Michael Moore On Palestinian Film ‘From Ground Zero’, U.S. Distribution’s Self-Censorship Crisis & Making His First Movie In Seven Years
Image
Exclusive: Oscar winner Michael Moore is in awe of the endeavor behind anthology film From Ground Zero. The project is a collection of 22 shorts by emerging local filmmakers told through fiction, documentary, docu-fiction, animation and experimental cinema, each capturing the daily challenges, tragedies and moments of resilience faced in the Palestinian enclave.

“This is a stunning achievement,” the Bowling For Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11 director says about the Palestinian film crafted amid the daily destruction and death stalking Gaza.

“It is a brilliant work of art. I tell people, do not avoid this film. If your kids are mature and of a certain age, take them to it. This isn’t just the blood and gore you witness on cable news. This film is the response of people who are trying to stay alive while being bombarded and shot at.”

The Oscar longlisted From Ground Zero, which has played at festivals around the world,...

These Evangelicals Are Cheering the Gaza War as the End of the World
Image
On Tuesday, approximately 300,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., to show their support for Israel in an ongoing war that has claimed the lives of thousands of people. The lineup of speakers at the March for Israel included Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Jewish-American celebrities like Debra Messing and Tovah Feldshuh, as well as rabbis and cantors.

It also included an evangelical Christian pastor from Texas, infamous for his fire-and-brimstone prophecies about the end of the world. “Israel, you are not alone,” John Hagee proclaimed in his San Antonio twang.

New Documentary Shows How American Evangelicals Are ‘Praying For Armageddon’ And Pulling The Levers Of Power To Achieve It – Cph:dox
Image
Imagine not only believing the world is coming to an end, but wanting it to happen. Eagerly. Then, take it a step further and imagine people with such a mentality engineering American politics and foreign policy to bring about the very thing they seek — the apocalypse.

It may sound outlandish, but there are many well organized fundamentalist Christian leaders and their followers working hard to make this doomsday scenario a reality, an alarming movement explored in the documentary Praying for Armageddon. The film directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tonje Hessen Schei and co-directed by Michael Rowley makes its world premiere Monday night at the prestigious Cph:dox festival in Copenhagen.

“What they are really pushing for is the destruction of our civilization. It’s quite outrageous and mind blowing, really,” Schei tells Deadline as we sit at a café in Copenhagen. “And I don’t...

Michael Flynn and the Christian Right’s Plan to Turn America Into a Theocracy
Image
This past weekend, infamous FBI fibber Michael Flynn stood on a stage at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio and spoke his truth: “If we are going to have one nation under God, which we must, we have to have one religion. One nation under God, and one religion under God.” Christian nationalist mic drop. He’d finally said the quiet part out loud.

Which, to be fair, was maybe not even the craziest thing that happened at Cornerstone last weekend as it hosted podcast host Clay Clark’s “Reawaken America...

The Young and the Sexless
James Arness, James Dobson, and Dennis Weaver in Gunsmoke (1955)
This story originally appeared June 30th, 2005, in Issue 977/978, of Rolling Stone

What If The True Face Of The Christian right in America is not that of Dr. James Dobson or Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson; not that of an aging, comb-over preacher orange with pancake makeup, smiling orca rows of ungodly white teeth on The O’Reilly Factor or Hardball? Nor that of spittle-flecked Fred Phelps of Topeka, Kansas, roaring that God hates fags? What if the true face of the Christian right is, instead, that of a twenty-four-year-old religious-studies...

Stephen King, Emilio Estevez, and Laura Harrington in Maximum Overdrive (1986)
How Search for Truth, Empathy Fueled Ryan Culwell’s New Album ‘The Last American’
Stephen King, Emilio Estevez, and Laura Harrington in Maximum Overdrive (1986)
In between the release of 2015’s Flatlands, a dark, moody journey through his native Texas panhandle, and this year’s new album The Last American, Ryan Culwell nearly lost his life. Disenfranchised by the touring business and uncertain of his next step as an artist, Culwell took a job trimming trees and, like a scene out of Maximum Overdrive, came face-to-blade with an out-of-control chainsaw.

He realized immediately that he wasn’t cut out for tree work.

Seated in his favorite pupuseria near his home in one of Nashville’s most ethnically diverse neighborhoods,...

Us pastor says 'Blood moon' was a sign from God
John Hagee
London, Apr 17: A church in the Us has claimed that the total lunar eclipse that turned the moon a dark blood red was a "sign" from God and fulfilled an ancient prophecy foretold in the Bible.

Much of the western hemisphere witnessed the eerie sight in the sky and Nasa has confirmed that a highly unusual 'Tetrad' - four successive 'blood-red' lunar eclipses each followed by six full moons - has now begun and will end on September 28, 2015.

Pastor John Hagee, whose book Four Blood Moons sparked worldwide interest in the phenomenon earlier this year, said it was now too late for mankind to prevent a 'huge' event that would change.

Blood Moon To Appear Tonight: Total Lunar Eclipse Visible
From Monday night into Tuesday morning, a Blood Moon will be visible from North America, caused by a total lunar eclipse.

Blood Moon

The lunar eclipse is said to start around 12:54 a.m. Et on Tuesday, April 15, but the moon will not be totally eclipsed until around 3:07 a.m. Et, and therefore will be most visible then. The total lunar eclipse will last from 3:07 a.m. to 4:25 a.m. Et.

Despite the late hour, what makes this lunar eclipse stand out is its name: a Blood Moon. During a total eclipse, the way the light is refracted in the Earth’s atmosphere makes the moon appear deep red, thus inspiring the name of Blood Moon.

Donald Trump
Palin, Trump Make Things Awkward For Prominent Republians
Donald Trump
Donald Trump may have briefly sidetracked Mitt Romney's campaign message in Las Vegas with his renewed "birther" talk, but it isn't the first time an opinionated supporter has put a candidate in an awkward position.

In 2008, candidate Barack Obama had to distance himself from his former longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, following the Chicago clergyman's incendiary rhetoric and contentious public appearances. Obama also faced questions about his relationships with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and convicted Chicago businessman Antoin "Tony" Rezko.

John McCain had pastor troubles, too. The 2008 Gop nominee secured primary endorsements from pastors John Hagee of Texas and Rod Parsley of Ohio, but later disavowed them because of their controversial sermons.

McCain also was partly upstaged by his lightly vetted running mate, then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Earlier this month, Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker put Obama in a tough spot when he described as "nauseating...

Jerusalem Countdown Blu-ray Review
The Movie Pool gets an end-of-the-world vibe from the Jerusalem Countdown Blu-ray!

The Set-up

An FBI agent (David A.R. White) is on the hunt for seven suitcase nuclear weapons, and learns that the plot may be part of an apocalyptic series of events prophesied in the Bible. Also stars Lee Majors, Stacy Keach and Randy Travis. Based on the novel by John Hagee.

Directed by Harold Cronk.

The Delivery

Jerusalem Countdown is a solid action drama that mixes political intrigue with end-time Biblical prophecy. Mixing the Bible with contemporary human drama can be a hit-or-miss proposition, but when done correctly, it can give a film a deeper, more profound foundation to build upon. Even The DaVinci Code (with its twisted take on Christianity) benefited from using religious undertones to create an epic scope, and films like Megiddo used Christianity to craft an effective Armageddon thriller.

Despite its slower pace, Jerusalem Countdown...

Lawrence O’Donnell: Gov. Rick Perry ‘Is Married To The Idea’ That Catholicism Is ‘A False Cult System’
If the 2008 elections left one indelible mark in the way Presidential politics functions in this country, it is that opponents will forever attempt to link candidates to unsavory religious characters. On last night's The Last Word, Lawrence O'Donnell didn't have to look too far down the guest list to find in Texas Gov. Rick Perry's religious event "The Response" a controversial figure: Pastor John Hagee, most widely known for almost undoing the McCain-Palin campaign with his extreme religious rhetoric.

The state of Alaska has released 24,199 printed pages of emails from Sarah Palin's tenure as governor, ranging from her 2006 inauguration to the 2008 presidential campaign. And for the most part, the media and the public have found themselves shocked--to learn how pedestrian the trove turns out to be. "No big revelations," read a Reuters headline. "The bombshell that wasn't," sighed Yahoo! News.

Indeed, a large portion of the emails seems to confirm already-well-known Palin lore: her feuds with the Alaska state senate president, her association with a controversial pastor. The Freedom of Information Act (Foia) request for the emails was submitted by news organizations way back in 2008, leaving some political journalists to question whether...

TCA update: Ted Haggard and his wife still don't get it, but their daughter does
Ted, Gayle, Christy, and Marcus Haggard (Getty Images/Frederick M. Brown)

Speaking at the Television Critics Association January Tour in Los Angeles last Friday, Ted Haggard wanted to set the record straight about a few things. For instance, his sexuality can't be put in a box. No matter how many times reporters asked, Haggard refused to say if he was gay, straight or something in between though he did say, "I’m in a place where Gayle and I — I’ll speak for me — where I am thoroughly and completely satisfied with my relationship with my wife." He also feels really bad about getting Mike Jones involved in a "gay" relationship. And Haggard now "knows more about hatred than I’ve ever dreamed."

Haggard's wife wants you to know something about her husband as well — he was never, ever a hateful preacher. Said Gayle during the panel promoting HBO's The...
