Exclusive: Mark Gatiss is suitably on-trend with Bookish. He created and stars in the upcoming series as Gabriel Book, an eccentric bookshop owner and expert sleuth who helps the police solve tricky cases. The show has contained stories – one crime plays out over two episodes – and there are lighthearted elements and something comforting about the cluttered antiquarian bookshop, situated in a picture-perfect historic London lane. There is pre-launch buzz and international buyers have already started snapping up the series.
This is cozy crime, but as the show unfolds, Gatiss’ writing reveals layers and wrinkles that give the series teeth.
“It’s become a bit of an instant cliche, ‘cozy crime’, but I don’t think it has to be,” Gatiss tells Deadline. “It can be welcoming, and this has period elements that people love, and they love a world where you can’t solve crimes with computers. But it’s...

London’s big week in the international TV sun has come to an end, with not one, not two, but three major events running in parallel. Mip London made its debut at the swanky Savoy Hotel and Iet conference center, the well-established London TV Screenings were back and bigger than ever, and the gig that began it all, the BBC Studios Showcase, was held once again. We’ve rounded up five faces who defined the week, from big American stars in town with the U.S. studios to the market creators taking a shot at glory.

One day longer and hosting unveils of big, big must-check-out series such as Paramount’s “King & Conqueror,” Fremantle’s “Sandokan” and BBC Studios reboot “Walking With Dinosaurs,” this week’s London TV Screenings did nothing to dent its recent status in a new biz order as one of Europe’s two key TV markets alongside October’s Mipcom.
It was these titles and a brace of classy star-studded crime thrillers – Andrew Lincoln’s “Cold Water,” Jesse Williams’ “Costiera,” Mark Gatiss’ “Bookish,” “Maigret” with Benjamin Wainwright – which looked to be moving the needle at this year’s London Screenings, which unspooled Feb. 23-28.
“We are very positively surprised to see that the London TV Screenings has quickly become a key gathering for European fiction,” said José Antonio Salso at Spain’s Atresmedia TV.

Will this year’s eighth Mission: Impossible movie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, actually live up to its title and be the final outing in the iconic action franchise? While the recent trailer for the movie certainly hinted that this is the case, with the footage teasing all manner of Easter eggs and finding Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt asking his team to trust him "one last time," it has not been confirmed that this will indeed be the last hurrah for Hunt. Now, director Christopher McQuarrie has chimed in... and suggests that, yes, this is the end of the line.
Speaking with Empire, McQuarrie called Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning the “conclusion” to Ethan Hunt’s arc. Which first began in Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible way, way back in 1996.
“It is, I hope, the satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc. I’m pretty confident that...

During the early 2000s, American television was laden with captivating crime drama series. Iconic shows like The Wire, Law and Order, and Criminal Minds dominated the airwaves and brought acclaim to the genre. Award-winning series Dexter, Numb3rs and Breaking Bad enjoyed fruitful television runs as well, but there is a 20-year-old crime drama series that arguably outshines its peers — Prison Break. Created by Paul Scheuring, Prison Break is a 2005 crime drama series that aired on Fox for four seasons and was revived in 2017 for a fifth and final season. The series follows a man, Michael Scofield, on his mission to break his brother out of prison. Could Benedict Cumberbatch return to one of his most beloved roles? In a recent interview with Variety (via ComicBook), the actor gave some conditions if he were to ever return as Sherlock Holmes.
After joking about needing "a lot of money," Cumberbatch explained that for him to return to the role that launched him into super stardom, the story would have to surpass the original:
"It would take it to be better than it ever was. You leave them or yourselves wanting more. There’s always that itch to scratch, but I think it would have to be the superlative version of what we’ve already achieved."
Sherlock debuted on the BBC in 2010 and became a hit with fans and critics alike, with its feature-length three-episode seasons. It was created by Stephen Moffat (Doctor Who) and Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen) and is a modern retelling of Sherlock Holmes...

In his latest interview, Cumberbatch revealed that returning as the illustrious crime solver Sherlock Holmes is not completely off the table. There’s just one thing that the creators have to get right.

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed the humorous ways his Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star Robert Downey Jr. would relieve tension on set. Downey would joke about the fact that both he and Cumberbatch portrayed Sherlock Holmes.
Downey portrayed Sherlock in the 2009 period film Sherlock Holmes, with Jude Law starring opposite him as Dr. John Watson. The film, which won Downey the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, went on to spawn a sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Cumberbatch played the famous detective in the BBC's crime drama series created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, with Martin Freeman as Watson. Cumberbatch's Sherlock was also successful, winning multiple Emmys and a Peabody Award.

Released in early 2020, Netflix’s Dracula series offers a fresh and exciting take on one of literature’s most iconic and suave monsters. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the masterminds behind the groundbreaking BBC Sherlock series, this adaptation pulls viewers into a dark, suspenseful, horrifically gory, and often witty reinterpretation of Bram Stoker’s classic tale. From its stunning visuals to the commanding performances, especially from its lead actor, the show presents a unique balance of gothic horror and modern storytelling. Across three feature-length episodes, it explores the original classic stories and acts in three distinct stories.
At its core, Dracula isn’t just about fangs and blood, but - like its source material - a profound examination of humanity, fear, and the meaning of evil itself. Moffat and Gatiss’ flair for clever dialogue and inventive storytelling brings new dimensions to the narrative, while still honoring the spirit...

2020's Dracula miniseries is a totally fresh reimagining of Bram Stoker's original novel, making several huge changes from the book and giving the narrative an entirely different subtext. The project was fairly polarizing upon its release, but in the years since, audiences have begun to appreciate this series for its bold vision and clear storytelling voice. While other Dracula-inspired projects like Nosferatu have been huge box office hits thanks to their loyalty to the original text, 2020's Dracula is arguably a riskier and braver adaptation that isn't afraid to take some liberties with the story.
The Dracula miniseries comes from Doctor Who writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who bring their own witty creativity to this original script. The pair made a name for themselves on the BBC's iconic sci-fi drama, with Moffat serving as head writer between 2010 and 2017. This adaptation of Dracula stars John Heffernan as Jonathan Harker,...

Robert Eggers’ new movie Nosferatu is a chilling, gorgeous vampire film based on the 1922 film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which is an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. If you’re craving more takes on Stoker's classic novel after watching Nosferatu, you need to watch the BBC One miniseries Dracula, now streaming on Netflix. Like Nosferatu, it roughly follows the story beats of Stoker’s novel while adding its own embellishments. BBC One's Dracula was developed by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the latter of whom also plays Renfield, and stars Claes Bang (The Northman), whose charismatic and charming performance makes this interpretation of Stoker's most famous vampire stand out among the rest.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning had the highest budget of any film in the Mission: Impossible franchise, somewhere in the range of $290 million… but the box office numbers took a dip, the film ending up with a haul of $566 million at the worldwide box office. A lower amount than Ghost Protocol ($694 million), Rogue Nation ($688 million), and Fallout ($786 million) had earned. And they all had substantially lower budgets. With the next film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, set to reach theatres on May 23, 2025, the folks working behind-the-scenes might have an idea that the franchise needs to be shaken up a bit. According to a Rumor shared by The Sun, they’re going to attempt to do this by pulling a younger version of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character into the action.

The following contains spoilers for Doctor Who, "Joy to the World," now streaming on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer.
Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor returned for his first solo outing in 2024's Doctor Who Christmas special, "Joy to the World." The conclusion to Doctor Who Season 1 (aka Series 14) saw the Doctor and Ruby Sunday parting ways, as Ruby reunited with her birth mother. This left the Doctor traveling on his own to the Time Hotel on Christmas. Here, all was not well and the Doctor soon detected the presence of an old enemy. The Time Lord wasn't alone for long in this new adventure, as following a mysterious briefcase through the hotel soon brought him into contact with Joy, played by Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan.
Joy had been billed as the Doctor's new one-off companion for the Christmas special, but Coughlan's role in the special might have been smaller than most fans were expecting.

Joy had been billed as the Doctor's new one-off companion for the Christmas special, but Coughlan's role in the special might have been smaller than most fans were expecting.

Ncuti Gatwa has just had his first Christmas as The Doctor and has brought "Joy to the World" for the holiday. The Doctor Who special, guest starring Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan, has overall received a strong reception from critics.
Coughlan has drawn high praise for her role, though limited in her time on screen. While she may draw certain fans of "The Ton" to the series, the writings of Lady Whistledown aren’t the only teases to grace the small screen. The episode, written by former showrunner Steven Moffat, included more than a few Easter eggs and paid tribute to a recent time in our history where people had never been further apart at Christmas.

Mark Gatiss is known primarily for his role in the BBC’s modern adaption of Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Gatiss played Mycroft Holmes in the adaptation created by former Doctor Who showrunner Stephen Moffat, with whom he co-wrote the series - and with whom he may be working on a revival.
Gatiss is known for his acting career, but he’s contributed heavily to British television with involvement in major shows such as already mentioned Sherlock, Dracula, and Doctor Who. Of the latter show, Gatiss has not returned to write for the sci-fi series since 2017, and now fans can know why, per Radio Times.

The BBC’s Sherlock was a favorite among fans, and while there has been a lot of Sherlock season 5 news and rumors for years, nothing has materialized. Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes is one of the most recognizable literary characters, and his success has been such that he and his most memorable cases have been adapted to all types of media. The BBC version, simply titled Sherlock, was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and brought the Great Detective (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his partner John Watson (Martin Freeman) to modern-day London.
Sherlock was praised for its stories and the performances of its main cast, especially the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock himself. The show aired from 2010 to 2017 for four seasons, one mini-episode, and a special episode, and while the first two seasons were very well-received by critics and viewers, the final seasons weren’t as successful.

Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, The Imitation Game, Sherlock, Eric) on Tuesday recalled interacting, as Doctor Strange, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony “Iron Man” Stark on the set of Avengers: Infinity War and adding a “douchebag” to one of his lines, making it memorable.
The moment came about when Iron Man asked what Strange was doing in the fight they were in.
Annoyed, Cumberbatch recalled, he ended up replying: “Protecting your reality, douchebag,” with people on- and off-set reacting with “ooooohs.”
Cumberbatch shared the anecdote as part of the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival (Rsiff) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He also said that with his Doctor Strange character, “there is a lot more to play with,” while sharing that he had to work really “hard” not to get arrogant about his Marvel success.
What’s the star’s feeling about big film franchises, such as Marvel movies and Star Trek?...

Fans have been hoping for new episodes of the BBC Sherlock series since the fourth season aired in 2017. After years of trying to get a new installment off the ground, creator Steven Moffat remains hopeful.
"I'd love to do it again," Moffat told SFX via ComicBook. "Look, it's not a format that wears out. It's over a hundred years old and going strong." He went on to clarify comments made by producer Sue Vertue in which she seemingly hinted at more episodes. "Sue only said that because she was asked, and suddenly it becomes an announcement about a film," he explained. "There is no news here. We're just fending off that question. We would happily do it again, and I hope someday that we do. It seems perverse not to."

The 1960s and ‘70s saw British cinema become increasingly interested in rural landscapes. Horror films, in particular, set their stories within isolated countryside settings or claustrophobic villages, environments cut off from social norms where eccentricity and moral decay can become more pronounced. This trend is perhaps best exemplified by three films commonly referred to as ‘The Unholy Trilogy’: “The Witchfinder General” (1968), “The Blood on Satan’s Claw” (1971), and “The Wicker Man” (1974). All three of these films explore the breakdown of morality in isolated rural spaces, where societal norms are distant or non-existent.
Building on the success of the BBC’s Omnibus series, which included the highly regarded “Whistle and I’ll Come to You” (1968), the BBC launched “A Ghost Story for Christmas,” an anthology series that aired a film every year between 1971 and 1978. Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat continues to fuel excitement for season 5 of the acclaimed BBC crime drama. The beloved modern adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective stories, Sherlock ran from 2010 to 2017 and featured Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the show brought the famous sleuth into the 21st century, bringing humor and thrilling drama to its intricate mysteries. With the last episode airing seven years ago, however, demand remains for Sherlock season 5 as there hasn't been any progress.
In an interview with SFX, Moffat discussed the prospects of Sherlock season 5, following producer Sue Vertue’s recent comments on the award-winning series’ potential revival. He emphasized that while no concrete plans are in place, he and Gatiss remain enthusiastic about the idea of revisiting the show with season 5. The creator even suggested visiting an older version of Sherlock and John.

Following his piloting of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story Lot No. 249 last Christmas, the marvelous mind of Mark Gatiss is back yet again with another Ghost Story For Christmas, the special BBC spooky holiday tradition. This year, the co-writer of Sherlock will helm a tale based on E. Nesbit's Man-Size In Marble, which will follow Victorian couple Jack (Éanna Hardwicke) and Laura (Phoebe Horn) whose arrival in a quaint village is tainted by the whispered superstitions of their housekeeper.

While a custom-made popcorn bucket designed to emulate a certain movie isn’t a new development, the trend has certainly spiked this year after the viral sensation of the Dune: Part 2 sandworm bucket that garnered many jokes online. One movie that definitely capitalized off Dune‘s suggestive imagery was Deadpool & Wolverine, as they made a bucket where the entry was the oversized mouth of Wolverine. This year also saw custom popcorn buckets for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Alien: Romulus, Gladiator II, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and even a special Batman one to commemorate the character’s 85th anniversary. Time has revealed that not only will there be a special edition popcorn bucket for next year’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, but Tom Cruise himself had helped to design it. According to Rob Bennett, the director of food and beverage product strategy at AMC, Cruise would be instrumental in guiding...

The recently released trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (which you can watch in the embed above) showed that there’s going to be a lot of water-based action in this new sequel, and now a behind-the-scenes video has arrived online to show us a moment of star Tom Cruise preparing to perform some of those underwater stunts. Cruise himself also shared an image of him working on the movie underwater with the caption, “The training and preparation we put into this film is a culmination of all before it. From the depths, to the skies, I can’t wait to share more with you.” The video and the image can be seen below.

Almost six years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount has backtracked from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

There are many ways one could tell a story, whether on paper or on a screen. Sometimes, a great idea gets a paper format and a screen adaptation, with books often getting adapted into movies, TV shows, or both. There are certainly pros and cons for each format, but it's arguably harder to make a successful TV show.
Like creating books, movies, and similar media formats, creating a television series involves a masterful blend of compelling storytelling, interesting characters, engaging plotlines, and enough elements to resonate with audiences. Categorizing a show as good or bad is entirely subjective, but for the most part, a show has to be pretty high-quality to keep going, or it wouldn't get renewed for another season. A series has to maintain decent ratings to prove to networks that it's not a waste of money. But, even if a show gets renewed, it can certainly overstay its welcome.

The War Games, Patrick Troughton’s swansong as The Doctor, has had a re-edit. The vintage Doctor Who favourite is heading to iPlayer.
One of the most intriguing projects to emerge from Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary celebrations last year was the colourisation of the second ever serial The Daleks, which was re-edited down from six episodes to a 75 minute feature. The show split opinion amongst hardcore fans, but the general consensus seemed to be anything that encourages new and younger viewers to engage with classic Doctor Who should be encouraged.
