A dinner party in Los Angeles takes a wild turn in “The Uninvited,” a new film written and directed by Nadia Conners. Making her first narrative feature, Conners exposes the messy realities of life among Hollywood’s elite.
The movie, which debuted at SXSW 2024, stars Walton Goggins and Elisabeth Reaser as a married couple whose glamorous evening spirals into disorder. Foton Distribution has set the release for May 9, with early screenings at New York’s IFC Center on April 11 and Los Angeles’ Laemmle on April 18.
The story centers on Sammy, an agent played by Goggins, and his wife Rose, portrayed by Reaser. They host a party to charm Sammy’s important client, Gerald, acted by Rufus Sewell. But their plans unravel when two unexpected guests arrive.
First, an elderly woman named Helen, played by Lois Smith, wanders in, insisting the house is hers. Then, Rose’s ex-lover Lucien, brought to life by Pedro Pascal,...

Hey, remember 2020 quarantine? That’s a joke — of course you do. Not only was it the most disruptive worldwide event of the last five years, it has also been exhaustively mined for content. Only three years out, it already feels like all the articles, books, social media posts, paintings, films, and TV shows that could be made about quarantine have already been made. Such is the nature of our rapid-fire online world. If you want to say something about the pandemic lockdown, it’d better be inventive. Like, a-Zoom-seance-killed-all-my-friends inventive.
Unfortunately, “Life Upside Down” makes no such contributions. This second feature from the writer-director Cecilia Miniucchi (“Expired”) uses the expected pandemic filmmaking gimmicks — actors filmed their scenes on phones and computers as Miniucchi directed them remotely — to produce a cringe-inducing melodrama. In this undercooked tale of middle-aged romance, there is nobody to root for and nothing of interest. All there...

Screen Rant is thrilled to present an exclusive clip from IFC Films' new romantic comedy, Life Upside Down. The movie is set in the early days of the global pandemic, when people were still trying to adjust to the reality of being at home 24/7 and how that impacted jobs, relationships, and identity. Life Upside Down follows three couples that are forced to find a way to navigate through their relationships in the world of 2020.
Forced to confront their family, friends, spouses, and eventually themselves, each person's life is turned upside down and forever changed from what it used to be. A number of movies and series across genres have taken inspiration from the pandemic, some out of necessity while filming and others leaning into the difficulties of the time for comedy or drama. Life Upside Down premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. Life Upside Down will debut in theaters and...

"It's been so long since we've been together." IFC Films has revealed a trailer for an indie film titled Life Upside Down, formerly known as Worlds Apart, written and directed by filmmaker Cecilia Miniucchi. This is yet another lockdown project, finally releasing after first premiering at the Venice Film Festival's sidebar Venice Days a few months ago. Three couples who know one another are stuck at home during the beginning of lockdown. Jonathan, Clarissa and Paul will soon see their lives turned upside-down, forced to look at each other and ultimately at themselves. Forced to honestly face their spouses, friends, lovers, as well as take a good look in the mirror. The indie film stars Bob Odenkirk, Radha Mitchell, Danny Huston, Rosie Fellner, Cyrus Pahlavi, Terence Bernie Hines, and Jeanie Lim. This looks pretty rough, like many of the pandemic-inspired "what happened to us in lockdown" films the last few years.

“Mara” opens with some dubious statistics fudged to imply that about one-third of the world’s population thinks they’ve been “attacked by a demonic entity.” That, unfortunately, sets the tone for a generically conceived horror thriller distinguished only by its belief that more hysteria equals a more frightening movie.
There’s certainly a lot of yelling and screaming here, but chills diminish rather than increase as a result. However, those experiencing vitamin deficiencies over underexposure to ham acting and jump scares may find relief from the film’s Sept. 7 release to VOD, Digital HD and a few theaters.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton offers a look at writer-director Derek Nguyen’s intriguing debut feature, a finely observed supernatural gothic chiller-cum-illicit period love story, set on a French plantation in Vietnam towards the end of the First Indochina War. It’s also a spooky melodrama with a difference. As such, this well-acted, handsomely staged and stylishly shot Vietnamese-South Korean co-production is able to offset its scenes of uncanny terror and interracial romance with scenarios that pass comment on both the mechanics of colonialism and the physical violence and psychological damage that necessarily accompany the colonial process.

"This has happened before... History is repeating itself." IFC Midnight has released an official trailer for a Vietnamese horror thriller titled The Housemaid, from director Derek Nguyen. Not to be confused with the Korean romantic thriller The Housemaid, this The Housemaid is about a ghost who haunts a mansion in Vietnam in the 1950s where a housemaid works. Kate Nhung stars as Linh, and she works at a crumbling rubber plantation run by a French officer. There's some eroticism, and similarities to the other Housemaid (which is a remake anyway) but this looks much scarier. The film's cast includes Jean-Michel Richaud, Rosie Fellner, Kim Xuan, and Svitlana Kovalenko. Aside from being a supernatural horror, this film also "confronts the dark shadows of Vietnam's colonial past." This trailer definitely is freaky, so watch out. *full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's United Kingdom distributor, Eureka Entertainment. Director/writer: Derek Nguyen. Cast: Kate Nhung, Jean-Michel Richaud, Kim Xuan, Rosie Fellner, Kien An and Svitlana Kovalenko. The Housemaid aka Cô Haû Gaí is another cross-cultural film. From director Derek Nguyen (Buster's Mal Heart), this film was shot in Vietnam. It hosts both English and Vietnamese languages as an orphan girl searches for her path. Very slowly paced, The Housemaid is not essentially a horror film as Linh (Kate Nhung) ingratiates herself on a French plantation. The Housemaid is a blend of genres. And, the use of so many genres here upsets the film's tone. It is from period piece, to drama, to romance and into the horror realm. The film bounces all over the place. Only foreign film fans or fans of Asian cinema will enjoy this outing. To get...

Evolutionary Films has completed primary shooting on the horror film Aux. Shot in the United Kingdom, the film stars John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Tanya Franks and Rosie Fellner. Taking place in an underground World War II bunker, the film involves two young boys and their dangerous discovery. Something malicious lives deep below the surface. Currently in post-production, a preview of Aux is hosted here. Major plot points are revealed in the film's synopsis. Two boys discover the bunker and their outcome is dire. Not much later, several police officers investigate the macabre scene, only to be targeted themselves. And, there is only one person who can turn things around, if only his strength will hold. A film poster has been released for the film. As well, two concept artworks show the film's central setting and characters. The graphics show what hides in the bunker and difficulties of escaping this fortification.

In this weekend’s specialty box-office debuts, IFC Films hopes to replicate the critical and commercial success of Michael Winterbottom’s first amusing little travelogue/talker of a feature, The Trip, with a semi-sequel, The Trip To Italy. The second Trip again stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon; the entertainingly garrulous pair on yet another jaunt across restaurants, countryside and philosophy. The latest Trip will bow in NYC and La this weekend after a successful Australian run earlier this summer (or their winter).
Frank, a British-Irish-American drama from Magnolia Pictures featuring Michael Fassbender that had runs at Sundance and SXSW, bows in only one U.S. theater this weekend. Frank centers on an eccentric band, giving Fassy fans a chance to hear the Oscar-nominated actor sing, albeit from behind a mask (he’s not bad, actually).
Other notable new films include Philippe Garrel‘s Jealousy, which Distrib Films will expand...

The Trip To Italy
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Writers: Rob Brydon, Steve Coogan, Michael Winterbottom
Producer: Melissa Parmenter
U.S. Distributor: IFC Films
Cast: Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Rosie Fellner
Michael Winterbottom has been producing films at a frenetic pace for over the past twenty years. The only year he hasn’t not had some sort of offering, whether it be directing an episode of a series in his earlier career, which began in 1989, was 2001. He’s consistently had not one, but sometimes two or three projects premiere in a year. This year, we get two offerings, the first being a followup to his successful 2010 comedy, The Trip, which looks to be the exact same set up as the first film, but in Italy rather than the UK. We look forward to more of Coogan’s bitchy faux alter ego and here’s to more rival Michael Caine impressions.

Actors Trapped In Elevator Fall
Stars including The Good Wife's Josh Charles, actor Alessandro Nivola and director David M. Rosenthal were left fearing for their lives at a movie party in New York as their hotel elevator plummeted from the 16th floor.
The group, which also included British actor Guy Burnet, actress Rosie Fellner and comedian Seth Herzog, was leaving the afterparty for new movie Janie Jones at the Gramercy Park Hotel in Manhattan on Thursday night.
They got into an elevator and headed down from the rooftop terrace, but when another couple got in on the 16th floor, the compartment dropped and plummeted eight floors before stopping.
Janie Jones director Rosenthal tells Nymag.com, "We've all had a couple of drinks... and we're just piling into the elevator... Everyone is yelling and hooting... (The couple) decide to jump in, and as soon as they jump in, the thing starts plummeting down. His girlfriend is lucky she didn't get killed because her foot was barely inside the door when the elevator dropped. I think we fell eight stories before the emergency brake went off. We initially thought we'd gone all the way to the basement and bounced on the springs."
Emergency services were called to the scene, but the frustrated group decided not to wait, and took action themselves, climbing out of a gap in the doors onto a floor.
Rosenthal adds, "(One guy) decided he just wanted out of there, so he dropped his glass, which broke on the floor, and climbed through the gap... He turned around and stuck out his hand and was like, 'Okay, who's next?'"
Gramercy manager Elizabeth Mao confirmed the incident in a statement, insisting the elevator will now undergo thorough testing: "There was an elevator malfunction... Our security team responded to the incident immediately... All guests were safely evacuated... We are ensuring the elevator car in question undergoes a thorough inspection..."...

Mem Ferda as DusanThe Crew is an action thriller, which was released in North America late in 2009, based on the novel "Outlaws" by author Kevin Sampson. The film reveals the seedy Liverpool underworld and the criminals who inhabit it. The Crew stars Stephen Graham ("London Boulevard"), Scot Williams (Dead Man Running), Mem Ferda (Legacy) and Rory McCann. Now that the film has been released and distributed, actor and villain Ferda is able to talk about his role as Dusan in this production. From Film File a German online magazine, Ferda states that becoming the antagonist in a thriller is actually very easy: "playing villains is fun. It can be a form of therapy for the innate evil that is within us all."
Empire magazine has described the film as "an intense thriller," and from Ferda he describes his character as "a guy with serious issues" (Film File). Criticized for its...

British actor Sean Bean has signed up to star opposite his wife in a new movie. The "Lord of the Rings" star will shoot a scene with his partner Georgina Sutcliffe, who he wed in 2008, for World War II adventure film "Age of Heroes" - it will mark the first time they have worked together.
Sutcliffe will play the actor's onscreen wife, and Bean admits he is delighted to be sharing the spotlight with his spouse. He tells Britain's Sunday Express newspaper, "I'm quite looking forward to it. I think we both are. I've never worked with her before so it should be interesting. We've got a scene in a car so we might pop into the car later and practice our lines."
Beside starring Sean Bean and Georgina Sutcliffe, "Age of Heroes" also features Danny Dyer and Rosie Fellner with Adrian Vitoria sitting on the directing seat.

Sean Bean and Danny Dyer will re-team on the WW2 action-drama "Age of Heroes" for Matador Pictures says The Hollywood Reporter.
Vitoria and Ed Scates' script will follow the true story of the formation of the 30 Assault Unit (aka. 30 Commando) in 1942, a special intelligence gathering unit first proposed by Ian Fleming who would later go on to pen the James Bond novel series.
The 30Au were teams who specialised in various skills from safe cracking to unarmed combat which they used to undertake covert infiltrations into enemy territory to capture intelligence. They served as a precursor to many of the elite forces now operating in the field.
Rosie Fellner also stars in this first of a proposed trilogy. Follow-ups entitled "Age Of Honour" and "Age Of Glory" are already in early planning should 'Heroes' go well.
Filming under the helm of Adrian Vitoria kicks off early next month in Norway.
