The Movie: "Things"
Where You Can Stream It: Shudder, Tubi
The Pitch: What do you do when you visit a cabin in the woods? If you are the friends at the center of 1989's "Things," then you sit around and drink beer. Maybe you walk around the house a little bit only to find that a bunch of giant ant creatures are secretly roaming around. Perhaps you will occasionally watch the news hosted by an adult film star.
Look, I understand that this synopsis could be a lot more straightforward. However, Andrew Jordan's infamous DIY horror is anything but straightforward, veering wildly between plot lines and tones across its 83-minute runtime. There are about five to ten straight minutes of our central characters doing nothing before something crazy happens, only to go back to yet another long stretch of nothingness. Their Canadian accents are so strong that your...

Well, I’ve stared at the unforgiving blankness of my computer screen long enough. I must proceed; there is nowhere to go but onwards, tackling (and trying to grasp) one of the most profound, odd, galaxy brain takes in horror cinema: Things (1989). As nondescript as that title is, the film itself is anything but: there are a million things to discuss in Things, and I’ll try my best to be at least as coherent as the film itself.
Made for around $30,000 Canadian and shot on 8 and 16mm, Things skipped theatrical and caught the tail end of a Dtv boom in the late ‘80s. So yes, I am cheating a bit as it never played in theatres (let alone drive-ins), with patrons unwittingly taking home the box art with the mullet-maligned hoser holding a power drill.

The man who calls himself the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be will be co-starring with an '80s child star in an all-new horror movie. Called Tales from the Dead Zone, the new movie will star wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer Bret "The Hitman" Hart alongside Corey Feldman. As an anthology movie, four separate stories will be explored, connected by an overall story arc that wraps them together. It's presented from the point of view of a medical examiner performing autopsies on the victims of a deadly car crash, imagining what their lives must have been like prior to the incident.
Concerning the cast, it appears there are many horror fans not very receptive to the idea of seeing a movie co-starring Bret Hart and Corey Feldman. "We get messages from people, who think it's a disaster," says director Barry J. Gillis.

Horror film The Killing Games has been banned from an international festival because it is "too violent."
Michael Hamm, chairman of the Edmonton International Film Festival in Canada, made the decision after seeing the film at a private screening held by director Barry J. Gillis.
Gillis says he is stunned with the decision because he is a local Edmonton filmmaker and also claims festival organisers broke their own rules by telling him well ahead of the August 7 scheduled announcement date.
Gillis says he also feels that the festival is stopping some local talent from getting some well-needed exposure, including Native American actor Donald A. Morin, who plays Minister Riel in the movie and lives in Edmonton.
"Morin plays a fine role in the film, and they are shutting him out," Gillis said. "Native Americans don't always get the chance to showcase their talents in the way Morin did in this film either.

Canadian filmmaker Barry J. Gillis reports to Dread Central that he's extremely disappointed to hear that his film The Killing Games has been tagged as too violent to screen at the Edmonton International Film Festival, an event that basically takes place in the director's own backyard.
So what does a filmmaker say to a fest that claims his movie is too violent? Well, he can start with "Thank you very friggin' much!" because any film that's tagged with a label like that is sure to garner attention.

Intervision Picture Corp:In 1989, it became the first Canadian shot-on-Super 8 gore shocker commercially released on VHS. Today, it remains perhaps the most bizarre, depraved and mind-boggling chunk of 'Canuxploitaion' ever unleashed upon humanity. Adult film superstar Amber Lynn and co-writer/producer Barry J. It's an inexplicable orgy of eye ripping, beer guzzling, boob baring, skull drilling, sandwich making, chain sawing, bad acting and post-sync dubbing from co-writer/producer/director Andrew Jordan that has spawned its own disturbing cult of fans. Some will be repulsed. Others may be transformed forever. But you have never seen anything like Things.I'm not sure Things can...

Gillis, screenwriter and dude on the cover) and his buddy Fred show up at Doug's house for some drinking. They find the house empty, put their coats in the freezer, crack open a few breskies, admire the classy artwork in Doug's house, and surf channels, marveling at the reception of the "bestiality channel". It's not long before weird things begin to happen and they discover Doug has turned to some unusual methods in order to get his wife pregnant. This turns out to have been a bad idea as they are now sharing the house with the large, insect-like creatures that have emerged from her unholy womb.

Having recently plowed through Intervision’s first release, the obscure 80′s shot-on-video horror flick “Sledgehammer”, I’m pretty much down for whatever the company has to offer. Next up is the forgotten Canuxploitation flick “Things”, which, according to Intervision’s official blog, is the “first Canadian Super 8 gore shocker commercially released on VHS”. Sounds like a winner to me. If it’s anything like “Sledgehammer” — which I fully intend to cover on this site at a later date — I’m sure it will be an instant classic in the Rigney household. Well, in one half of the Rigney household, anyway. Here’s what you can expect from “Things”: Adult film superstar Amber Lynn and co-writer/producer Barry J. Gillis star in this surreal saga about two friends who visit a remote cabin, only to discover a womb of monstrous horror that demands graphic dismemberment. It’s an inexplicable orgy of eye ripping,...

The good people at Intervision Picture Corporation have announced two unique DVD releases scheduled for July 12th, one a twisted little piece of filmmaking from our neighbors to the north and the other based on a famous serial killer.
First up is Things, the 1989 Canadian gorefest starring Amber Lynn and Barry J. Gillis. Things will be resurrected from its VHS roots and reborn on DVD dripping with over four hours of special features for you to sink your teeth into.
And speaking of sinking teeth, also being released on July 12th is The Secret Life: Jeffrey Dahmer, an accurate retelling of the serial killer's gruesome true life tale. This 1993 film is directed by David R. Bowen and stars Carl Crew, who appeared in the 80's cult film Blood Diner.

Intervision Picture Corp is set to release the Super 8 Canadian shocker Things on DVD on July 12th, with some neat extras and a killer cover art (as pictured to the right).
In 1989, it became the first Canadian shot-on-Super 8 gore shocker commercially released on VHS. Today, it remains perhaps the most bizarre, depraved and mind-boggling chunk of ‘Canuxploitaion’ ever unleashed upon humanity. Adult film superstar Amber Lynn and co-writer/producer Barry J. Gillis star in this surreal saga about two friends who visit a remote cabin, only to discover a womb of monstrous horror that demands graphic dismemberment. It’s an inexplicable orgy of eye ripping, beer guzzling, boob baring, skull drilling, sandwich making, chain sawing, bad acting and post-sync dubbing from co-writer/producer/director Andrew Jordan that has spawned its own disturbing cult of fans. Some will be repulsed. Others may be transformed forever. But you have never seen anything like Things.

Written and directed by Canadian film maker Barry J. Gillis, The Killing Games is a sick and twisted new serial killer flick heavily inspired by and built around the true events of the Twitchell murder case, – an amateur filmmaker who allegedly went bloodily berserk in the real world.
Judging by the trailer and poster we’ve just been sent, The Killing Games is most definitely not for the faint of heart or weak of mind… Be aware this is no-holds-barred terror in the greatest exploitation style:

As if Canada hasn’t given us enough in Pam Anderson, Jim Carrey and Peter North, north country filmmaker Barry J. Gillis has tapped the true story of alleged Canuck murder suspect Mark Twitchell for the subject matter of his new film The Killing Games.
