Queen Sugar ends tonight on OWN, and series creator Ava DuVernay has discussed the series finale in an interview with Deadline. The show premiered in 2016 and wraps this evening after seven seasons with a special 90-minute episode.

Starring Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Kofi Siriboe, Nicholas Ashe, Tina Lifford, Omar J. Dorsey, and Bianca Lawson, the series is based on the novel by Natalie Baszile. The story follows the adult Bordelon siblings of Louisiana who try to save the family sugarcane farm after a tragedy. Netflix and Blumhouse have parted ways with Lexi Alexander’s “Absolute Dominion,” a sci-fi martial arts film led by Patton Oswalt, Alex Winter and Julie Ann Emery.

An insider confirmed that Netflix will no longer distribute the film, while Blumhouse is no longer attached as a producer. Though the decision wasn’t easy, said the insider, they support Alexander finding another distributor.

Set in 2085, the movie centers on a futuristic martial arts tournament in which the victor wins absolute dominion for one religion. Greenlit by Netflix in April of this year, the Nevada shoot wrapped in August and the film is now in post-production.

Writer-director-producer Alexander did not directly comment on the decision. However, she retweeted the news with the message “Don’t worry, it’s not bad news. But here are the leads…” above images of four cast members.

We don't have to wonder if Queen Sugar will be cancelled this time around. OWN has already revealed that the series is ending and won't have an eighth year. Could viewership surge in the final year and inspire the cable channel to revive Queen Sugar? Stay tuned.

It’s nearly time for “Queen Sugar” fans to “take flight” one last time, as we prepare to say goodbye to the Bordelon family.

OWN has released the official trailer for the seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama, created by Ava DuVernay and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 6.

“If we do not honor our past, we dishonor our future. Listen,” says Rutina Wesley’s Nova, the eldest Bordelon sibling, as the clip begins, previewing the tense and tender scenes that will play out over the next 13 episodes.

Ava DuVernay will direct the series finale of “Queen Sugar,” OWN has announced.

DuVernay, created the drama series an executive produces, returns to the director’s chair of the show for the first time since Season 1, when she helmed the first two episodes. Since the first season, DuVernay has written for the series a handful of times, with her last credit being as one of four writers on the penultimate episode of Season 6, which aired last fall. Production for the final episode has already begun in New Orleans.

In addition, OWN also announced the rest of directors for the seventh and final season of the show. The series notably has exclusively featured female directors over the course of its run, with 39 of the 42 directors hire to helm episodes being first time scripted television directors. Queen Sugar creator and executive producer Ava DuVernay, who directed the pilot, will return to direct the series’ final episode. Production on the seventh and final season has begun in and around New Orleans.

DuVernay will wrap up seven seasons of an all-women directorial team for OWN’s award-winning drama series. In addition to DuVernay, season 7 directors include Kat Candler, Stacey Muhammad, showrunner Shaz Bennett, Patricia Cardoso, Aurora Guerrero and DeMane Davis.

When Queen Sugar first began production in 2016, DuVernay made a commitment to exclusively hire women as directors, and kept that promise through the entire series run. Over the course of its seven seasons, Queen Sugar has employed 42 women to direct episodes of the show, with 39 of those being first-time scripted television directors in the United States.

Kaci Walfall will reunite with Naomi co-creator Ava DuVernay by way of a guest-starring role during the farewell run of the prolific producer’s Queen Sugar.

The OWN family drama’s end point was announced back in November, when it was renewed for a seventh and final season. “To everything, there is a season,” series creator DuVernay said at the time in a statement. “And my producing partner Paul Garnes and I have had seven gorgeous seasons making Queen Sugar with a remarkable cast and crew, alongside our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. Television.”

Suzzanne Douglas, who starred in Robert Townsend’s WB ’90s sitcom The Parent ‘Hood and most recently appeared in Ava DuVernay’s 2019 Netflix miniseries When They See Us, died yesterday at the age of 64. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Douglas’ death was announced on Facebook by her cousin Angie Tee.

“Suzzanne Douglas a beautiful and talented actress made her transition today,” Tee wrote. “She warmed our hearts on movie screens and television sets all over the world…The world will miss your talent but your soul will live on forever.”

DuVernay remembered Douglas as “a quiet, elegant force.”

“A gentlewoman,” DuVernay wrote on Twitter early this morning. “A gem of a lady. A confident, caring actor who breathed life into the words and made them shimmer. I’m grateful that our paths in this life crossed. May she journey on in peace and love.”

Jon M. Chu’s long-awaited film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” should have debuted to critical acclaim. While former ESPN commentator Jemele Hill hasn’t seen “Bombshell,” she still commented on its unimpressive box office showing on Twitter Thursday.

“I wouldn’t see this movie if the fate of humanity depended on it. Pains me to say that because I love the three lead actresses,” Hill tweeted on Thursday. “Fox News is a destructive, despicable force. Did they ever consider that the reputation of the network and Roger Ailes was too toxic?”

While “Bombshell” stars Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and Charlize Theron as three Fox News employees taking on the culture of the company under the now-disgraced Roger Ailes (played by John Lithgow), the timely subject matter and star-studded cast didn’t equal a box office smash. The film premiered on Dec. 20 and has generated $19.6 million domestically as of Jan. 2, on an estimated $32 million budget .

Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight (pictured) won a record four awards at the Independent Filmmaker Project Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York on Monday.

The acclaimed drama, which last week got six Film Independent Spirit Award nominations, won the Gotham Award for best feature and its script, with a story by Tarell Alvin McCraney and a screenplay by Jenkins, won in the screenplay category.

The film also won the Gotham Audience Award and cast members Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Alex Hibbert, André Holland, Jharrel Jerome, Janelle Monáe, Jaden Piner, Trevante Rhodes and Ashton Sanders were presented with the previously announced Special Jury for Ensemble Performance.

Kicking off the onslaught of awards this year, as always, is the Gotham Independent Film Awards, which celebrates its 26th anniversary. Usually a strong slate highlighting some of the year’s best films, 2016 is no different as Manchester by the Sea leads the pack with four nominations. Close behind is Moonlight (which will also pick up a special ensemble award) and Paterson with three each overall.

Rounding out the Best Feature line-up, along with the three aforementioned films, is Certain Women and Everybody Wants Some!!. As for the Best Documentary line-up, Cameraperson, I Am Not Your Negro, O.J.: Made in America, Tower, and Weiner all made the cut. While some of the other Fox animated shows have already been renewed for next season, The Cleveland Show hasn't. Last May, Fox decided to delay making a decsion. Could this Family Guy spin-off be cancelled due to low ratings? We'll have to wait and see.

20th Century Fox Television has announced its 2012 Comic-Con schedule, which we therefore present to you here. Not that they’re offering much that we cover here at SciFi Mafia, except for one of my top two shows. Hey Wait A Minute – Argh! No American Horror Story! Well, given that they’ll probably be shooting, and that Ryan Murphy has indicated that he’d like to keep as much of it under wraps as possible, that’s probably not a huge surprise, though it is a disappointment.

We already learned about the Fringe panel from Warner Bros last Thursday, and… that’s it for us with Fox, except for Futurama which is also produced by 20th Century Fox Television. But for those of you who watch shows that we don’t usually cover here, well, here you go:

A day after Warner Bros. TV announced its lineup for Comic-Con 2012, 20th Century Fox has revealed the shows and stars from its stable of programs that will be featured throughout the dizzying weekend of panels and press rooms.

More studios will come out with their schedules in the coming days, but it's worth noting: Fox is Not bringing Glee to Comic-Con this year.

Fox has decided to delay making a decision on the future of The Cleveland Show. On the positive side, viewers aren't likely to notice -- at least for awhile -- because of a backlog of episodes.

A spin-off of Family Guy, The Cleveland Show revolves around Peter Griffin's pal, Cleveland Brown (Mike Henry), who moves back to his hometown in Virginia to get married. The animated series also stars the voices of Sanaa Lathan, Kevin Michael Richardson, Seth MacFarlane, Nia Long, Jason Sudeikis, Seth Green, Arianna Huffington, Alec Sulkin, John Viener, Reagan Gomez-Preston, and Aaron Krebs.

Fox gave the show a 13 episode greenlight in May 2008, eying a mid-season 2008-09 launch. In November 2008, Fox ordered additional nine episodes, bringing the first season total to 22.

Larry King is a legend. And who wouldn't want a private sit-down interview with a legend?    I didn't expect, though, that my opportunity to chat up Larry King would occur when I was expecting to be talking to "The Cleveland Show" stars Kevin Michael Richardson and Reagan Gomez.   Richardson, one of the contemporary titans of voice-over work (and a fine live-action actor as well), was in fine form when we met last week for a conversation that included tidbits on this season of "The Cleveland Show" as well as his apparent audition for one of the wackiest body-swapping comedies...

The Cleveland Show Season 2 follows everyone's favorite soft spoken neighbor, Cleveland Brown (Mike Henry), as he settles into married life with his high school sweetheart and their blended family in his hometown of Stoolbend, Va. The Cleveland Show may not be the favored offspring of Seth MacFarlane's Animation Domination, but you will believe in its fanbase when the cast and creators come ot San Diego Comic-Con 2011!

MacFarlane himself won't actually be on hand with the rest of the panel, which takes place Sunday, July 24th from 1:45 - 2:45pm in Hall H, as we've previously mentioned his absence for both the Family Guy and American Dad panels.  Guess we'll be in for a big Flintstones panel next year!

So what might we see from The Cleveland Show's third season at the panel?  New footage seems likely, and fans of the show will definitely be treated to some of the highlights sequence from season two finale "Hot Cocoa Bang Bang," which itself took place at San Diego Comic-Con.  Did someone say live-action battle between Kevin Smith and Harry Knowles for a corn dog?...

Over the weekend, San Diego Comic-Con announced the programming schedule for Saturday and Sunday at this year's convention. Usually, Saturday is the most impressive day as it's the weekend and has the biggest amount of people coming into the area while Sunday is usually the most unexciting day as it's the final day of the event and everything is winding down. For 2011, each day is going in the opposite direction. Saturday's movie programming is very underwhelming, save for a few films like Snow White and the Huntsman and Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt, with more cool TV panels popping up than usual. Sunday is significantly better than usual, especially if you like TV, with Hall H panels on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Glee and more. Sunday at San Diego Comic Con 2011 will be the day for gleek. Fox will hold a panel for its musical series "Glee" on July 24, during which a sneak peek to "Glee The 3D Concert Movie" will be shared. The network will additionally present a panel for its new animated comedy "Allen Gregory".

"Supernatural" panel will also take place on the last day of the convention. It will mark the first-time ever the CW series holds a presentation in Hall H. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are set to attend the event along with other cast members to present a sneak peek to the seventh season.

Also possibly attracting attendees are presentation for "Merlin" and "Sons of Anarchy" as well "Castle" panel, which will feature its lead star Nathan Fillion. Fans of animated works such as "The Cleveland Show", "Scooby-Doo" and "The Looney Tunes" can also expect sneak peeks to the shows on Sunday.

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

Comic-Con is a month away and things have been fairly quiet. That’s about to change because The Hollywood Reporter landed the list of television shows that will be present at the con of all cons.
