The beloved “Star Wars” sequel “The Empire Strikes Back” is set to open this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival on April 24, with director George Lucas presenting the film for its 45th anniversary.
“’The Empire Strikes Back’ is like ‘The Godfather Part II.’ Yes, technically, they’re sequels, the second movie in a series. But they are so much more,” TCM’s primetime anchor Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “The first ‘Star Wars’ picture in 1977 ignited a new era in Hollywood and turned a generation of young people into passionate movie fans for life. Then, somehow, three years later, along comes ‘Empire,’ which might even be better. It’s a stunning accomplishment and surely stands one of the great achievements in the history of film.”
Additional titles that will screen at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival include “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “The Lady Eve,” “Cinderella,” “Apocalypse Now,...

The Log Lady was a beloved part of “Twin Peaks.” But Catherine Coulson was much more than that. She was a fan favorite who made time to speak with series enthusiasts and helped perpetuate its lore, as well as a longtime actor with Ashland’s Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a camera assistant who pulled focus for David Lynch, John Cassavetes and Albert Brooks.
Coulson made “everyone who was close to her feel like they were her best friend,” says Richard Green, director of “I Know Catherine, The Log Lady,” a feature-length documentary that screens at Ojai’s Playhouse Theatre Saturday with a Q&a from “Twin Peaks” co-creator Mark Frost.
Several of those friends were involved in making the doc, which ends with the dramatic story of the last few days of Coulson’s life, as Lynch and company raced against her rapidly progressing lung cancer to include her in...

"Batman: The Animated Series" wound up being as definitive an account of the Dark Knight as its title suggested. So when a new Batman cartoon finally came afterwards, it was destined to never escape the shadow of "Btas." But "The Batman" (which aired from 2004 to 2008) made a noble effort and remains one of the more unique spins on the Caped Crusader.
"The Batman," developed by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi, was the first animated Batman in 12 years that was unconnected to the DC Animated Universe (The shared setting that began with "Batman: The Animated Series" and concluded with "Justice League Unlimited").
Bruce Wayne in "The Batman" was voiced by Rino Romano, and Joker by Kevin Michael Richardson, rather than the beloved Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker duo. Bruce Timm modeled "Batman: The Animated Series" on the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons, while Jeff Matsuda gave Gotham City an anime makeover.

It was October of 1987 and I was saving the morning’s writing on my Mac 512 – a process that took about a minute longer than Michelangelo needed to finish chiseling David – when the phone rang. I welcomed the diversion.
“Turn on CNN,” said the voice on the other end. It was Ken Finkleman, one of the producers of the script I was working on.
“Why?”
“Just turn on CNN.”
I did. On the network was a breaking news story. A baby had fallen into a backyard well in Midland, Texas. The 18-month-old girl was alive and emergency workers were feverishly trying to rescue her. Jessica McClure, the toddler stuck in the well, would be a story that would capture the world’s attention over four days of around-the-clock coverage.
Besides the friends and family of baby Jessica, I doubt anyone else cared more about the child’s survival than me. Of course,...

Scottsdale (Arizona), Dec 9 (Ians) India’s Jyoti Randhawa and Jeev Milkha Singh have an uphill battle in trying to secure a PGA Tour Champions card for 2023 following the conclusion of the third round on Thursday.
Randhawa carded his week’s best of 5-under 66 featuring six birdies against a lone bogey at Tpc Scottsdale but his three-day total of 4-under 209 puts him in a share of 26th position, some eight shots back of players currently in position to win the five Champions cards at stake this week.
A level par 71 in the third round will see Singh entering the final day in tied 32nd position on 2-under for the tournament. While a top-5 finish may be out of their reach, players finishing sixth through 30th will be eligible to apply for PGA Tour Champions Associate Membership for the 2023 season, which will afford them the opportunity to enter 2023 PGA Tour Champions weekly event qualifiers.
