ABC made the shocking decision to cancel Home Economics last week after three seasons.
Series co-creator Michael Colton took to social media over the weekend to reflect on working on the show and the next steps.
"I spent a couple days off Twitter, so I'm just now catching up to the outpouring of love and support for our show," Colton wrote on X on Sunday.
"Making 42 episodes of Home Economics has been the best experience of my career, and that's due to our incredible cast, crew, and fans…"
"Though the show has run its course at ABC, I'm hopeful the Hayworths will pop up somewhere else, if only so I can continue to embarrass my real-life family. Love you all, and #LupeForever."
It's notoriously difficult to save a series after its cancellation because the cast options expire, complicating a renewal.

In the end, the numbers apparently just didn’t add up for Home Economics. ABC has cancelled the underrated sitcom after three seasons, TVLine has learned.
The Topher Grace-led ensemble comedy wrapped its abbreviated third season in January. At the time, EP Michael Colton expressed optimism about the series’ fate, telling TVLine, “We’re optimistic. We know the network is very happy with the show. And we have a very devoted fan base. We’re just waiting for the right people to weigh in. It’s a process. But we’re planning to come back. We have a lot more stories to tell.

ABC has canceled the comedy series “Home Economics” after three seasons, Variety has learned. In addition, the new series “High Potential” starring Kaitlin Olson is now slated to debut in fall 2024.
“Home Economics” aired its third season finale in January of this year, which will now serve as its series finale. The series was one of just two ABC shows that remained on the bubble, with the other being the spinoff “The Rookie: Feds.”
“Home Economics” was a solid performer for ABC but never quite a breakout. ABC picked up the show for a 13 episode third season but then declined to expand the order beyond that. Fans of the show were given a glimmer of hope over the summer when ABC reportedly extended the casts’ options, meaning they were still considering a fourth season, but it ultimately did not come to pass.

Lionsgate’s Pilgrim Media Group has signed an exclusive unscripted deal with Sean Perry’s production company 2500 Media, the company announced Thursday.
Under the agreement, 2500 Media, which focuses on unscripted series, documentaries and scripted projects, will immediately enter into Pilgrim Media Group’s development and production staff. The deal also covers a first look scripted component with Lionsgate Television.
“When I looked around at ways to super charge my new company 2500 Media and deliver high quality production at a reasonable cost, it was clear that locking arms with Lionsgate and Pilgrim was the best and fastest way to accomplish our goals,” Perry said in a statement. “When you see what Kevin Beggs, Sandra Stern and their team have accomplished across Lionsgate Television and my good friend Craig Piligian has built with Pilgrim, it was a no brainer to dive in fully with them.”

Home Economics season 4 has received a very optimistic update. The ABC sitcom follows the class disparity between three siblings, Tom (Topher Grace), Sarah (Caitlin McGee), and Connor (Jimmy Tatro), who are all in vastly different income brackets. The series premiered in 2021, with its most recent season running from September 2022 through January 2023.
Per TVLine, while season 4 has not been officially renewed, ABC Signature and Lionsgate have extended its options on the main Home Economics cast, which would otherwise have expired this week. Some possible optimism here for the future of ABC’s Home Economics. We’ve learned that cast options have been extended beyond the June 30 deadline, possibly indicating that renewal prospects are good for the comedy series that remains on the bubble. There has been no decision on a renewal yet, however, we hear.
ABC, Lionsgate and ABC Signature declined comment.
Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds are the two ABC series that remain in limbo. As we’ve previously reported, after three seasons, Home Economics has performed respectably, especially in the 18-49 demo, even ticking up in the ratings with Abbott Elementary as a lead-in, but it has not found an extra gear.
The comedy from Michael Colton and John Aboud, inspired by Colton’s real-life experiences, documents the uncomfortable yet heartwarming relationships of three siblings in very different situations: one in the ultra-rich, one in the middle class and one scraping by.

At the end of Home Economics‘ penultimate Season 3 episode earlier this month, Topher Grace’s Tom willingly gets pulled into a passionate kiss by Eddie Cibrian’s hunky contractor Santiago. The twist? While, yes, it was all just a dream, it was Tom’s dream.
The series’ subsequent season finale on Jan. 18 made no mention of the surprise smooch, but that has not stopped fans from wondering aloud whether Tom’s fantasy about his wife Marina’s (Karla Souza) ridiculously handsome colleague serves as confirmation that the eldest Hayworth sib is bisexual.

Home Economics wrapped its regrettably abbreviated 13-episode third season on Wednesday with an earthquake-themed finale, and ABC has given zero indication whether it plans to bring the supremely underrated sitcom back for Season 4. ABC has picked up more episodes of its rookie The Wonder Years revival and sophomore comedy Home Economics. Each received a nine-episode back order, bringing their pickups to full-season 22 episodes.
Home Economics was a midseason entry; its seven-episode first season premiered in April, and it was renewed in May. New broadcast shows that launch in midseason traditionally get a partial, 13-episode Season 2 renewal, which is followed by a back order if they do well. Because of Home Economics‘ short freshman season, impacted by the pandemic, ABC put extra marketing behind the comedy’s September 22 Season 2 return, treating it as a first-year show. The pickup comes five episodes into Home Economics‘ sophomore run.

Combine an A-plus cast with smart writing about a taboo subject — the financial disparity between adult siblings — and you get a sitcom worth its weight in comedy gold. In Season 1 of Home Economics, the Hayworths — struggling author Tom (Topher Grace), woke middle sister Sarah (Caitlin McGee) and baby bro Connor (Jimmy Tatro), the dim but rich venture capitalist — cracked us up while clashing over personal loans, pricey vacations and pay inequality. (Credit: ABC/Richard Cartwright) Executive producer Michael Colton based the show, and its surplus of heart, on his own kin. “This is a family comedy about a family who loves each other too much,” he says with a laugh. “They annoy one another intensely because they think they know best and just want to help.” The fun continues in Season 2 as Tom gets closer to publishing his Hayworth-inspired novel, therapist Sarah finds work at the private school attended by Connor’s daughter,...

Michael Colton, co-creator of the upcoming ABC comedy “Home Economics,” didn’t joke around on “Jeopardy!” this week.
Colton won Friday and will return Monday in an attempt to extend his winning streak to three shows. He squeaked into the weekend by rallying in “Final Jeopardy”.
In third place with “Early U.S. History” on tap, Colton’s wager was conservative, but the other two contestants also missed, and his economics wizardry put him on top with $8,402. The winning answer? The XYZ Affair.
Colton, whose ABC show will debut April 7, discussed his “Jeopardy!” fortunes Friday while promoting his day job in a Television Critics Association panel.
“Thank you for bringing this up,” a joking Colton said, according to USA Today. “I was a little annoyed that none of the people before you brought it up. We’ll do a separate breakout TCA session later just to talk about it.”

As one expansive, big-family ABC comedy door closes — adieu “Modern Family” — the window opens up to “Home Economics.” The new show, which on Friday got an official premiere date of April 7, centers on a trio of siblings, each in very different financial situations.
Tom (Topher Grace) is a middling novelist with dwindling readership, Sarah (Caitlin McGee) works with at-risk kids, and younger brother Connor (Jimmy Tatro) is set for life in a sprawling, emptier-than-usual mansion. They’re a tight-knit bunch, as are the various kids and spouses that make up the broader Hayworth family tree, including Sarah’s wife Denise (Sasheer Zamata). Another of the show’s hooks is that, aside from the interplay between the sibling’s families, Tom is working on a new novel based on them all.

ABC has ordered the single-camera comedy “Home Economics” to series.
The series will air on the broadcast network in Spring 2021. The show was originally developed as part of the 2020 pilot season. Following the production shutdown caused by the pandemic, ABC announced in June that it planned to film a number of its pilots — including “Home Economics” — later in the year.
The series is inspired by the life of co-creator Michael Colton. It examines the relationship between three adult siblings: one in the 1 percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on.
Along with Grace, the series stars Caitlin McGee, Jimmy Tatro, Karla Souza, and Sasheer Zamata. Shiloh Bearman, Jordyn Curet, Chloe Jo Rountree and JeCobi Swain also star.
“Home Economics” was written and executive produced by Colton and John Aboud. Grace executive produces in addition to starring, along with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company. Jason Wang of The Tannenbaum Company will co-executive produce.
