Emmy Season Isn’t Even in Full Swing, but ‘Hacks’ Has Already Emerged as Top Comedy Awards Contender
What a weekend. Just like “Anora,” which has fully jumped back into the Best Picture race, the television show “Hacks” also had an incredibly auspicious weekend, adding a PGA Award and DGA Award to join its Critics Choice Awards 2025 statue for Best Comedy Series.
Though other current reigning Emmy winners like “Shōgun,” “Baby Reindeer,” and “Ripley” were big winners as well, those shows have either ended or are far off from a new season, so their PGA and/or DGA Award wins have little effect on the upcoming Emmys race. But “Hacks” is expected to premiere its fourth season in the spring, most likely making it eligible for a possible back-to-back Outstanding Comedy Series win.
At the DGA Awards 2025, “Hacks” director and co-showrunner Lucia Aniello got emotional thanking the room full of peers for awarding her work directing the Season 3 finale “Bulletproof.” “I’m very proud to be a member of this union,...

The year’s top filmmakers were toasted at the DGA Awards on Saturday night, with Sean Baker taking home the night’s top prize.
At the ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton and once again hosted by Judd Apatow, the Directors Guild of America recognized the best across TV and film. Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown) were up for the night’s big prize in theatrical feature film, but it was Baker who landed the win.
He expressed surprise in his speech, thanking star Mikey Madison and his mother while also acknowledging, “She supported me along the way, all the way; unfortunately I’m not really making the movies she wants to make. I don’t think that she’s seen Anora, I don’t want her to see Anora.” Baker also noted he “made...

Anora helmer Sean Baker won the marquee Theatrical Feature Film prize at the 77th annual DGA Awards, which were handed out tonight at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Check out the winners list below.
Baker solidified his position as the front-runner for Best Director at the Academy Awards on March 2, besting fellow nominees Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown). Baker also is coming off last night’s Critics Choice Award best picture win for Anora.
RaMell Ross took the Michael Apted First-Time Theatrical Feature Film prize for Nickel Boys.
The DGA is a strong predictor of Oscar success historically, missing the eventual Best Director winner only eight times in its 76 years. Last year, the group handed its top trophy to Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, and he went on to snag the Academy Award a month later. The film also won Best Picture.

Shōgun, The Bear, and The Penguin led Tuesday’s 2025 Directors Guild of America Awards nominations in the TV, commercial, and documentary categories.
In drama, Shōgun took up three of the five spots for the episodes “Anjin,” “Crimson Sky, and “Ladies of the Willow World.” They face “Dreadnought” from The Diplomat and “Part 6” from True Detective: Night Country. DGA rules stipulate that anthology series, such as True Detective, must compete in either the drama or comedy categories, not limited as they are allowed to do at the Emmys.
The comedy lineup features triple episodes from The Bear: “Doors,” “Tomorrow,” and “Napkins,” the last of which was helmed by Ayo Edebiri. The other nominees are “Bulletproof” from Hacks and “No Lessons Learned” from Curb Your Enthusiasm.

“A hack is someone who does the same thing over and over. Deborah is the opposite.”
That’s a line from Episode 8 of the third season of “Hacks,” but it’s also very much the ethos that co-creators Jen Statsky, Paul W. Downs, and Lucia Aniello have brought to each season of the Max comedy; the show always leaves Vegas comedy legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her writer, the millennial trashfire Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), in a more interesting place than it found them. Equally, “Hacks” has evolved in its look and its scope.
The show became more visually ambitious in Season 3, with everything from massive drone shots to college rager montages; it also hones in on a level of detail that wordlessly intensifies the emotion of a given scene. Maintaining the tone and rhythm of the series while expanding what’s visually possible is the fun challenge for...

It’ll be a case of Succession-on-Succession violence at the 74th annual DGA Awards. The Directors Guild revealed its TV nominations Wednesday, and all five nominees for Dramatic Series are episodes of HBO’s juggernaut starring Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox.
On the Comedy Series side, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso is a triple nominee alongside HBO Max’s Hacks and HBO’s The White Lotus.
Today’s nominations for the DGA Awards, which will be handed out March 12, also cover documentaries and commercials. See the full list below. The guild’s film nominations will be revealed Thursday.

Call it now: “Succession” will win the DGA Award this year for drama. That’s because it’s the only nominee this year for drama: Five episodes of the series’ third season filled all five nominated slots for this year’s DGA Awards category for dramatic series.

Also announced on Wednesday were the nominees for this year’s directorial achievement in documentaries.

Photo: ‘We Broke Up’/Courtesy of Vertical Entertainment The Rom-Com genre has always been a widely accessible and popular subsect of movies, however, that popularity is not always directly correlated to the actual quality of production, itself. Romantic comedies thrive when they have likable, attractive stars with large enough names to get butts in seats based on cast, alone. Usually, you can expect some cheesy shmooze-fest with unoriginal ideas and what could be described as tactless romance. ‘We Broke Up’ is one of those releases that defies all of your expectations upon an initial watch, servicing almost none of the contrived rom-com stereotypes. William Jackson Harper won fans’ hearts (and earned a supporting actor Emmy nomination) as Chidi in “The Good Place.” But now that the NBC comedy has reached the afterlife, the actor is stepping into rom-com leading man status with “We Broke Up.”
Harper, who will next star in HBO Max’s romantic anthology series “Love Life” and has a role on Barry Jenkins’ Amazon limited series “The Underground Railroad,” plays Doug in the new indie relationship comedy from director Jeff Rosenberg. The pair previously collaborated on “The Good Place.”
In the film, Doug and his girlfriend Lori (Aya Cash) have been together for a decade, but when he spontaneously proposes and she vomits in response, the relationship comes to a screeching halt. , Jeff Rosenberg’s “We Broke Up” eventually gets around to some pressing questions about the all-or-nothing framework of monogamous relationships — questions that it’s mighty refreshing to see asked in such good faith — but after 70 minutes of contrived plotting and broad caricature, there isn’t much time left for the movie to provide any meaningful answers for itself.
The good news is that most everybody who gives this thing a shot will probably sit through the feather-light first two acts and stick around for the payoff at the end, as the “we” of Rosenberg’s film are played by two actors with a rare and proven talent for mining literary depth from characters that exist between Nissan commercials. That shared gift sparks a chemistry that makes us want Lori (“You’re the Worst” star Aya Cash) and Doug (“The Good Place” breakout William Jackson Harper) to get married from the very first shot,...

Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough set off on a whirlwind weekend romance in Monday, a romantic drama that IFC Films released in theaters and on-demand Friday.
It’s the fourth feature from director Argyris Papadimitropoulos, who also wrote and produced the film.
Here is the plot: When Mickey (Stan) is dragged away from his DJ set by a drunken friend and introduced to Chloe (Gough) one hot summer night in Athens, the attraction between the pair is immediately palpable. So palpable that before they know it they’re waking up naked on the beach Saturday morning. And so it goes that a one-night stand on Friday turns into a whirlwind weekend romance that leads to serious conversations when they face the harsh sunlight on Monday morning.
The pic was an official selection at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2020 Toronto Film Festival. Check out the trailer below.

Lori throwing up at his feet wasn’t quite the answer Doug expected when he popped the question at the start of “We Broke Up.” Then again, Doug calling it quits on the heels of that reaction wasn’t exactly what Lori imagined either. After all, the pair have been together for 10 good years. Luckily, audiences are in for more pleasant surprises.
In this charming outing — starring Aya Cash as Lori and William Jackson Harper as Doug — each is legitimately aggrieved by the swift turn of events in their relationship. They went from a cruise-controlled 60 to zero so quickly that the film will later revisit (in a cleverly edited montage) what precisely happened.
They are also utterly flummoxed about the rules of disengagement. Although one might hazard that atop that list would be the dictum, “Do not go with your freshly minted ex to a wedding.” But go they do...

Love’s defining moment meets the end of a decade-long relationship in “We Broke Up.” The film’s contrasting views on the subject of romance present a broad picture of what is, could be, and might have been. Jeff Rosenberg, who co-wrote “Broke’ with Laura Jacqmin, highlights the usual tropes while turning them on their collective heads with this creative take on the usual romantic comedies. As a director, Rosenberg relies on his experience with series such as “Veep” to keep timing just right.

"I actually like our life!" Vertical Entertainment has released the official trailer for We Broke Up, a cute new romantic comedy from filmmaker Jeff Rosenberg. In order to not disrupt the fun, the couple decides to pretend they're still together until the weekend is over. The film also co-stars Sarah Bolger, Tony Cavalero, Peri Gilpin, Kobi Libii, Azita Ghanizada, Zak Steiner, Larisa Oleynik, and Eduardo Franco. This looks cute, but it's not surprising they're going to have feelings for each other again by the end. Maybe not? Who knows. Check it out below. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jeff Rosenberg's We Broke Up, direct from Vertical's YouTube...

The Directors Guild of America is out with its DGA Awards nominations for TV series after a false start earlier this week. The shows whose helmers will be vying for the hardware are Game of Thrones, Watchmen, Succession, Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Veep.
See the full list of noms revealed today below.
The DGA had been slated to announce all of its TV nominations earlier this week, but instead it revealed only the TV Movie/Limited Series, Documentary, Variety/Talk/News/Sports and Commercials nominees on Monday. It blamed the delay on “a re-vote related to a newly implemented electronic entry submissions process.”
The guild had announced last week that Jill Soloway — a previous DGA Award winner for her work on Transparent — was left off the ballot because of an internal DGA error. “We regret to inform you that the following entry was inadvertently omitted from the Comedy Series ballot: #165a.

Of all the plaudits Linda Ronstadt expected to receive when she was bestowed with kudos at the Kennedy Center Honors, “Rollerskate Hooker” was probably not among them. Yet that was one of the captions in a Ronstadt photo montage when CBS broadcast an hour of highlights from the annual Washington, D.C. ceremony Monday night.
The modified image took the iconic album cover photo of Ronstadt standing in a hallway on a pair of rollerskates — from “Living in the USA,” a No. 1 LP in 1978 — and replaced the album title with the none-too-flattering moniker in question.
As of Tuesday morning, the image was still in the version of the show streaming on the CBS website, but that will quickly change. Now that it’s been brought to light, the errant cover image will be replaced in the master tape as well as the streaming version. The Kennedy Center Honors are produced...

Over the weekend, specifically on Saturday night, two big precursors went down. The Directors Guild of America Awards and the Annie Awards were held, help to solidify two Oscar categories. Yes, as you’ll see, there’s now no mystery left about what the Academy Awards will cite in the Best Director and Best Animated Feature races. Frankly, there hasn’t been for some time now, but the last pieces of the puzzle were put together on Saturday. Those two categories are coronations now, and rightly so, quality wise. With DGA being the final Guild, that also really does launch us firmly into Phase Two, where members of the Academy will be making their final decisions about who and what will receive Oscar gold. Below you’ll be able to see Annie and DGA results, which probably shouldn’t have surprised anyone. The former went for Coco across the board,...

Seemingly in the vein of Steve Coogan's 2008 comedy, "Hamlet 2," Jeff Rosenberg's feature directorial debut, "Oj: The Musical" is a mockumentary centered on Eugene, a writer attempting to stage a production of "Orenthal: The Musical" with the help of his friends. "Orenthal: The Musical" is a modern-day adaptation of the Shakespearean drama, "Othello" and takes place during the infamous double murder trial of ex-nfl star Orenthal James Simpson a.k.a. O.J. Simpson. As seen in this exclusive clip, in Eugene's modern-day version of "Othello," O.J. Simpson is to Othello as Nicole Brown Simpson is to Desdemona. Over the past year, "Oj: The Musical" has screened at the Woodstock Film Festival, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Cleveland International Film Festival and the Nashville Film Festival. Watch the full exclusive clip below. "Oj: The Musical" will be available for download on iTunes and VOD on June 17.
