Virgin River, based on author Robyn Carr’s book series of the same name, follows nurse practitioner Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) who moves from Los Angeles to a remote Northern California town seeking a fresh start. As they are preparing for a wedding, Virgin River fans will also get a honeymoon. Ahead of the December 19 release of Season 6, which culminates with the long-awaited Jack & Mel nuptials, Netflix has renewed the popular romantic drama for a seventh season. Like Season 6 (as well as Seasons 1-3), it will consist of 10 episodes.
With the early renewal, Virgin River becomes Netflix’s longest-running current original scripted series as well as the longest-running English-language drama series in the streamer’s history. Its seven-season run to date matches that of comedy Grace and Frankie and comedy-drama Orange Is the New Black, which was designated as a comedy for its first couple of seasons before switching to drama consideration. Virgin River has now eclipsed such Netflix staples as House of Cards and The Crown, which ran for six seasons each, with only the Spanish teen drama Elite ahead of it in number of...

“Virgin River” will return for Season 7. Netflix has renewed the series for another season — and quite early, with the announcement landing two months ahead of the Season 6 premiere. Patrick Sean Smith will return as showrunner for the 10-episode seventh season, after joining the series with Season 5.
The renewal makes “Virgin River” one of Netflix’s longest-running original series, alongside titles like “Grace & Frankie” (seven seasons), “Orange Is the New Black” (seven seasons), “Elite” (eight seasons) and “Big Mouth” (ending with Season 8). But the renewal doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Based on Robyn Carr’s bestselling 21-book series, “Virgin River” is also a huge hit for the streamer, appearing in the Global Top 10 English TV list for 25 weeks since Netflix launched the Top 10 lists in 2021. Season 5, which was given a two-part release in 2023, reached the Top 10 in 77 countries.

Just in time for Christmas — the sixth season of Virgin River is set to premiere Dec. 19. And it’s not one of those half-season drops that Netflix has been doing a lot of lately — all 10 episodes of Season 6 will be available that day.
That is slightly ahead of schedule — Netflix at the start of February unveiled its 2024 original slate, and Virgin River, along with a slew of other fan favorites, like Stranger Things, Ginny & Georgia and Wednesday, were not on the list, pointing to a 2025 return.
However, nothing is set in stone — Virgin River is the second series originally eyed for 2025 that will be back sooner than anticipated. The other is The Lincoln Lawyer, whose third season was delivered early and will debute Oct. 17.
Meanwhile, a series that was on Netflix’s 2024 release list, Season 2 of breakout hit The Night Agent, is yet to get a premiere date.

Exclusive: As Deadline reported exclusively in February, the upcoming sixth season of Netflix’s Virgin River, which focuses on Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) nuptials, will also feature Mel’s late mother Sarah and biological father, Everett, in flashbacks. We can now reveal that Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr have been cast in the roles and offer first-look images of them as Sarah and Everett in Season 6.
The recurring characters are being introduced as Netflix is exploring an expansion of the Virgin River universe with a prequel following Sarah and Everett’s origin story.
Seen in flashbacks mostly set in or around 1972, Sarah (Rothe) is a witty, free spirit from the big city with an ardent passion for activism, and trying to avoid the conventional/traditional life of a young woman in the ’70s. Always up for an adventure,...

The 2019 rom-com Isn't It Romantic has a horror sequel in developemnt. The sequel, Isn't It Scary, would likely follow a character being trapped in a horror movie. The idea behind Isn't It Scary has already been used in the 2015 movie The Final Girls.
Isn't It Romantic is getting a horror-themed sequel. The 2019 movie starred Rebel Wilson as Natalie, an architect living in New York who finds herself trapped in a rom-com and forced to live out the tropes of the genre in her life. The star-studded cast of the movie also included Liam Hemsworth, Adam DeVine, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Betty Gilpin, and Bowen Yang. Isn't It Romantic reviews were mixed, with a 69% Rotten Tomatoes critic score being undercut by an audience score of 51% and a lukewarm box office total of $48.8 million against its $31 million budget.

Back in 2019, Rebel Wilson starred in a meta romantic comedy called Isn’t It Romantic, which was released by Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema in the United States and Canada and received a Netflix streaming release throughout the rest of the world. Now Deadline reports that Isn’t It Romantic is getting an unexpected sort of follow-up – one that will dive into horror territory! This follow-up is called Isn’t It Scary.
New Line Cinema has hired April Prosser, who earned her first writing credit with the Netflix romantic comedy Look Both Ways, to write the screenplay for Isn’t It Scary. Look Both Ways had the following synopsis: On the eve of her college graduation, Natalie’s life diverges into parallel realities: one in which she becomes pregnant and remains in her hometown to raise her child and another in which she moves to LA to pursue her dream career.

Exclusive: New Line Cinema is in early development on Isn’t It Scary, a follow-up to its rom-com Isn’t It Romantic starring Rebel Wilson, multiple sources tell Deadline.
April Prosser (Look Both Ways) has been tapped to pen the script. We’re told Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside frequent collaborators Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo of Little Engine Entertainment, though these deals haven’t yet closed, as it’s early days here. No other talent attachments have been formalized at this time.
Playfully subverting and satirizing the conventions of the rom-com genre, Isn’t It Romantic grossed over $48 million worldwide upon its release via Warner Bros in 2019. Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, the film centers on Natalie (Wilson), an Australian architect living in New York City who is cynical about love and romance.
The story takes a fantastical turn when Natalie, after a bump on the head,...

Contrary to what you may have heard, being a TV writer isn’t solely about the interminable daily ritual of placing, receiving and consuming each afternoon’s rigorously debated lunch order. No—there are also fantasy football teams to be managed and Nerf basketballs to be bounced from one end of the workspace to the other. That, plus the tricky business of using one’s imagination to dream up the characters, storylines and dialogue that so many millions of people around the world build their lives around, e.g. a highly demanding creative act that often requires just as much strategic distraction as it does pure artistic inspiration. And all this is even before we even get to strikes, AI and a post-Peak TV landscape where the number of shows are actually contracting for the first time this century.
So yeah—it’s a hard industry to build a career in.

[This story contains major spoilers from season five, parts one and two, of Virgin River.]
Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith wanted the newly released holiday episodes of the Netflix series to feel lighter, given the weight of season five.
Following the part one release of 10 intense and emotional episodes (on Sept. 7) — which saw a wildfire hit Virgin River, an illegal drug business showdown, a sexual assault court trial and a difficult miscarriage — Smith knew he wanted the two holiday episodes that are now streaming to have a “feeling of family and warmth.”
Still, the beloved small town couldn’t escape at least some drama this holiday season, including Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) tracking down her biological father, who also lives in Virgin River. And of course, there’s no Virgin River seasonal event — this time, the Christmas tree decorating contest — without some challenges.
But as Smith looks ahead to the already renewed next season, he admits that his “intention was never to have...

Written by Green, Borrowed Time follows a cop who wakes up in the body of a stranger with no memory of who she is. The search for her identity is complicated by a chilling fact: Someone is trying to kill the person whose life she is inhabiting. She prevents the murder, only to awaken in a different body with a new mystery to solve.

In a competitive situation, Fox has landed drama The Twelve, based on the Belgian series De Twaalf, with a put pilot commitment. The project hails from writer Amanda Green, Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman’s Brownstone Prods. and Warner Bros. TV where Green and Brownstone are under overall deals.
Written by Green, The Twelve is a character-driven legal drama that examines one high-stakes case each season through the unique perspectives and prejudices of the twelve jurors. As the courtroom narrative unfolds, the jurors’ secrets come to light and their lives unravel, ensnaring the twelve in messy personal and professional consequences. Through their differing interpretations of fact, it becomes clear that justice is never truly blind. The Twelve asks the complex and provocative question: who are we to judge?
Green executive produces alongside Banks and Handelman of Brownstone. Dannah Shinder is co-executive producing. Wbtv co-produces with Fox Entertainment.

Stars: Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine, Priyanka Chopra, Betty Gilpin, Brandon Scott Jones, Jennifer Saunders | Written by Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox, Katie Silberman | Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson
Isn’t it Romantic, directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (The Final Girls), is produced by and also stars Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson; with Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine and Priyanka Chopra in a gloriously subverted romantic comedy. One that revels in the absurdly ridiculous conventions of the genre it derives from, with a razor-sharp screenplay that is full of life and energising wit.
The screenplay by Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox and Katie Silberman is the strongest and standout aspect of this fabulously meta-production. Think along the same lines of what Tim Miller’s Deadpool achieves (or Strauss-Schulson’s The Final Girls for that matter) in its satirical approach but replace the generic convention commentary from superhero genre to the romantic comedy sub-genre and...

“Alita: Battle Angel” is holding a slim lead ahead of “Lego Movie 2’s” second frame with an estimated four-day take of $29.1 million from 3,790 North American locations.
“Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,” meanwhile, is heading for about $25 million for a domestic tally of around $66 million. The two films lead the pack for a relatively sluggish President’s Day weekend, with the top 12 films totaling significantly below last year’s revenues, which were given a massive boost from the $242 million (four-day) premiere of “Black Panther.”
Robert Rodriguez’s cyberpunk action film starring Christoph Waltz and Rosa Salazar scored $7.53 million on Friday. James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis adapted the script from Yukito Kishiro’s manga series “Gunnm,” and the Fox sci-fier holds a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Alita” marks a risk for the studio, with a costly $170 million production budget.

About two weeks after Netflix released its hit summer romantic comedy “Set It Up,” screenwriter Dana Fox got a call to dust off an old rom-com screenplay — because the genre was back, baby!
After successes like “The Wedding Date,” “What Happens in Vegas” and “How to Be Single,” Fox went through years of struggle to get a rom-com made in the era of superhero blockbusters. But between Netflix and the surge of love for “Crazy Rich Asians,” the often-mocked genre is cool again — and Fox’s latest script, “Isn’t It Romantic,” hopes to ride the wave.
“I had been beaten up by studios so many times when I was trying to get movies made. I was told ‘we’re not making romantic comedies right now. It’s just not happening,'” Fox told TheWrap.
The meta Rebel Wilson comedy, which both embraces and mocks rom-com tropes, will try to...
