- In 1992, won two Tony Awards for "Falsettos:" as Best Score (Musical), both music and lyrics, and, with collaborator James Lapine, as Best Book (Musical).
- He and Rachel Sheinkin's musical, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee", at the Marriott Theatre in Chicago, Illinois was nominated for a 2009 Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Production of a Musical (Large).
