Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Costner is universally known for his role in Western films. The filmmaker wanted to restore the genre's popularity with the Horizon: An American Saga film series and continues to believe in the project despite the first installment's poor critical and commercial reception.
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 premiered on June 28, 2024, 36 years after Costner started developing the series in 1988. A longtime passion project for the actor and director, who used his own money to produce it, the franchise is supposed to include four epic Western films. At the premiere of Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2, Costner told Decider he's still confident the series would be a success, citing the first installment's journey on streaming.

Kevin Costner's 'Horizon - Chapter 2' Lands Divisive Rotten Tomatoes Score Score After First Reviews
Kevin Costner might be on the cusp of making the most divisive western franchise of all-time, as the first reviews for the repeatedly delayed Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 have just been released. The first Horizon movie was released in theaters last June, and divided critics; holding a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But, the majority of audiences enjoyed Costner's lengthy take on the western genre, as the film holds a much stronger 70% audience score. But, poor box office figures left the future of Costner's 4-part Horizon franchise in turmoil. Although, with the latest reviews, Chapter 2's release could now be a very real possibility.
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 held its U.S. premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival last Friday (Feb. 7), and the first reviews have just dropped. Somehow, Chapter 2 appears to be even more divisive than the first film, currently sitting at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Via Variety, Chapter 2 of Horizon officially premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival inside the Arlington Theater on Feb. 7. The movie debuted to a full house of guests, including legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, with star and director Kevin Costner explaining the inspiration for his series. “The people who traveled across the ocean to America were in search of a dream,” he said. “If you were mean enough and tough enough, you could make it yours. And that was a nightmare for the people who had been here for 15,000 years. And this land was contested. It was a bad ending for the Native Americans who existed here and had found some equilibrium. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival landed a major win for its 40th anniversary with the U.S. premiere of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 on February 7. It was a big moment for Kevin Costner, who first introduced his ambitious four-part Western in Venice last September.
After the screening, festival director Roger Durling led a conversation with Costner, costume designer Lisa Lovaas, and composer John Debney.
Costner shared what inspired him to bring this story to life, highlighting the myths and harsh realities of westward expansion. ‘People believed if they could just cross that ocean, they’d find paradise. But if you were tough enough, you could just take it,’ he said.
He didn’t shy away from the darker side of that history, adding, ‘That dream was a nightmare for the Native Americans who had been here for 15,000 years. This land was fought over from one coast to the other,...

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival celebrated a huge get for its 40th anniversary: the U.S. premiere of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” on Friday, February 7. The screening is five months to the day after it premiered in Venice last September, marking the second installment of Costner’s planned four-part Western epic. Following the screening, festival Director Roger Durling held a Q&a with Costner, costume designer Lisa Lovaas, and composer John Debney.
Costner immediately started talking about what initially drew him to wanting to bring this story to the silver screen, before putting an emphasis on finally giving women their deserved spotlight in the genre. “We were told if we could get across that Atlantic Ocean, there was a place. It was like the Garden of Eden, and if you were mean enough and tough enough, you could make it yours,” Costner said.

Kevin Costner's John Dutton was the titular family patriarch in five seasons of Yellowstone. His presence played a crucial part in the success of the neo-Western drama, which was why the actor's departure prior to Yellowstone's Season 5B came as a great shock to the audience. But before the official announcement, there had already been rumors about discord and behind-the-scenes feuds between the star and the production. After much speculation about how Yellowstone would handle Costner's departure, Season 5B put the debate to rest by opening with a shocking revelation about John Dutton's fate.
Most of Season 5B revolved around the mystery of Jt's death. While the season finale wrapped up the show in a satisfying way, the uncertainty about its future became everyone's focus, and with it came the possibility of Costner's return. The star has been vocal about his love for the show and his character and his willingness to return.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 may be released in 2025. Isabelle Fuhrman, who stars in the epic Western franchise as Diamond Kittredge, recently offered her best guess as to when the second installment may hit theaters.

When Kevin Costner produced, directed, and starred in his first epic Western, “Dances with Wolves,” back in 1990, he went home on Academy Awards night with an armful of Oscars — including a Best Director statue in a year when his competition included Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. This year, Costner released the first chapter in his projected four-part passion project “Horizon: An American Saga,” and by virtually every standard, it’s an even more impressive work than “Dances with Wolves”: more complex in its themes and sense of moral inquiry, more expressive in its visual style and soundscape, and abundant with exquisitely crafted set pieces.
Unlike “Dances with Wolves,” however, “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” has struggled to find an audience, which puts it at a disadvantage in the awards race — after all, Academy and guild members have to actually see a movie to vote for it. A patient,...

Kevin Costner’s second installment of his Western franchise “Horizon: An American Saga” earned a three-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, before the director and star was crowded by fans.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, directed by and starring Costner alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Isabelle Fuhrman, Luke Wilson and more, will screen out of competition at the Venice Film Festival this afternoon. There’s an enormous amount to describe, but very little to actually say about Kevin Costner’s bedraggled “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2,” the second of a planned four installments in his sprawling, multistranded Western, that plays, after the muted reception of “Chapter 1” in Cannes, out of competition on the final day of Venice. Doubling down on the first chapter’s intermittent triumphs but also on its grievous structural issues, it is an exercise in contradictions: incident-packed yet oddly sedate; replete with characters new and returning, yet largely lacking in compelling characterization; and, running to over three hours, simply too long a film to be so jarringly abrupt.
It’s hardly a surprise that it picks up where the last left off, given the last left off with, essentially, a preview-reel of part two. Viewers bewildered by that montage’s final image — a lingering close-up of a mustachioed Giovanni Ribisi,...

Ill be honest, I dont entirely understand Kevin Costners Horizon project. Im not really one to judge whether it makes business sense to make a multi-part Western saga for theatrical release in 2024; as a critic, my stake isnt in the world of profits and losses. When Costner used all his pull to put a project like this on the big screen, I should be able to applaud him, purely out of my love for the cinematic experience. Instead, after seeing Horizon: Chapter 2, Im still scratching my head and wondering why this wasnt television.

Despite setbacks, acclaimed actor and director Kevin Costner remains determined to complete his epic “Horizon” western film series. Costner has faced challenges getting the four-part film saga made, but spoke passionately at the recent Venice Film Festival about why he believes in the project. The second installment, “Horizon: Chapter Two,” had its surprise premiere at the prestigious festival.
The first “Horizon” movie underperformed at the box office last year, earning only $11 million its opening weekend. This led the studio to cancel the planned theatrical release of “Chapter Two.” But Costner saw an opportunity when the Venice Film Festival artistic director offered to showcase it. “Alberto bringing this here gave me my dream and didn’t allow it to be squashed,” said a grateful Costner.
While acknowledging the financial reality behind the studio’s decision, Costner believes “Horizon” deserves more time. He pointed out that some of his past movies weren...

Kevin Costner spoke on the scrapped theatrical release of his second “Horizon” film on Saturday during its Venice Film Festival press conference, saying that “it probably was a reaction” to the underperformance of the first movie at the box office.
“It didn’t have overwhelming success,” Costner said of the first film. “I’ve had a lot of movies that way, that have stood the test of time.”
He added that it was a “studio decision” to release “Chapter Two” six weeks after “Chapter One,” and “it became a studio decision to not.” However, Costner asserted that it all worked out for the best because he got to screen “Horizon 2” at Venice.
“For me, it fell back into my plan, which was I always wanted to come out with movies about five-six months apart. And that was going to allow me to come to Venice,” he said. “I would have never come to Venice,...

Despite box office struggles, Kevin Costner remains optimistic about completing the Horizon: An American Saga franchise. Chapter 1 failed to earn back its budget, leading to Chapter 2 losing its theatrical release. Costner is determined to finish the series, already beginning production on Chapter 3 and planning to complete filming for the saga in 2025.
Kevin Costner still has hope for the future of the Horizon: An American Saga franchise, amid serious box office struggles. The first of a four-part movie series, Chapter 1 was released on June 28. It failed to earn back its budget at the box office, having earned just $34.3 million on a $50 million budget. To make matters worse, Cosnter expected Chapter 2 to be released on August 16, but Chapter 1's financial challenges led to the distributor declining to send it to theaters. While it appears that Chapter 2 will never have a theatrical release, the other movies in the franchise are also in danger.

Costner's Western franchise struggled at the box office with poor reviews, but hopes are high for its success via streaming. Following a disappointing theatrical release, Chapter 1's streaming debut could secure financing for future franchise installments. Chapter 1 weaves various storylines set in the mid-1800s, potentially setting the stage for further movies in Costner's Western franchise.

Horizon: An American Saga hits another snag that could cause it to be put out to pasture long before it hits its stride. Chapter 3 of Kevin Costner's Western drama film series halts production as Chapter 2's future remains murky.
According to a report from Puck, production for Chapter 3 of Horizon has stalled due to a lack of financing, with monetary issues putting the future of the titular four-part film in serious jeopardy. Chapter 3 principal photography began in May in Utah before Chapter 1's theatrical release and after delays caused by last year's Hollywood strikes. Chapter 3's production stoppage also comes as Chapter 4 is in early development.

Kevin Costner’s new film “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” has faced challenges since its theater release in June. The western epic, directed by and starring Costner, has earned just $34.2 million worldwide on a reported budget of $100 million. In response, the film’s studios have changed their release strategy.
“Horizon” tells the story of American families during the Civil War period from 1861 to 1865. Costner aimed to explore different perspectives on the west’s expansion and the conflict’s impact on national identity. Despite its ambitious vision and cast including Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington, the film failed to find large audiences in theaters.
As a result, New Line Cinema and Territory Pictures postponed the August theatrical debut of planned sequel “Chapter 2.” They will instead focus on releasing “Chapter 1” through video-on-demand services and streaming. A Territory Pictures statement expressed gratitude for fan interest but said more exposure is needed.

Delaying the release of Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 might save Kevin Costner's plans for the franchise. Home viewing may suit Horizon better than theaters, giving audiences a chance to digest the first part. A release date for Chapter 2 has yet to be decided.
It may seem like a setback, but Kevin Costner delaying the release of Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 might save his franchise plans. Costner may not have as many Westerns to his name as Clint Eastwood or John Wayne, but he's still very closely tied to the genre. Kevin Costner Westerns like Dances with Wolves or Open Range are some of the best to come out of the genre following its Golden Age, and even Yellowstone is a Western of sorts.
With the Horizon saga, Costner is setting out on his most ambitious and risky project to date. The star/director plans to make four movies,...

Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga won’t be released in August after all.
Nobody can accuse Kevin Costner of being lazy. He has financed, produced, co-written, directed and co–starred in Horizon: An American Saga, which was conceived as a four film series, each one pushing the three hour mark.
Chapter 1 was released in the UK last month, and the plan was to release Chapter 2 in August.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been pulled from the release schedule. The reason given is the lacklustre box office reciepts for the first film, which took $20 million against a budget of $100 million.
It seems the plan is to encourage people to discover Horizon at home, so anticipation can build for the second film.
