The cast and crew of Matlock were spilling secrets when they reunited for PaleyFest at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on March 23. Lucky fans were treated to an early screening of Episode 16 ("The Johnson Case"), which won't air until April 3 on CBS — and the gobsmacked audience was warned to keep their lips "Mat-locked" about the latest twist.
After the screening, executive producer Eric Christian Olsen hosted a Q&a panel featuring Kathy Bates (Madeline "Matty" Matlock), Skye P. Marshall (Olympia Lawrence), Jason Ritter (Julian Markston), Leah Lewis (Sarah Yang), David Del Rio (Billy Martinez), creator Jennie Snyder Urman, and director Kat Coiro.
Following the juicy discussion not meant for ears beyond the theater walls, talk turned towards Season 2 and potential guest stars. For Bates, there is only one legend she hopes to see strut onto the screen: Dolly Parton as Matty's often-referenced but yet-to-be-seen pal, Cindy Shapiro. Not much is known about Cindy,...

If Gold Derby's Emmy odds are correct, then Kathy Bates is on the verge of making history.
The veteran star is currently favored to win Best Drama Actress for the reimagined Matlock. She would be 77 years old when the trophies are handed out Sept. 14, which would make her the oldest woman ever in the category by 15 years.
Glenn Close (Damages) has held the Emmy record since 2009, and before that 2008, when she won back-to-back Best Drama Actress trophies at ages 62 and 61. Prior to Close, the category's oldest winners were 60-year-old Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters in 2007), 58-year-old Barbara Stanwyck (The Big Valley in 1966), 57-year-old Barbara Bel Geddes (Dallas in 1980), 50-year-old Sada Thompson (Family in 1978), and 50-year-old Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder in 2015).
After winning the Critics Choice Award for Matlock, a shocked Bates thanked showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman "for creating such an amazing role for an old lady like me.

Jennie Snyder Urman’s version of the show Matlock is neither a remake nor a true reboot — it brings back none of the characters from the original show, and the character played by star Kathy Bates only chooses to go by the name of Matlock as a tribute to the original series. But both Urman and Bates are fans of the original show and its star, Andy Griffith, and Bates thinks Urman has done a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of Matlock in its new iteration. Oscar winner Kathy Bates, who is experiencing a late career resurgence thanks to a critically acclaimed turn on the CBS network drama Matlock, took the spin in the spotlight inside a Beverly Wilshire ballroom on Friday afternoon to accept yet another award in her storied career. This one is called Showperson of the Year and it was placed in her hands during the 62nd annual Icg Publicists Awards.
Following an enthusiastic standing ovation, Bates, 76, immediately borrowed a quote from Colin Farrell’s recent SAG Awards speech during which he said, “What we do is unquantifiable; it’s playtime.” While Bates was referring to the profession of acting, she might as well have been talking about publicists. Their jobs are often unquantifiable simply due to the fact that the profession is so wide-ranging, demanding and (as most would say) overwhelming and almost never done.

While Kathy Bates’ Matty seems to be pulling off the facade of the century in CBS’ “Matlock,” she raised some flags for jury consultant Shae, which actor Yael Grobglas said is “Matty’s worst nightmare.”
“Matty has won everybody over. Her cover story has been working, but when you find someone like Shae — this is what she does. She can tell when someone is lying,” Groblas told TheWrap. “She knows instinctively something is off from the first moment she met Matty, but she cannot put her finger on what and it’s been bothering her ever since … She knows she’s lying.”
As Shae sets her mind on getting to the bottom of what Matty is lying about, she launches her own investigation into the titular lawyer, with the help of Sarah (Leah Lewis), who also turned on Matty after she...

Jennie Snyder Urman spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the first half of Matlock's debut season, as well as what's in store for Matty Matlock (Kathy Bates) as the second half begins. according to Urman, one of the key sources of conflict for Matty going forward will be the character of Shae Banfield (Jane the Virgin's Yael Grobglas). [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Matlock Season 1 Episode 10, “Crash Helmets On.”] Kathy Bates‘ Madeline “Matty” Matlock is losing the plot in her Wellbrexa investigation. The February 6 episode of Matlock showed the lawyer make a major mistake that has the potential to destroy all the headway she’s made so far. Her loyalty to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), and being Olympia’s favorite, both broke up the “You Three” trio that is Matty, Sarah (Leah Lewis), and Billy (David Del Rio) and made an enemy out of Sarah. How does Matlock move on from this major complication? Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman has teased where things go from here. Matty and Sarah posed as grandmother and granddaughter in one of their two cases of the week in “Crash Helmets On.” Their investigation led them to an assisted living facility where they encountered a dementia patient whom Sarah was able to console in a moment of panic. Kathy Bates, the Oscar-winning actress of Misery, has been at her best in Matlock. Defying Hollywood ageism, Bates plays a 75-year-old lawyer who has returned back to the workplace. But all is not what it seems as the wily Matty Matlock, “like the old TV show,” has hidden her real identity as Madeline Kingston to infiltrate Jacobson Moore, the law firm that represented the pharmaceutical firm she blames for her daughter’s fatal opioid overdose.

For the “Matlock” actress, 2020 and beyond has been a veritable hot streak of impeccable timing, great luck, and classic Hollywood fairytale. Few TV actors experience such good fortune, especially these days — but Marshall’s breakout role on CBS’s buzzy legal drama didn’t happen overnight.
“I didn’t have the courage to ask for what I wanted to do with the rest of my adult life until I was 27,” Marshall told IndieWire, looking back on the decade since she moved from New York to California. “Everyone thought I was crazy. They were like, ‘Do you have an agent?’ ‘No.’ ‘Any formal training?’ ‘Not really.’ ‘You have friends in LA though, right?’ ‘No, I do not.’ It was a cocktail...

Spoiler Alert for Matlock episode 8, "No, No Monsters"Matlock episode 8 highlights a difference between Madeline and Olympia that defines the series. The relationship between them is one of the most compelling aspects of Jennie Snyder Urman’s unique procedural show, which has a fresh take on Andy Griffith’s classic courtroom drama. In Matlock episode 8, “No, No Monsters,” Madeline and Olympia team up again following the latter’s second split from her husband. As they navigate Julian's post-holiday party cheating confession, Olympia pulls Madeline off of Jacobson Moore’s next Wellbrexa action, citing she needs her to navigate the situation at Mulberry Prep covertly.

Matlock introduced a new fan-favorite character in Kathy Bates' hit mystery series, but you may have missed how Sarah's sweetheart can foil Madeline and Alfie's plans. Madeline Kingston has a brilliant plan for revenge in the quasi-reboot of Andy Griffith's hit mystery procedural show. Still, the other Matlock characters frequently get in the way as she builds relationships with her colleagues. The sole person Madeline can count on to move her secret plan for revenge forward is Alfie, Madeline's 12-year-old grandson, who is a budding technical genius and a source of emotional support for his grandmother.
Madeline's team-up with her 12-year-old grandson has been at the heart of Matlock's twists and turns. Aside from Matlock's game-changing twist in the series premiere, Jennie Snyder Urman's gender-flipped procedural has a series of more minor twists throughout the episodes. Madeline and Alfie are always on the cusp of uncovering something new...

CBS has been celebrating its massively popular 2024 reboot of the classic show Matlock. With a gender-swapped lead role, played by the formidable Kathy Bates, and a legendary series to pull from, it's a recipe for success (and has already been renewed for a second season). However, knowing the woman behind the magic, it's unsurprising the new Matlock is thriving. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman has a lengthy history of writing and producing for television, having worked on shows like Hope & Faith, Gilmore Girls, Charmed, and several others, but perhaps the golden egg of her career so far is the hit CW show Jane the Virgin, which aired from 2014 to 2019, and was loosely adapted from a Venezuelan soap opera from 2002.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “Matlock” Season 4, Episode 8.
As “Matlock” dives deeper into the revenge plot instigated by Kathy Bates’ Madeline Matlock, this week’s Christmas episode put a spotlight on junior associate, Billy, with a surprising heartbreak that “floored” star David Del Rio.
After Billy revealed to Sarah (Leah Lewis) that he was planning on proposing to his longterm girlfriend, Claudia — but was feeling pressure from his sisters to craft the perfect moment — he embraced spontaneity and decided to pop the question at Jacobson Moore’s holiday party. In a shocking turn of events, however, Claudia rejected his proposal, telling him they aren’t meant to be together.
“There are so many questions that I have — They’ve been together for eight years. What is it? Billy is this charismatic guy … why wouldn’t you want to have a guy like this in your life?” Del Rio told TheWrap.

Before Kathy Bates agreed to lead CBS’ “Matlock”, she had two requests for
creator Jennie Snyder Urman: “Don’t change a word” of the script and
“Don’t abandon me.”
“Many times when we work on projects, you get the job, and then you don’t
have a relationship with the creator or the producers. And I hate that,”
Bates said, adding that she had thought about going into “semi-retirement”
prior to reading the script. “I’ve always said I felt like a little capsule out in
space in my pod and the people behind the video screen, they’re in their
own bubble. And it makes me feel alone. It makes me feel like a child.”
With Urman’s assurances, Bates sealed the deal to star in the reimagining
of the 1980s Andy Griffith drama as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a lawyer in
her 70s who infiltrates a prestigious law firm to expose wrongdoing.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Matlock Season 1 Episode 6, “Sixteen Steps.”] Skye P. Marshall‘s Olympia is a champion of the marginalized in CBS‘ Matlock. Even when a case takes many years and several attempts to win justice for her clients, she’s always working towards that goal. Episode 6 of the already-renewed procedural’s first season was a major milestone for Marshall’s character both in the courtroom and out, as flashbacks revealed the case and personal circumstances that put so much stress on Olympia and Julian’s (Jason Ritter) marriage, she asked for a divorce. Things are much better between the couple in the present timeline, and in fact, they look primed for a possible reunion. But the mystery about who buried those opioid documents is still looming. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman previously said there’s no twist with Matty’s (Kathy Bates) suspects; either Julian Sr. (Beau Bridges), Julian Jr., or Olympia is guilty.

Matlock won viewers from the first episode and subsequent ones in Season 1 have continued to impress. CBS renewed it for Season 2 shortly after the show launched after a great reception. However, the positive reaction did not "marvel" Skye P. Marshall, who plays Olympia Lawrence. In an interview with TV Line, Marshall revealed that she was confident the show would be a hit because of how production for the pilot went. "I created it with some amazing artists and a phenomenal creative team, our producers and our writers and our directors. [Showrunner] Jennie Snyder Urman summoned some really powerful, radical artists, and when we hit the ground running from the moment we started with the pilot, it was love at first sight," Marshall said.

The Matlock gender-flipped sequel series on CBS has quickly become a hit for the network, which led to the show earning a Season 2 renewal after only airing two episodes. Not acting as a reboot and existing in the same universe as the original Matlock series, on top of a clever twist revealed at the end of the first episode, has enticed both critics and viewers and no one is happier than its star, Kathy Bates. The Oscar-winning actress was considering hanging up her acting cap before the role of Madeline Kingston/Madeline "Matty" Matlock came along because she thought her career was slowly coming to an end. But Matlock and now its renewal has made the actress grateful for this next act in her career.
During a chat with Newsweek, Bates got candid about her reaction to the renewal announcement, noting that the series saved her during a very uncertain time in her career.

Ah, the old Matlock who isn’t really Matlock trick. Who could have possibly seen that coming? After all, the series is called “Matlock.” There’s nothing like drawing in a crowd with a distinguished name only to reveal that no such name exists.
Fortunately, the new Matlock isn’t half bad if you can mentally finagle your way around and through a few plot twists here and there. Gone are the days of simplicity, with intriguing, week-by-week courtroom dramas.
But, despite the new look, vibe, and Kathy Bates, there are some legitimate questions worth asking. This is especially true of the entire premise of that show.

Complexity for the sake of complexity isn’t always as complex as it seems. Does that make sense? Or, maybe it’s not such a big deal after all. For those not in the know (spoiler alert!), “Madeline Matlock” is not really Matlock,...

“Jane the Virgin” aficionados were likely waiting for one of the beloved dramedy’s cast members to pop up on “Jane” creator Jennie Snyder Urman‘s new show, CBS’s “Matlock.” In Episode 3, they got their (our) wish.
Yael Grobglas, who played sharp Petra on “Jane,” swung by the offices of Jacobson & Moore as a special jury consultant with a great gift: She can tell when someone is lying. “The Meerkat” aka Shae is wonderful for sniffing out less-than-ideal jurors, but big trouble for Madeline Matlock (Kathy Bates) who, in case you haven’t heard, is secretly undercover at the law firm, hoping to find out which of three fancy lawyers hid documents a decade ago that would have brought the opioid crisis to an end sooner. That’s a season-long runner on top of the case-of-the-week mystery.
“[Yael] comes back multiple times [throughout the season],” Urman told IndieWire. “I think her next one...
