Exclusive: Alex Holdridge and Linea Saasen, the writer/directors in Toronto with Meet Me in Montenegro, are now writing an ambitious TV series to be set in 1945 post-war Berlin.
The project, loosely titled Hour Zero, will be set in the American sector of Berlin. Saasen said: “It’s set at a time when everything is broken and in flux…It’s an interesting moment in time, it’s a city with no rules.”
The series will examine the origins of the CIA and Kgb.
Holdridge, whose previous credits include In Search of a Midnight Kiss, said that “the story will be about crazy characters, based on real people in Berlin at that time…it is such a ragtag way that the CIA was formed.”
He added: “It’s a city that’s alive because it has experienced so much death. 75% of Berlin has been levelled during the war.”

Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.

The timing might be just right for John Cassavetes Award for The Best Independent Film of 2009 winner Alex Holdridge to break into Sundance. I imagine he tried with his previous three features, Wrong Numbers (2001), Sexless (2003), and the SXSW selected In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2008), but his latest, Meet Me In Montenegro appears to be a better fit. Teamed with his dp Robert Murphy, this was filmed in Berlin, Los Angeles and the titular Montenegro and stars Rupert Friend and Deborah Ann Woll (pictured above on set).
Gist: Linnea Saasen’s screenplay sees a failed European dancer who has a chance meeting in Berlin and starts an affair despite the fact that they are moving to opposite ends of the earth. Rupert Friend plays the writer’s best friend who is in a fading relationship and toys with the idea of taking his girlfriend – played by Jennifer Ulrich (The Wave) – to a sex club.

We Are The Night Movie Review
Is it possible for a vampire film to feel really fresh anymore? I can happily report that yes, yes it can! We Are The Night (Wir sind die Nacht) is a recent vampire genre film out of Germany and despite the familiarity it felt very fresh and it was extremely entertaining.
The film felt like a mixture of The Lost Boys, Near Dark, and American late 90’s vampire films with that distinct European flavour. It ranges in classic genres too; it is part horror, part romance, part drama and part action. Director and co-writer Dennis Gansel successfully blended all these elements, and it was obvious while watching the film that this was a passion project. The film is Gansel’s own take on Camilla the gothic novella that pre-dates Dracula, a subject seen before on film but not quite in this way.

I fell in love with Alex Holdridge’s gorgeous, smart black-and-white La-set romantic comedy In Search of a Midnight Kiss when I saw it on the film festival circuit in 2007, and later interviewed Holdridge for Filmmaker when Kiss was released theatrically in 2008.
In the intervening years, Holdridge and I were in occasional contact, and through Facebook I was aware that he had left L.A. and decamped to Berlin. But little more than that.
When I read earlier this spring that he was in postproduction on his follow-up feature, Meet Me in Montenegro – a film co-written by and co-starring Holdridge himself and the Norwegian newcomer Linnea Saasen – I dropped him a line to find out more about the film and its genesis.
The following conversation is a composite of our back and forth over email and Skype.

'In Search Of A Midnight Kiss' Helmer Alex Holdridge Wraps Sophomore Feature 'Meet Me In Montenegro'
Director Alex Holdridge made a splash back in 2007 with his debut feature, "In Search of a Midnight Kiss." That distinctly indie romantic comedy was both written and directed by Holdridge, won him an Independent Spirit Award and cropped up on a number of top ten lists as well. His sophomore feature is, in some quarters at least, highly anticipated and so it's encouraging to hear that we aren't too far away from seeing it.
After a 6-week shoot in the U.S., Germany and Montenegro, Holdridge has just wrapped his sophomore film "Meet Me In Montenegro." Holdridge himself stars in the comedy as a failed American writer who has a chance encounter with a failed European dancer (newcomer Linnea Saasen, with whom Holdridge also co-wrote the script) and the two start up an affair. Keira Knightley's former beau Rupert Friend ("The Young Victoria") plays the writer's best friend who...

Female vampires just want to have fun in We Are the Night.
A stylized vampire horror movie by German director Dennis Gansel (The Wave), 2010’s We Are the Night (or Wir sind die Nacht in its native German) follows a sect of seductive female vampires that hide out in Berlin’s alternative nightclubs, enjoying the luxuries and pleasures their attained immortality provides them. Oh, and when they’re not partying, the vamps are wreaking horror and havoc on a string of unsuspecting victims.
Starring striking German actresses Karoline Herfurth, Nina Hoss, Jennifer Ulrich and Anna Fischer as a quartet of blood-sucking babes who make the Sex and the City gals look like fruit bats, We Are the Night played in theaters in Europe last year and then popped up on a couple of screens in the U.S. in May to little fanfare.

It takes a lot to make a noticeably different vampire film these days. The genre has been seemingly mined to death through the inanity that is the Twilight series to the more visceral thrills offered in the HBO adaptation of Charlaine Harris’ work in True Blood. Maybe that’s why it fell to a foreigner to offer us something messy but thought-provoking. Director Dennis Gansel conceived of his story, We are the Night back in 1996 and let is gestate in his mind before finding willing financial backers. Apparently, vamps don’t inspire moneymen in Germany so when the film failed to launch in 2006, Gansel went off to direct his acclaimed film, The Wave, and that finally got him his money.
The director says his inspiration came from the 1872 novel Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and it shows. Louise (Nina Hoss) has been seeking the reincarnation of her one true love,...

German director Dennis Gansel discusses his movies The Wave and We Are The Night, which are now available to American audiences for the first time on VOD
Director Dennis Gansel is a name most American audiences aren't familiar with, although I believe they really should be. The filmmaker made his feature debut with Girls on Top in 2001, which he followed up with the critically acclaimed Before the Fall. His two latest films, The Wave and We Are the Night, are now available in America for the first time through IFC Films' video-on-demand platform, with We Are the Night already available and The Wave hitting VOD on June 8. Both films are truly remarkable and, despite the German language and settings, have undeniable appeal to Americans.

The Wave‘s plot synopsis: “Germany today. During a project week, high school teacher Rainer Wenger (Jurgen Vogel) comes up with an experiment in order to explain to his students how totalitarian governments work. A role-playing game with tragic results begins. Within a few days, what began as harmless notions, like discipline and community, builds into a real movement: The Wave. By the third day, the students start ostracizing and threatening others. When the conflict finally erupts into violence at an intramural water polo game, the teacher decides to break off the experiment. But it’s too late. The Wave is out of control…”

We Are The Night is this cool and sleek German vampire film from director Dennis Gansel. This is definitely one of the better vampire flicks I’ve seen in a while, it has a few flaws but ranks right up there with vamp favorites like Interview With the Vampire and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It’s modernized, updated and has a story that involves a small circle of beautiful vampires.
We watch Lena (Karoline Herfurth) go from a street trash punk girl to one that gets transformed into what else, a vampire. Before all of this happens she is chased down by Detective Tom Serner (Max Riemelt) and they kind of make a quick bond, definitely a chemistry between these two. Anyway, she gets a way , something bad happens and she meets up with Louise (Nina Hoss) who becomes a mother figure of sort to Nina, with Louise is also...

Title: We Are the Night Director: Dennis Gansel Starring: Karoline Herfurth, Nina Hoss, Jennifer Ulrich, Anna Fischer, Max Riemelt Base-line expectations, just as in real life, can sometimes be a powerful determinant when it comes to movies. Given that the Twilight craze has made all things vampire hot once more, one could certainly be forgiven for settling into We Are the Night with a sleepy yawn, thinking it no more than a hollow, hyped-up European genre exercise owing its entire existence merely to a recent trend. On the contrary, German filmmaker Dennis Gansel’s movie is an engaging, well sketched, punky romp that, in telling the story of a hedonistic all-female vampire clan whose delicate balance is...

A new wave of horror is coming out of Germany, paying homage to the past while taking a very modern point of view. One of the key features in this trend is director Dennis Gansel’s We Are The Night, about a trio of beautiful female vampires—including former silent-film star Charlotte, played by Jennifer Ulrich—stalking the hotspots of Berlin.

I’ve been following the progress of director Dennis Gansel’s We Are The Night for (literally) almost a year now. The film, which has been described as a female Lost Boys, is a Berlin-based female vampire drama starring Karoline Herfurth, Nina Hoss, Jennifer Ulrich, Anna Fischer and Max Riemelt.
One night 18-year-old Lena is bitten by Louise, leader of a female vampire trio that are as deadly as they are beautiful. Her newfound vampiric lifestyle is a blessing and a curse at the same time. At first she enjoys the limitless freedom, the luxury, the parties. But soon the murderous blood lust of her comrades in arms proves too much for her, and she falls dangerously in love with Tom, a young undercover cop. When she resolves to turn her back on the bloodsucking band of sisters, Louise’s fury knows no bounds. Lena will have to choose between immortal love and immortal life…...

We Are The Night ArtThe German language film Wir sind die Nacht aka We Are the Night has a new graphic, which shows off the sexy vampires from the film. The tagline for the flick is "Immortal, Insatiable," and this short line is an obvious double entendre. In case the message is not clear in the tagline, the sparse clothing and longing looks seem to state that this will be more than your average vampire film. If you are unfamiliar with the film, a trailer is provided below, which shows a vampire trio on the movie in the dark nightlife of Berlin.
