We all love Scarlett Johansson for a number of reasons. She’s an incredible actor as well as an entrepreneur and has taken both fields by storm thanks to her hard work, talent, and determination. This makes us wonder, did a young ScarJo believe that she was going to make it big in the film industry one day? Before becoming the world’s favorite Black Widow, the actress did a handful of roles here and there which helped pave her way to fame.

Edward Berger says he didn’t realize the BAFTAs were going his way until the final award of the night, when Best Film became the seventh trophy to add to his film’s haul. If he’d known that All Quiet on the Western Front, his adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s First World War novel would do so well, he might have taken the next day off. Instead, he left the Netflix party at around 2am for a flight to Rome, in time for a 9am call at the historic Cinecittà Studios and a full day of shooting on his follow-up.

If a superhero is lucky, they'll get one definitive theme song. For Superman, it's John Williams' theme from the 1978 movie. For Spider-Man, it's the catchy theme song from the 1967 cartoon, composed by Paul Francis Webster and Bob Harris.
With Batman, though, the question is more difficult. The Dark Knight has an abundance of amazing themes, all of which fit different aspects of his character. The 1966 "Batman" theme is perfect for the bright, mile-a-minute mood of Adam West's Caped Crusader. Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's theme for the "Dark Knight" Trilogy, "Molossus," is operatic, fitting for the seriousness of those films. Michael Giacchino's theme from "The Batman" is slow and foreboding, perfect for a Batman who's a creature of the night hunting criminals.

Released by David Bowie’s estate in 2022, Divine Symmetry, subtitled “An Alternative Journey Through Hunky Dory,” is a 4-disc collection chronicling the year’s work leading to David Bowie’s fourth studio album. Demos, previously unreleased tracks, and live recordings capture the sound of a vision in a state of flux.
As its lead single, “Changes,” makes clear, Hunky Dory, released on Dec. 17, 1971, presented a notable metamorphosis for the artist who would go on to define transformation. This worked against Bowie as his label, RCA Records, worried he would reframe his image again, and did not promote the single. Hunky Dory didn’t chart until after the release of Bowie’s 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie had only landed one hit during his tenure at Mercury Records, and it would have marked him as a novelty singer. “Space Oddity” charted five days before the Apollo 11 launch in 1969. His third album,...

Director Edward Berger and producer Malte Grunert are set to follow up their new adaption of Erich Maria Remarque’s harrowing war novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” with a much more upbeat work, a remake of the rollicking 1967 French-Italian pic “The Last Adventure,” which starred Alain Delon, Lino Ventura and Joanna Shimkus.
Grunert and Berger had been working on the remake and were already in development when “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which makes its world premiere at the Toronto fest Sept. 12, came along.
They are now planning to return to the project after Berger finishes his next pic, the Vatican-set thriller “Conclave,” based on the Robert Harris novel and set to star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini. Berger goes into prep on “Conclave” in October in Rome, with production scheduled to start in January.

The blacklist strikes back as both writer Ben Maddow and director Martin Ritt examine the booming ’50s phenomenon of The Suburbs. No money up front will get you into an ‘estate’ of your dreams, provided you’re white. Possibly a little too direct in its messaging of sickness in the American dream, much of what we see in the ticky-tacky subdivision of Sunrise Hills will ring true to those of us who lived it.

I have a back file of reader notes asking for a Blu-ray for John Huston’s Moby Dick, and more pointedly, wondering what will be done with its strange color scheme. I wasn’t expecting miracles, but this new Twilight Time disc should make the purists happy – it has approximated the film’s original, heavily muted color scheme.

Lana Turner movies: Scandal and more scandal Lana Turner is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" star today, Saturday, August 10, 2013. I’m a little — or rather, a lot — late in the game posting this article, but there are still three Lana Turner movies left. You can see Turner get herself embroiled in scandal right now, in Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life (1959), both the director and the star’s biggest box-office hit. More scandal follows in Mark Robson’s Peyton Place (1957), the movie that earned Lana Turner her one and only Academy Award nomination. And wrapping things up is George Sidney’s lively The Three Musketeers (1948), with Turner as the ruthless, heartless, remorseless — but quite elegant — Lady de Winter. Based on Fannie Hurst’s novel and a remake of John M. Stahl’s 1934 melodrama about mother love, class disparities, racism, and good cooking, Imitation of Life was shown on...

It’s back to Paris for Roman Polanski and back to square one in legal attempts to extradite the controversial auteur.
How viable the director’s film career remains is even more unclear.
Swiss authorities said early Monday that they will not extradite Polanski, 76, and that the director, wanted in the U.S. on a 1977 charge of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl, is a free man.
But by the afternoon, Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley responded that though Switzerland refused to return the director to California for sentencing, extradition will be sought if he is arrested elsewhere.
“Our office complied fully with all of the factual and legal requirements of the extradition treaty and requests by the U.S. and Swiss Departments of Justice and State,” Cooley said. “We will discuss with the Department of Justice the extradition of Roman Polanski if he’s arrested in a cooperative jurisdiction.

Hey, lookit that giant motherfucking elephant just sitting in the room, shitting in the corner, making a big ol' stink. It is literally impossible for me to review this film objectively. Because no matter how good or bad it is, it's going to be overshadowed by director Roman Polanski's exploits. The merits of his artistry will forever be skewed -- either tainted for those who eternally chant "Roman e Rapist" or the sycophants who feel necessary to bolster their appreciation as if touting praise for his work somehow defends him. Allegations of kiddie-diddling aside, Roman Polanski is simply a phenomenal director -- imbuing all of his work with signature attitude, concussively mordant finales, and jarring wit. But we can't put the allegations aside, because that's how society works. Our history is resplendent with luminaries who have committed sins that forever mar their reputations, be they golden-showering rap stars, car-murderin' first ladies,...

A few weeks ago, we got a sneak peek at Roman Polanski's newest film, The Ghost Writer, previously known as The Ghost, and we can finally loosen our lips a tad to talk about this thriller. (A full review of the final cut will be forthcoming the week of release.) Ewan McGregor plays a professional ghost writer known for more fluffy and financially successful books than serious political biographies. Nevertheless, he is brought in at the last minute to finish the memoirs of former British Pm Adam Lang after the previous ghost writer -- and Lang's close friend -- mysteriously drowns before finishing the book.
Lang has sequestered himself on a little island in New England to finish his memoirs, but the handsome and athletic figurehead seems seems far less interested in politics than his savvy wife Ruth. The book's deadline isn't the only thing looming in this ominous,...

When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. Cologne, Germany -- Roman Polanski will remain in a Swiss jail until at least Friday while authorities await his $4.5 million bail payment. But the director's latest film, "The Ghost," looks set to travel to the Berlin International Film Festival in February.
On Tuesday, German distributor Kinowelt announced it would release "The Ghost" on Feb.18, 2010 -- in the middle of the Berlin fest, which is set for Feb. 11-21.
Kinowelt declined comment, but sources close to the production confirmed "The Ghost" would premiere at the 60th Berlin festival. The official festival debut is likely to come in the first week -- ahead of the national rollout Feb. 18. It is unclear whether "The Ghost" will run in competition in Berlin or as a special gala screening, though insiders suggest the latter.
The Berlin festival could not be reached for comment Tuesday, but organizers rarely comment on Berlin's lineup outside of official press conferences.

Stockholm -- Director Roman Polanski will remain in a Swiss jail until at least Monday, authorities said, as conditions for his bail have yet to be met.
The 76-year-old filmmaker was granted $4.5 million bail this week on condition he remain under house arrest at his Swiss chalet in the ski resort of Gstaad.
Swiss Justice Ministry spokesman Folco Galli said Friday that more time is needed to fulfill the conditions of Polanski's house arrest, which will include the director surrendering passports and travel documents and be fitted with a electronic monitoring bracelet. The Justice Ministry will issue a statement as soon as Polanski is freed, Galli said.
Polanski's luxury chalet will be a step up from the cell where he has been staying since his arrest in September on a decades-old charge of having sex with a 13-year-old girl. But the director is still facing extradition to the U.S.

If Roman Polanski hadn't made a bunch of excellent movies and won an Oscar, would we be up in arms about a fugitive being brought to justice after three decades on the run? No, he'd be on America's Most Wanted.
Ronda Kaysen: If I have to hear one more person bemoan the justice system because Roman Polanski finally got arrested for pleading guilty to child rape and skipping town before sentencing, I'll scream.
So what if the guy makes really good movies? He raped a 13-year-old girl. It doesn't matter that the victim has come forward and said she no longer wants to see him prosecuted because she's tired of the media circus. She did not say, mind you, that she thinks he's innocent. She would just like to stop hearing about the time a famous director drugged, raped, and sodomized her 31 years ago.
In an op-ed in today's New York Times,...

Roman Polanski Arrest Backgrounder No doubt you’ve heard the rumblings and innuendo about acclaimed film director Roman Polanski’s arrest in Zurich Switzerland on Us charges of sex with a 13 year old girl stemming from a incident at Jack Nicholson’s house in the 1970s. It’s a touchy subject to discuss and for those who grew up in more recent times, a bit shocking.
Hollywood in the 1970s As I recall from my youth, the Hollywood of the 1970s were full of what seem like outlandish incidents to our hyper-sensitive reality-tv diluted eyes. Examples include Hogan’s Heroes star Bob Crane’s 1978 unseemly murder and subsequent uncovering of his sexual predilections, Natalie Wood somewhat mysterious accidental drowning while on a boat with Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken in 1981 and the Hollywood connections of the Charles Manson murders including Polanski’s pregnant wife Sharon Tate.

The legal tussle over the detention of Roman Polanski has deepened as the saga enters its third day with the filmmaker’s lawyers formally challenging the right of the Swiss authorities to detain the 76 year old.
The Swiss Federal Penal Court confirmed on their website that the Director had formally appealed against his arrest, supporting reports from his legal team that he was “in a fighting mood.” Swiss authorities were acting on an International Arrest Warrant issued in 2005. Polanski has been classified as a fugitive by Us authorities since he fled the country in 1978, having pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with 13 year old Samantha Geimer (then Gailey).
Swiss officials confirmed that a decision would be made on the appeal “within the next few weeks.” The Us now have up to 60 days to finalise an extradition request, which if successful, would see the Chinatown director return to Los Angeles for sentencing.

Looks like German director Robert Schwentke is going home for his next movie. The Flight Plan director has signed on to direct the thriller Venus Fixer, about a Holocaust survivor who is recruited by the Us military to track down a serial killer who’s terrorising post-war Berlin. To do so, he must join forces with a German policeman, with whom he had been good friends before the Nazis came to power. Astonishingly, as well as reading like a Robert Harris novel, the movie will be based on a true story. J.C. Pollack wrote the screenplay, while Cathy Schulman will produce for Mandalay Pictures and New Line.
