"The Impossible" is a 2012 disaster film based on the true story of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The movie follows the Bennett family's fight to reunite after being separated by the disaster while showcasing other survivors searching for their loved ones, including a character named Karl. Karl, played by Sönke Möhring, helps Henry Bennett find his family, and their friendship develops as they search for their loved ones, but the movie never reveals what happened to Karl's wife and daughter.
The Impossible tells the true story of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami on December 26, 2004, and Karl Schweber, played by Sönke Möhring, is one of the characters depicted trying to find his family after the disaster separated them in the film. The 2012 movie primarily revolved around the Bennett family, who were based on Enrique Álvarez, María Belón, and their children Lucas, Simón, and Tomás, and their fight to reunite following the earthquake and tsunami.

Easily one of the best movies of its kind, J.A. Bayona’s minute-by-minute tale of survival poses an immediate challenge to audiences: could I survive that? The genuinely terrifying true story of one family lost in the middle of a devastating disaster is even more relevant now, with similar disasters seemingly happening daily. The near-flawless direction concentrates on the direct experience of a mother and son, who in just a couple of days learn the meaning of human concern and kindness. It’s a Spanish production (in English); Naomi Watts received an Oscar nomination and Ewan McGregor and young Tom Holland give strong performances. We reach back ten years for this review.

In an astonishing move to swell the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership ranks, a record 928 artists and executives from 59 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to become Academy members, but the Board of Governors makes the final call; this year, they did not invite Kobe Bryant although he won an Oscar for animated short “Dear Basketball.”
Clearly, people of color (38 percent) and women (49 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members also come from overseas.
In 2017, the Academy invited 744 new members.
Seventeen Oscar winners are among the new invited members (Melissa Etheridge) and 92 Oscar nominees. Nine of the 17 branches invited more women than men. The percentage of women in the Academy has risen from...

The line between humans and robots has been walked by, among others, "Blade Runner" and "A.I." as well as this year’s releases "Chappie" and "Ex Machina." The list gets even longer when we add films that tackle the "can a human be a computer?" question, like the excellent "Her" and the less excellent "Transcendence."
Add to this genre "Eva," which takes place in an alternate reality where humans and robots live side by side. This alternate reality is also 2014, but the movie was made in 2011. This being 2015, the film has become the past’s look at an alt-future that is also, now, the past. The film, from Spain, has been picked up by The Weinstein Company to run in selected theaters starting March 13. It stars Daniel Bruhl and Marta Etura and is directed by Kike Maillo. Check out the trailer below:

Director: Jaume Balaguero. Review: Adam Wing. I’m not sure what it says about the viewer’s state of mind when they find themselves caring more about the welfare of the psychopath than they do the hapless victim. That could well be the case however if you choose to spend a night in the company of Luis Tosar’s twisted janitor, keeping the residents anything but quiet in Jaume Balaguero’s latest psychological horror. Tosar was outstanding in 2009’s Cell 211 and he repeats the feat here with a sympathetic, oddly engaging performance that demands your full attention. That’s not to say the victim is any less engaging, but Marta Etura’s Clara plays second fiddle to Tosar’s convoluted conductor. She’s a cheery presence, all sweetness and smiles, and her inner beauty is matched only by her stunning looks. Jaume Balaguero (Rec) leaves the world of shaky cam...

Jaume Balagueró directed [Rec], a highly effective horror film largely confined to a block of gloomy Barcelona flats plagued by carnivorous zombies. His new movie, Sleep Tight, is a psychological thriller set in a slightly superior but shabby art nouveau apartment house, also in Barcelona, which is at the mercy of an embittered concierge, César Marcos (Luis Tosar), a sad psychopath on the brink of middle age. César has it in for the world and especially the tenants he's supposed to be helping, and the picture is a frightening study of unmotivated malevolence. The person who most trusts him is the attractive, cheerful Clara (Marta Etura), and she becomes his principal victim in a campaign even nastier than the one Iago launches against Othello or the one used to destroy the innocent Gérard Depardieu in Jean de Florette. An unrelievedly nightmarish film.

Gangs Of Wasseypur Part 2 (18)
(Anurag Kashyap, 2012, Ind) Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Zeishan Quadri, Aditya Kumar, Huma Qureshi. 160 mins
It's over five hours long in all, but there's barely a slack moment in this exhilarating Indian epic as it races through generations of smalltown criminal, industrial and political enmity. Yes, it's violent, but like all great crime stories it's also a vibrant tapestry of family life and modern history, closer to Leone, Coppola or Tarantino than Bollywood.
Stoker (18)
(Park Chan-wook, 2013, Us/UK) Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode. 99 mins
The Oldboy director gives us a sensual, tantalisingly ambiguous thriller, centred on Wasikowska and her shifty smalltown family.
Arbitrage (15)
(Nicholas Jarecki, 2012, Us) Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Brit Marling.

After scaring the living daylights out of us with Rec and its sequel, Spanish director Jaume Balaguero returns with a thriller that’s horrifying in wholly unexpected ways.
Apartment concierge Cesar (Luis Tosar) is such a misanthrope he makes As Good As It Gets’ Melvin Udall look like Mickey Mouse. Despite the friendliness of the building’s tenants, Cesar’s M.O. is to make their lives a misery – after all, as far as he’s concerned, happiness is an emotion he was born never to experience, so why should anyone else be content? His campaign of hate becomes all the more monstrous as the beautiful Clara (Marta Etura) proves unfailingly chirpy – for a while…
There’s much to recommend about Sleep Tight, from Tosar’s intense, heavy-browed performance to the claustrophobic panic of Cesar’s increasingly outlandish machinations. There’s a hint of Norman Bates to Cesar in the...

★★★★☆ From the man who co-directed the first two entries in the [Rec] horror franchise, Spanish filmmaker Jaume Balagueró now tries his hand at something a little less frightening - yet equally as disturbing - as we enter the deranged world of César (Luis Tosar) in Sleep Tight (Mientras duermes, 2011). Working as an apartment block concierge, César takes full advantage of his position, sneaking into the flat of beautiful tenant Clara (Marta Etura) almost nightly - with the unsuspecting victim having absolutely no idea. We begin with the image of César contemplating suicide, professing his deep unhappiness in what is a fruitless livelihood.

Sleep Tight
Stars: Luis Tosar, Marta Etura, Alberto San Juan, Iris Ameida, Petra Martinez | Written by Alberto Marini | Directed by Jaume Balagueró
Director Jaume Balagueró flies solo with Sleep Tight, a film that – like his most famous effort – once again takes place in a apartment building, however this time his film has more in common with the classic cinema of Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski than the modern zombie horror of Balagueró’s [Rec].
Sleep Tight follows Cesar (Tosar), the quiet, helpful and polite concierge of an apartment block in Barcelona. However his polite exterior hides something much more… sinister. Relishing in tormenting Veronica, an old lady who lives all alone in her apartment surrounded by her pets and at odds with one of the buildings younger tenants, Cesar spends most of his days plotting against Clara, a happy-go-lucky young woman with whom he has an unhealthy obsession. An obsession that,...

Sleep Tight sees Spanish writer and director Jaume Balagueró step back into the stoplight without [Rec] co-director Paco Plaze with a markedly different kind of horror film – one set to a slower pace and removed of all-out carnage. The result is a masterclass in suspense that’s likely to send shudders down its baying audiences’ spines as screenwriter Alberto Marini touches on a nerve as he asks the unsettling, yet unspoken question of what happens when you’re asleep.
César (Luis Tosar) is the mild-mannered concierge of an upscale apartment building. He doesn’t have much contact with the residents, aside from those who set him mundane tasks and Clara (Marta Etura), the woman he’s somehow hellbent on making miserable. Each night, he slips into her apartment, drugs her and sets about terrorising her life as a form of unexplained revenge. His efforts are complicated, however, when Clara’s boyfriend returns,...

Suspenseful thrillers used to be engaging, thought-provoking and well, suspenseful. Films of this genre have been pretty lackluster as of late except for one such gem that’s slipped through the cracks. That film is the Spanish Sleep Tight, a twisted tale that manages to scare, shock and mesmerize all in the course of its 101 minutes.
Cesar (Luis Tosar) is the concierge of an apartment building in Barcelona. He is a truly disturbed individual who believes that he has the inability to be happy. He wants everyone around him to be miserable and does so in subtle and quiet ways. He is obsessed with one tenant Clara (Marta Etura) and since she is so happy-go-lucky, he is determined to make her as miserable as he by creeping into her life.

Director Jaume Balagueró has been making quality, dread filled horror films for some time now. Most known for co-directing both [Rec] and [Rec 2], Balagueró is an exceptionally well honed director. His films offer a focus on character and narrative development rather than conventional assisting elements like jump scares and overdone effects, a welcome trait to the horror genre.
In 1999, The Nameless introduced Balagueró’s talents to horror fans and he has continued to deliver. With Sleep Tight, a taut and inventive homage to Psycho and Peeping Tom in some regards, Balagueró solidifies himself as a genre force to be reckoned with.
It starts on a Monday with Cesar (Luis Tosar), a swanky apartment complex concierge in Barcelona. Cesar is suffering from depression, in a state of hopelessness severe enough that he contemplates suicide. However, the one thing keeping him somewhat stable, if you can call it that, is his adoringly depraved fascination...

Sleep Tight, scripted by Alberto Marini, stars Luis Tosar in a chilling performance as Cesar, the doorman of an apartment building where he has developed a fixation on pretty tenant Clara (Marta Etura). Obsessed with causing misfortune for others, Cesar subtly invades her space and gradually turns her life into a waking nightmare (see review here). It’s a return to familiar location territory for Balagueró, but a different, equally effective brand of horror than that showcased in his earlier hits.

If the tsunami of Dec 26, 2004, which killed nearly a quarter of a million people in 14 countries, has not touched your lives, then "The impossible' will definitely do that and much more. You are bound to be swept off by the emotional quotient of the killer waves.
Urgent yet measured, like the onrushing tide, "The Impossible" is a real-life disaster film with scenes that would churn your stomach.

The Impossible
Stars: Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin, Oaklee Pendergast, Marta Etura, Sönke Möhring | Written by Sergio G. Sánchez | Directed by J.A. Bayona
Director J.A. Bayona burst onto the scene to widespread acclaim back in 2007 with the Guillermo Del Toro backed The Orphanage, an impressive ghost story filled with the classical sense of dread Del Toro himself excels out while telling a deeply personal story. Instead of going on the horror movie merry-go-round which has taken so many promising directors over recent years, Bayona instead aimed for the stars, using a big budget and big names to tell a “true” story of the horrific Boxing Day Tsunami and one family’s struggle to find each other in its wake.
