Tamara Hernandez was born in Canada to a Nicaraguan father and an Irish-Canadian mother. After navigating a challenging upbringing herself, she came to tell stories about people struggling and seeking ways to put themselves together and get over in the normal world. She uses magical realism, sci-fi, and dark comedy genres to tell tragic, funny, and emotionally powerful stories.
Her short The Slap was chosen for Critics' Week in Cannes and Sundance and sold worldwide. Her feature Men Cry Bullets won Best Narrative Feature at SXSW and other festivals and played in theaters across the U.S. After her feature, Tamara directed two documentaries: Dial T for Torment for Jimmy Kimmel and The Chicano Collection for Cheech Marin. Hernandez is an alumni of Nantucket's Almanack Screenwriter Colony. After having children, she wrote, directed, and produced an educational series, Your Child Can Discover. She recently finished writing and directing two shorts, Adelaida and Alienated.
