The Picard finale was a great affair, but it could have been even bigger! Here's some of the cooler ideas that didn't make it in!
Caution: This article contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 3
Star Trek: Picard had a rough go in its first two seasons. Having Patrick Stewart back as Jean-Luc Picard was a great idea, with Star Trek fans excited to see the return of the iconic captain.
However, the first two seasons were muddled. Seeing a broken Picard looking old as he faced a Romulan plot was hampered by a confusing storyline and a lack of engaging side characters. Season 2 had the return of Q, yet it also suffered with a time travel plotline and a rushed finale.
Season 3, however, was what Star Trek fans had always wanted: A full-on reunion of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast on a grand adventure. It was everything fans could hope for,...

Star Trek: Picard may have only lasted three seasons, but how they rank is notable!
Star Trek has had more than its share of big shows over its long existence, yet Picard was still a huge one. At long last, Patrick Stewart would reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard in a series set decades after Star Trek: Nemesis. Besides showcasing Stewart, it would also rewrite the Trek universe with a new canon taking place of the old after the various shows, as well as showing how the galaxy evolved.
The show had an interesting arc, with the first two seasons seen as rough despite Stewart's fine performance as the elder Picard. The third season was hailed for being a terrific sequel to The Next Generation with some bold twists. So, here's a quick look at how each season of Star Trek: Picard ranks for anyone who wants to catch up on this series!

It's a little wild to think about how little Alison Pill's Agnes Jurati factored into the show's final season. She didn't appear at all as a character and her impact in the prior seasons was essentially erased from the timeline. She became the Borg Queen. It wasn't a good storyline to get her there, sure. She also looked awful in her full 'Borg Queen outfit' to boot.
That CGI was rough, but still. She was the Borg Queen. Yet, despite season three being about the original Borg Queen's character returning, you'd think there'd be some kind of showdown between the two. Not only did that not happen, but Jurati wasn't even mentioned it felt like. Her character made no impact on the final storyline, even though it was ripe with possibility.
So why was that? Why did they opt to undo an entire season of (bad) storytelling? Especially considering...

Everyone has their favorite "Star Trek" captain. Ever since the '90s, debates have raged as to whether Kirk could beat Picard, and once Sisko came along, all bets were off. Just as every Klingon warrior needs a cha'Dich, even the best captain needs a solid second behind them. Over the years, many have tried to follow in the footsteps of Starfleet greatness, sometimes even exceeding it. As great as the limelight is, however, the position of reliable backup can be even harder.
It's time for the first officers to shine. Who are the greatest seconds-in-command? Like asking what makes a great vice president, that can be tough. Do we want someone who can and will take over or just the very best at carrying out their orders?
For the purposes of equal ranking, we haven't included absolutely every main crew in the franchise -- the musical chairs of the...

Writer and showrunner Terry Matalas sneakily included a backdoor pilot into the final season of "Star Trek: Picard." At the end of the series, after a grand threat from the Borg has been quelled, the action fast-forwards a year for a teary epilogue. It seems that the previously roguish Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) had been rushed through Starfleet Academy and was now ready for his first starship assignment. His father (Patrick Stewart) and mother (Gates McFadden) accompanied him to his first ship, the U.S.S. Titan-a, the ship on which the bulk of "Picard" season 3 took place. But, in a fit of nostalgia, the Titan-a had been rechristened the Enterprise-g.
The Enterprise-g was commanded by Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), who had recently been recommended for captaincy by her deceased commanding officer. Seven's first officer was her ex-girlfriend Raffi (Michelle Hurd), and her crew included numerous "Picard" supporting players,...

Star Trek: Picard’s Borg Queen actor Alison Pill addresses whether she would return to the franchise, while expressing uncertainty about her character’s fate. Pill played ever-flustered Daystrom Institute cyberneticist Agnes Jurati in Picard season 1, fueling divided fan reaction. Agnes was back for season 2 despite her detractors, and saw her story take a major twist when she was assimilated by the Borg, becoming a new, potentially non-villainous Borg Queen. Picard season 4 is not yet confirmed, leaving the Borg Queen’s fate very much up in the air.
Currently starring in the down-to-earth romantic-comedy Young Werther, Pill revealed exclusively to ScreenRant that she’s keen to play Jurati/The Borg Queen again, but assured she’s not on a retainer just waiting to hear from Alex Kurtzman and company:

"Star Trek," which a very progressive franchise in many respects, has always had something of a fraught relationship with queerness. Gay or lesbian characters weren't wholly visible on the series, and dating couples tended to fall into the heteronormative. Near the end of his life in the early 1990s, "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry once idly mused that he'd like to depict two background male characters holding hands in a romantic way, but that's hardly a great spearhead for a progressive ideal.
There were occasional attempts to include queer stories in "Star Trek" throughout the 1990s, but they were few and far between. The "Next Generation" episode "The Outcast" was controversial even at the time (and one can read all about "The Outcast" in the pages of /Film), and the "Deep Space Nine" episode "Rejoined" did allow Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) to have a romantic relationship with a woman, but...

Michael Dorn has been a part of Star Trek since Star Trek: The Next Generation began in 1987. His most recent appearance was on the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard. He is the one actor who has appeared the most in Star Trek, but that might be coming to an end as the Dorn, in an interview in Star Trek Explorer Magazine, says "I actually am slowly but surely retiring." [via Trekmovie]
This isn't good news to those fans who are still hoping for a Star Trek: Legacy series and who wanted to see more of Worf and Raffi's [Michelle Hurd] undercover work, but if anyone deserves retirement, it's Dorn, whose first role dates back to the 1960s when he appeared on Days of Our Lives.

Jeri Ryan has confirmed that she was offered a role in a spin-off series of Star Trek: Picard that was not the rumored Star Trek: Legacy, but chose not to accept it. The proposed Star Trek: Legacy would focus on Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), Lt. Sidney La Forge (Ashley Sharpe Chestnut), and Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), on the newly rechristened USS Enterprise-g along with returning Next Generation characters.
Per TrekMovie, Ryan appeared at a panel with her Star Trek: Voyager co-stars Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill at Spacecon in San Antonio, TX, and she was asked about the future of Seven of Nine. Specifically, she was asked if there were any plans for a Seven of Nine show, to which she replies that there had been. She stated that she was pitched her own show after Picard ended, though it was not Star Trek: Legacy.

The most unbalanced show in the lineup of Nu Trek shows has got to be Star Trek: Picard. When the show worked, it was fantastic, but it didn't work often. Its use of creative characters like Elnor and Soji Asha felt lacking and uninspired, even though the characters themselves lent themselves to much grander story ideas. Its creativity, or lack thereof, for the returning cast of The Next Generation, didn't help matters, as the only thing that kept the last season of the show going was the interest in the nostalgia of it all.
Yet, despite all that, it was a show that had tremendous hype season after season. It had more to do with the returning stars of yesterday, but it had the hype. Fans gave it a chance. It just didn't work. Once the nostalgia wore off, the excitement was gone. There isn't a lot of demand for a fourth season of Picard.

Although "Star Trek: Voyager" concluded in 2001, multiple characters from the series have returned throughout the franchise at large to remind Trekkies that they all still exist and are still going about their Starfleet careers. Both Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Tuvok (Tim Russ) appeared on "Star Trek: Picard," with the former playing a regular role on the series. The reference-heavy "Star Trek: Lower Decks" makes "Voyager" references all the time, and even had an episode set on board the U.S.S. Voyager.
Most notably, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) not only had a cameo in the 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," but a holographic version of the character played a large role in the animated series "Star Trek: Prodigy." That same show also featured the real-life Janeway, the Doctor (Robert Picardo), as well as a subplot involving Chakotay (Robert Beltran), the captain of the experimental ship the U.S.S.

The changeover from Star Trek: Picard's second and third seasons frankly "saved" the show's reputation. Now, it's still not the best show in franchise history, far from it. It's still a bad show. The third season was a mess, with convoluted story notes, terribly written character interactions, and a desire to tear down some of the greatest characters in history. It was very much Star Trek's version of the modern Star Wars trilogy; an entity that just wanted to live off of nostalgia, but not knowing how.
Just like with the new Star Wars films, all Picard tried to do was two things; develop enough content for a spinoff, and find ways to bring back iconic concepts that were better off being left 30 years in the past. It failed, in many ways. Some fans loved the nostalgia-bait that they were given but upon further review, the third season doesn't cut the mustard,...

When season three of Star Trek: Picard began, there were some missing faces. Some, we didn't expect to see as their stories wrapped up in season two, like Captain Cristobal Rios [Santiago Carbrera] who chose to remain the past. Isa Briones's Soji character only returned briefly for season two and Briones played an entirely different character who ended up going with Wil Wheaton's Traveler. We're not quite sure what happened to Evan Evagora's Elnor, but Allison Pill's Dr. Agnes Jurati joined with the Borg Queen who became a benevolent form...at least for that queen.

Michael Dorn, who has had more on-screen appearances playing the same character in the Star Trek franchise, playing the Klingon Worf said he didnt commit to appearing in Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard just for the money. Per CinemaBlend, the actor recently appeared on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, and discussed returning for the final season of Picard, which aired in 2023 on Paramount+.
Dorn portrayed Worf, a Klingon ultimately raised by human parents, in 272 television episodes between Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and four feature films. Worf was the first Klingon character to be part of the main cast of a Star Trek series, as the race was enemies of the Federation in the original series.

Star Trek: Picard shook things up by bringing back The Next Generation crew in seasons two and three, and stunning Star Trek fans. Season one had a mix of characters like Riker, Data, and Troi, but season three saw even more familiar faces like Beverly Crusher, Worf, and Geordi La Forge join Picard.

Worf (Michael Dorn), like many of TV's "tough guy" characters, spends more time getting his butt kicked than kicking butt. Through Dorn's imposing performance, fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" fans understand that Worf is not only ready to step in and protect the Enterprise with only a split-second notice, but that he is also perfectly capable in a fight. Worf is often seen practicing martial arts, engaging in phaser target practice, or honing his skills with a bat'leth.
However, whenever an intruder or villain actually does appear on the Enterprise, the makers of "Next Generation" have to demonstrate how threatening they are by showing them thrashing poor Worf. Oh no, the audience thinks in those moments, this new intruder is so strong, they can just fling Worf aside like a paper doll. Even before the third and final season of "Star Trek: Picard" finished airing on Paramount+ in 2023, showrunner Terry Matalas was speaking openly about wanting to make a spinoff called "Star Trek: Legacy." The return of Jean-Luc Picard to the Star Trek universe was always meant to be a three-season affair. The second season was filmed during the height of the pandemic, and went through many iterations under the direction of three executive producers. In more ways than one, it was a tonal shift from the seasons on either side of it. How critics and fans ranked every episode of Star Trek: Picard Season 2 shows how challenging and contentious the middle chapter of this saga was. The story explored time travel, introduced an alternate timeline, and was bookended by a massively important moment in Starfleet's present.
Picard Season 2 was an emotionally heavy season with a clear political point of view and a sense of fun that comes with setting sci-fi characters in the contemporaneous present. In both the special features of The Complete Star Trek: Picard...

M. Night Shyamalan, the Titan of the Twist, is set to return this summer with a crazy-looking new thriller called Trap. It’s about a father, played by Josh Hartnett, who takes his daughter to a big pop concert, spots the cops surrounding the arena, and learns they’re laying a “trap” (that’s the name of the movie) to catch a serial killer called “The Butcher,” who’s believed to be in attendance.

It's been a year since Star Trek: Picard took the franchise by storm and delivered a spectacular final adventure for the Next Generation crew in its third and final season. Along with its satisfying conclusion, the Picard series finale also set up a tantilizing opportunity for a spin-off following the newly promoted Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and her crew, including Raffi (Michelle Hurd) as her first officer and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) as her special advisor. The spin-off, tentatively titled Star Trek: Legacy, has not yet been greenlit at Paramount+, but has seen an abundance of fan support, akin to the letterwriting campaign that saved the franchise from oblivion in the first place.

Raffi and Seven's relationship gets complicated in Star Trek: Picard season 3, with Seven becoming Captain of the USS Enterprise-g. Michelle Hurd hopes to see more representation of addiction struggles and LGBTQ+ issues in the Star Trek universe through Raffi and Seven. The potential spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy, may explore more romances, including Jack Crusher and Ensign Sidney La Forge, alongside Raffi and Seven.
Star Trek: Picard star Michelle Hurd has some ideas about how the story of Commander Raffi Musiker and Jeri Ryan's Captain Seven of Nine should continue. Raffi and Seven both joined the cast of Picard in season 1, and the two began exploring a romantic relationship at the end of the season. In Picard season 2, Raffi and Seven traveled back in time with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) to Los Angeles in 2024. Michael Dorn and Marina Sirtis are eager to see Captain Worf and Commander Raffi in a spinoff series due to their successful partnership. Worf and Raffi's chemistry in Star Trek: Picard season 3 has left fans hopeful for a potential spinoff, potentially in 'Star Trek: Legacy'. While 'Star Trek: Legacy' remains hypothetical, a Worf and Raffi series could be a more cost-effective way to continue their story.
Star Trek: Picard actors Michael Dorn and Marina Sirtis want to see Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) and Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) in a spinoff because their team-up "really worked". In Picard season 3, Raffi Musiker becomes First Officer to Captain Seven of Nine, hinting at a potential romance resumption between the characters. Michelle Hurd teases the complicated "Facebook relationship" status between Raffi and Seven, suggesting they may not be on the same page. Picard season 3 only briefly touches upon the dynamic between Raffi and Seven, leaving fans wondering about their relationship moving forward.

At the very end of the first season of "Star Trek: Picard," after the story had concluded and everyone was headed back home, the violent bounty hunter Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Admiral Picard's close friend Raffi (Michelle Hurd) sat idly conversing. They reached out and began romantically holding hands, implying that the characters were initiating a romance. Previously throughout "Star Trek," both Seven and Raffi had only been seen having romances with men, so their respective bisexuality came as a pleasant surprise.
Sadly, at the start of the second season of "Picard," enough time had passed that Seven and Raffi had already dated for a while ... and had broken up. There was now a great deal of romantic resentment between them, and they had to struggle to fulfill their mission in the 21st century (the second season featured a time travel plot). The third season of "Star Trek: Picard," overseen by showrunner Terry Matalas, ended with an intriguing new setup. After the season's story had concluded, the action fast-forwarded one year to when Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) had become a provisionary ensign in Starfleet. Jack, with his father (Patrick Stewart) and mother (Gates McFadden), took a good long gander at his new assignment, the Titan-a, newly rechristened the Enterprise-g. This new ship was to be captained by Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), formerly the first officer on board the Titan-a, and the vessel was poised to go on its first deep-space mission with its new name.
Also on board were Raffi (Michelle Hurd), Seven's ex-girlfriend and also her first officer, as well as former Titan crewmembers Lieutenant Matthew Arliss Mura (Joseph Lee), Ensign Kova Rin Esmar (Jin Maley), and presumably Dr. Ohk (Tiffany Shepis). While Paramount+ has recently said goodbye to one Star Trek series (Picard) and will be to another this year (Discovery), there are other projects coming — and one that fans and stars hope joins that list. So, of course, when TV Insider caught up with Picard‘s Michelle Hurd on the red carpet for Law & Order: Svu‘s 25th season celebration — she left the NBC drama in its second season — we had to ask about possibly seeing her as Raffi again. “I love Raffi. To begin with a brief editorial: the unbinding of special effects ultimately harms "Star Trek."
One of the reasons Trekkies become attached to certain characters, or fall in love with the workspaces on various ships and space stations is because the shows spend so much time with them. There are many, many episodes of "Star Trek" that take place entirely on board the Enterprise, and fans — long paying attention — begin to know its geography. After enough time watching a Starfleet vessel, viewers feel like they could, if they should be magically transported there, find their way around.
Taking "Star Trek" away from a starship for too long can, quite tragically, rob a show of a vital sense of place. We, as Trekkies, need to see what everyday life is like on a starship and see what a "normal boring" day looks like before we can appreciate the depth of a crisis.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 was a success, with the Tng crew wrapping up their story and hinting at more adventures to come. The long-rumored Picard spin-off, Star Trek: Legacy, has not been confirmed, but there is interest from the show's creators and fans. Characters like Riker, Geordi, Crusher, Data, Q, the La Forge sisters, Captain Shaw, Raffi, Jack Crusher, and Seven of Nine have the potential to continue their stories in future Star Trek projects.
Star Trek: Picard season 3 was a resounding success, and while the series nicely ended the story of the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, there are some characters we desperately want to see again. Picard season 3 brought the Tng icons back together for one final adventure aboard the rebuilt USS Enterprise-d. Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew saved the Federation from a Changeling/Borg takeover, with help from some returning friends and some new faces.

Do you remember how great it felt when Jean-Luc Picard stepped onto the bridge of the restored USS Enterprise-d, with all the members of his senior staff around him and ready for one last adventure? Remember how much better that was than watching Icheb from Voyager get mutilated or watching Picard ride dune buggies in Star Trek: Nemesis? Patrick Stewart does not.
In a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stewart talked about an upcoming Star Trek movie centered on at least part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast. “I heard only last night about a script that is being written, but written specifically with the actor, Patrick, to play in it,” Stewart told host Josh Horowitz. “And I’ve been told to expect to receive it within a week or so.”

Terry Matalas regretted the lack of romance in season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, despite opportunities for romantic subplots between various characters. Patrick Stewart had a different ending in mind that would have addressed Matalas' regret, showing Jean-Luc Picard with a romantic partner in the final scene. Unfortunately, the planned ending was never shot due to scheduling conflicts, and the actual final scene focused on the crew enjoying a poker game, leaving the season ultimately unromantic.

At the conclusion of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," after the villains had been defeated, showrunner Terry Matalas had properly and carefully set up another "Star Trek" spinoff series, should Paramount+ have wanted it. Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) had received a posthumous recommendation for a captaincy from her late commanding officer Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) and was put in command of the U.S.S. Titan-a, now newly rechristened the U.S.S. Enterprise-g. One can perhaps assume that the rechristening was a special favor for the aging Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) now over 100 and happy to have a legacy.

The three-season run of Star Trek: Picard provided an epilogue for, perhaps, the most important captains of the Enterprise. Sure, James T. Brannon Braga, executive producer of Star Trek: Voyager, expressed surprise at the direction of Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard, but acknowledged that it might have been better than his own ideas. Jeri Ryan's return as Seven of Nine in Picard was highly anticipated by fans, especially as her character had never interacted with Admiral Picard before.
