Resurrection is one of the most common elements in modern pop culture. Many fantasy projects use it as a prominent plot device. But George R.R. Martin believes that there should be a perfect approach to bringing back characters from the dead. The author believes that A Song of Ice and Fire executes the element of resurrection better than other fantasy works.

Some notable characters in A Song of Ice and Fire have cheated death. Martin believes that whenever a character is resurrected, it must be a transformative experience. The character’s survival should cost something. He argued that while his novel series smoothly follows this, another prominent fantasy media The Lord of the Rings failed to do it with Gandalf’s resurrection.

As anniversary screenings brought Coraline back to theaters, the dark fantasy stop-motion animated feature achieved a new record with its global box office takings. The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick helmed the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 2002 novella, which tells the story of a young girl who discovers a doorway to a fantastical parallel reality. Despite being charmed by the idealistic world, Coraline (Dakota Fanning) soon learns that something sinister has lured her into this realm, and that she is in grave danger.
Collider reports that Coraline was able to hit an impressive milestone with its international box office takings. While it had already become one of the top ten most successful stop-motion features at the United States box office, Coraline managed to raise its international earnings to surpass $50 million, making it one of the highest-performing stop-motion movies released internationally. Altogether, as of its 2024 rerelease, Coraline has a total gross of $228 million,...

Geroge R.R. Martin has been very forthcoming with the places that he drew inspiration from. The author has often talked about how his writing has taken a page from comics, and it turns out that he owes a lot to how Stan Lee was writing his characters over at Marvel Comics.

The author revealed that he owed a lot to Marvel Comics, given that the company was producing a lot more dynamic stories when it came to superheroes. While DC was producing a team of heroes that got along with minimal conflict, Marvel was busy showing superheroes in a more realistic light, which can be seen echoed in Martin’s work, even in A Song of Ice and Fire.

Coraline teaches viewers to look beyond the surface to uncover true fears, making it an ideal introduction to horror movies. The movie uses stunning stop-motion animation to create contrasting worlds that enhance the eerie atmosphere. Coraline's active and observant protagonist empowers young viewers to face fears and solve problems, shaping them into active horror movie watchers.
Coraline made a strong impression on me when I first saw it. I would've been 11, the same age as the protagonist, flipping channels one weekend before the rest of my family was awake (as I often did) and encountering it already underway. I can't remember exactly where I jumped in, except I know I saw Coraline's first journey through the little door. The tunnel unfurled for her, wonderfully aglow, and I was as hooked as she was.

Ever since Coraline was released in 2009, fans have been hoping for a follow-up. However, director Henry Selick, who adapted Neil Gaiman's children's book of the same name into a stop-motion animated film, recently revealed that he is currently not working on a sequel.
"It's something I love and have danced around," Selick told GamesRadar+ when asked about the "almost sequel" to Coraline called The Ocean at the End of the Lane, that was announced in June this year. "It's almost come together a few times. I would hope that it might still come together, but I have no predictions," the filmmaker added.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the first season of “Up Here,” now streaming on Hulu.
The first time Mae Whitman sang in front of an audience on camera, it was just her, a guitar and her “Parenthood” family cheering her on from the front row. On the NBC drama, Whitman’s reckless young character Amber finally grew up by channeling her angst through music. For character and performer alike, it required overcoming the terror of standing in front of people and bearing a piece of her soul as she sang.
Back then, it helped having her costars staring back at her.
“It really felt like I was doing a performance in front of my family,” Whitman tells Variety. “I remember getting up on stage for the scene and seeing the whole cast sitting right up front taking pictures and crying. It was a really special way to have...

Hulu’s Up Here takes as one of its central themes the question of whether it’s possible to ever truly and totally know someone, even from within the depths of true love. It’s woven right there into the theme song: A declarative “I can never know you” is chased by the more wistful “Can I ever know you?”
But for two lovers to struggle to open up to each other is one thing. For an audience to have trouble connecting is another. Up Here has its charms, first and foremost a pair of winning lead performances by Carlos Valdes and Mae Whitman. But there’s a disappointing shallowness to the entire affair, even after all the time spent delving into the characters’ innermost psyches.
As a musical romantic comedy, Up Here‘s pedigree sounds unbeatable on paper. Its writing team is led by co-creators Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (New Girl,...

Up Here is one of the most sincere musical television series to come along in a while.
It's based on the 2015 musical "Up Here" by husband-and-wife team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
We're all nostalgic for the 1990s now, so here's a throwback to the rom-coms of the era. It's in no way trying to reinvent the genre -- let's call it an homage.
Even the general conceit that the main characters have imaginary people living in their heads that they converse with regularly is not so unique. It's not far off from Herman's Head, Inside Out, or the "Dream Ghosts" sequence from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
There are some Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist vibes going on, too.
The original musical came out in 2015 and was described as Annie Hall meets Cirque Du Soleil.
Lopez and Anderson-Lopez are responsible for the songs here, and they are overall lovely, fun, and funny. Robert Lopez is an Egot winner,...
