Let's face it: We all need a good laugh — now more than ever.
“Laughing is one of the most fundamental, foundational human joys, if not the fundamental foundational joy,” says Eric Ledgin, showrunner and co-creator of St. Denis Medical, NBC's hit medical mockumentary. “So whatever the subject matter is, if you're a comedy and you're not at least trying to make people laugh, I don't think you're doing it right. And I think that audiences are really feeling the craving for that.”
Ledgin recently took the stage at SXSW's Film & TV Festival alongside Universal Television's EVP of comedy development Jim Donnelly to chart the series' comedic creative journey in a panel titled "Pitch to Screen," moderated by Gold Derby's editor-in-chief.
Making people laugh, though, has become harder than ever. “Audiences are very savvy right now,” says Donnelly. “You’re not just competing with everything else that’s currently being produced,...

The following contains major spoilers for St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 12, "Buffalo Bruce and Matty the Kid," which debuted Tuesday, Feb. 18 on NBC.
St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 12, "Buffalo Bruce and Matty the Kid," will be remembered as the one with the plague cat. The NBC sitcom isn't quite as lovably strange as usual -- but this episode written by Mythic Quest alum Naomi Ekperigin still has some good laughs built into it. More interestingly, the subplot involving Serena's birthday gets surprisingly saccharine.
"Buffalo Bruce and Matty the Kid" focuses on Bruce and Matt being assigned to capture an emotional support cat that's running loose around the hospital. Like everything at St. Denis, this doesn't go according to plan, which is where most of the humor comes from. Yet the episode is a bit awkward when it delves into more emotional territory.

With so many streamers and shows going on, it's hard to think you might run out of something to watch. But just because we have such a variety, that doesn't mean everything is going to pique your interest. And I definitely don't blame you. I go through stages where the same happens to me!
If you strictly stick to streaming shows, you may not be watching what broadcast has to offer. However since everything is added to the online platforms as well after their debut on TV, that means you can still enjoy broadcast series' through a streamer. And here, we've got 6 NBC shows you should be watching on Peacock right now. Let's get into it!

There's the staples on NBC like the One Chicago shows and Law and Order franchise. And while those are good, we're here to focus on some other series' you may not have given a shot yet.

The acclaimed medical drama starring Zachary Quinto recently concluded its first season earlier this month.
It’s a wrap on the first season of NBC’s “Brilliant Minds,” its brainy new medical drama starring Zachary Quinto, which following a brief December hiatus recently aired its two-episode finale. Inspired by the works of Oliver Sacks, “Brilliant Minds” stars Quinto in his first main live-action TV series role since “Nosferatu” by another name, AMC’s “NOS4A2.”
The “Star Trek” star plays Dr. Oliver Wolf, an eccentric and gifted neurologist with facial blindness whose condition gives him a unique perspective on care. Alongside his brilliant team of interns at Bronx General and through unconventional methods, he takes on some of the world’s most puzzling psychological and neurological cases.
It’s still uncertain if there will be a second season of “Brilliant Minds,” but the first season of the series has been a hit for the network.

NBC's uproarious new comedy series St. Denis Medical takes viewers into the world of a woefully underfunded hospital, and now the mockumentary will return for a second season. Created for the small screen by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer, St. Denis Medical follows in the tradition of The Office and concerns the staff of a hospital in Oregon as their day-to-day activities are being recorded by a documentary crew. Though hardly the first series to spoof the high-tension world of medicine, St. Denis Medical deftly uses the mockumentary format to add new wrinkles to classic hospital humor.
Early reviews praised St. Denis Medical for distancing itself from The Office, despite being in the same popular sub-genre of comedy that has spawned other hits like Abbott Elementary. This unique approach to the familiar is perhaps the show's strongest aspect, and it is just recognizable enough to grab regular audiences while...

For reasons known only to the power players of the Sub-Saharan African TV markets, Justin Spitzer’s six-season NBC sitcom Superstore is getting a Zulu-language remake. I guess something about America Ferreira must have clicked with South Africans.
While Superstore may not have reached the zeitgeist-defining heights of other NBC comedies like The Office (U.S.) or Parks and Recreation, the comedy about a Walmart-equivalent megastore and its diverse and delightful employees was a worthwhile take on the workplace comedy genre that resonated with big-box retail workers across America. Superstore ran from 2015 to 2021 to critical and audience acclaim before sailing off into the sunset with a Covid-centered final season that remains one of the few and best examples of TV writers pulling off a pandemic storyline that doesn’t completely suck.

The medical drama has been popular for a long time. Several of network TV's longest-running procedural series have been in the medical genre. This includes ER, and an Emmy-winning series that ran from 1994 to 2009. Overlapping partially with this time frame was Grey's Anatomy, which began in 2005. Grey's has dominated television ever since, even prompting the spinoff series Station 19. Grey's Anatomy season 21 is in its mid-season break right now, and will return in March.
While long-standing medical dramas like these have fascinated audiences, it can be even more interesting when new shows come in to shake things up in this genre. Last year, for example, saw the release of Doctor Odyssey. The Ryan Murphy-created show took a more comedic approach to the medical procedural, taking place on a luxury cruise ship with a bumbling lead who clashes with his staff. This was met with mixed results, as Doctor Odyssey...

The doctors and nurses of St. Denis Medical will remain on call at NBC.
The network has ordered a second season of the comedy series, a mockumentary following the overworked staff at an underfunded hospital in Oregon. The renewal comes as the show is set to return from hiatus Tuesday night for the second half of its season.
St. Denis Medical is the first of NBC’s rookie series to earn a renewal for the 2025-26 season. NBC’s freshman series St. Denis Medical has been renewed for a second season ahead of tonight’s midseason premiere.

An acclaimed NBCsitcom is getting the remake treatment. Although a few genre-defining comedies on the network have steadfastly avoided going through a revival or a reboot, such as Friends and Seinfeld, another influential comedy has had several iterations. The Office originated as a British workplace sitcom, spearheaded by Ricky Gervais. Still, following the global reach of the U.S. version, more country-specific offshoots have popped up.
There are several remakes of The Office, including versions that recreate standout scenes from the original. There has also been the recent Australian take on The Office for Prime Video, which went in a different direction by casting a female character in the bumbling Michael Scott role. A more recent well-liked NBC workplace comedy is getting a remake, albeit only the second.

Exclusive: There’s a new Superstore opening in Africa.
African streamer Showmax has ordered a local version of the NBCUniversal format show, which began life exactly ten years ago, when NBC picked up a pilot for the U.S. sitcom.
Showmax’s will be a Zulu-language adaptation produced locally by Barkers Media, which is known for shows such as Killer Front Page, Shebeen Queens and How to Manifest a Man in association with Universal International Studios. Production is set to begin this year.
The U.S. version, created by Justin Spitzer (The Office) ran for six seasons, starring America Ferrera and Ben Feldman among an ensemble cast of workers at mid-American superstore Cloud 9. St. Denis Medical has certainly seen a lot six episodes into its freshman run on NBC, but the next one could be the most chaotic yet. Ahead of the episode's airing, Cbr can unveil an exclusive sneak peek at the cold open, teasing the madness that happens when inmates arrive for treatment from a nearby prison.
The episode, titled "50 cc's of Kindness," is set to air on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 8 p.m. on NBC. In the sneak peek clip, Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Ron (David Alan Grier), and Alex (Allison Toman) attempt to take control with treating two prisoners who've been rushed in after an apparently violent incident took place at the prison. Of course, as also teased in the cold open, the inmates use much more "colorful" language than the patients that the medical staff are typically tending to. Check out the clip below.

Justin Spitzer's irreverent, beautifully weird workplace comedy "Superstore," which ran from 2015 to 2021, shared some traits with other popular "office" sitcoms like "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "Parks and Recreation," and, well, "The Office" — if any of those shows had a running gag about finding severed feet in their respective workplaces, that is. So why did the show end after its sixth season?
The answer is both simple and complicated if I'm being honest; a major star made the choice to leave the series behind for new opportunities, and a global pandemic put a damper on pretty much all human interaction and work for a while. Let's back up for one moment, though. "Superstore," true to its name, takes place in a fictional big-box store called Cloud 9 — which certainly bears some similarities to Targets and Walmarts across the country — and in a particular branch in St. Louis, Missouri that happens to be...

When it comes to sitcoms, the entertainment industry has no shortage of them. However, there are only a handful that continue to dominate the sphere when it comes to acclaim and popularity while others take a backseat in from of their spotlight. Hence, sitcoms like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Modern Family, and The Office usually end up at the forefront.

Rowan Mayfair returns in Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches season 2, which premieres January 5 on AMC. Part of the burgeoning Immortal Universe, the popular show expands on the supernatural world that began with Interview with the Vampire. Alexandra Daddario plays Rowan, a gifted neurosurgeon who can't quite explain her uncanny ability to heal or hurt. After reuniting with her birth family in season 1, she discovers that she is part of a lineage of witches to whom a spirit named Lasher has been attached for generations.
Mayfair Witches season 1 ended with Rowan giving into her calling as Lasher's chosen witch and literally giving birth to him in human form. While he grows at lightning speed, her powers grow with him, but the demon made flesh leaves a trail of blood that may be too high a price for Rowan to pay. Her attempt to maneuver motherhood dovetails with her father Cortland's...

NBC and Peacock's new sitcom St. Denis Medical is a mockumentary workplace comedy set in an underfunded Oregon hospital and is sure to cure your woes, at least according to critics. It avoids the tropes of other medical shows that tend to focus on flashy doctors and major crises, instead primarily focusing on nurses — the unsung heroes that keep the hospital running.
A perfectly cast Allison Tolman (Fargo) stars as a workaholic supervising nurse and mom who keeps the ER running; Wendi McLendon-Covey (a familiar face to fans of The Goldbergs and Reno 911!) plays the administrative bigwig who's focused more on accolades than patient care; and David Alan Grier takes on the role of a curmudgeonly doctor. Kahyun Kim, Josh Lawson, Kaliko Kauahi, and Mekki Leeper fill out the rest of the archetypes, including a nurse with a wild streak, a self-idolizing surgeon, and a Montana transplant with a strict...

Allison Tolman became a breakout star in the first season of FX's Fargo, and then cracked up audiences voicing Pam's sister Edie Poovey in Archer. Her newest role as Alex in NBC's hit comedy St. Denis Medical is another change of pace for the Emmy and Golden Globe nominee. It's a chance for her to play the proverbial "straight man" to everyone else's more oddball characters -- even if Alex happens to be a workaholic with her own quirks.
In an interview with Cbr, Tolman explained why Alex is so close to her heart, and what it was about St. Denis Medical that brought her on board. She also explains her love of mockumentary sitcoms and how it prepared her for starring in one. And learn why she enjoys being on the set even when she's not filming a scene!

Mike Schur, who worked as a writer and producer on The Office, said the 2008 “The Japanese Office” Saturday Night Live short “didn’t feel right” to him. Per the Hollywood Reporter, Schur, who worked on 71 episodes of the iconic NBC series, talked about the Office-inspired SNL skit during a visit with The Lonely Island and Seth Meyer Podcast.

The Office is often regarded as a pioneer in sitcom television, but it is not without its faults. Developed by Greg Daniels, the workplace mockumentary has some weak moments during its nine-season run, making The Office just miss out on perfection. However, these imperfections act as a reminder that The Office's upcoming reboot must be given an opportunity to grow. Steve Carell and the ensemble cast are a masterclass in comedy, and after years of speculation, a reboot has officially been greenlit by Peacock after its addition to streaming platforms helped The Office find new audiences.
The Office producer has weighed in on the reboot, with Justin Spitzer remaining very optimistic about its future. The upcoming reboot will be set within the same universe as the original show, and will follow the same documentary crew that brought us the adventures of the Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch. Abbott Elementary revived the mockumentary sitcom genre in 2021, resulting in St. Denis Medical in 2024, and allowing the newer show to emulate one of the older series' storylines (but with its own twist). The NBC medical comedy, co-created by Justin Spitzer of Superstore fame and Eric Ledgin, follows the doctors and nurses at St. Denis Medical Center in Oregon. Similar to other mockumentary sitcoms, the St. Denis Medical characters are eccentric, unique, and hilarious, forming a group with great chemistry. The series takes advantage of its cast's dynamics, just like Abbott Elementary does.

The series will return with season 1, episode 7 on Tuesday, January 14 at 8 p.m. Et. NBC's medical sitcom follows "an eclectic team of underfunded yet dedicated doctors, nurses and hospital staff, who want nothing more than to turn the hospital into an international medical destination." However, not everyone in the series shares the same approach to care.
Among the bunch is Bruce, a talented trauma surgeon whose lack of awareness often makes him appear harsh. Josh Lawson (Superstore), who plays the character, admits that his attitude does put him at risk of being too mean. It was important to the actor to make it known that Bruce never intends to hurt others, as his actions come from a place of ignorance rather than cruelty.

Wendi McLendon-Covey is a very funny woman. That’s a statement backed up by facts. She starred as Beverly in ABC’s “The Goldbergs” for 10 seasons — a runtime that seems downright shocking in an era dominated by two to three season hits — and has starred in every kind of buzzy comedy from mainstream blockbusters like “Bridesmaids” to ambitious critical darlings like “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” This is all to say that McLendon-Covey knows comedy.
And right now she’s frustrated by it.
“I want to choose my words carefully. I’m an enthusiastic TV watcher and I love comedies. But can we take big swings again?” McLendon-Covey asked TheWrap. “Audiences are getting bored, and they are way more sophisticated than we think they are.”
McLendon-Covey cited Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson’s 2009 Comedy Central show “Broad City” as one of the “top five funniest things I’ve ever seen.

After many years of medical sitcoms that have only gone on to last one or two seasons, NBC's St. Denis Medical has all the makings of the best hospital comedy since Scrubs. St. Denis Medical has been a breakout hit for NBC, but its overlap with beloved sitcom Superstore could prematurely stunt its growth. Both series were created by Justin Spitzer (with Eric Ledgin co-creating NBC’s modern sitcom). But while St. Denis Medical’s cast of characters is talented, some names are familiar to the point of being a double-edged sword. Having multiple actors recognizable for a single role in a different show is risky for the medical workplace mockumentary that’s still trying to set itself apart from contemporaries.
On a basic level, the small connection makes NBC’s newest comedy an appealing show for Superstore fans, but it almost guarantees that St. Denis Medical will never be more than a Superstore replacement. In that sense, the medical comedy will always live in its predecessor’s shadow. Since there’s yet to be a confirmed order for St. Denis Medical...

Superstore, which has been off the air for more than three years, is sorely missed, but the good news is that NBC released the show's best replacement series in the fall of 2024. The original sitcom premiered in November 2015 and was beloved by many, as proven by its impressive run on NBC and 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Superstore ultimately produced six seasons and 113 episodes before it came to an end in March 2021. While it would be difficult for any TV show to follow in Superstore's footsteps, one 2024 workplace comedy has the chops to do so.
A few months before the Superstore series finale, a spinoff, Bo & Cheyenne, was said to be in the early stages of development at NBC. As the title suggests, it would have featured Johnny Pemberton and Nichole Sakura reprising their Superstore roles as Bo and Cheyenne, respectively. However, NBC later decided not to go forward with the spinoff.

In the third act of “St. Denis Medical’s” fourth episode, “Salamat You Too,” a group of nurses are on break when the head nurse, Alex (Allison Tolman), interrupts to gently reprimand their previous insubordination. Earlier, the self-identified “Filipino Mafia” didn’t like when Alex split up their “clique,” so they simply ignored her orders and stuck together. Then, in an effort to reestablish her authority, Alex walks to the dry-erase board and tries to remind her colleagues that she’s the boss — a simple declaration that nevertheless requires a six-part written breakdown (including one particularly abstract acronym).
Alex is the focal point of the scene. Abbott Elementary has revived the mockumentary genre on network TV, opening the door for other shows to join in on the fun, including one new, critically acclaimed NBC series that premiered in 2024. Quinta Brunson's ABC comedy show follows a group of teachers (and a principal and a janitor) who work at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School in Philadelphia. Similar to the mockumentaries that came before it (like The Office and Parks and Rec), Abbott Elementary is filmed like a documentary, meaning the characters often talk to or look into the camera.
Abbott Elementary has been nominated for and won many awards, including the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Quinta Brunson and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Mockumentary sitcoms have experienced much success in the past two decades, and Abbott Elementary has been a breakout show for ABC. So,...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for St Denis Medical season 1, episode 1, "Welcome to St. Denis"
While St Denis Medicals pilot doesnt deconstruct the entire medical drama genre, the episode does play with one major trope of medical shows. There are a lot of medical dramas on the airwaves right now. After cop shows, medical dramas are among the most popular genres on television thanks to the likes of The Good Doctor, Chicago Med, Greys Anatomy, Brilliant Minds, and many, many more. However, the workplace mockumentary sitcom St. Denis Medical is a more playful, comedic entry into this oversaturated genre. Like Scrubs before it, St. Denis Medical aims to make the high-stakes world of medicine funny.

Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin are officially the masters of workplace sitcoms. Following the success of American Auto and Superstore, the creative duo chose the hospital as their next setting for chaotic workplace shenanigans with St. Denis Medical, and guess what? It's proving to be a working formula, as new ratings reveal. Anticipation was high when NBC ordered the series with The Goldberg alum Wendi McLendon-Covey cast to lead the team of medical workers at the titular hospital, and it's satisfying to see it living up to expectations. Move over Scrubs, there's a new medical sitcom in town.

They say laughter is the best medicine, so it’s a good thing the NBC comedy machine is back up and running this week, ready to cure those Americans currently suffering from a general sense of unease. Set at an understaffed hospital in Oregon, “St. Denis Medical” is a mockumentary seemingly constructed from the well-preserved remains of some of TV’s best and brightest workplace comedies, from “Parks and Recreation” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” to “The Office” and “Abbott Elementary.”
Created by Justin Spitzer (“Superstore”) and Eric Ledgin (“American Auto”), the series — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Peacock — features a talented cast that includes Allison Tolman, Wendi McLendon-Covey, David Alan Grier, and Josh Lawson. By filtering its comedy through an issue affecting millions of Americans — the country’s broken healthcare system — “St. Denis Medical” is both topical and funny, making it the awards contender to watch this weekend.
