Muppets creator Jim Henson was delivered a rough hand with two of his most advanced and misunderstood movies. One of these was Labyrinth, and the other was The Dark Crystal. Released in 1982, the film was originally released to mixed reviews and although it did not land as a complete box office disaster, it was by no means a runaway success. Now, the dark fantasy classic has secured the number one spot on Tubi’s free streaming charts.
The Dark Crystal introduces audiences to the mystical world of Thra, where Jen, the last of the Gelflings, is tasked with restoring the balance of the world by retrieving the pieces of the shattered Crystal of Truth. The fragmentation of the crystal has allowed the malevolent Skeksis, a race of vulture-like creatures, to seize control of Thra, and they’ve spread darkness and decay throughout the world. As the last week of December approaches and viewers prepare for the upcoming animated movies of 2025, it's time to look back at the past year for the best animated movies of 2024. While a recent update about the release window of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-verse, the current most-anticipated animated movie, practically confirms that there won't be a release date for another 2 years, 2024 has still been very exciting for animation, with the release of sequels to many beloved franchises.
Every animated movie released in 2024 didn't make as big a stir in the box office or among critics as they were supposed to, but there have been some noteworthy surprise hits. While Kung Fu Panda, Inside Out, Moana, and Despicable Me got anticipated sequels, the Transformers franchise branched out into animation, and The Wild Robot got critical and commercial success beyond what anyone had imagined it would.

Along with the first movie in the animated franchise, there are plenty of movies like Sing 2 that capture the same magic that makes the family-friendly sequel such a gem. Much like its predecessor, Sing 2 is a jukebox musical and features a satirical look at the entertainment industry. This time around, Buster Moon and his friends are organizing another big show to impress a media mogul, which also includes convincing a reclusive rock star to come out of retirement and join them on stage.
The movie is an entertaining bit of fun for all ages, continuing the winning combination of popular music and adorable animal characters. While it has its own charm, there are some other great movies that share similarities fans may find interesting. Whether it is the celebration of underdogs showcasing their talents, the excitement of putting on a big show, or other animated movies with a musical energy,...

Michael Caine would seem like an unlikely Ebenezer Scrooge, but the man nailed it in The Muppet Christmas Carol, delivering what many consider the best version of the character ever, up there with Alastair Sim and George C. Scott. And to channel the most miserly of misers against the most Muppety of Muppets, Caine did the unexpected: he went Shakespearan and Hannibal Lecter.
Michael Caine can be terribly funny, but to play Scrooge, he knew he had to go a different route to not only match the character but to play against some off of the Muppets. As recounted in The Guardian, Caine said, “I’m going to play this movie like I’m working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I will never wink, I will never do anything Muppety. I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role and there are no puppets around me.

2024 might not have been the biggest year for cinema, but it offered Disney a success story. Following a disappointing 2023, a year the House of Mouse celebrated its 100th anniversary, Disney is now ruling other studios again.
Per Deadline, Disney has reached a major milestone as it became the only studio to reach $2 billion at the domestic box office. Last year, Disney had a string of celebratory films for its 100th anniversary, including Wish, The Haunted Mansion, Pixar's Elemental, and Marvel's Ant-Man and the Quantumania and The Marvels, as well as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Unfortunately, last year registered more losses for Disney, but 2024 came with a lot of magic.

Further proving that every work of literature would be vastly improved by the presence of the Muppets, 1992’s The Muppet Christmas Carol adapted Charles Dickens’ classic yuletide tale for the likes of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Gonzo the Great. Oh, and also Sir Michael Caine.
As much as we all love this movie, each seasonal rewatch brings with it the moment where we suddenly remember just how disturbingly creepy the Ghost of Christmas Past looks. It’s like a Christopher Walken deepfake of a haunted porcelain doll.

Works of dark fantasy that border on being considered horror movies are a vital part of the genre. Not only are these films thrilling and exciting to watch, but they also tackle taboo subjects and deal with the more complex and murky aspects of the human experience. Filmmakers must grapple with the grotesque and violent as much as they do the happy and magical parts of fantasy. Using the genre solely as a means of escapism is a failure, as fantasy and other works of speculative fiction have the opportunity to take on some of the biggest issues facing society.

The first three episodes of What We Do in the Shadows season 6 offer a glimpse at the final season of FX's vampire comedy. While they set up multiple storylines that are likely to stretch across the 11-episode season, the most important is the awakening of Jerry (Mike O'Brien), a former roommate of the mockumentary series' Staten Island-based immortals who went into a "super-slumber" in the mid-1970s. Though they promised to wake him up in the '90s, they predictably forgot all about him, and his re-entry into their lives reminds them of forgotten dreams and desires from their pasts.

Inside Out 2's lineup of deleted emotions gets longer with new reveals from the head creatives. Writer Meg LeFauve dropped another candidate that didn't make the cut, and it's an emotion that would've paired well with Shame.
Writer Meg LeFauve revealed Inside Out 2 almost featured another villain: Schadenfreude, and he's unique because he causes other people to feel anxiety or shame. "Schadenfreude came in and out pretty quick," she told The Direct. "He was really fun. It's a German word for an emotion where you laugh at people's pain. Which is very teenager-y because you don't have a frontal lobe, and it's why we all laugh at pratfalls. Because somebody falls, we laugh; it's funny, right? But why does our brain do that? That's Schadenfreude. But he didn't make it."

Animated sequels rarely live up to the standards of the original, especially since many animated classics are left as standalone movies. It's only in the 21st century that animated sequels have become more popular. Before this shift, animated movies were either left untouched or given direct-to-video sequels with little fanfare, as was the case with many Disney classics. The landscape of animated movies is much different now.
The 21st century has seen the rise of long-running animated franchises such as Shrek, Toy Story and Kung Fu Panda. Still, sequels can be tricky business, with studios struggling to come up with storylines as vibrant as those in the original movies. However, there are some exceptions where a sequel can strike upon a brilliant idea. In these cases, some sequels can even improve upon the animated classics which inspired them.

VFX artists at Corridor Crew rave about the visual effects in The Great Muppet Caper, calling them "such a flex" and very clever. They give an analysis of a scene where Miss Piggy and Kermit ride a bike with seamless effects. Despite mixed reviews upon its release in 1981, The Great Muppet Caper has gained acclaim over the years for its clever use of VFX.
Jim Hensons 1981 film The Great Muppet Caper gets a rave review from VFX artists. This musical heist comedy, which serves as Hensons feature directorial debut, follows Kermit the Frog, The Great Gonzo, and Fozzie Bear, three Muppet reporters who journey to London to investigate the disappearance of a missing, expensive jewel. Henson himself, Frank Oz, and Dave Goelz play the three Muppet characters respectively, and are joined by other names like Richard Hunt, Louise Gold, and Jerry Nelson.

Pixar Animation often brings in some of the best voice talent in the business for the animated features, even if it's just for bit parts. For example, the original "Inside Out" featured the voices of Frank Oz and Dave Goelz as a pair of bickering subconscious guards inside Riley's mind. Oz is probably best known for bringing life to Yoda in the "Star Wars" saga, but he was also behind beloved Muppets like Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy, as well as "Sesame Street" characters like Grover and Bert. Meanwhile, Goelz is known for playing Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew in various Muppets productions over the years. Both of them return with small parts as Mind Cops in "Inside Out 2," and if director Kelsey Mann had his way, there would have been one more legendary contribution to "Sesame Street" and the Muppets making an appearance.

Riley (Kensington Tallman), the little girl audiences were first introduced to in 2015’s Inside Out, is navigating typical teenage life in Inside Out 2. Early in the film, she gets invited to an advanced hockey tryout at her soon-to-be-new high school with her two besties, only to find out that they aren’t going to the same school, and that the badass jock girls at the new school are bigger, stronger, and cooler. While it’d be nice if she knew how to deal with that in an emotionally mature way, unfortunately, she’s literally got a lot more on her mind.
When we last saw her in the original film, Riley had one core group of anthropomorphic emotions running around the crystalline control center in her head, guiding her decisions: Joy (Amy Pohler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust, and Fear. After the big red puberty alarm goes off,...

Inside Out 2 co-writer Dave Holstein and director Kelsey Mann opened up about the creative process behind developing Rileys Belief System in the highly-anticipated animated sequel. Rileys Belief System is expected to become one of the "core elements" of the upcoming movie.
During a recent interview with Empire, Holstein and Mann believed that introducing Rileys Belief System would be giving fans "the emotional hit" that was lacking from the first installment. "Now that Rileys a teenager, shes starting to develop her own set of beliefs," Mann explained. "What if we actually hear Riley say her beliefs in her own voice? If you hear her say, Im kind,' you can hear [in] the performance how she feels about that. Or, 'My parents are proud of me.' On the flip-side, if theres a belief thats not so good, you can really hear the emotion of it."

Maya Hawke as Anxiety: A bundle of frazzled energy, Anxiety enthusiastically ensures Riley’s prepared for every possible negative outcome. The first "Pigs in Space" segment of "The Muppet Show" occurred in the third episode of the show's second season, the one hosted by Milton Berle. "Pigs in Space" sought to lampoon all of the most popular sci-fi tropes of the day, most notably "Star Trek," which was exploding in popularity at the time thanks to endless syndication deals. The segments took place on board a pig-shaped vessel called the Swinetrek, which was commanded by the handsome Captain Link Hogthrob (Jim Henson). Miss Piggy (Frank Oz) played First Mate Piggy, and the ship's chief medical officer was Dr. Strangepork (Jerry Nelson). The "Pigs in Space" segment was so popular, it appeared in 32 episodes of "The Muppet Show" through its fifth season. The segment was revived for the short-lived 1997 series "Muppets Tonight," where it was called "Pigs in Space: Deep Dish Nine: The Next Generation of Pigs in Space."

The Electric Mayhem Band is breaking up after Disney+ canceled its latest Muppets show.
The streamer has axed live-action series The Muppets Mayhem, which comes from The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, after one season.
The ten-part series was released in May but Disney+ never disclosed any ratings for the show.
The cancellation marks a blow for plans for a wider Muppetverse; Goldberg previously expressed interest in branching out using the classic IP, which includes some of Disney’s most recognizable characters.
It is the latest cancelation at Disney+ this year; other shows to have been axed include The Spiderwick Chronicles, which has since been shopped to Roku, National Treasure, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., Willow, Big Shot and Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.
Developed and written by Goldberg and Muppets veteran Bill Barretta and Jeff Yorkes, the series followed The Electric Mayhem Band as they went on an epic musical journey...
