John Carpenter's Vampires sees James Woods starring as Jack Crow, the leader of a group of vampire hunters. He leads the team as their "master slayer", working to prevent a centuries-old cross from falling into the hands of Jan Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith), the progenitor of all vampires. Claire Danes will lead one of Netflix’s newest mystery thrillers, The Beast in Me. Filming recently concluded, and the series will be released on Netflix in 2025. The Horizon: An American Saga franchise has gotten a surprising update. Directed by and starring Kevin Costner, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 was released on June 28, 2024. The film featured a leading cast including Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Ella Hunt, and Tim Guinee. This first Horizon film was met with mixed reviews, and bombed completely at the box office. The first chapter in the former Yellowstone star’s film saga will release on Max on Aug. 23.

Following the film disappointing at the box office — Chapter 1, which runs three hours and one minute, opened to just $11 million over the June 28-30 weekend — Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema decided to pause on releasing Horizon: Chapter 2. The second installment was pulled from a planned Aug. 16 theater release in order to give audiences the opportunity to discover the first installment on PVOD and Max.

Chapter 1 debuted in the home on Premium VOD July 16 while it remained in theaters, but at that time, a Max date had not been announced. The switch-up in what was an ambitious release plan was in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience, as the first film sports a $100 million price tag.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, the first installment of an ambitious Civil War epic from Kevin Costner, has been set to begin streaming exclusively on Max on Friday, August 23.

The film hits streaming following its Cannes premiere and June 28 theatrical debut, which was regarded as a misfire for a big-budget title, at a gross of just over $34 million. While Warner Bros initially intended to release Chapter 2 just two months later, on August 16 — in an unusual move — the sequel’s release has since been delayed for an indefinite period, the hope being to give audiences who have not yet caught up with Chapter 1 a chance to do so. Chapter 2 will screen out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, with Chapter 1 playing there earlier in the day.

Well, the early tracking numbers are in, and the news is not good: the first part of Horizon is currently projected to make $12 million in its opening weekend of release on June 28th (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.

In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.

Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.

Before the WGA strike began last May, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan had completed scripts for the back half of the show’s fifth season that did not include Costner, whose alleged demands had been widely reported. Kevin Costner has revealed the trailer for the first installment of Horizon: An American Saga, his upcoming multi-part, self-funded western. Horizon Part One is set to hit theaters on June 28th, 2024, with part two following just weeks later on August 16th.

Horizon has been Costner’s passion project for decades, having first begun working on it in 1988. He wrote directed, and stars in the film — and also largely financed it himself (apparently by mortgaging his house). It’s also the reason why Costner decided to depart Yellowstone.

After securing a distribution deal with Warner Bros. and New Line in 2022, Costner left the set of Yellowstone and headed to Utah, where he shot the first two installments of Horizon in succession. Depending on the success of those films, Costner hopes to make two more installments.
