Longtime collaborator with Lynn Ahrens. The two have worked on music and lyrics for numerous Broadway musicals, movies and animation projects, including Anastasia (1997) and Schoolhouse Rock! (1973). (2000)

Won Broadway's 1998 Tony Award as Best Original Score, his music with collaborator Lynn Ahrens' lyrics, for "Ragtime. He was also nominated in 1991 for Best Score (Musical), again his music and Ahrens' lyrics, for "Once on This Island."

He was nominated for a 2004 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best New Musical of the 2003 season for "Ragtime", performed at the Piccadilly Theatre.
