Leatherface may soon be revving the chainsaw back up. Word is that different parties are pursuing a potential reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and one possibility would see Glen Powell in a lead role.
Per Deadline, a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie is in the planning stages at Verve, the company holding the rights to the IP since 2017. There are different pitches reportedly in consideration, including one package that could bring together Powell with filmmaker Jt Mollner and producer Roy Lee. Mollner and Lee recently worked on the horror hit Strange Darling, which holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes after its release last year. According to the report, Powell is interested in reading the script if Mollner can get one written, potentially putting him into position as the film's star.
Nothing is set in stone just yet, so there are no guarantees Powell will next be facing off with Leatherface.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface, played by Gunnar Hansen, continues to terrify audiences. Interestingly, even the biggest names in horror weren't immune to his presence when the actor made his debut as the chainsaw-wielding character.
In a new clip from Dinner With Leatherface (via the JoBlo Horror YouTube channel), Friday the 13th franchise star Kane Hodder, best known for playing Jason Voorhees in four Friday the 13th films, recalled the impact that Hansen’s performance had on him as a horror actor. "I was so impressed that an actor could scare the s**t out of me without speaking or using his face," he said. "I was so impressed that [he] could do that. And sure enough, years later, I'm trying to do the exact same thing."

Acting couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie have produced a body horror hit. After the success of their new film at the Sundance Film Festival, it will be given a wider release in theaters courtesy of Neon.
Per Variety, Franco and Brie's Together has just been sold to Neon after the film's impressive debut at Sundance. With its early reviews after premiering at the prestigious film festival, Together has a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This early praise, coupled with The Substance – another acclaimed body horror film – garnering major award nominations, may have helped seal the deal of Neon swooping in to acquire the distribution rights. Plot: Friends, colleagues, filmmakers, and fellow actors share personal stories and discuss the dichotomy between the maniacal chainsaw-wielding character he played on-screen and the very intelligent, creative, soft-spoken man he actually was in real life.

Remakes are pretty common in the horror genre, but not necessarily popular and not always good. Studios that own classic intellectual properties like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" obviously want to monetize them, but longtime fans have a hard time getting past anyone besides Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger or Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface. It's a problem at least as old as Universal's classics -- Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff were not the only actors to play Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, respectively, but they are the names and faces that everyone remembers and loves from the Universal Monsters movies.
So why remake the hits? Why not remake flops instead? Sure, some of those flops may have intense fan bases, but imagine how many more people would love them if the concept were done better the second time around? A clever notion that...

Once upon a time, the most popular monsters of filmdom were linked to certain actors. Though other individuals would play these roles over time, ask any movie buff to name the performers best known for portraying Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man, and they'll fire back with, respectively, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Karloff again, and Lon Chaney Jr. But while these roles were spoken for in the public's consciousness, one of these actors was famous, at least among seriously committed horror fans, for having played all four of Universal's marquee monsters -- and that actor was Chaney Jr.

Halloween might get all the credit for starting the slasher wave in 1978, but it really began a few years earlier thanks to Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1974. The tale of Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen) and his family of cannibals was something audiences had never seen before. It might have found its roots in the real-life story of Ed Gein, but it became its own wild nightmare. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre influenced what was to come, from Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes, to Halloween and Friday the 13th. All of those films were a success and audiences wanted more of them; make a movie about a madman in a mask chasing people, and you had an easy hit.

Fifty-one years ago, director Tobe Hooper and his cast and crew spent a blisteringly hot Texas summer working to bring us one of the greatest horror films ever made, the 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it Here)… and to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the film, Neca is releasing new action figures of the Leatherface and Hitchhiker characters! These action figures won’t actually make their way onto collectors’ shelves until May 2025, but they’re available for pre-order through Entertainment Earth and Big Bad Toy Store.

There’s nothing quite like Rv horror. Inspired by an expanding national highway system and the proliferation of motor parks in the 1960s, this distinctive subgenre offers a unique blend of classic genre fare. Part home invasion, part road trip tale, part hicksploitation with a smidge of folk horror, the recreational vehicle becomes a home away from home and offers the illusion of safety while traversing strange locales. Jack Starrett’s Race with the Devil is arguably the first great entry in the Rv horror tradition, a criminally underseen film following two suburban couples on a road trip to hell.
Friends and business partners Frank (Warren Oates) and Roger (Peter Fonda) have just set out on an adventurous road trip from San Antonio, Texas to a ski vacation in Aspen, Colorado. When we think about iconic final girls, it’s usually Laurie Strode, Nancy Thompson, and Sidney Prescott who come to mind. These fantastic female characters have become horror movie legends, celebrated for their strength and resilience while inspiring a generation of girls to take back their power. Horror historians will also note the flawless Jess Bradford (Olivia Hussey) from Bob Clark’s Black Christmas while sci-fi fans will suggest Ellen Ripley. But before them all was Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns). The star and sole survivor of Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre burst onto the scene in October of 1974 and forever changed the way we view women in film. "I remember the screams in the theater. People walked out. But the audience that stayed was hooked." Those are the words of Gunnar Hansen, the man behind Leatherface, writing in his book "Chain Saw Confidential" about how audiences reacted to director Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" in 1974. Hooper, for his part, had become bored with the horror genre and " set out as a fan of the genre to do something that gave you [...] your money's worth," as he put it in an interview with NPR in 2017. One of the most notorious aspects of Tobe Hooper's 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is that, despite its lurid title, premise, and tagline ("Who will survive and what will be left of them?"), the kills in the iconic proto-slasher are delivered with little to no special effects, blood, or gore. However, in spite of, or in fact because of this, the movie has not lost one ounce of its brutality and power in the 50 years since its original release.

Fifty years ago, in 1974, director Tobe Hooper shocked the world with his film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It was ruthless in its violence with the tale of Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen) and his wild family stalking a group of young adults on the outskirts of a small Texas town. Leatherface became one of horror's most iconic villains because of it, and a plethora of sequels followed. Some, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, also directed by Hooper, and the 2003 reboot, are surprisingly pretty good, while others, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, are best avoided. Then there's 2013's Texas Chainsaw 3D. Starring Alexandra Daddario, it had an interesting premise of being a direct sequel to the first film, ignoring all the other follow-ups to the original. However, not only did it botch that with a horrible twist ending, but the filmmakers somehow completely messed up the year it takes place in,...

Every once in a while, a movie comes around that’s so viscerally different from what came before it that the fabric of cinema is permanently altered. To say that future filmmakers were “influenced” by it almost feels like an understatement, as its legacy has less to do with inspiring specific aesthetic innovations than reconceptualizing the way we think about moving images.
It’s somewhat ironic that a movie titled “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” went on to become such a film. Tobe Hooper’s 1974 slasher masterpiece embraced its lowbrow status with its matter-of-fact title and unapologetic gore, likely seen by many as a cheap attempt to ride shock value into a quick box office gold mine. But as any horror lover will be quick to tell you, that could not be further from the truth. While the film still holds up as a fantastic standalone slasher flick — this writer would...

Fourteen years after Hitchcock popularized the serial killer genre with Psycho, Tobe Hooper's 1974 masterpiece, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, broke onto the scene, and many consider it one of the most terrifying horror films of all time. After a difficult shoot and fraught distribution process, the film became an all-around miracle of filmmaking and spawned a franchise that would go on to include three direct sequels, a 2003 remake (produced by Michael Bay of Transformers fame), a prequel to the remake, and two "reboots" of the original franchise. The iconic chainsaw-wielding slasher of the film, Leatherface, sits alongside Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers as one of the most popular horror movie characters of all time. And, despite the violence of the films at the hands of Leatherface, kids still wear his mask on Halloween.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise's most polarizing installment has landed on a major streaming platform, now available to stream on Peacock. Starring Mathew McConaughey and Rene Zellweger on the cusp of stardom, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation debuted in 1995.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is now available to stream on Peacock. Written, co-produced, and directed by Kim Henkel, the film, originally titled The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, is the fourth installment in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film series. The plot follows four teenagers who encounter Leatherface and his murderous family in Backwoods, Texas, on the night of their prom. McConaughey stars in the movie as Vilmer, a sadistic tow truck driver in league with Leatherface. He delivers a fittingly manic performance in the film. Zellweger also gave a strong performance as the main protagonist, Jenny.

“The film which you are about to see is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of five youths, in particular Sally Hardesty and her invalid brother, Franklin. It is all the more tragic in that they were young. But, had they lived very, very long lives, they could not have expected, nor would they have wished to see as much of the mad and macabre as they were to see that day. For them an idyllic summer afternoon drive became a nightmare. The events of that day were to lead to the discovery of one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” When I joke about movies being very loosely based on a true story, that opening dialogue from John Larroquette and the wild popularity is what I’m referring to. While it may not be the first...

For the unwitting young victims at the center of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, "an idyllic summer afternoon drive became a nightmare." The narrator (John Larroquette) sets the scene without sentiment as if performing a grim incantation. The events that we are about to see will be horrific. Sickly yellow text rises from the darkness, ushering in a new age of horror filmmaking. Tobe Hooper's 1974 masterpiece is a sun-soaked entity of and beyond meaning, a galvanizing force of Austin, Texas' independent moviemaking scene, and the birth of something so startlingly vibrant that it remains, 50 years after its initial release, as potent as ever.

Slashers ruled the late 1970s and the '80s, but while the likes of Michael Myers from the Halloween movies, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th franchise, and Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series became iconic household names, most people don't know who played them. Robert Englund became famous for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, but that was because his face was seen, even behind the burn scar makeup, and we heard his voice. For the masked villains, we didn't see their faces or hear them speak. It could have been any ol' stuntman behind the mask; and oftentimes, it was. Sometimes they made enough of a mark that a lot of horror fans now know them, like Gunnar Hansen who is the original Leatherface, Nick Castle who gave us the first Michael Myers, and Kane Hodder, the most famous Jason Voorhees due to...

Horror author Paul Tremblay developed a deep love of spooky stories early on, and he tackles the haunted films genre with his newest novel, “Horror Movie” (out Tuesday via William Morrow and Company). The plot concerns a ’90s cult classic horror movie which left all but one cast member dead and the dark stories that are dredged up as a remake comes closer to reality.
Professionally, Tremblay is no stranger to scary movies, as his 2019 novel “The Cabin at the End of the World” was adapted into M. The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game from Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham was just released for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One back on August 18th, and it has been frequently updated since then. The question of how to get the most authenticity possible out of actors has been riling up filmmakers for as long as the film medium has existed. William Wyler ("Ben-Hur") did 40 takes; Robert Bresson ("Pickpocket") insisted on simple movements and monotone line deliveries; Italian Neorealists cast people off the street; Robert Altman ("Nashville") let actors improvise; Andrei Tarkovsky ("Solaris") kept them in the dark about how the story would end.
When it comes to horror, the quest becomes even more daunting: How do you convince viewers that the people they're seeing on screen are genuinely disturbed and terrified, while also securing enough distance between actors and characters to keep the shoot sustainable? Some films have attempted to split the difference by instilling genuine scares, discomfort, and emotional distress on their actors.
