Updated with latest: ESPN senior NBA writer Zach Lowe is the latest to be let go from the sports network amid ongoing belt tightening at the Disney-owned outlet. The Athletic, which first reported the news, said the well-respected Lowe’s departure is “part of the network’s fiscal year planning that will wrap up at the conclusion of September. He is thought to be the last person who will be laid off in this round, according to the Athletic.
The 12-year ESPN vet was let go just days after the dean of NBA reporters, Adrian “Woj” Wojnarowski, made the stunning announcement that he was retiring after seven years at the network.
That leaves ESPN without two of its best basketball writers with the NBA season tipping off in less than a month and amid the company’s pricey 11-year rights extension with the NBA a few weeks ago. The new agreement,...

Walking around ESPN’s sprawling campus in Bristol, Connecticut, visitors will find the sports giant’s mission statement at almost every turn. On walls, in windows, in the cafeteria: “Serving sports fans. Anytime. Anywhere.”
It’s a humble slogan for the biggest brand in sports media, and arguably one of the biggest brands in all of sports, but ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro argues it is “more relevant today than it’s ever been.”
Sports – like the entertainment industry writ large – is undergoing a dramatic, generational transformation, with viewership fragmenting, cable TV declining, and streaming on the rise.
“If you drill down a bit, what we’re really saying [with the mission statement] is that we need to be everywhere,” Pitaro says, citing streaming, of course, but also TikTok, YouTube, and other platforms.

ESPN has parted ways with Robert Griffin III and NFL Countdown host Sam Ponder, Deadline has learned.
Sources tell us that the decision to cut both on-air personalities was based on a business decision to reduce costs and will be paid off for the rest of their contracts.
The Athletic, which first reported the news, said Griffin had two years left on his deal while Ponder was about to enter the last year of her three-year deal.
Griffin’s exit from ESPN comes as the sports network signed retired Philadelphia Eagles player Jason Kelce as host for Monday Night Countdown.
After news of his exit, Griffin shared a clip from the 1995 movie Friday where they say, “How the hell are you go get fired on your day off?

ESPN continues to make changes to its on-air talent roster, with the Disney-owned sports media giant cutting Robert Griffin III and Sam Ponder on Thursday.
Ponder worked on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, while Griffin (or “Rgiii” as he is sometimes known) previously worked as an analyst on Monday Night Countdown, the pregame show to ESPN’s Monday Night Football, as well as on some college football games. ESPN hired Jason Kelce to join Monday Night Countdown earlier this year.
According to a source, both Griffin and Ponder were informed about about the decision earlier today, and they will be owed what is due to them in their contracts, with Ponder believed to have about a year left on her deal, and Griffin about two years.

A new filing from Disney today indicates that profits from the company’s sports division have fallen 20% throughout the first nine months of 2023. Operating income for the brand’s sports arm dropped to $1.48 billion, and revenue fell to $13.2 billion, a decrease of 1.3%.
Disney has struggled with its sports programming as customers move away from traditional cable TV. The media giant has plans to offer an ESPN streaming service for those who have abandoned the brand’s cable channel.
This is the first time Disney has broken out numbers for ESPN and its sports division, which also includes Star-branded sports channels in India, eight domestic ESPN-branded channels, and ESPN on ABC.
According to the filing, the drop is primarily due to an operating loss at Star India sports. As a standalone business, ESPN’s operating income was $1.894 billion.

“I’ve been doing this a long time where, look, I don’t want to do that forever,” Scott Van Pelt said in June of his perch at SportsCenter. “At some point you just gotta step aside and let somebody else have it.”
Well, now we know what that next step might look like for Van Pelt.
The longtime ESPN anchor will become the new host of Monday Night Countdown, the network’s popular NFL pregame show. He replaces Suzy Kolber, who had hosted the program since 2015 but was let go last month in a wave of layoffs.
Pundits are speculating that the move puts Van Pelt in line to host the Super Bowl when and if the network and corporate cousin ABC land it.

News Nation anchor Dan Abrams says conservative commentators’ theories that ESPN is “going down” because of its left-leaning politics ignore some “expensive facts,” suggesting that the network fired 20 high-profile hosts after it overspent on things like Big 12 football games and celebrity sports analyst Pat McAfee.
The “Dan Abrams Live” host said Wednesday highlighted the analysis of Charlie Kirk and other right-leaning commentators who repeated the theory that ESPN’s “woke” politics somehow led to the firing of longtime lead NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy, Jalen Rose, Steve Young, Suzy Kolber, Max Kellerman, Keyshawn Johnson and others.
“So what is driving this at ESPN?,” Kirk said in a clip played by Abrams. “The answer is, ESPN has gone woke, and they’re not as boundary-pushing or as funny or as interesting … this is happening because ESPN has decided to go a political route.”

Pat McAfee recently struck a deal to bring his namesake sports commentary show to ESPN. The former NFL player has been receiving backlash after the sports network announced layoffs and many viewers are correlating that it has to do with McAfee.
McAfee, who is also an analyst on ESPN’s College GameDay, took to Twitter to clear things up and address the “mass exits.”
“I did a lot of reflecting about our show’s journey while I was getting murdered on the internet today (hell yeah).. all roads lead back to how honored I am to be the leader of such a talented group and how lucky I am to be a part of this team,” he tweeted.
He continued, “We’re very pumped to be joining ESPN and our goal is that ‘Mass exits’ are never a thing again.. we hope to help that.. obviously that’s a lofty goal but,...

Cable TV viewers might think ESPN stands for Every Single Person Nixed, considering how many hosts, analysts, and reporters have gotten the boot in the company’s latest round of layoffs. ESPN personalities Suzy Kolber, Ashley Brewer and Jordan Cornette were among those taking to social media Friday to reflect on being part of the Disney-backed channel’s layoffs announced earlier in the day.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that roughly 20 people were informed Friday that they were let go, with a source saying that the talent cuts were related to financial concerns specific to ESPN and did not stem from larger budget issues for Disney. ESPN veterans Jeff Van Gundy, Max Kellerman, Keyshawn Johnson and Jalen Rose were also among the cuts, according to a source.
Kolber had been with the network since the 1990s and was known for her NFL coverage and having served as an anchor on flagship news program SportsCenter.
“Today I join the many hard-working colleagues who have been laid off,” Kolber tweeted, sharing a photo of herself covering the most recent NFL draft in April.

This would be a great project for the director to take on, as he's also the director of films such as Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, and Girl Interrupted. The guy seems like he's talented enough to take on all kinds of different genres.
I enjoy a good sports movie, but I'm not really that familiar with sports in general, so I won't be starting a sports website anytime soon. I do know the basic details about Namath, but I don't know the details of his life. This is what THR had to say about him though:
Namath is one of the most revered figures in New York sports history, having spent most of his career with the New York Jets in the 1960s and 1970s...

Filmmaker James Mangold (The Wolverine) is currently in early talks to direct a biopic centering on the life of iconic NFL quarterback Joe Namath.
If the filmmaker signs on, he will reunite with his 3:10 to Yuma screenwriters Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, who are writing the script.
After playing college football at the University of Alabama, under legendary head coach Robert 'Bear' Bryant, Joe Namath spent a bulk of his NFL playing career with the New York Jets, leading his team to an improbable upset victory in Super Bowl III over the highly-favored Baltimore Colts. He helped celebrate that win by opening the New York City bar Bachelors III on the Upper East Side. The quarterback was well known for his partying and womanizing ways, which helped earn him the nickname Broadway Joe, along with his penchant for wearing fur coats on the sidelines, which was later banned.

Johnny Manziel, the spectacular Texas A&M quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, was drafted by the Cleveland Browns — but only after sliding to the No. 22 pick in the NFL Draft. Manziel, who quickly became a Texas folk hero nicknamed Johnny Football in his freshman year at Texas A&M in 2012, was regarded as the draft’s top quarterback prospect and considered one of the frontrunners for the Houston Texans No. 1 pick. But the Texans went with sure-thing defensive superstar Jadeveon Clowney of South Carolina instead, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, who needed a quarterback and had the No. 3 pick, opted for Blake Bortles of Central Florida.

Did you make it through Super Bowl Xlviii in its entirety, or did you take a long winter’s nap until Prince appeared on New Girl? What was expected to be a high-scoring game between the NFL’s two best teams was a full-on rout, with the Seattle Seahawks (and Macklemore!) emerging victorious. There may not have been much competition after the botched snap on the opening drive, but this kind of uneventful game allows for more time to think about commercials, celebrity appearances and social media weirdness.
Because at least one person will ask you if you watched the big game, and you always want to sound informed, check out the 10 non-sports related topics we can’t stop thinking about this morning.

Since the game was held in New York Jets territory, the legendary quarterback topped his embarrassing Suzy Kolber appearance with a “Thrift Shop”-esque fur coat.

Erin Andrews put the brakes on 50 Cent at the Daytona 500.
Andrews, on the scene working for Fox, was searching for Danica Patrick before the Daytona 500 got underway when she encountered 50 Cent. The rapper attempted to plant a kiss on Andrews, but she turned her head a few times to avoid it. She eventually allowed 50 Cent to kiss her on the cheek before continuing her search for Patrick.
Seemingly quite smitten, 50 Cent followed.
Not surprisingly, 50 Cent's failed attempt to kiss Andrews caught the attention of many watching the race coverage. For many, the moment evoked memories of Joe Namath's very public and very rejected bid to kiss Suzy Kolber of Espn in 2003.

If not for the glory of my Kindle, my "books to be read" pile would be stacked like a pyramid of Colon Blow beside my bed and smothering my poor fiancee and dog, instead of blipping in a smug number at the top of my indispensable electronic reader. (It's 141. And growing.) And I keep a little memo list on my phone every time a new book gets released that I am excited about. It's how I came to realize that the world might just end on October 18th, because there are four books coming out that day.
Anyway, since everyone is clearly already reading The Borrower, because I demanded it of you and because it's a lovely little book, I thought I would share six other books I'm awaiting with fevered anticipation. Because if you are a fantasy nerd like I, July is going to be your promised land.

I'm writing this column super early today so that I can spend my afternoon and early evening at a sports bar watching the World Cup final. The magic octopus has already called the game for Spain, but the fun is in watching how it turns out. It is a bit sad; the World Cup ending means that soccer and vuvuzelas will disappear from American consciousness (not, however, the vuvuzela app on my phone. I love that thing) for about another four years. And the rest of summer begins to look even bleaker, entertainment wise. Here's your Sunday night TV:
7:00 p.m.: "60 Minutes" on CBS.
"Cmt Special: Jimmy Buffet and Friends: Live from the Gulf Coast" on Cmt. 90 minute special presentation.
"Dateline NBC" on NBC.
"Sons of Tuscon" on Fox.
8:00 p.m.: "Big Brother" on CBS.
"Food Network Challenge: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Cakes" on Food Network.

Perhaps it's a good thing that so much time has passed since the announcement of Jake Gyllenhaal's planned Joe Namath biopic. Gave us all a few more years to forget about the Hall of Fame New York Jets quarterback's infamous 2003 sideline interview in which he drunkenly professed his desire to smooch freaked-out Espn reporter Suzy Kolber.
Oh, who are we kidding! No one's ever gonna forget that moment in sports journalism history. In that case, Gyllenhaal had better hurry up and shift his movie into production to help restore the name of Broadway Joe. The biopic was announced back in 2007, and the actor recently told MTV News that he's still fully committed to bringing the movie to the big screen.
"Yes, Joe Namath is something I've been involved in and developing and trying to make really, really right because you have to make it pretty badass if you're going to do it right,...

Word on the street is that James Mangold is in talks to direct a biopic about the legendary New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath. While there appears to be no script as of yet, the film would no doubt cover all the crucial milestones of Namath's life, from leading his team's heroic upset of the Colts in Super Bowl III to shilling for Hanes BeautyMist pantyhose to his stunning, drunken on-air flirtation with Espn sideline reporter Suzy Kolber in 2003. The high-profile project will make for one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood, for which every agent in Hollywood will have only one question for the filmmakers: "Who's playing Kolber?"...

James Mangold has quietly worked his way up the Hollywood A-list in recent years. He started out strong, with Cop Land and Girl, Interrupted, hit a couple of snags (Kate and Leopold, Identity, a great movie until the disastrous ending), and then picked up steam again with Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma, the latter of which may be the pinnacle of the man's career. It if is, he'll have nothing to be ashamed of. Mangold is back in theaters this summer, helming the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz action-comedy Knight and Day (which I've got a summer movie boner for), and the list of projects on his plate, which already includes a feature based on the documentary Murderball and a Dusty Springfield biopic, is growing.
You can add Namath to that growing plate, so says The Hollywood Cog. We haven't heard much about Namath in a couple of years...
