Set in India in the 1920s, the story looks back at the life of an English woman named Olivia who becomes fascinated by India and enamored by the local ruler, a nawab who combines British distinction with Indian pomp and ruthlessness. The film's international cast stars Greta Scacchi, Shashi Kapoor, Julie Christie, Christopher Cazenove, Julian Glover, Susan Fleetwood, Patrick Godfrey, and Jennifer Kendal. When writing a story about history it seems that the easy thing to do is look at religion. It’s a subject that has created such division in society it just screams out plenty of themes for a writer to use and manipulate into an entertaining story. Shadow of the Sword is a perfect example of this.

It takes a time in history when the church was all powerful in Europe and examines how corruption and greed can destroy not only the churches credibility but also the lives and friendships of the people it believes it controls.

Set in the times of the inquisitions, Shadow of the Sword looks at the friendship of two orphan boys Martin and Georg. One is chosen by the church...

Some excellent news from the 37th Boston Science Fiction Film Festival where a film we’ve been following for a while now picked up the Best Film award, a distinction picked up by a certain Duncan Jones a few years ago for Moon.

The film is Dimensions: A Line, A Loop, A Tangle of Threads and it is the results of many years hard work and passion from director Sloane U’Ren and writer Ant Neely, who produced the film together. It deals with a scientist obsessed with the idea of going back in time to revisit a particular moment in his childhood and from the trailer below it looks to be a sumptuous affair.

Inbetweeners fans may recognise the lead actor, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, and he appears alongside Camilla Rutherford, Patrick Godfrey and Olivia Llewellyn. It’s certainly one to keep an eye on – it’ll play in March...

The 25-year-old rapper-turned-actor and star of the film Weekender

Who's this handsome devil then? David Miliband, Shirley Bassey's husband, and the bully from The Inbetweeners. It's Henry Lloyd-Hughes, rapper turned excellent actor.

Rapper? I know, so clean cut, so James Dean-esque, but he has a damn fine singing voice and he also plays the drums, hence the guns.

Phwoar. Stop it. You've seen him in Miliband of Brothers and the BBC's Bassey biopic, but look forward to seeing a whole lot more of him in the future – the "period sci-fi drama" Dimensions, co-starring Camilla Rutherford and Patrick Godfrey; Roland Emmerich's Anonymous, on the life of Shakespeare; and Anna Karenina, opposite Jude Law and Keira Knightley. Our favourite role so far is as a 90s raver in the film Weekender.

Science fiction and period costume drama rarely mix, which is strange because I think the latter can add a sumptuous new layer that we rarely see in scifi. We saw it with The Prestige and on some level I think we see it in Andrew Niccol's films like Gattaca.

A new scifi film from the UK called Dimensions is blending the two genres in a unique story that seems to involve time travel. The film's husband and wife directing duo, Ant Neely & Sloane U.Ren, describe the film as "a cross between H.G. Wells. Time Machine and A Beautiful Mind".
