Taffy Brodesser-Akner knows something about love.
And men and women, and why they fall in and out of love.
It’s no wonder why her debut novel, Fleishman Is in Trouble became an immediate New York Times Bestseller, as well as a notch on the National Book Award longlist, resonating with many. Now, Fleishman Is in Trouble is a 7x Primetime Emmy nominated FX series.
Similar to the 4x Oscar winning movie Annie Hall, Fleishman Is in Trouble is a deconstruction of how a great relationship goes very wrong. Part of the blame goes to those couples who are managing their egos, as they head into the middle ages of middle age.
Across eight episodes, the FX/ABC Signature limited series is laden with a plethora of wisdom as to why the sacred institution of marriage goes unholy: “People aren’t having affairs because they’re betraying their spouse, rather...

The quintessential teen drama series of the 2000s, The O.C. made huge stars out of its main actors, and the cast has starred in many great projects since. The show centers on Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) moving in with the affluent Cohens in Orange County, California after his brother Trey (Logan Marshall-Green) steals a car. Once Ryan decides to stay, his presence affects the other characters positively as they all grow closer. The show features coming-of-age teen storylines as Ryan, Seth Cohen (Adam Brody), Summer Roberts (Rachel Bilson), and Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) experience first love and listen to music at the local club, The Bait Shop.
While Peter Gallagher (Sandy Cohen) was already established, having starred in films like The Player and American Beauty, younger stars Brody, Barton, and Bilson rose to fame as a result of the series. Brody has moved away from the teen genre and...

Fleishman Is In Trouble author Taffy Brodesser-Akner says one of the biggest challenges in adapting her book for the FX on Hulu limited series was learning to write dialogue rather than lengthy paragraphs. Fortunately, Brodesser-Akner’s a quick learner and had the support of experienced executive producers Sarah Timberman and Susannah Grant while working on her first show.
“When I met Sarah and Susannah, they told me that I was the only person who could write it, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, what if I’m the only person who could write it?’” recalled Brodesser-Akner during a November 2022 press conference. “And that’s how I got to do it, with two people who believed in it and who showed me how you could change just a few words and...

All right my dudes and lady dudes, stop quoting Guy Bilzerian’s law commercials because “Big Mouth” has now returned for its third season! To celebrate this great occasion, along with Netflix’s decision to renew the show through season six, we’re taking a look back at the show’s greatest episodes from the first two seasons and ranking all 21 of them from worst to best.
The show centers on a group of pre-teens who are being clobbered on all sides by puberty on both a physical level and an emotional one. The two main characters are Nick Birch (Nick Kroll) and Andrew Glouberman (John Mulaney), who are best friends but at different stages of puberty. It’s not kicking in for Nick, who still hasn’t even had a growth spurt, while it’s hit Andrew like a freight train. The effects of this include an early mustache and his own hormone monster,...

Starz has acquired a slew of comedy series, specials and films that launched on Seeso, the NBCUniversal-owned Svod service that shuttered last year.
Among the series in the deal are Take My Wife, Night Train with Wyatt Cenac and The Ucb Show. It also includes stand-up specials from the Sklar Brothers, Brian Posehn and Lachlan Patterson, along with The Pistol Shrimps, the documentary about a group of showbiz folks including Aubrey Plaza who play in a women’s recreational basketball league in L.A.
“We are excited to address the uncertain fate of several Seeso series, including the beloved Take My Wife series, by providing a new home for these programs and their fans at Starz,” said C. Brett Marottoli, Head of Program Acquisitions for Starz. “These comedies align strategically with many Starz Original series and will appeal to our audiences as we continue featuring more diverse casts and storylines across the Starz platforms.

Netflix’s “Love” may be one of the hardest TV series titles to search on Google. But the folks behind the show still like the title.
“It’s like how I love when I see a diner and it’s just called ‘Food,'” said executive producer Judd Apatow, speaking to IndieWire with stars Paul Rust and Gillian Jacobs. “No need to come up with a fancy name.”
“You can’t get angry,” Rust added. “They’re like, ‘Hey, we promised food.'”
In a similar fashion, with the title “Love,” Apatow, Rust, and co-creator Lesley Arfin have promised to depict that most complex yet most simple of human emotions on the screen. But they don’t promise a happy ending, which makes the quasi-comedy at times a nerve-wracking experience. Perhaps that’s because the show remains firmly grounded in the real world, where happy endings are rarely a guarantee.

Girls, “Two Plane Rides”
Written by Lena Dunham

Do you remember how last season’s Girls run ended? Well this season things culminated in an entirely different tone. This time, there were no grand gestures or fireworks. Season three isn’t quite as dark as season two, but man is the finale rough. If the season two finale frustrated fans because it suggested that Hannah might be too dependent on the man in her life, the season three finale seems intent on underlining that Hannah’s ready to move on, with or without Adam. And she isn’t the only one moving on, but she seems to be the only one moving in the right direction: Hannah gets into the country’s best grad school, Adam gives a truly “bad” performance in his Broadway debut, Marnie finds herself in another destructive relationship, Shosh...

A review of tonight's "Parks and Recreation" coming up just as soon as I listen to a Ted talk by the color beige... On the whole, I didn't find "The Wall" nearly as successful as last week's "Anniversaries," even though both spent a lot of time on the Pawnee-Eagleton conflict. Ron bringing his son John (middle name redacted) to work was fun — and the fact that the birth happened off camera, as a complete surprise to Leslie and the others, fits both Ron Swanson's philosophy regarding personal information and the show's tendency to race through big life cycle events as quickly as possible — but there was too much Jamm, too much Craig (who works best in concentrated doses), and I'm in general less fond of episodes built largely around how terrible the people of Pawnee and/or Eagleton are. I understand that in this case, it was supposed to provide...

Ever wonder what airs from 2:45 to 6:15 a.m. on Pawnee's public access? Why, a news magazine hosted by Perd Hapley, of course.
NBC has released the first episode of "The Hapley Group," their "Parks and Recreation" digital series meant to satisfy fans' cravings while the sitcom breaks for the Winter Olympics and, boy, is it a heaping helping of Hapley.
In the episode, everyone's favorite newscaster (played by Jay Jackson) sits down with some of Pawnee's brightest luminaries -- Joan Callamezzo (Mo Collins), Crazy Ira (Matt Besser), The Douche (Nick Kroll) and a new character, conservative pundit Mike Patterson (Seth Morris), host of "Eagleton Now" -- to chew the fat on the topics of the day.
Not only do we learn that Perd believes Obamacare is short for Alabamacare, but we're also treated to a commercial for the Pawnee Farmers' Market After Dark, featuring the sultry Chardbodies.

NBC has already provided the world with a "Friday Night Lights"/"Parenthood" crossover thanks to its Olympics hiatus digital series "Friday Night at the Luncheonette," and now it's offering a "Parks and Recreation" web-only installment featuring a look at "The Hapley Group," a roundtable talk show "featuring Pawnee, Indiana's foremost pundits." Perd Hapley (Jay Jackson), naturally, is the host, and Joan Callamezzo (Mo Collins) is one of the guests providing absolutely no useful insight into the issues at hand. Seth Morris, new to the series, appears as Eagleton conservative Mike Patterson, and Matt Besser and Nick Kroll reprise their roles as shock jocks Crazy Ira and The Douche. It's very funny, but the commercial in the middle, for the Pawnee Farmer's Market/Chardbodies, steals the show. Check out the video below:...

"Parenthood" has seen its fair share of "Friday Night Lights" alumni make appearances on the show (both are executive produced by Jason Katims), but never have they played their characters from the beloved former NBC series. Until now.
NBC announced on Monday (Feb. 10) that "Parenthood" would be getting a four-part digital series, "Friday Night at the Luncheonette," as a way of keeping viewers engaged in the series during the 2014 Winter Olympics hiatus. The series will follow Amber (Mae Whitman) as she watches after cousin Max (Max Burkholder) while working after hours at the studio.
During her adventures, "Fnl" stars Jesse Plemons and Derek Phillips reprise their roles of Landry Clarke and Billy Riggins, respectively, showing up as the band Crucifictorious. (And presumably explaining how Billy came to be part of the band.) Phillips has appeared on "Parenthood" as a different character in the past, so continuity sticklers would be advised to look the other way.

"Go On" (Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Et on NBC), which stars Matthew Perry as a grief-group participant, has blossomed into an enjoyable little gem. I won't make any grand claims for "Go On" -- it's still way too early for that -- but what's reassuring is that I don't think the NBC comedy would make any grand claims for itself. "Go On" is just plugging along and using the strengths of its star and its talented ensemble cast judiciously to create comedy that is melancholy, surreal and pleasingly goofy. I'm eager to see more (like "Mindy," "Go On" has gotten a full-season order).
"The Mindy Project" (Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. Et on Fox), on the other hand, is a puzzling disappointment. It's not a good...

Direct from the pages of our brand new, just released, first annual, Fall TV Preview eBook appropriately titled “Thank Goodness It’s Fall” comes a closer look at NBC’s new Matthew Perry vehicle, Go On.
Premieres: Tuesdays September 11 at 9Pm on NBC (Global in Canada).
In A Nutshell: A group of wacky misfits are brought together each week by their study group… er, support group. (Just try to not compare it to a tamer Community. Double-dog dare you.)
Names You’ll Know: Something tells us you’ve heard of this young upstart, Matthew Perry (Friends), who plays sportscaster Ryan King. Laura Benanti (The Playboy Club) is the leader of the group, while such kinda-familiar faces as Julie White (Grace Under Fire), Tyler James White (Everybody Hates Chris), Sarah Baker (In Gayle We Trust) and Seth Morris (Children’S Hospital) comprise his fellow transitioners, as they’re known. As my colleague Kate Kulzick pointed out last week, NBC has chosen to use the boost in ratings they’ve gained from their exclusive Us airing of the 2012 Summer Olympics to try and give some of their new shows a running start. Among the crowd that they’re hoping gains, and retains, an audience from the Olympics are two half-hour comedies; Animal Practice, about a cranky veterinarian and the staff of his hospital, and Go On, about a sportscaster and the members of his group therapy session. Intrigued at the promise of new comedies from NBC, which has, in recent years, created interesting shows such as Community, Parks and Recreation, and 30 Rock, I decided to see what the pilots of these shows promised for the future.
Animal Practice
From first glance, this show is seemingly a tired retread of a lot of things we’ve seen before, with no real addition.

It's taken half a season of growth, but IFC's Comedy Bang! Bang! has become essential viewing for fans of the craft of comedy. Maybe not as essential as, say, Louie, which Patton Oswalt notes is the truest representation of a working comedian's lifestyle ever caught on film. But CBB is perhaps TV's most interesting comedy in terms of displaying jokes in process, in a paradoxical comedic space where even the most serendipitous improvised moments are carefully presented.
Much of that credit goes to host and creator Scott Aukerman, who has a unique perspective informed by his time as a writer and sometime cast member on the seminal Mr. Show, and his years spent developing CBB from a weekly stage show, to a local Los Angeles radio program (Comedy Death Ray Radio), to a popular podcast, and now to television. Throughout that time, Aukerman has cultivated meaningful relationships with seemingly everyone in the comedy community,...

Because animated comedy Hell & Back didn’t already boast a bulging cast list, directors Tom Gianas and Ross Shuman have added yet another name to the roster. Susan Sarandon has climbed aboard, and she’ll be voicing an angel named Barb.Hell & Back finds best mates Remy (Nick Swardson) and Augie (TJ Miller) journeying into the Inferno to rescue a mate who has accidentally been dragged down there. The voice cast includes (very deep breath) Mila Kunis, who signed on in March, Jennifer Coolidge, Rob Riggle, Danny McBride, Bob Odenkirk, Kerri Kenney, Michael Pena, David Koechner, JB Smoove, Brian Posehn, Greg Proops, Seth Morris and Jay Johnston, among others. Suffice to say, it’ll be distinctly R-rated, no-holds-barred comedy. With a script by Robot Chicken veterans Zeb Wells and Hugh Sterbakov, it’s going through the stop-motions right now and is set for release… Well, it hasn’t locked that particular detail in just yet,...

I have been listening to Comedy Bang Bang for years. The essential podcast, originally titled after the comedy show Comedy Death Ray, is run by host Scott Aukerman. Over the years, Aukerman has gotten scores of the best comedians around to come on his show, both as themselves and as characters. The result? Aural pleasure that will have you laughing out loud on the subway like a crazy person.
I was thrilled with the announcement that IFC had picked up the podcast to turn into a television show. Aukerman, along with "band leader" Reggie Watts, bring their own dose of surrealism, irreverence and fresh comedy to the show along with many of your favorite actors and comedians. I'll post the review of that soon (Spoiler Alert: It's Great).
I had to really calm myself before I interviewed Aukerman, due to the fact that I might accidentally propose marriage or offer...

Here’s the new clip for Ed Helms‘ latest comedy movie, Cedar Rapids.
Synopsis: Tim Lippe (Helms) was the guy people always thought would go places but then he just … didn’t. He’s been living in über-sleepy Brown Valley, Wisconsin his whole life, still “pre-engaged” to his 7th grade teacher Millie Vanderhei ( Sigourney Weaver), while selling insurance to protect other people’s dreams. But now, Tim’s stalled life is about to get a kick-start because, for the first time in his 34 years, he’s headed to a “major” metropolis – Cedar Rapids, Iowa – where he must try to save his company at a do-or-die insurance convention that, for him, will be entirely nonconventional.
From the minute he checks into his hotel with his ancient American Tourister and cummerbund money-belt, it’s clear Tim has no idea how the modern world really works. He is soon smitten with seductive Nebraskan...

Fox Searchlight has sent over 5 clips from director Miguel Arteta’s (Youth in Revolt) Cedar Rapids. Starring Ed Helms, John C. Reilly, Sigourney Weaver, Anne Heche, Stephen Root, Kurtwood Smith, Alia Shawkat, Mike O’Malley, Rob Corddry, and Seth Morris, the film's about a small-town Wisconsin man who travels to the big city to represent his company at a regional insurance conference. While the story isn't groundbreaking, or something that you haven't seen before, I thought the movie was really funny and it's definitely worth checking out when it gets released February 11. The main reason is the chemistry between Helms, Reilly, Heche, and Whitlock Jr. Each one had a moment to shine and Whitlock Jr. got two of the biggest laughs during the premiere at Sundance. However, John C. Reilly also has a few awesome lines that I loved. Anyway, for a taste of the film, hit the jump for the clips.
