Laila! has flourished more in the year leading up to her 19th birthday than some artists do in decades. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and producer first broke through on TikTok with spacey viral ditties “Like That” and “Not My Problem,” showing her intrinsic ear for R&b’s current wave and its off-center potential. She quickly followed that with her purely DIY debut album, Gap Year!, which helped nab Tyler, the Creator and Solange as fans.

Exclusive: After scoring a Best Actress Oscar nomination after winning the Golden Globe for Best Performance By An Actress in a Film Drama for her portrayal of a mother searching for her disappeared politician husband in I’m Still Here, Fernanda Torres tonight is making an apology for a decades-old skit on the Brazilian TV show Fantastico that is beginning to resurface. She played multiple characters in the skit, one of them in blackface.
“Almost twenty years ago, I appeared in blackface in a comedy sketch from a Brazilian TV show,” Torres said in a statement. “I am very sorry for this. I’m making this statement as it is important for me to address this swiftly to avoid further pain and confusion.
“At that time, despite the efforts of Black movements and organizations, the awareness of the racist history and symbolism of blackface hadn’t yet entered the mainstream public consciousness in Brazil.

I consider myself something like a student, autodidact or otherwise, of cinema and––even still, must confess––had not ever grasped the concept of Argentine noir. Credit to Criterion Channel, who’ll expand my horizons with February’s program (concisely titled “Argentine Noir”) that includes one known title––Pierre Chenal’s Native Son, an Argentine film from a French director adapting an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago––and five I look forward to discovering. Retrospective-wise, their wide-reaching Claudette Colbert program could double as a lesson in Old Hollywood, between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk, and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month and Valentine’s Day: the former engenders a series featuring films such as Nothing but a Man, Portrait of Jason, and Losing Ground; the latter brings “New York Love Stories,” from Carol to Crossing Delancey to, curiously, Annie Hall, which likely would not have...

Words don’t feel like enough when trying to capture the profundity of the heartrending documentary Daughters — but music does. The film’s enchanting score, composed by vocalist and musician Kelsey Lu, brings the same level of thoughtfulness as the musician does to their own projects and collaborations with artists like Solange and Blood Orange. Lu first tried their hand at scoring with 2023’s Earth Mama, a compelling feature about a young single mother navigating the foster care systemdirected by Savanah Leaf. The artist’s deep classical training has given them the intellect and ear to expand sound through textured instrumentation in a way that accentuates filmic subjects. “It came really naturally for me because I make music that feels very cinematic,” Lu says. “It has a lot of layers.”

A24's worst-reviewed horror film of 2024 finds streaming success after disappointing at the box office. The independent studio's first horror film was director Robert Eggers' debut in 2015, The Witch, which received rave reviews from critics and became a sleeper hit at the box office. In turn, The Witch helped establish the distinct tone for A24 horror movies, which widely prioritize atmospheric tension over cheap jump scares, as seen in Talk to Me, Ti West's X trilogy, Ari Aster's Hereditary and Midsommar, and more.
With the calendar having turned, 2024 was another strong year for A24. The overwhelming majority of their movies from the past year earned critical acclaim and, in turn, strong Rotten Tomatoes scores, including their Oscar contenders, Sing Sing and The Brutalist (92%). This extends to A24 horror as well, with I Saw the TV Glow (84%), MaXXXine (72%), and Heretic (91%) all finding success. However, two of A24's biggest...

One of the main upsides of streaming is its ability to give unpopular, forgotten, or maligned movies a new lease of life. A good example is the action-packed "Clash of the Titans" remake becoming a hit on Max 14 years after it was released to negative critical reviews. Last year, horror crossover "Freddy vs. Jason" also rose from the dead on Max, two decades after the movie first slashed its way into theaters. And now one of 2024's worst horror movies, "The Front Room," is storming up Max's charts.
According to data obtained by FlixPatrol, A24's "The Front Room" is currently the second most-watched movie on the streaming service, right behind Clint Eastwood's "Juror #2." Directed by the Eggers Brothers, the horror-comedy tells the story of a married woman who must protect her newborn child from her wicked mother-in-law -- a religious zealot who insists on imposing her values on everyone.

After failing to meet box office expectations, Max and Sam Eggers' directorial debut, The Front Room, has become a streaming success. When the psychological horror thriller landed in theaters in September, it was projected to gross $5 million but fell a bit flat, bringing in barely its supposed budget, $3.2 million; it also became A24's lowest-rated movie of 2024 on Rotten Tomatoes. The critically divisive film (which currently holds a 42% rating on the review site) now sits at the number two spot in Max's most streamed movies, topped only by Clint Eastwood's Juror #2.
Based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill, The Front Room stars Brandy Norwood as Belinda, a pregnant woman whose life is thrown into disarray when her aging mother-in-law, Solange (Kathryn Hunter), moves in with Belinda and her husband. Solange's arrival creates tension; her eccentric behavior and weird demands push Belinda beyond her limits.

One of the most infamous public moments of Jay-Z and Beyoncé happened in 2014 when the Say My Name singer’s sister attacked the hip-hop mogul in an elevator. Solange Knowles ferociously assaulted Jay-Z, screaming and kicking at him after a Met Gala after-party. Beyoncé witnessed the whole incident without getting physically involved in the fight.

This week’s top pick, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, is likely to earn a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Oscars. But it likely won’t join its predecessor, 2005’s Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, in actually winning the award.
Pioneering “claymation” studio Aardman’s second Wallace & Gromit feature finds the innocent inventor and his more skeptical dog re-encountering the dastardly penguin thief Feathers McGraw, whose jewel heist they thwarted back in the 1993 short The Wrong Trousers. Imprisoned in a zoo ever since Wallace and Gromit stopped him, McGraw has come back for revenge. It’s a sequel 30 years in the making, and the whole family will love it. It’s now streaming on Netflix.

Wasserman is expected to bolster its music unit with the hiring of two of WME’s co-heads of its hip-hop division, who are said to be on the move over to the Westwood-based talent management and production company, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

A24 has become largely known for their work in the indie horror sphere, with everything from the psychological chiller Hereditary to the more directly supernatural Talk to Me. The studio has also made a reputation for frequently collaborating with certain filmmakers, including Robert Eggers on his first two projects, The Witch and The Lighthouse. Now, the studio has sought to expand that to Eggers' filmmaking siblings, Max and Sam Eggers, with the absurdist psychological horror The Front Room, which unfortunately doesn't make the same impact.
The Front Room is a psychological horror film directed by the Eggers Brothers. Set in a single location, it revolves around a young, pregnant woman caring for her ailing grandmother, whose secrets and dementia create a tense and eerie atmosphere. The film stars Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter, and explores themes of family, memory, and the supernatural.

The grotesque, the abominable, and an ostentatious display of Christian symbols and art make up the grammar of cringe horror in this recent A24 presentation, “The Front Room” (2024). The film also puts the narrative of hagsploitation at the forefront. The horror lies more in the very real shared experience of generational racism than in the psychological and supernatural.
Max Eggers and Sam Eggers present the film as a variation of camp horror where the secularization of the new world has brought back from the dead– or the verge of dead– an evil old KKK grandmother and put her in a shared household with her prey: an African American non-Christian daughter-in-law. The rest is up to us to decode.

The arrival of Manuel in a small town in Oaxaca sets the stage for a moving exploration of friendship against a backdrop of societal expectations in The Secret of the River. Manuel’s initial interactions with Erik, a stereotypical boy whose sportsmanship contrasts with Manuel’s more sensitive personality, highlight the complexities of male friendships formed by cultural norms. In a conservative community where traditional manhood is strictly enforced, especially by Erik’s father, Jacinto, their bond develops amid the vibrant yet oppressive atmosphere.
A tragic confrontation by the river serves as the spark that ignites their relationship, weaving their stories together through shared trauma. The accidental death of a guy who was trying to attack Manuel becomes a heavy secret that ties the boys together but also threatens to tear their lives apart. This scene perfectly captures the show’s deft handling of darker themes, reflecting the harsh realities marginalized people face.

Like many other horror movies, The Front Room is based on another piece of work. It's based on Susan Hill's short story of the same name. Creative brother duo, Max and Sam Eggers, wrote the script for the film as well as directed it.
A24 released The Front Room in theaters back in September, and sadly, the overall critic and audience response wasn't too great. What's even worse is that it didn't do well at the box office. The horror flick generated very low box office numbers,...

After a fall-off in popularity (and quality) throughout much of the 1990s, teen-skewing comedies were suddenly all the rage in Hollywood again at the turn of the millennium. The "Pygmalion"-inspired "She's All That" kicked off the craze, which included such highs as "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Dick," and more lows than I care to remember. These films were quite clearly the offspring of John Hughes' 1980s classics, but they could rarely come close to the mix of insouciance and sentimentality that made his films snap. They also weren't very funny, which didn't help.

Kanye West is no stranger to controversy. Over the years, the rapper has been in and out of tabloids for his erratic behavior and insane comments. He has recently been stealing headlines with his wife, Bianca Censori. But the spotlight was shifted back to an old 2022 interview that was recently released by Cancade Owens.

Judging by the feature debut of Max and Sam Eggers, The Front Room, it seems that their elder and more famous brother Robert, of The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman fame, inherited most of the family's talent for filmmaking. It makes one wonder if the production house that, over the course of last decade, has become synonymous with so-called “elevated genre” movies would have stood behind such a poorly drawn-out and profoundly misguided project if Max and Sam carried a different last name?
The idea behind The Front Room is simple enough: a financially struggling couple that expects a baby takes an offer from husband’s widowed stepmother to support her for the rest of her life in return for her paying off their mortgage debt and bequeathing everything to them. Soon enough, it turns out that the God-fearing, old-fashioned Southern lady Solange (Kathryn Hunter) is a stepmother(-in-law) from.

Kathryn Hunter elevates everything she’s in, which goes double for a film as limp and directionless as The Front Room, the directorial debut of Max and Sam Eggers. A horror-thriller that might also be attempting comedy — it can be hard to tell — The Front Room begins with Belinda (Brandy) being forced to quit a job that undervalues her. She also has to contend with the mood swings of her husband Norman (Andrew Burnap). Then Norman’s eccentric stepmother re-enters their lives: Solange (Hunter), a self-professed psychic. She is meek and hunched over, uses two canes, and frequently soils herself — though she doesn’t let this stop her from overstepping Belinda’s personal boundaries.
What ought to be unnerving is mostly off-putting. The movie’s presentation is distant, and its animated, sitcom performances from Brandy and Burnap — which render Belinda and Norman broad and uninteresting — don’t match its attempted thrills.

Ah, celebrity relationships, where privacy can feel like a distant dream. In this arena, Kanye West, now known as Ye, frequently stirs the pot and raises eyebrows. For instance, in an earlier episode of Candace Owens’ podcast, recorded in 2022, West’s remarks certainly stirred the waters. His bold suggestion that Beyoncé should let Jay-Z cheat has led many to wonder just how far is too far, even for him.

The annual Prix Jean Vigo, typically awarded to a rising French director, recently recognized talents like Sophie Letourneur for Énorme, Axelle Ropert for Petite Solange, and Alice Diop for Saint-Omer. This year, the honor goes to another female filmmaker this time — Louise Courvoisier for her debut film Vingt Dieux (aka Holy Cow), a 2024 Cannes Film Festival selection in the Un Certain Regard section, where it also won the Un Certain Regard Youth Prize. Zeitgeist Films landed the distribution rights and have plans to distribute the film in March of next year. In our review, I mentioned “with a blend of playfulness and sincerity, the film captures the complexities of human desperation, inviting audiences to both admire and despise the multiple missteps – you’ll love to hate him, but miss him if he weren’t there type.”…...

Kate Winslet has had a long career, taking on diverse roles that have often been memorable. Shes always been outstanding, and thats no different in Lee, in which she plays the titular Lee Miller, a model-turned-war photographer. Director Ellen Kuras film, which Liz Hannah, John Collee, and Marion Hume penned, doesnt live up to Winslets performance. I felt detached from Lees life for much of the film. Characters come and go including Marion Cotillard in a small, barely there role as Lees friend Solange but they arent developed enough and are often paper-thin cutouts of real people.

Not even a month since A24s The Front Room premiered, the film is already heading for digital release. The horror film is now available to rent or purchase on digital platforms at $19.99 and $24.99 respectively. On paper, The Front Room had a lot of impressive talent going for it. Brandy returns to the horror circle in a film that makes a solid attempt at social commentary. The singer-actor became a cult icon for her role in the early-aughts horror sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. In The Front Room, she stars as Belinda, newly pregnant with her first child with her husband, Norman (Andrew Burnap), when they unexpectedly have to invite his estranged stepmother, Solange (Kathryn Hunter) to live with them.

Directed by Sam and Max Eggers, The Front Room is supposed to be a horror thriller, but unfortunately, the humor works better than the scare. What could have been a creepy watch turned out to be dull. Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter tried to make sense of the mess, but performances alone can only do so much. Belinda, a professor in anthropology, decided to quit her job after the severe disrespect she was subjected to, primarily because of her race. She was pregnant and wanted to focus her attention on their unborn child. Belinda and Norman had lost their first child, and getting over the trauma was quite a challenge. They were hopeful about their future together, but Belinda often found herself sleepwalking, and her dreams usually turned into nightmares. Their peaceful existence was interrupted when Norman was informed that his estranged father had passed away. Belinda and Norman attended the funeral,...

Did you miss A24's latest horror film The Front Room when it hit theaters on Sept. 6? No worries! The movie has just landed on digital platforms, so now you can rent or purchase it to watch at home. We'll get more into the cost a little later. But first, let's discuss what the movie is about, who's behind it, and who's in the cast.
The Front Room is a psychological horror film written and helmed by Max and Sam Eggers in their feature film debut. Max had previously worked on the horror film The Lighthouse, co-writing the script with his brother Robert Eggers. Sam, on the other hand, is known for co-writing the script for the documentary Olympia with Harry Mavromichalis.
Like many other movies nowadays, The Front Room is based on another piece of work. In fact, it's based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill.

After a summer of shows, “America’s Got Talent” has reached the last stage in the competition: the live final. Competing for America’s votes on September 17 are 10 finalists: dance troupes Airfootworks and Brent Street, acrobatic group Hakuna Matata Acrobats, singer Richard Goodall, comedian Learnmore Jonasi, quick change artist Solange Kardinaly, dog act Roni Sagi & Rhythm, aerial duo Sebastián & Sonia, singer Dee Dee Simon, and drone group Sky Elements.
Four of these “AGT” finalists earned a Golden Buzzer from one of the judges during the Quarterfinals stage of the competition: Airfootworks (chosen by Howie Mandel), Hakuna Matata Acrobats (chosen by Sofia Vergara), Sebastián & Sonia (chosen by Simon Cowell) and Dee Dee Simon (chosen by Heidi Klum). The other six contenders for the title made the cut during last week’s Semifinal.
