Kevin Costner’s new film “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” has faced challenges since its theater release in June. The western epic, directed by and starring Costner, has earned just $34.2 million worldwide on a reported budget of $100 million. In response, the film’s studios have changed their release strategy.

“Horizon” tells the story of American families during the Civil War period from 1861 to 1865. Costner aimed to explore different perspectives on the west’s expansion and the conflict’s impact on national identity. Despite its ambitious vision and cast including Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington, the film failed to find large audiences in theaters.

As a result, New Line Cinema and Territory Pictures postponed the August theatrical debut of planned sequel “Chapter 2.” They will instead focus on releasing “Chapter 1” through video-on-demand services and streaming. A Territory Pictures statement expressed gratitude for fan interest but said more exposure is needed.

Horizon: An American Saga lead actor and director Kevin Costner seems unbothered by the negative reviews Chapter 1 of the four-part Western drama film keeps garnering. The Oscar-winning filmmaker claims Horizon has staying power, regardless of what "dismissive" critics say about it.

Speaking with E! News, Costner insists he's "proud" of Chapter 1 despite its ill-fated theatrical run and thinks audiences will watch Horizon for generations to come given its quality. "I've faced life with people being dismissive of me," Costner said. "But they can't be dismissive of Horizon, because now it's out of their hands. And they might point to the finish line well, this is what it did at the box office but I know that this movie is going to play for the next 50 years."

The world premiere for Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter Two” is back on the horizon. It’s just a little further out there than it initially had been.

The second “Horizon” film will make its world premiere out of competition at the tail-end of the 81st Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia. It will screen on the final day of the festival, Saturday, September 7, 2024.

Chatper Two had been set for a cinema release in the US on August 16; New Line Cinema then pulled that release earlier this month, stating it wanted to give audiences ”a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVoD and Max.

Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga won’t be released in August after all.

Nobody can accuse Kevin Costner of being lazy. He has financed, produced, co-written, directed and co–starred in Horizon: An American Saga, which was conceived as a four film series, each one pushing the three hour mark.

Chapter 1 was released in the UK last month, and the plan was to release Chapter 2 in August.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been pulled from the release schedule. The reason given is the lacklustre box office reciepts for the first film, which took $20 million against a budget of $100 million.

It seems the plan is to encourage people to discover Horizon at home, so anticipation can build for the second film.
