Apple TV+’s latest series order will explore the world of high-end art, with two A-list stars attached.
Jessica Chastain and Adam Driver will star in The Dealer, which the streamer landed with a straight-to-series pickup following a bidding war with several other outlets. The two leads will also be executive producers. The show hails from The Morning Show and Pachinko producer Media Res and will be executive produced by Tony Award-nominated playwright Lucas Hnath, Sam Gold and Sarah Lunnie, all of whom collaborated on Hnath’s play A Doll’s House, Part 2.
The Dealer is described as “a biting exploration of power, class, seduction and culture set inside the glittering world of the high-end art market, told through the eyes of an aspiring super gallerist (Chastain) and the tangled relationship with her most gifted and unnerving artist (Driver).”

Disney+ UK is about more than Marvel and Star Wars stuff. Here’s a bunch of underappreciated films on the service.

“In the Lost Lands” director Paul W.S. Anderson is used to his movies getting released, being under-appreciated and then finding their audience years — or sometimes decades — later.
“I’m British, we are used to considering ourselves being rubbish,” Anderson said. But he is aware that even movies considered flops do sometimes come back in a big way. “You release the movie and no one likes it and then 10 years later they go, ‘That was a great movie.’ Could you not have told me that 10 years ago?” he added.
Anderson started his career in England. He made the low-budget thriller “Shopping” in 1994 which starred a then-unknown Jude Law. The British press was ruthless. Anderson still remembers that one outlet branded the film “a reckless orgy of destruction.” “That was supposed to be a criticism and I loved it so much that we stuck it on the poster,” Anderson said. It was a source of pride.

It didn’t take long after the conclusion of The Twilight Sagafor Robert Pattinsonto prove that he was a truly experimental actor who was willing to risk embarrassment by playing oddball characters; by teaming up with acclaimed filmmakers like David Cronenberg, the Safdie Brothers, Robert Eggers, Claire Denis, and James Gray among others, Pattinson has been able to prove that he is much more of a chameleon-like character actor than a traditional heartthrob. Although Pattinson has done great work playing offbeat weirdos in films like Damsel and The Devil All The Time, it's still within the confines of rather serious stories, in which his performance is intended to be the outlier. Mickey 17finally gives Pattinson the opportunity to do a straight-up comedy, and the brave performance that he gave proved to be perfect for the idiosyncratic vision of Bong Joon Ho.

Believe it or not, once upon a time, Robert Pattinson was not considered a top-notch actor. Sad but true! To be fair, there were a lot of mitigating factors surrounding this, chief among them the fact that he exploded onto the scene as the male lead in the "Twilight" saga, finding himself at the epicenter of that dubious pop-cultural phenomenon. Despite hordes of screaming young fans going wild for the English actor based on his beauty, the dismissal of Pattinson by snooty folks at the time helped teach us a valuable lesson later, one which we keep failing to learn: teen girls do tend to have good taste.
After all, almost immediately following his tenure in the "Twilight" films, Pattinson used his newfound clout to become a star to be reckoned with. He doubled down on a collaboration with the cerebral Canadian provocateur David Cronenberg, appearing in both "Cosmopolis" and "Maps to the Stars.

With Anne Hathaway, Adam Driver and Jeremy Strong on board, James Gray’s Paper Tiger is about to start filming.
James Gray has a filmography that includes the likes of Ad Astra and The Lost City Of Z. He has appeared in a special episode of our podcast too. His latest film, 2022’s Armageddon Time, was an absorbing coming-of-age film set in New York in the 1980s.
The filmmaker is turning his creativity towards the crime genre next, having scripted Paper Tiger, his next directorial outing. Furthermore, he’s bringing two actors from Armageddon Time into his next project, with Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong set to star in the new movie.

Two Years Before ‘The Apprentice,’ Jeremy Strong Starred in Another Movie Featuring the Trump Family
When tackling the thorniest and most complicated subjects of contemporary American life in film, we must call in the services of our most fearless actor, Jeremy Strong. Following his tour de force on HBO as the heir apparent to CEO of Waystar Royco in Succession, Strong quickly announced himself as a perennial film actor with his equally triumphant and mesmerizing performance in The Apprentice. While the film was treated as a hot-buttoned, inflammatory look at Donald Trump, released about a month before he was elected President of the United States, it was Strong's performance as Roy Cohn that stole the show. Two years earlier, Strong also dabbled in commentary on the Trump family in Armageddon Time, an overlooked coming-of-age drama that looks at the family more abstractly, but James Gray's film is just as biting.

Jeremy Strong, star of the HBO hit series Succession and recent first-time Oscar nominee, is set to play a Nazi hunter in a new adaptation of the conspiracy thriller novel The Boys from Brazil, according to a report from Deadline.
The Netflix series will be executive produced by The Crown showrunner Peter Morgan. Strong will play Yakov Liebermann, the lead character loosely based on real-life Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. The role was previously portrayed by Laurence Olivier in a 1978 feature adaptation of the novel.
The story chronicles Liebermann's attempts to uncover a secret project launched by notorious Nazi officer Josef Mengele, who was nicknamed "the Angel of Death" due to his sinister experiments during the Holocaust. In the novel, Mengele has successfully planted dozens of genetic clones of Adolf Hitler in an attempt to rebuild the Third Reich.

Hollywood icon Ke Huy Quan-led Love Hurts and Josh Ruben's Heart Eyesopen strong but still can't outpace Dog Man.
Per Variety, DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man is still dominating the box office in its second weekend in theaters, even in spite of the releases of both the action comedy Love Hurts starring Ke Huy Quan and director Josh Ruben's new slasher comedy, Heart Eyes. Few Hollywood stars have had quite as wild of a career trajectory as Mark Wahlberg, who managed to erase his pop star persona entirely by working alongside brilliant filmmakers like James Gray, Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, and David O. Russell. Although Wahlberg has spent the last few years making streaming films within the action, comedy, and family genres, he has also grown more active as a producer behind projects that speak to his own interest in activist causes. It is evident that religion is something he takes seriously, as Wahlberg gave one of his most transformative performances as a priestin the biographical drama Father Stu, which served as one of his first collaborations with Mel Gibson.

James Gray is a filmmaker who has consistently shown an ability to capture human frailty, regardless of the genre that he is working in. Although he made a science fiction epic with Ad Astra, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story with Armageddon Time, and a haunting mafia thriller with We Own The Night, Gray has managed to examine complex, relatable characters with every film that he has directed. The prospect of Gray making an adventure film was somewhat surprising, as he is not exactly a filmmaker that seemed well-suited to making a swashbuckling crowd-pleaser like Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Princess Bride. However, The Lost City of Z is a harrowing epic about a real discovery mission that went awry and deserves to be heralded as one of the best films of the 21st century.

Wedding bells are stinging (sorry) in a new action comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Dave Bautista. Jonathan Tropper, who wrote 2014's This is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project in 2022 (and was the creator and showrunner of Banshee) is scripting the new film for Amazon MGM Studios and Agbo. Maura Delpero’s lushly told, moving mountainside World War II epic “Vermiglio” kept a low profile at the 2024 Venice Film Festival as one of a handful of Italian films in the competition. To some’s surprise — only because most eyes were on quote-unquote buzzier films like “The Brutalist” and “Babygirl” and “Queer” — this story of a repressed rural community upended by the arrival of a handsome stranger (Giuseppe De Domenico) won the Silver Lion prize, second only to the Golden Lion, from the jury led by Isabelle Huppert. Now, “Vermiglio” represents Italy in the 2025 Best International Feature Film Oscar race — and should land a spot on next week’s shortlist after nods from the Gothams and Golden Globes.

“Have you ever wondered what makes a Christmas story a Christmas story?”
This is the underlying question to the Disney+ short film An Almost Christmas Story, and producer Alfonso Cuarón heartily laughs at the notion that he and director David Lowery were trying to settle the age-old debate about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not. The 24-minute animated short — Cuarón’s third-and-final installment in his holiday collection that dates back to 2022 — is based on the true story of an owl that was rescued from the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas tree in 2020. Cuarón’s story, in tandem with Lowery and Jack Thorne’s script, teaches their young owl named Moon (Cary Christopher) what Christmas is as he seeks to reunite with his family.

Exclusive: Here’s a hot package coming together quickly: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to direct an untitled AI thriller for T-Street Productions, the production company of Rian Johnson & Ram Bergman, with Anne Hathaway to star, sources tell Deadline.
No word on plot details yet, but we hear Gordon-Levitt wrote the script with Kieran Fitzgerald, who previously co-wrote his 2016 Oliver Stone movie Snowden. Both share ‘story by’ credit with Natasha Lyonne, the star of Johnson’s hit human-lie-detector series Poker Face for Peacock.
The project is the latest in a long line of collaborations for Gordon-Levitt, Johnson, and T-Street. Gordon-Levitt’s friendship and creative partnership with Johnson dates back to the latter’s 2005 directorial debut Brick, a high school neo-noir starring Gordon-Levitt, which is now a cult classic. Subsequently, Gordon-Levitt went on to star as a younger version of Bruce Willis in Johnson’s sci-fi actioner Looper, later guest starring on Poker Face.

Acclaimed cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema can now add a viral short film to his résumé.
The “Oppenheimer” Oscar winner, who is known for his Christopher Nolan collaborations with additional features “Interstellar,” “Tenet,” and “Dunkirk,” has shot a Volvo commercial for the brand with director Marcus Ibanez. Van Hoytema has also previously collaborated with Spike Jonze, James Gray, and Jordan Peele.
In the ad titled “Meet the new Volvo EX90,” the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer captures a woman whose life flashes before her eyes as she’s crossing the street and a Volvo driver narrowly misses running her over.
The tagline reads, “Sometimes the moments that never happen matter the most.”
Van Hoytema previously told IndieWire that he constantly is trying to reinvigorate the language of cinema.
“To a certain extent, I am always trying to come up with something new in my own eyes, but work methods are like tics,” Van Hoytema said.

Judging by the shocked faces on the European buyers and sellers attending the recent American Film Market in Las Vegas, the U.S. election didn’t end the way they had hoped. On the morning after, the most common reaction heard around the Palms Casino, where the conference took place, was “Wtf” (or a variation of) along with an eagerness to board a return flight home.
Whatever the opinions of Donald Trump across the Atlantic, the new political order could prove a
boon to Europe’s creative industries, which have flourished thanks to government-backed incentives and an exodus of U.S. talent to the Continent.
If anything, the election outcome crystallizes a shift in the way America is perceived abroad, one that has made Europe a land of opportunity for talent.

Anne Hathaway is continuing her literary adaptation empire at Amazon MGM Studios. And this time, Hathaway is swapping rom-coms for psychosexual thrillers, bringing Colleen Hoover’s “Verity” to the screen.
Hathaway reunites with her “The Idea of You” director Michael Showalter for the feature, which is written by “The Act” and “A Friend of the Family” creator Nick Antosca.
“Verity” centers on struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, who agrees to complete the remaining books in a successful series that bestselling thriller author Verity Crawford is unable to finish after a mysterious accident. Hathaway will play the reclusive titular Verity, whose latest unfinished manuscript includes chilling admissions about Verity and her family’s past. Per the logline, Lowen has to determine if Verity is a gifted fictionist or deranged psychopath.
No other casting has been announced yet for the roles of Lowen and Verity Crawford’s husband Jeremy Crawford.

What happens in Vegas… heads back to Los Angeles.
After just one year of the American Film Market (AFM) relocating to Las Vegas instead of Santa Monica, seven of the top sales agencies are telling — not asking — the market’s organizers that they will not return to Sin City. And if AFM won’t move back to Los Angeles, they’re already making other arrangements.
It’s an existential moment for what’s been a keystone event for the indie film industry. For organizer IFTA — the Independent Film & Television Alliance — it’s an existential crisis.
This year’s AFM wrapped November 10 at the Palms in Vegas. Attendance wasn’t the issue; Vegas was. Sources told IndieWire that most attendees hated the venue, thought food and accommodations were “gross,” the hotel charged $700 to rent a coffee machine, and massive lines at the elevators made film buyers late for meetings. Christopher Nolans Interstellar is one of the best sci-fi movies of the 2010s, and though others tried to repeat its success, theres only one other space movie that truly feels like a spiritual successor to it. Christopher Nolan has done a bit of everything in his career as a filmmaker, with his works being best-known for the recurrent themes he addresses in them. Nolans movies often touch on the topics of time, personal identity, and memory, and in 2014, he took these and others a step further in Interstellar.

$700 dollars to rent a coffee machine?
There were many topics of conversation at this year’s AFM, not least the market’s seismic switch from Santa Monica to Las Vegas and the (slightly more) seismic matter of the U.S. presidential elections, which just so happened to coincide with the first day of the event (in the swing swate of Nevada) on Nov. 5.
But there was also the matter of the various costs involved, including the somewhat eye-watering amount companies were being asked to pay should they want to offer guests coffee in their already expensively rented office rooms in the Palms.
Few sales companies Variety spoke made the splurge. Several — which shall not be named here — snuck their own machines in. Others stuck to water (a small bottle of which was going for about $6.50 in one hotel lobby).
But hideously expensive beverages are all well and good if buyers...

Zendaya and Anne Hathaway are joining Christopher Nolan’s next film at Universal, alongside previously announced cast members Tom Holland and Matt Damon.
Nolan is writing and directing the movie, which is set for a theatrical and Imax release on July 17, 2026. Plot details are currently under wraps. Universal had no comment on the casting.
It’s a reunion for Hathaway and Nolan, who previously collaborated on the 2014 space epic “Interstellar” and 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” Earlier this year, Hathaway expressed gratitude for Nolan, who cast her in “Interstellar” amidst a wave of online hate following her Oscar win for “Les Misérables.” “A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online,” Hathaway told Vanity Fair. “I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles...

A real-life astronaut rates the accuracy of a scene from Brad Pitt's 2019 science fiction movie Ad Astra and points out a major error. Directed by James Gray, Ad Astra holds an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing. The film follows Roy McBride, an astronaut who embarks on a mission to Neptune to discover what happened to his missing father. In addition to Pitt, Ad Astra's cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, and Donald Sutherland.

Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway are teaming up for Paper Tiger, an upcoming crime movie by director James Gray. Gray's most recent film, Armageddon Time, also starred Hathaway and briefly courted awards buzz in 2022. Ever since his Venice Silver Lion winning first movie Little Odessa way back in 1995, James Gray has time and again proved himself one of America's most introspective, thoughtful filmmakers. From the railroad drama of The Yards, to inner and outer Odyssean epic The Lost City Of Z, to space bound father-son fictive Ad Astra, Gray's movies are always worth paying close attention to. Now, having made perhaps his most personal film yet in the shape of 2022's Armageddon Time, the auteur is reuniting with his leads from that picture and welcoming a new face into the Gray fray for his latest. Per Deadline's reporting, Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong are set to star alongside Adam Driver in Paper Tiger, an original crime thriller directed and penned by Gray himself.

Five years since its release, Ad Astra has split audiences and critics alike, but it deserves a lot more love. The sci-fi drama stars Brad Pitt as an astronaut who is recruited to contact his father, a rogue commander searching for signs of intelligent extraterrestrial life while orbiting Neptune. It received mixed reviews when it was released, and its $135.4 million box office take constituted a disappointment, given its budget and marketing costs.
Ad Astra isn't what some people thought it would be. It isn't a fast-paced action thriller, nor is it a twisty, cerebral sci-fi story. However, just because Ad Astra surprised audiences with its slow pace and quiet character-based drama, it doesn't deserve to be forgotten. While it looked like James Gray was going to follow up Armageddon Time with either a John F. Kennedy biopic or the ghost story Ezekiel Moses, one of America’s great filmmakers will be instead shifting gears to a new project.
Gray will next direct Paper Tiger, based on his own script, with a cast led by Adam Driver and Armageddon Time stars Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway. With production kicking off early next year, Paper Tiger is described as a tense and gritty story of two brothers who pursue the American Dream, only to become entangled in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true. As they try to navigate their way through an ever-more dangerous world of corruption and violence, they find themselves and their family brutally terrorized by the Russian “Mafiya.” Their bond begins to fray, and betrayal—once utterly unthinkable—now becomes all too possible.

It's a big casting day in Hollywood, but this might be the biggest and juiciest story so far as James Gray has assembled a sensational leading trio for his crime drama thriller, as per an exclusive report by Deadline. The outlet is reporting that Oscar nominee Adam Driver, Emmy and Tony winner Jeremy Strong and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway have all signed on to Gray's next film, Paper Tiger, which is set to go out for sale at next week's American Film Market. The genre is reminiscent of Gray's previous gritty and grounded thrillers Little Odessa and We Own The Night. The movie is set to begin shooting in the first quarter of 2025.
