The E. W. Scripps Company’s Court TV and Scripps News are partnering on a live television special that will examine the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and his alleged murderer Luigi Mangione.
The special, called “Assassination of a CEO,” marks the first full co-production between Court TV and Scripps News, the company said in a statement. The two channels have shared news reporters and resources in the past to cover crime and legal stories and events, but have not produced a television show together until now.
The special will take a deep dive into Thompson’s assassination earlier this month, which happened outside a New York City hotel just hours before UnitedHealthcare was to hold an investor’s conference. The public execution made international headlines and triggered a multi-state manhunt, which ended on December 9 when Mangione was apprehended at a fast food restaurant in Pennsylvania.

(Updated with Reelz statement) More than two years after pulling the plug on Live Pd, A&e now wants to lock up and throw away the key on the revival series On Patrol: Live.
“Without any authorization from Aetn, Big Fish [the show’s former producer] created a clone of Live Pd featuring the same primary hosts, content, format, segments, and more, and sold that virtually identical show to Reelz, a cable network seeking its first breakout hit, which then aired the show over Aetn’s repeated and vociferous objections,” says a blistering copyright-infringement complaint (read it here) filed Tuesday in federal court by A&e Television Networks against producers MGM-owned Big Fish, Half Moon Pictures and Reelz itself.
Appealing to forthcoming judges and juries, A&e is seeking a variety of damages and profits out of this action. Perhaps even more penalizing, the plaintiff also desires to see On Patrol: Live and any other...

A&e is heading to court, live.
The cable network has ordered Court Night Live, a reality series that will bring live trials to television.
The series comes from Big Fish Entertainment, the company behind controversial series Live Pd. Although it will air on Wednesday nights at 9pm, starting August 10, rather than on Friday and Saturday nights, Court Night Live appears to be the network’s spiritual successor to live cops series.
Summer Premiere Dates For New & Returning Series On Broadcast, Cable & Streaming
Deadline revealed that Live Pd, which was one of the highest rated series on cable, was canceled in June 2020, in the wake of George Floyd’s death and after a controversy that video allegedly captured by the Live Pd crew of the death of Javier Ambler during a police stop had been destroyed.
A Live Pd successor On Patrol: Live recently premiered to strong numbers on Reelz.

Having canceled “Live P.D.” in 2020, A&e is returning to the live docu-reality TV space — but this time, the network is trading order for law. A&e is set to launch “Court Night Live,” from former “Live Pd” producers Big Fish Entertainment, next Wednesday, August 10 at 9 p.m. Et.
“Court Night Live” will operate under a similar format to “Live Pd,” featuring hosts as they shift from multiple cities to watch live action as it takes place — but this time via “pop-up courtrooms” in Philadelphia, Tampa, and Chicago. The show is hosted by Vinnie Politan and TV vet Judge Greg Mathis, while retired Judge Vonda Evans will provide analysis.
Much like pre-taped daytime court shows, “Court Night Live” doesn’t take place in actual courtrooms, but feature people are taking their cases out of traditional courtrooms to be resolved on the show. Politan, Mathis, and Evans will provide context to the civil cases,...

Court TV will carry the televised feed of the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial, which is scheduled to begin next week in Fairfax County, Va.
The network will be the pool feed provider for the trial, and plans to provide coverage of the proceedings.
Ethan Nelson, Acting Head of Court TV, said in a statement, “Court cases that are as high-profile as this one often create a lot of noise, and it can be difficult for viewers to break through these distractions to have a clear picture of the facts, but that’s where we come in.”
Depp filed a 50 million defamation suit against Heard after she wrote a Washington Post essay in 2018, headlined “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” Although the essay didn’t mention Depp by name, he claims that it damaged his reputation and cost...

Court TV is about to make history. Starting May 4, the Supreme Court of the United States will provide the network and select members of the news media access to live Supreme Court oral arguments.
The Supreme Court’s move to allow live audio of its oral arguments is historic — the court rarely releases same-day audio and typically waits until the end of the week to release audio from its oral arguments from the prior days. Court TV is back in session. The cable TV channel that once carried gavel-to-gavel live coverage of high-profile trials will be revived by a new owner, nearly a dozen years after it was shuttered by Turner Broadcasting.
Katz Networks, a division of E.W. Scripps Co., plans to revive Court TV as a new channel designed to be distributed via local TV stations as a multicast offering as well as by MVPDs and streaming platforms starting in May. Katz has acquired the Court TV moniker and some 100,000 hours of vintage Court TV programming from Turner, now owned by At&T.

Court TV is set to return to television via Katz Networks, which is part of The E.W. Scripps Company, in May 2019. The new 24/7 version will be available for cable, satellite, over-the-air and over-the-top carriage.
The original Court TV signed off in 2008. Before then, it ran for more than 20 years and gained mainstream attention for providing gavel-to-gavel coverage of the O.J. Simpson, the Menendez brothers, and Casey Anthony murder trials.
“Court TV was a Top-20 cable network and at the height of its popularity when the network was taken off the air in 2008,” said Jonathan Katz, president and CEO of Katz Networks. “Today, while consumer interest in the real-life drama of true-crime programming is at an all-time high, there is no dedicated daily court coverage on television. We expect the new Court TV to fill that void on cable, satellite, over-the-air and over-the-top.”

Court TV, the iconic TV brand known for broadcasting the trials of O.J. Simpson, the Menendez Brothers and Casey Anthony, will relaunch under its old name with a new backer.
Katz Networks, a unit of the E.W. Scripps Co. which operates multicast networks like Bounce, Escape and Grit, will relaunch Court TV in May 2019. Just as it did when it was owned by Turner Broadcasting, the network will be devoted to live, gavel-to-gavel coverage, legal reporting and expert analysis of trials across the country. It also brought in original Court TV anchor Vinnie Politan as lead anchor and installed former Court TV and CNN producers John Alleva and Scott Tufts as vice presidents and managing editors.

Vinnie Politan, host of Hln's Prime News, rebounded nicely from a Tuesday night low of 45,000 viewers in the 25-54 year-old demo to capture his second straight second-place finish in the 6 p.m. time slot, besting Al Sharpton and John King with 208,000 demo viewers on Friday night (he pulled 204,000 on Thursday). In fact, Politan's demo numbers were behind just Rachel Maddow's for the highest among non-fox News shows. Cable news ratings, June 29, 2011: •On Wednesday night, with the defense case winding down in the Casey Anthony murder trial, Hln's 5 p.m. Special Report with Vinnie Politan had the network's biggest ratings of the night: 2,687,000 total viewers (and 728,000 viewers 25-54), almost exactly a million more viewers than Fox News' Glenn Beck, who had a total audience of 1,691,000 (and 377,000 in the demo). A couple days ago on truTV's In Session, anchor Vinnie Politan questioned Casey Anthony's choice of wardrobe, diplomatically describing her shirt as being too "clingy" for a murder trial. However, a few minutes later, an open microphone seemed to capture his less guarded thoughts. As Anthony was asked by her defense attorney, Jose Baez to stand up, Politan seems to be heard saying "The only thing you are going to see are her boobs sticking out."...
