John Boyega owes his Star Wars career to Tom Cruise. The actor recently explained how the Mission: Impossible actor had a hand in getting filmmaker J.J. Abrams to cast him in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
During a spotlight panel at the recent Emerald City Comic Con 2025 hosted by Popverse, Boyega recalled how Cruise watching his 2011 movie Attack the Block, which served as his breakout role, ultimately led to playing Finn in The Force Awakens. "I’m thankful to Tom Cruise, who loved Attack the Block. He was editing Mission: Impossible at the time with J.J. Abrams," the actor explained. "Tom told J.J., ‘You’ve got to watch this kid in Attack the Block.’ J.J. watched it, and one thing led to another, and four or five years later, I was in the movie."

Star Wars: The Bad Batchcontinues the story of the Skywalker Saga in a post-Clone Wars galaxy as the Empire asserts its control over countless innocent worlds. For three seasons, the animated series followed Clone Force 99, a.k.a. "The Bad Batch," as they fought to maintain solidarity against the Empire. The series acts as an intriguing exploration of a post-war galaxy, including the many political, militaristic, and diplomatic ploys that Emperor Palpatine used to assert his domination over the galaxy. Thereby, The Bad Batch maintains the Star Wars franchise's tradition of using animation to plug the gaps between film installments.

Kathleen Kennedy has been at the helm of Lucasfilm for 13 years, leading the company through a period of significant growth and challenges, particularly with the Star Wars franchise. Recent rumors about Kathleen Kennedy leaving Lucasfilm have sparked confusion, but Daisy Ridley has set the record straight about the studio president’s involvement in her next Star Wars project.
Speaking at the SXSW premiere of her film We Bury the Dead, Ridley shared her thoughts, saying Kennedy remains a key part of the upcoming movie.
Reports about Kennedy’s future have been mixed. One source, Puck’s Matt Belloni, claimed she’d step down as Lucasfilm president by the end of 2025. However, Deadline later published Kennedy’s response, where she said, “I am not retiring. I will never retire from movies.” She also mentioned that talks about who might take over her role are underway, with more news expected in the...

Despite the many delays and production-related setbacks, the Rey Skywalker movie is still expected to be released, with Daisy Ridley set to return to Star Wars for the first time since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. In a recent podcast, Ridley discussed her excitement over returning to Star Wars but also shared that there's a whole new set of challenges that she needs to overcome when New Jedi Order finally begins filming.
Per Backstage, during her appearance on the In the Envelope: The Actor's Podcast, Ridley noted how long it has been since she last portrayed Rey in the Star Wars films, which prompted the actress to wonder if she could step back into the role as if no time had passed. "The first three films, we did fairly close together in the grand scheme of things," Ridley said. "So one of the things is: Do I remember how to be Rey?...

There's been one topic I've had sitting on the backburner to write about for some time. It was never pressing, so I kept kicking it down the road. However, in light of the "Will she, won't she retire" news from last week, Kathleen Kennedy discussed how when Star Wars projects go through perfectly normal processes in the film industry, people scrutinize it as "troubled."
Speaking to Deadline, Kennedy said:
It doesn’t matter if you’re doing Star Wars or anything else. What’s troubling and frustrating is that our development gets scrutinized, and I don’t know any other production company where their development gets scrutinized like that. It’s very hard for anything to happen within Star Wars without some aspect of it becoming public before you even want it to become public... not every single thing we put in development we going to make. That’s not unusual.

In the midst of last week's "Will she, won't she retire," Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy gave an update for Shawn Levy's standalone Star Wars movie. And it was an update that I think is a brilliant move on Lucasfilm's part.
Speaking with Deadline, she was asked about both Levy and Simon Kinberg's upcoming films. She confirmed that Kinberg's is going to be "the new saga that moves us into the future." However, she was more concrete about Levy's movie saying, "Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that’ll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out."
This caught my eye because what we know about the Rey Skywalker film from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. That one is about 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. If Kinberg's saga is also in this post-sequel trilogy time period, Levy's film could be pivotal in setting up these movies.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has given an update on upcoming Star Wars projects. She confirmed that several movies are in development but did not mention Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey film.
Kennedy confirmed that ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ movie is currently in production. After that, director Shawn Levy will begin working on his Star Wars film.
She also confirmed that writer and producer Simon Kinberg is working on a new Star Wars trilogy. He is currently writing the script, and fans can expect to see progress by June. Kennedy praised Kinberg’s past work with Lucasfilm and is excited about the new project. Kennedy explained that trilogy of movies as “the next iteration, the new saga that moves us into the future.”
We’re absolutely rolling fast and furiously. That has gone exceptionally well, and he’s literally going to script as we speak. We’ll see something probably around June.

Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy's untitled Star Wars movie took a hyperspace jump forward with the casting of Ryan Gosling in the lead role back in January, but plot details are still very much under wraps.
Now, scooper Mttsh has shared some new rumors relating to the mysterious project.
Apparently, the movie will "have a significantly smaller budget" than the previous Disney-era films, and is described as "a more contained" story. Gosling's unnamed lead is also said to be accompanied by a younger character who is a Jedi Padawan.
This had led to speculation that the movie could be set in an era when the Jedi were still active (likely before the events of A New Hope), but Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy has since confirmed that it will actually be a post-The Rise of Skywalker story.

Suchitra Mattai, producer of the Oscar-nominated live action short “Anuja,” says the film came out of wanting to highlight young South Asian women.
“It just felt important to tell this particular type of story and to make a platform for young female, Indian, South Asian actresses,” Mattai said during her remarks at the annual South Asians at the Oscars pre-party in Los Angeles Wednesday evening.
The event, held at Carondelet House, celebrated South Asian filmmakers who have received Oscars recognition this year and was attended by various South Asian filmmakers, actors and producers. Charithra Chandran, Manish Dayal and Lilly Singh were among those who attended the party.

Kathleen Kennedy, the longtime president of Lucasfilm, is expected to step down at the end of 2025.
She intends to retire after her current contract ends, according to a source with knowledge of her plans. A separate source close to Kennedy, however, dismissed the initial report by Puck as “pure speculation” and said nothing has been decided.
Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012 as co-chair alongside “Star Wars” creator George Lucas. Shortly after, Lucas exited his post as Disney acquired the company for $4 billion, and Kennedy was elevated to president.
She is credited with reviving the property by launching the sequel trilogy, beginning with 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” as well as the critically acclaimed 2016 spinoff “Rogue One.” Kennedy has also charted a future for the franchise on streaming with television series such as “The Mandalorian” and “Andor.”
However, her future with the company behind “Star Wars” has been a source of speculation over the years.

The 2025 landscape is experiencing a lot of shakeups in the film industry. After Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra ended its run at the beginning of the year, Disney had a major shakeup to its live-action films, and other major changes happened at other big studios and production companies, including Lucasfilm.
George Lucas founded the major TV and film production company in 1971, and it has been the home of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, among many others. Since 2012, Lucasfilm has become a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Studios. Per The Hollywood Reporter, longtime producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is expected to retire this year.

Kathleen Kennedy has ruled over the Star Wars empire for more than a decade, but it looks like she might finally be moving on from this Galaxy Far, Far Away.
As first reported by Puck (via SFFGazette.com), the Lucasfilm President has told associates that she intends to retire by the end of 2025. There's definitely something to this as the story has been picked up by the Hollywood trades (this story also carries more weight than the wishful thinking often shared by YouTubers).
If Kennedy does plan on stepping down, then she's unlikely to be missed by the majority of Star Wars fans.
She joined Lucasfilm as co-chair alongside Star Wars creator George Lucas in 2012 and later took over following his exit when Disney acquired the company for $4 billion.
Initially, Kennedy found great success in the role. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a box office hit that grossed $2 billion worldwide.

Lucasfilm has big plans for the Star Wars universe, with several new movies in development. In April 2023, three films were announced, each set in different eras of the saga. Dave Filoni, James Mangold, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct these films, expanding the franchise in exciting new directions.
Meanwhile, Jon Favreau is set to direct The Mandalorian & Grogu, scheduled for release in May 2026. With other projects from creators like Rian Johnson, also in the works, the future of Star Wars looks packed with adventure.
Considering how rarely we get updates on these projects, it’s hard to know exactly what stage of development they are in. New Jedi Order is experiencing delays and challenges as it continues to change writers. Meanwhile, several previously announced films remain uncertain, leaving us wondering if they are still in development at all.

Daisy Ridley's return to a galaxy far, far away has been delayed once again. A new filming start date for Star Wars: New Jedi Order has reportedly been revealed, roughly a month after Lucasfilm hired George Nolfi to script the movie.
According to trusted scooper Daniel Richtman, New Jedi Order, which remains the Rey Skywalker movie's working title (an official title has not yet been unveiled by Lucasfilm), will begin filming in 2026. Additionally, Richtman reports that Nolfi is making "some changes to the plot." When the movie was first announced, way back at Star Wars Celebration 2023, it was revealed to be taking place 15 years after the events of 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, following Ridley's Rey as she rebuilds the Jedi Order. With Nolfi rewriting the screenplay, it remains unclear if that will still be the main focus of the Star Wars movie.

The upcoming Rey Skywalker film focused on the New Jedi Order starring Daisy Ridley was bumped from the 2026 release date. When it happened, it was a move that I was okay with because I wanted the creators to take their time instead of rushing to meet some deadline. It is a sentiment that Daisy Ridley agrees with.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting her upcoming film Cleaner, Ridley was asked about her upcoming Star Wars film and they were valuing quality over quickness of release. She said:
People have talked about it a lot that the release date often affects films and how quickly things go into production. So the freedom to make sure that this script is the best way to tell this story is wonderful, and I don’t think any fans would want it to be rushed. The wait will be worth it. Since the ending of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, the ever-active fandom has patiently awaited an update on Daisy Ridley's character, Rey. Is Emperor Palpatine's granddaughter coming back? When will she return to the universe she took by storm?

Daisy Ridley may have grown up a huge Harry Potter fan, but she has no desire to take on a role in the forthcoming television series adaptation. And before you assume her rationale has anything to do with the controversies surrounding the franchise's creator, J.K. Rowling, think again. It's merely because she is such a big fan that she believes "the pressure" would be too intimidating to overcome.
In a quote the actress gave at a screening for her new film Cleaner, Ridley was quite direct about the reasons as to why she never even considered trying to be cast in the production:
"I haven't asked to be a part of it because, honestly, I am so… Those performances are so phenomenal that I feelit would be so terrifying to take on one of those roles. Just, I mean… a huge commitment of time, but really it's just, I just love the films.

Despite Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy being announced as the film's director, the film has undergone multiple writer changes, with The Bourne Ultimatum's George Nolfi recently signed on as the latest. While the film looked to be aiming for a December 2026 release date, it has since been delayed. Ridley spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the delays centered around her upcoming Star Wars film.
"People have talked about it a lot that the release date often affects films and how quickly things go into production. So the freedom to make sure that this script is the best way to tell this story is wonderful, and I...

Daisy Ridley is back in action mode with Martin Campbell’s Cleaner.
The English actor is coming off two years’ worth of acclaimed work in a number of different genres, including the biographical sports drama Young Woman and the Sea, the offbeat romantic dramedy Sometimes I Think About Dying and her self-generated neo-noir Magpie. But when the opportunity presented itself to work with the filmmaker behind two beloved James Bond films, Casino Royale and GoldenEye, Ridley knew it was time to return to the type of physical acting that made her a household name via the Star Wars sequel trilogy. (Campbell and Ridley hit it off so well that they’re already in development on another action-thriller called Dedication.)
Opening in theaters on Feb. 21, Ridley plays Joey Locke, a former soldier who’s now a high-rise window cleaner for a London building that’s home to a prominent energy company.

Since leaving the world of galactic warfare and space wizards behind, Daisy Ridley has built quite an impressive resume for herself. From portraying the lead role in Ophelia, a reimagination of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" to playing Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, in her biopic Young Woman and the Sea, Ridley has hopped across genres.
Her next movie, Cleaner, is an action flick that is being compared with the Die Hard series. She is playing Joey, a window cleaner who is also an ex-soldier. The official synopsis revealed that the movie will be set in a London skyscraper that gets hijacked by a group of criminal activists trying to expose an energy company's corruption at their annual gala. One extremist crosses the line and tries to murder everyone in the building, and it falls to Ridley's character - who will be suspended 50 floors up,...

With so much writing trouble going on behind the scenes of the planned Rey spin-off movie, Daisy Ridley may possibly want to consider other franchises. Actually, it turns out she has, expressing interest in taking on any of the top comic book companies out there.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Daisy Ridley said that while her foreseeable future may be in a galaxy far, far away, she is keeping her options open to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the opportunity ever arises. “Look, I’m open to loads of stuff. I work with this amazing second Ad called Matthew Sharp, and he texts me cause he’s doing Avengers, and he goes, ‘If they call.’ So I was like, ‘If they call, absolutely.” But it’s not just the MCU that Ridley seems to be considering but also the newly-rebranded Dcu. “I then of course love Batman, love The Penguin. Back in 2021 when Olivia Wilde was still attached to helm a Spider-Woman movie for Sony Pictures, Daisy Ridley was one of the names that popped up in connection with the lead role of Jessica Drew.
Ridley denied the rumors at the time, but did say that she'd be open to playing the hero, and it seems the Star Wars sequel trilogy star is still interested in joining a major superhero franchise.
Sony's Ssu may be on its last legs, but that still leaves any number of potential parts in Marvel Studios' MCU or Warner Bros./DC Studios' burgeoning Dcu.
While speaking to ComicBook.com about her new action flick, The Cleaner, Ridley admitted that she's "open to everything" when it comes to stepping into a comic book-based role.

While some of the other upcoming Star Wars movie projects have been up in the air or have little to no updates, the future film New Jedi Order, starring Daisy Ridley, has been consistent with keeping the word out about its early development. Daisy Ridley may have gotten her start acting in the early 2010s with small roles in various shorts and TV shows, but it wasn’t until 2015 that she stepped into the role that would change her life forever. Ridley led a new generation of Star Wars stories as Rey, first in The Force Awakens before also appearing in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. After the controversial reception to The Rise of Skywalker, most thought that we’d never see Rey again. However, in 2023, it was announced that she would return to lead a New Jedi Order movie from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. During a recent interview with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt to promote her upcoming movie, Cleaner, Ridley spoke about her involvement behind the camera as a potential producer in her upcoming Star Wars flick, as well as how things are different this time around:...

Derek Hoffman has been named as Lucasfilm’s new vice president of development, TheWrap has learned.

Hoffman replaces former longtime development exec Rayne Roberts, who left the company at the end of last year. Roberts co-developed “The Acolyte” with Leslye Headland, where she was credited as a producer. “The Acolyte” received heavy fan backlash and was not renewed for a second season.
According to Hoffman’s bio on Lucasfilm:

Since the movie was first announced at Star Wars Celebration in 2023, it's become increasingly difficult to keep track of the writers who have worked on Lucasfilm's widely touted movie revolving around Daisy Ridley's Rey.
Last month, the news broke that George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) has signed up to give director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order tale another rewrite.
The filmmaker, who penned Ocean's Twelve, The Bourne Ultimatum, and wrote and directed The Banker, was among those eyed to helm 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier but this will be his most high-profile project to date.
Talking to Film Stories, Nolfi confirmed his involvement with the upcoming Star Wars movie and detailed his approach to heading into a Galaxy Far, Far Away.
"The way I approach it is, you look at what’s come before you, you look at the broad ideas of what they want to do.

The long-gestating Star Wars movie that's set to bring back Daisy Ridley and focus on Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order has had more than a few snags in the past couple of years. First announced in 2023, the project initially had Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson attached to write it before they were replaced by Steven Knight. However, Knight dropped out in Oct. 2024, and now writer/director George Nolfi has been brought in to pen the screenplay, which could spell good news for Star Wars fans, as he seems to have a firm grasp on the mythology first created by George Lucas.

After the news that George Nolfi would be the new writer on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order film, it's only fitting that outlets want to get whatever details they can about the upcoming film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker. Film Stories did just that, asking the writer about how he approached the new position while speaking to him about his new movie Elevation.
Nolfi, who has written for the Jason Bourne films as well as the heist movie Ocean's 12, has a love for politics and studied that and philosophy in the past. It's part of what pulled him towards George Lucas' work, which, remember folks, is well documented to always be political. George Lucas has stated that these are "themes that run all the way through Star Wars," with America being the Empire for the original trilogy and him being against George Bush-era policies during the prequel trilogies.

Writer-director George Nolfi talks exclusively to us about his screenwriting work on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s upcoming Star Wars movie.
Asking a filmmaker about their forthcoming Marvel or Star Wars project is generally a fool’s errand. Not least because they’ve signed so many non-disclosure agreements that they essentially can’t say anything.
All the same, when we spoke to director George Nolfi last week about his latest film Elevation – due for release on Prime Video UK on the 8th February – we could hardly avoid the (metaphorical) elephant in the room. Only a couple of days earlier, Hollywood trade outlets had reported that Nolfi had been hired as the screenwriter on one of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars projects.
If you’re unfamiliar, this is the sequel announced about two years ago, designed to bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey, and with documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy making her narrative feature debut.

Daniel Richtman claims to have confirmed that the Scottish actor will indeed appear as the legendary Jedi Master, but we're still not sure exactly how the character will factor into the story.
Since Ahsoka is part of the "Mandoverse" and takes place long after Kenobi's death in A New Hope, we assume he'll either be a Force Ghost, or appear to Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) in the World Between Worlds as Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) did in season 1.
Next up, The Hot Mic's Jeff Sneider has heard that Natalie Portman actually...

We might not have had a new Star Wars movie since 2019, but there's been no shortage of movie news flying in from that galaxy far, far away in recent months. There's been talk of a new Simon Kinberg trilogy, confirmation that James Mangold's Dawn Of The Jedi will be set 25,000 years before The Phantom Menace, and even the curveball potential casting of Ryan Gosling in Shawn Levy's secretive Star Wars project. And now THR are reporting that Disney's New Jedi Order movie with Daisy Ridley has brought aboard Ocean's Twelve and The Bourne Ultimatum writer George Nolfi.
As you may recall, back in October we reported that director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's hotly anticipated movie — a film set 15 years after the events of The Rise Of Skywalker that is expected to centre around a now-Jedi Master Rey as she trains up a, well, new Jedi Order — had lost screenwriter Steven Knight.

It's been almost two years since Star Wars Celebration was held in London, England. At the event, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Logan director James Mangold revealed his plans to head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away for a story about the First Jedi.
While we know this untitled Star Wars movie - typically referred to as "Dawn of the Jedi" - will be set roughly 25,000 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, few updates have been shared since. That's likely because it's had to compete with A Complete Unknown for the filmmaker's attention.
Today, we have an update on Mangold's Star Wars plans (via SFFGazette.com). It's said that the current idea is for the movie to begin shooting in December. The script, written by Mangold and Andor's Beau Willimon, will be completed by the summer and it's then casting will begin.

Amid rumors that the project may have stalled (or possibly been shelved altogether), we now have confirmation that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Rey-focused Star Wars movie is officially moving forward with a new writer on board to pen the script.
THR reports that George Nolfi, known for his work on movies such as The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s 12, has been enlisted to write the movie, which is being referred to as "New Jedi Order" (whether this title will stick remains to be seen).
Nolfi is just the latest writer to take a crack at the script, as Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were initially hired to develop the story prior to Obaid-Chinoy signing on. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight took the next pass, but stepped away last year.

Daisy Ridley's upcoming Star Wars movie has found a new writer, one that might bring a bit of espionage to the franchise. At Star Wars Celebration 2022, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars movies. The one that seemed to gain the most traction was one set to feature Daisy Ridley returning as Rey and would pick up 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. The movie had acclaimed documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to make her feature film directorial debut. Yet, like many Star Wars productions, the film faced many delays and went through two sets of writers. The movie now seems back on track as a writer with a history of sequels and a knack for sci-fi will take a crack at the script.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that George Nolfi had been hired to pen the script for the new Star Wars movie centered on the character of Rey.

Despite what you might have heard on the internet, the Rey Skywalker movie is not dead. In fact, it just tapped George Nolfi to be its screenwriter.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the writer and director has been brought on to write the film, which will see the return of Daisy Ridley in the role of Rey Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still on as the director, making her jump from documentaries to narrative features.
I'm going to say this again for the people in the back: It's perfectly normal for movies in pre-production to sometimes go through different writers. At one point or another, Damon Lindelof, Justin Britt-Gibson, and Steven Knight were writers on the New Jedi Order. There could be a number of reasons for pre-production teams to move on from a project. The reason why these make headlines is because Star Wars is such a massive thing.
