The Alliance, the new partnership formed by leading European pubcasters to counter the growing power of Netflix and other players, is revving up with two new international dramas, “Around the World in 80 Days” and “Mirage.”
The Alliance was formed last year by France Televisions, Germany’s Zdf and Italy’s Rai. The partners unveiled their two new ambitious shows Wednesday at Series Mania in Lille, France.
For France Televisions in particular, the series are part of a wider move into high-end international drama that also includes French series like “Germinal,” based on Emile Zola’s classic novel, and the adaptation of Guillaume Musso’s bestseller, “La jeune fille et la nuit,” both of which France Televisions is developing outside of the Alliance.
The French pubcaster’s push has been spearheaded by Nathalie Biancolli, an industry veteran who helped created Snd, the commercial division of M6 network, and worked at...

U.S. showrunner Frank Spotnitz (“The Man in the High Castle”) and British writer Steve Thompson (“Sherlock”) have been recruited by Italy’s Rai and Lux Vide to develop “Leonardo,” an English-language TV series that will portray the Renaissance genius as a gay outsider.
“He was a real outsider for those times. He was an illegitimate child, gay, vegetarian and left-handed,” said Rai Head of Drama Eleonora Andreatta, echoing a description found in “Leonardo da Vinci,” a new biography of the Italian polymath by U.S. author Walter Isaacson.
The new eight-part show, which Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions is co-producing with Lux Vide, is expected to be the first project to hit the airwaves from The Alliance, the co-production group formed by continental Europe’s top pubcasters: Rai, France Televisions, and Germany’s Zdf. A unique venue for a unique film written and directed by Cyril Morin and starring Sam Quartin, Chris Schellenger and Davy J. Marr, “NY84” follows the adventures of three young artists in the downtown New York art scene in the early 1980s. Young and carefree, Kate, Anton, and Keith party, photograph, paint, sing, and play their way through the clubs and lofts of Alphabet City.
The party ends in 1984 when Anton and Keith contract a mysterious illness known as the “gay cancer.” We gain an intimate glimpse into their creative and emotional lives as the three lose their youth and innocence.
Cyril Morin
This is a lyrical poetic paen to those times some of us were lucky enough to have lived through. The sexual revolution and its sexual freedom in effect then for the newly liberated homosexual community, also opened the way for Kate to express herself. And it opened a door for transexuals, women and the whole diversity of humanity to assert itself today.

19-2? Precinct 19, Car 2. It’s simple as that. A series title that upholds a long-standing tradition of cop shows throughout the years that use designators in their titles, from the likes of Car 54 Where Are You? to the more recent 10-8: Officers on Duty. 19-2 also continues the more modern tradition of the gritty cop drama, heavily influenced by the likes of cable TV dramas The Shield and The Wire – with the same hardened sensibilities, only this time with a Canadian twist…
Interestingly, 19-2 – as seen on this DVD – is not the original version of the show. This particular iteration of the cop drama is actually an Englich-language remake of the series, which was originally set in Montreal and filmed entirely in French.

La ligne brisée might look like a film that only relies on the name of its stars. Obviously, after going through the film, we can see that David Boutin and Guillaume Lemay-Thivierge, who are both big stars in Quebec, manage to carry with strength the film on their shoulders. However, expect to see some weak points in the storyline.
Sébastien Messier (David Boutin) and Danny Demers (Guillaume Lemay-Thivierge) are two friends who have been in boxing for a while. When Danny comes back to Montreal, Sébastien is preparing for a championship fight. However, their reunion goes awry and breaks their friendship. Five years later, Sébastien has hit the rock bottom and Danny is the world champion. In order to settle a score with Danny, Sébastien will challenge him. Will Danny accept it?
For a labourer who hails from the television industry, Louis Choquette certainly has a promising future ahead of him.
