The Season 23 premiere of American Idol was all about the return of Carrie Underwood. The Season 4 champ officially took her seat on the judges' panel next to Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, 20 years after she won the reality TV singing competition in 2005. The eight-time Grammy winner replaces Katy Perry, who left the series after seven seasons as a judge. This is the eighth cycle of American Idol on ABC following the show's original 15-season run on Fox from 2002 to 2016.
The two-hour premiere aired Sunday, March 9 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) and featured auditions from New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville. As the show's only constant since the series premiere in 2002, Ryan Seacrest returned as host.
"I feel like I'm going to audition, to be honest," Carrie said as her car pulled up to Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. "I just want to do a good job." She called her own experience on...

Buckle up, everyone! It's almost time for the American Idol season 23 premiere. It's always quite the journey, as well as a fun and stressful time, on the singing competition series. The new season debuts with a new judge, season 4 winner Carrie Underwood! To say she's ah-mazing is definitely an understatement.
It's true we're going to miss Katy Perry and her shenanigans, but I'm also excited to see Underwood go from contestant to judge after all these years of having a successful music career. And she knows how the Idol hopefuls are feeling, and so the artist has a different element she brings compared to the other judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. So when exactly can we start watching the new season?

Winning doesn't make or break a career on American Idol, as many non-winners have gone on to have huge success. Sometimes all it takes is that little boost on the biggest platform to reach the next ladder rung to stardom. Such is the case for American Idol Season 22 runner-up Will Moseley. After weeks of grueling competition, the Hazlehurst, Georgia, native reached the top, coming just shy of victory as he shared the stage with winner Abi Carter before host Ryan Seacrest announced the results. Country music artists have always dominated American Idol. A major base of the voting public has an affinity for the country music genre, and thus, helps propel those American Idol hopefuls to the top. This past season, country music fell short of the victory when Abi Carter was crowned the winner, drafting a tried and true country singer and a folk act that played into the genre. With the addition of Carrie Underwood to the judges' panel, two-thirds of the celebrity mentors come from the world of country music. This is a significant factor as it's American Idol's way to help ease the pain when a country music hopeful doesn't snatch the crown. By leaning into country music on the judges' panel, the lovers of the genre may feel their artists will have a better shot at winning in the end. Or, it's just a ploy to bring country...
