For eight seasons and 96 episodes, from 2006 to 2013, the series Dexter ran on Showtime, telling the story of Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who is also a vigilante serial killer. Clyde Phillips was showrunner on Dexter for the first four seasons, and in 2021 he and Showtime brought us the revival series Dexter: New Blood… which, for a time, also seemed to be the end of it all. But that’s not the case. Showtime has tasked Phillips with continue to build up the Dexter franchise, with the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin premiering back in December and a New Blood follow-up called Dexter: Resurrection heading for a June premiere. Filming on Dexter: Resurrection is currently underway – and Deadline has just revealed that David Magidoff, who played Teddy Reed from the Iron Lake Police Department in Dexter: New Blood, will be playing the character again...

Dexter Morgan is alive!
The 2021 revival series Dexter: New Blood ended with everyone's favorite serial killer being apparently murdered by his son, Harrison. However, the 2024 prequel series Dexter: Original Sin revealed that Dexter survived the shooting and was rushed to the hospital, where the emergency room doctors worked their magic on him. "I've experienced death so many times, but never my own," Michael C. Hall's titular character said in voice-over. "Ahh, a beating heart. I'll take it."
That brings us to Dexter: Resurrection, which has a release date of Summer 2025 on Paramount+ and Showtime. Production began in January 2025 in New York, with Hall back as the former blood spatter analyst who's now living on the run after being outed as a serial killer known as the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Dexter: Resurrection gets a new update, revealing that a Dexter: New Blood actor will be returning. Coming eight years after the divisive Dexter season 8 finale, New Blood picks up with Michael C. Hall's titular serial killer living under a new identity in Iron Lake, a town in upstate New York. Though the limited series was seemingly positioned as the end of the saga, it was subsesquently confirmed that Hall would return in the Dexter: Resurrection sequel show, which is set to feature a mix of new and familiar faces from across the franchise when it premieres this summer.
Deadline now reports that actor David Magidoff will return in Dexter: Resurrection. Magidoff played Iron Lake Police Department officer Teddy Reed in New Blood and will be reprising this role, though the extent of the character's involvement in the sequel show remains unknown.

Dexter: Original Sin has become a new favorite among Dexter fans. The prequel explores the origin story of ‘America’s favorite serial killer,’ following a young Dexter as he embraces his Dark Passenger under the guidance of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan.

Exploring the early years of Dexter’s life, the prequel also reintroduces several familiar faces, including Brian Moser, Dex’s older brother. However, Brian’s presence posed a significant challenge for showrunner Clyde Phillips. While reflecting on the character’s appearance, Phillips revealed that one particular scene had the potential to completely derail the continuity of the original series.

Watching Dexter: Original Sin has completely changed the way I see Dexter as a whole. For years, I bought into the idea that Harry Morgan was the wise and composed father figure who saved his adoptive son from becoming a mindless killer and gave him a purpose with the ‘Code.’
Dexter | Credit: Showtime
The original series painted his character as a man who, despite his questionable methods, genuinely cared for Dexter and did his best to raise him under a strict moral code. However, Original Sin flips the narrative, revealing a Harry we never expected, adding depth to Dexter’s character and his psychological conflicts.
The prequel spin-off Dexter: Original Sin reveals the real Harry Morgan
Given Harry Morgan died ten years before the events of the original series, we only ever saw him through Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) memories – memories that, as it turns out were unreliable at best.

Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel spin-off, focuses on the early life of the titular antihero and his journey to becoming the avenging serial killer that viewers fell in love with in the original Showtime series. And the show has opened new possibilities for the franchise’s redemption after the disappointing sequel, New Blood.

Dexter goes down in history as one of the best shows with a terrible series finale. But that’s Ok, because the series' reputation was partially saved by the continuation series Dexter: New Blood, along with the prequel Dexter: Original Sin. Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan faced off against some pretty memorable villains during the course of the original series, but perhaps none are more fondly remembered than John Lithgow's Arthur Mitchell, a.k.a. The Trinity Killer. He's so revered that not only is he getting his own prequel series in the same vein as Dexter: Original Sin, but he’s also set to return in Dexter: Resurrection, the sequel show that picks things up from where New Blood left off in 2021. However, with Trinity meeting his demise at the end of Dexter Season 4, don’t expect him to stick around too long.
Appearing on an episode of Variety's Know their Lines, Lithgow – who was recently cast as Albus Dumbledore in HBO's reboot of Harry Potter – touched on his upcoming appearance in Dexter: Resurrection, and just how his character of The Trinity Killer fits into the sequel.

With a casting announcement for Dexter: Resurrection coming to the light nearly every single day, it’s clear that the revival series means business. With newcoming names like Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction) joining ranks with Michael C. Hall’s titular vigilante killer, it certainly seems like the creative team is going all gas and no brakes with this one. And, while we can certainly wrap our heads around how the production will bring back other beloved characters from the hit shows of yesteryear, like Dexter’s son, Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott) and Detective Angel Batista (David Zayas), a question mark was hanging over the return of Dexter’s most beloved big-bad, John Lithgow’s the Trinity Killer.

The Trinity Killer's surprise return in Dexter: Resurrection gets a new explanation from John Lithgow. After the success of creator Clyde Phillips' original Dextershow, Michael C. Hall returned as the titular serial killer in Dexter: New Blood in 2021, 8 years after the divisive season 8 finale. Now, Hall is reprising his role as the character once more in the Dexter: Resurrection sequel show, which will feature the return of some familiar cast members, including David Zayas as Angel Batista, James Remar as Harry Morgan, Jack Alcott as Harrison Morgan, and Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell, aka the Trinity Killer.
In a recent interview with Variety, Lithgow confirms that viewers shouldn't expect to see the Trinity Killer beyond a brief cameo in Dexter: Resurrection. The actor reveals that he returned for only one day of filming, with his character appearing as a "phantom" to Dexter as he awakens in the hospital. Check out Lithgow's...

John Lithgow has teased how his character will return from death in the new Dexter series. Lithgow played the Trinity Killer in the fourth season of the original Showtime TV series.
Speaking with Variety, Lithgow shared that his appearance on the new Dexter show won't be a major one. "I just went back to do a day," he said. "They’re rebooting the entire Michael C. Hall version of ‘Dexter.’ And it turns out he didn’t die after all. I come back sort of as a phantom, as he gradually comes to life on a hospital bed." Lithgow appeared as Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer who pretended to be a family man in Dexter. However, his character ultimately met his end when pursued by Dexter (Michael C. Hall), the show's titular vigilante serial killer.
Dexter: Resurrection is the latest spin-off in the franchise, developed as a continuation of Dexter: New Blood.

You might know him from his Marvel and DC roles, but David Dastmalchian has been steadily working on building his career outside of the realms of superhero movies, and several of his latest projects confirm that he is doing a great job.
We don’t know whether that influenced the casting decision, but his work in the horror movie Late Night with the Devil proved that he could tackle morbid and horror roles with ease, and in light of that, we are happy to confirm that he is joining the cast of Dexter: Resurrection in a guest role!
As Dexter: New Blood is gearing up for a summer release, Dastmalchian has been cast in the role of Gareth, a role that is enigmatic as of the time of writing. But the Dexter universe has been growing significantly and we are thrilled about that.

John Lithgow is stepping into two iconic roles—one new, one old. The legendary actor joined Variety for an episode of “Know Their Lines” and confirmed he will be playing Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series and also revealed he’ll be returning to “Dexter” as the Trinity Killer. When it comes to the former role, Lithgow admitted he has “a lot of catching up to do.”

Ah, Dexter, the show that made us question if we should be rooting for a serial killer. But let’s be honest, half of us were watching for the crime and the other half for the drama behind the scenes. One of the biggest off-screen twists? Michael C. Hall, Dexter himself and Jennifer Carpenter, his on-screen sister, Debra were actually married in real life.

Yep, it was all love and murder on TV, of course until their marriage met a tragic end, though thankfully, it didn’t involve plastic wrap and a kill room. Now, years after their divorce, fans are still wondering, did these two manage to stay friends, or did their relationship get chopped up like one of Dexter’s victims? Let’s dive in!

Sometimes, the funniest people end up turning in some of the most intense dramatic work, so it should come as no surprise that Eric Stonestreet, best-known for making audiences laugh as Cameron Tucker on Modern Family, has lined up a killer role on Dexter: Resurrection. The actor joins a series of big names with major story arcs in the next thrilling chapter of the titular character's life.
Per Deadline, Stonestreet has joined the cast in a major guest arc on the series. The actor is expected to appear in four episodes and will portray a serial killer called Al. The Modern Family alum joins Krysten Ritter's Mia and Neil Patrick Harris' Lowell, who are rumored to have guest stints as serial killers that will keep Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) very busy. Dexter: Resurrection has been filming in New York since January and will arrive on Paramount+ with Showtime this summer.

Eric Stonestreet, the lovable goofball we know from ‘Modern Family,’ is jumping into a role that’s about as far from comedy as you can get. He’s set to creep us out in the new Showtime series ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ and I’m already hooked on the idea.
Stonestreet’s playing a serial killer named Al, a Midwestern guy with a chilling secret. It’s a wild leap from his days as Cameron Tucker, the over-the-top dad on ‘Modern Family.’ That show ran from 2009 to 2020, racking up 11 seasons and earning him two Emmys for his spot-on humor. Now, he’s ditching the laughs to join the twisted world of Dexter Morgan.
If you’re new to this, ‘Dexter’ first hit screens in 2006, following a forensics guy who moonlights as a vigilante killer. Michael C. Hall made the character a legend over eight seasons, even if the ending in 2013 left us scratching our heads.

You'll never guess which Modern Family star just landed a serial killer role on Dexter: Resurrection
Another Emmy-winning comedy actor has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection, the upcoming sequel series to Dexter: New Blood. Eric Stonestreet, who famously played Cameron Tucker on all 11 seasons of Modern Family, has been tapped to recur on the series in what is believed to be a serial killer role.
The exclusive comes from Deadline, the same outlet that previously reported both Neil Patrick Harris and Krysten Ritter's casting news. Apparently, all three characters are playing serial killers as part of their guest-starring arcs. It remains to be seen if they're going to work together in some capacity, or just be one of several villains that Dexter has to eliminate.
Deadline says Stonestreet has been cast as a character named Al. Like the actor, Al also hails from the Midwest and will reportedly appear in four episodes as part of a "high profile guest-arc."
