despite their amassed cult followings after meager box office openings.
It’s almost like Hendler attempted to shake the original’s mojo by deeming Sorority Row an adaptation of Rosman’s screenplay Seven Sisters — the earlier iteration of what would become The House on Sorority Row. Don’t mind the trickiness because Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger write their re-imagining indebted to The House on Sorority Row. Maybe late-2000s remake fatigue led to...

There are two types of people in this world: People who love the “Step Up” movies, and people who haven’t seen them all. The franchise began as a straightforward teen romance in 2006 but quickly evolved into a series of lavish pop spectacles, propelled by cheesy melodrama and bolstered by elaborate dance choreography, performed by some of the greatest dancers in the world. As the films get crazier, so too does our love of the quirky cast and their over-the-top shenanigans; think “Fast & Furious,” if the franchise found its outlandish tone in the second film instead of the fifth. The sixth feature film in the series, “Step Up: Year of the Dance,” has just arrived on home video, so let’s take a look back at this whole, wonderful franchise:

One of the best things about the horror genre is its ability to divide audiences and create strong, passionate reactions. We may split on a comedy, sure, because we find different things funny, but chances are we won’t carry that experience with us much past when the end credits roll. Horror is different. Few filmmakers embody this ideal more than Darren Lynn Bousman: while his recent output of films might not be for everyone, for the people they are for they are really for. After finding success within the studio system thanks to his trilogy of Saw films and his criminally underrated remake of Mother’s Day,...
